I think I've been to Maybinton. If I was actually there, there's not much left to see as I did look hard to find it, it's not inc. into another town, very rural now. It was named after the Maybin family, Benjamin Maybin (1775 - 1850). I understand it was a cotton growing area. Some of my family are from near there. Mr. Pettus Wales Chick (b. 1806 d. 1878) ran a store there & his father Burwell farmed land around there. Mr. Robert Glenn Moorman (b. 1814 d. abt 1878) had a plantation there but moved in to Newberry in 1866. He was state House rep & Senator for Newberry Co. before & after War between the States & raised horses. Pettus & brother Reuben were in business with Moorman in Newberry.

Margi,

Here is what I knows from my research on William Spillers who married Sarah Ragan/Reagan.

My Ragan/Reagan research showed that Sarah Ragan/Reagan was the daughter of Rezin Ragan/Ragan,Jr. and Rachael Connell who migrated from Frederick County, Virginia. And she was the granddaughter of Rezin Ragan/Ragan,Sr. and Anne Beaumont who migrated to Frederick County, Virginia from Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

However, the birth year for William Spillers is incorrect because of 1800 Federal Census of Newberry District, South Carolina. Based on 1800 Federal Census there, my Ragan/Reagan research showed that William Spillers was born about 1770/1775. And it also based on the age of his wife, Sarah Ragan/Reagan, and on the number of children in the family too.

William Spillers and Sarah Ragan/Reagan were married circa 1794 in Newberry District, South Carolina. (This county was where Sarah Ragan/Reagan, daughter of Rezin Ragan/Reagan,Jr. and Rachael Connell, lived until her marriage.) They had nine (9) children to their marriage.

I like to debunk the given name," Peter Julius", once for all in the family of William and Sarah Ragan/Reagan.

After all, I am a Julian/Julien descendant from Isaac Julian/Julien in North Carolina who descended from Rene Julian who came to America from British Isles.

This "Peter Julius" was not the original name. It was actually PETER JULIEN SPILLERS! He was named for a very prominent man named Peter Julien whom they admired in early days of Newberry District, South Carolina . And, also this Peter Julien migrated to Hamilton County, Ohio from Newberry District, South Carolina too.

The death year for William Spillers appears to be correct. It is because he was not listed in 1820 Federal Census of Newberry County, Ohio. Sarah Ragan/Reagan Spillers, widow of William Spillers, was listed as the head of household there.

You are welcome to contact me.

-Donald B. Recently a known descendant of James Burris Whittle and a known descendant of Ambrose Whittle had their DNA done with 37 markers. They are "very closely related" which, I believe connects the lines at James Burris Whittle. Our Whittles went from Virginia to South Carolina and spread out to several other states. Any Whittles from Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama or any other states we would like to hear from you. Also if anyone who has knowledge about DNA results I would like to hear from you. We have been trying to connect the different lines for years. Thank you and hope to hear from you,
Brenda

Hey Again Sara
Yes the jewelry store owner was my Mother's (Cat Connelly Hawkins) brother, Jim Connelly. He was sweet papa's grandson. Uncle Jim had been shot, most unfortunately, by a neighborhood kid when he was 12. He did live an amazing life, becoming a jeweler and flying that airplane. I can remember Uncle Jim in the wheelchair pulling himself into the airplane alone and flying free like a bird..!! I also have pictures I can send you. Thanks for your information. I have tried to get a complete picture of our family for a long time. I will also send pics when I can get them organized. Talk later Sara,

Ernie

Ok…here's what I found in the Buford lineage from Ancestry.com years ago… I'm on your grandfather's brothers' side, William Thomas Buford, also called "sweet papa" or Willie T. They all lived in that big house on Bush River, across from the Bush River School, which MM Buford gave the land for. I think you grew up there? not sure…..anyway, here you go.

1. Munson Monroe Buford (b. 1846 d. 1930) married Sara Bell Buford (b. 1850 d. 1910) of Newberry SC
2.son of James C Buford (b. 1816, d. 1874) and Caroline Hudepeth (b., 1820, d 1875) of Union SC
3. James, son of John Buford (b. 1788, d. 1845) and Ann Rogers
4. John son of James Beauford (b. 1738 d. 1849) and ?
5. James, son of James Warren Buford of Lancaster VA (b. 1712 d. 1797) and Mary Parsons (b. 1716, d. 1733)
6. James Warren son of Henry Buford of Middlesex VA (b. 1684 d. 1720) and ?

