Search for gggrandparents

Surnames: Carter
I know that my gggrandparents are:

Nathaniel Howell Carter born: 2/11/1855, died: 5/18/1939
who married Sarah E. Woodall.

They are both buried in Damascus Baptist Church cemetery in Long Creek.

I want to find out more about my gggrandmother. I have been told she was full indian.

If anyone knows anything, please let me know.

Thanks!

Dear Angie,

I think we have emailed before about our family connections. I just noticed your query about the Woodall family today.

I wish I could verify the Indian relationship. I had hoped to find out for sure about Nancy Long my Great Great Grandmother as well. They all lived in the same area around Long Creek and I have heard many stories about the Indians living in that area. My Great Aunt recalls Indians visiting her Cobb home (Nancy was married to Robert Cobb).

I did not get a chance to talk at great length with my Great Aunt Viola Woodall Cobb before her recent death. Her father was Jess Vowels Woodall brother to your Sara Easter Woodall.

I just responded to a query from Steve regarding his connection to Jonas Woodall brother to Sara and Jess. I do not know if he can help you with the Indian relationship or not.

I was looking at the Woodall information because I found an obituary for Pearlene Woodall Seawright and she is listed as the daughter of Purl and Lula Swafford Woodall. I wanted to check to see if "Purl" was the brother to Jess and son of John Jackson Woodall and Sally Jones.

I hope you keep in touch. I would love to share information with you regarding our family connections. Gail-Bel Air, MD

Gail,

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to locate Indian John Brady who was my gggggggrandfather. He was the father of Rachael Brady who was mother of Sara Easter Woodall that you refer to.

Can you help?

Dear Angie,

I will have to check my sources on this one because I have always had Sally Jones recorded as the mother of Sarah Easter/Ester Woodall. I have not heard of the BRADY name before that I can recall.

This is the information as I have recorded it in my records.

John Jackson Woodall b. May 1838 d. Oct. 18, 1916
he was born in Georgia
Sally Jones b. March 1835 in N.C. d. Sept. 3, 1910
They both are buried at Long Creek Baptist Church Cem., Long
Creek, Oconee Co., SC

John and Sally had the following children:
1. Sarah Easter/Ester b. May 16, 1859 d. June 20, 1933
she is buried at Damascus Baptist Church Cem.
married Nathaniel Howell Carter
2. Rachel Jane Woodall b. Sept. 14, 1866 d. Nov. 30, 1928
she is buried at Mtn. Grove Baptist Church Cem.
married George Washington Cobb (my great greatuncle)
his parents were Robert and Nancy Long Cobb
3. Perley Woodall b. 1868 - this is a male
4. Elias Wesley Woodall b. 1870
5. Jess Vowels b. Dec. 23, 1871 d. April 13, 1911
he is buried at Long Creek Baptist Church Cem.
married Florence Toccoa Phillips
6. Jonas b. 1878 d. 1942
buried Double Springs Baptist Church, Travelers Rest
married Etta Ann "Sissy" Wilbanks

I know there must be a lot of decendents around that may be able to help you. The only ones that I have any contact with are George and Rachel Woodall Cobb's and Jess and Florence Phillips Woodall's families.

I can contact them to see if they have done any research or if they have any knowledge.

Again, I will check my sources and see where I went wrong with the Jones surname.

Please continue to keep in touch. Gail

My information is list Sarah Jones's parents as Rachel Brady born about 1816 and Elias Jones born December 07, 1808, both born in Rutherford County. Both died in Long Creek, SC, Elias in December 07, 1880 and Rachel in January 09, 1904. Their daughter was Sarah "Sally" Jones born about 1835 Rutherford County,NC, who married John J. Woodall who was born abt. 1838 in Georgia. Both died in Oconee County, South Carolina John J. in October 20, 1916 and Sarah Woodall in September 03, 1910.

John served as a Private under:The Clifton Grays (name suggested by Richard Morgan)

A company under this name was organized at Pigeon Run in 1860 with the following roll, as given by sergeant W. H. Morgan, a member of it:

James L. Watkins; John J. Woodall;
W. A. Wilkerson, captured at Milford, May, 1864;
Long Creek Bap Ch, Oconee County, SC

Rachel Brady's father was John "Indian" Brady born about 1790 and her mother was Sally Jones (no relationship with Elias Jones.)

John "Indian" Brady has been linked as a brother to my GGG-Grandfather Jesse Brady who married Easter Tanner. Both brothers were married in Rutherford County, Jesse to Easter in 1813 and John to Sarah in 1809. Please respond. Jane