That takes you back before the Revolution, so hope that helps. Take care cousin somewhere down the line… :)
Ernie Hawkins

Hi Sara,
Great to hear from you…..always fun to communicate with our blood line. Anyway, I have lots of info, so let me dig through it and I'll get back with you in a few days. I have most all on paper, not online. Did you know our line is directly related to kings and queens in Europe? The Bufords are the bloodline of King John Plantagenet of England (the one who signed the Magna Carta) and King Jean 1st of France.

MM Buford's diaries (60 years worth) are in the Southern Culture part of UNC library in Chapel Hill NC. And yes I'm related to Sara Tedford. She gave me a marble top table that was MM Buford's years ago before she died. My grandmother was Susie Buford Connelly. I have pictures of Sara Bell Buford's and MM Buford's grave also in Fairview cemetery in Laurens County SC I'll send.
James Buford was Munson's dad, they were from Union County SC, which borders Laurens county (MM's burial site) and Newberry County, where MM was sherif for 12 years.

Again I'll get all the names and get right back with you. Talk soon

Ernie
Hi, I am the great granddaughter of Munson Monroe Buford. My father was Robert Hayne Buford, son of Robert Hayne Buford, SR. (son of M.M.Buford)of Newberry, SC. My married name is Sara (Buford) Haslup. I am looking for documentation of the family line going back to the Revolutionary war to become a member of the DAR. I think my line goes through James Buford, the brother of Col. Abraham Buford. I think they all go back to Simeon Buford of Kentucky and Virginia. Can you give me any ideas? Thank you, Sara Buford Haslup of Seneca SC. PS Are you related to Sara Cromer Tedford of Newberry, SC?

10 years is a long time to wait to try and locate info about the Chambers/Chalmers estate but I just now found this post. I have to try. I think there is a connection between the Wilson surname and the Chambers or Chalmers surname. Info is as follows:

I'm looking for information on a William Wilson born ca 1800 SC who lived somewhere in SC in the 1800-1841 time period. Wife was Sarah, born ca 1809 SC; could have been a 2nd wife. Children were Benjamin W E Wilson born ca 1829; Mary M born ca 1837; Abigail/Abby L born ca 1838; Martha A born ca 1839; and James, born ca 1841.

This family is in Walker Co GA by 1850; census shows 4 more children...Susan/Suzy ca 1843 GA; Jerrell/Jerry M ca 1845 GA; Minerva J ca 1847 GA; and Sarah E/Sarah Elizabeth ca 1849 Ga. They are in DeKalb Co AL by 1860 along with one more son, my great gfather Abrhahm/Abe ca 1852 GA. On the 1870 census, I think I find the father, William Wilson in Jackson Co AL, age 69 SC, living with daughter Minerva Jane Wilson Wenrick. Also in that home is a Josephine Chambers/Chalmers, age 10, born ca 1860 AL. Her surname is not easily determined. I have no idea who she is or why she was in the home and I've been unable to find any more information on her or determine who her parents were.

Can anyone connect or offer any help?

I would be very grateful if you could supply me with the information needed to access a copy of the newspaper report of August 1823 about the death of John George Houseal. I am a Houseal descendant of the Newberry County Houseals, and we know very little about him. Recently we have found documentary evidence that shows that he was a Patriot captain in the Revolutionary War in SC. He is in the 1790 census of Beaufort, SC, and seems to have also resided on another plantation in Orangeburg District, SC--he is in 1820 census there, and his wife Louisa is buried in St. George's churchyard.

Hello - I wonder if anyone has any suggestions on how I can find property records for my ancestor, Caleb Lewis (1780 - 1841?). Supposedly, he was a Quaker who owned quite a few slaves in Newberry County. His conscious got the better of him, and he moved to Ohio with his wife Susanna in July, 1806, freeing his slaves.

I'd like to see if he really did own a larger plantation with slaves.

John T. Stewart, b c 1771 in Newberry District, S.C. married Jane Spence in that place about 1791. The had 11 children; Patrick, Joseph, Elizabeth, William D., Mary, Samuel, James, Jane, John Jr., Rosetta and Elizabeth Jane, last born by 1810. By 1830, these children had married, with children of their own, and started a migration to Newton Co., GA. Although their places of residence were generally near Oxford, their activities and marriages of 2nd and 3rd generation spilled over into Walton and other adjacent counties.

We have considerable information on those families, excepting:
(1) the children of Patrick and Martha Stewart; Martha C. b c 1828, Sarah C. b c 1830, James, b c 1835, Isaac C. b c 1838 and Sarah C.
Newberry Sheriff Robert Gillam Sr

I have copied this on the Newberry Sheriffs for Robert Gillam Sr. due to the fact that it states Robert Gillam's wife as Mary Rebecca Wallace. Something for Gillam ancestors to take note of...

Sheriffs of Newberry County
Newberry County, South Carolina
contributed by Edith Greisser

When Sheriff Gordon served his office, Newberry District was a much larger area and took in parts of Laurens. A town of Newberry did not exist. Newberry was a stagecoach stop-over in the woods with a place to change horses and get some food and water. Deputy sheriffs served for the various areas of the District. Since the Constitution of 1778 did not prohibit dual office holding some of the sheriffs served simultaneously as Legislators and judges.

In 1785 (Statutes IV, 661) Ninety Six District became too large to administer and the area was divided into six counties.

Men who served in the office for Newberry County 1785 to 2005 were:

1787 Robert Gillam
Father-in-law to the sister of Sheriff James Caldwell; Grand father to the cousins of Sheriff William Thomas Caldwell; Grand Father-in-law to sheriff Philomen Berry Waters.

Robert Gillam Sr. was Sheriff of Newberry Co. 1788 - 1790 and died at his rebuilt home on Page's Creek Jan. 1796. Robert Gillam Sr. was married to Mary Rebecca Wallace. In Annals of Newberry by O'Neal Robert Gillam Sr. was described as tall, slim, erect, active, sprightly with goodness of heart but when aroused by injury to act he was violent, impetuous and brave.

An incident was recalled in the Annals which happened around 1780. Robert Gillam Sr. was sitting on a fence cleaning his nails with a knife when a Tory soldier on horseback happened by, making offensive remarks as he passed. Robert Gillam sprang up from the fence, snatched the soldier by his collar, pulled him off his horse and took him prisoner. Perhaps this is why in 1780 the Tory sought out his farm and destroyed it. Robert and his wife had the following children: Joshua Gillam, Robert Gillam Jr., Susanna Martin, Susan Finley, Martha Smith, Frances Gillam. He and his wife are probably buried at the family graveyard in Chappells known as the Gillam/Wallace graveyard although there are no headstones to verify.

I believe William Gilliam was a cousin to the Robert Gillam family of western Newberry County. The family legend is that the records of the Revolutionary Service always wrote Robert Gilliam's name without the 'i' and for the sake of continuity, the family left it that way. For that reason the cousins on east Newberry wrote their name Gilliam and on the west side Gillam. (I have seen a court document where John Gilliam had his name changed to Gillam since most people pronounced the i "Gill e um" so they dropped the i. But what stays true to form is that it does help identify our line of Gillams.

My Grandmother Myrtice Smith Skinner daughter of Jessie Solomon Smith and granddaughter of Jacob Kinard Smith spoke of this mystery several times. However, She never said a name of a family. She said that what she was told is that Jacob Kinard was found orphaned and taken to the Taylor's to raise. Now, this may have been all handed down and changed information so it is difficult to tell. But I remember her being facinated about this mystery also.

April Skinner Smith

You've done a remarkable job of sorting out the various Chesley's. I'm descended from the Rev. Chesley Davis, Jr. son of Chesley and Mary Tate Davis. I have not been able to identify his parents correctly to my satisfaction. I've read the various genealogies that you have mentioned, and I cannot find any documentation to corroborate those lineages. Chesley and Mary Tate Davis moved from Bedford/Campbell, Virginia in the 1760's and located in Newberry, S.C. Mary's died in 1795 and her will is on file at Newberry. Apparently, Chesley left no will and due to the circumstances of his death during the revolution, I have found no court documents for his estate. I'm willing to share and would appreciate any information you may have.

Thanks!

Priscilla in Texas

Yes, gasp!!!, He was a Tory was imprisoned during the revolution and listed among those 'murdered' by the rebels. Needless to state, Henry Tate is father-in-law was not pleased with Chesley's behavior

My Mom Joneita has just past away on Wend. We are in the process of removing her antiques from her house. I have been told we may have our family bible from Matthew Lamar Bond. We have furniture and dishes that I know dating back 200 years. We will see what crops up. Let you know what we find.

Do you know if anyone from the Dudley Bond(Bonds) line has done DNA testing? I have done it with Family Tree DNA but it hasn't helped yet. There are a number of people whith the last name of Bond
who have been tested but only a couple with the Bonds name.
If anyone from your line (Bond) has been tested I would like to know so I can compare results.

My daughter and I joined DAR 4 years ago as descendants of John Abernathy through his daughter Elizabeth who married Joseph Hunter.
