Pickett family in Bucksville, Horry Co., SC

I am interested in finding someone who knows about the PICKETT family in Bucksville, Horry, SC. I see them on the 1870 US Census but not on the 1860 US Census, so it is possible they are the slaves of Mr. Buck who operated the saw mill. I'd like to find someone who knows about this area in regard to the slaves. The oldest Pickett I have found is Amos Pickett born ABOUT 1820 in SC.

In a history of Bucksville it says
"When Henry Buck came up the Waccamaw River, he saw the rice fields of the Neck and then he saw the forests of Horry District. Once Buck saw the cypress swamps of the lower Waccamaw, he knew he had found a lumberman’s paradise. There were already sawmills along the stretch of the river he most favored and he went to work for the PICKETT firm. Almost as soon as he set foot on Horry soil, he bought his first slave. Not long after that he bought an interest in the sawmill where he worked and then began to purchase land. It was not long before he was sole owner and engaged in a flourishing trade with his contacts in New England. Sailing ships began to come up the river to Bucksville to load the fine lumber this mill and two others he built produced.

There were Princes in Southampton County, Prince George County, and surrounding counties in VA in 1700s. They apparently traveled to Robeson County, NC and Georgetown, SC with the Ivey family around the mid-1700s. I have seen where one of the Princes (I believe it was Joseph) was on a Passengers List for a ship that diembarked around Georgetown, SC (maybe Murrell's Bay???) I am sorry that I don't have the particulars for this, but my computer crashed about 2 weeks ago and I have lost all of my research-ugh! Check out the Georgetown, SC boards and websites on the history/genealolgy of the area. They may help you find more. Also check out Bob's Genealogy Filing Cabinet on the web (look in the Adam Ivey Family section.)Also, the boards for the southeastern VA counties and the Library of Virginia have information on the Prince family. Hope this helps!
Tracie

To this point I have found three John L. Princes. The youngest having been born around 1868 per the 1870 Census, a grandson (it appears) of the John L. Prince born around 1818. Then there's the John L. Prince born in 1833. Who he is, I have no idea. Any information on any of the three John L. Princes or their respective families would be greatly appreciated.

Your John L Prince is the only Prince listed buried at the Dorman Cemetery according to the Horry County Historical Society's website http://www.hchsonline.org/cemetery/dorman.html
You may search some of their other cemeteries to locate other Prince names or contact the Historical Society directly

According to the Find A Grave website, there is a John L. Prince buried at Old Dorman Cemetery in Horry County, SC. He is the only Prince currently listed at that cemetery. The dates on the memorial are August 15, 1833 - April 12, 1855 (making him approximately 22 years old when he died). The photograph pictured shows the marker in multiple pieces. No parents, spouse, or children are linked to his memorial at this time.

Any information about Mr. Prince would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for who the parents of Martha Allen who married William Henry Hardee may have been. Many people on Ancestry.com have her listed as the daughter of Rebecca Alford and Isaac Allen but the censuses just do not match up to her.
I believe instead that she maybe the granddaughter of Robert Allen and Dotty Alford of Bayboro, possibly from their daughter Dorcas Allen.

1880 census
Name:	Martha Allen
Age:	7
Birth Year:	abt 1873 **
Birthplace:	South Carolina
Home in 1880:	Bayboro, Horry, South Carolina
Race:	White
Gender:	Female
Relation to Head of House:	Granddaughter
Marital Status:	Single
Father's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Mother's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Household Members:
Name	Age
Robert Allen	89
Dota Allen	60
Darchas Allen	25
Martha Allen	7

1900 census
Martha Hardee
Age:	25
Birth Date:	Jun 1874 **
Birthplace:	South Carolina
Home in 1900:	Bayboro, Horry, South Carolina
[Horry]
Race:	White
Gender:	Female
Relation to Head of House:	Wife
Marital Status:	Married
Spouse's Name:	William H Hardee
Marriage Year:	1899
Years Married:	1
Father's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Mother's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Mother: number of living children:	1
Mother: How many children:	1
Household Members:
Name	Age
William H Hardee	24
Martha Hardee	25
Colonel V Hardee	6/12

1910 census
Name:	Martha Hardee
Age in 1910:	39
Birth Year:	abt 1871
[1871]
Birthplace:	South Carolina
Home in 1910:	Bayboro, Horry, South Carolina
Race:	White
Gender:	Female
Relation to Head of House:	Wife
Marital Status:	Married
Spouse's Name:	William H Hardee
Father's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Mother's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Household Members:
Name	Age
William H Hardee	38
Martha Hardee	39
Earnest Hardee	9
Eva Hardee	6
Pink P Hardee	3
Nancy Hardee	0
[2/12]

1920 census
Name:	Martha Hardee
Age:	35
Birth Year:	abt 1885
Birthplace:	South Carolina
Home in 1920:	Bayboro, Horry, South Carolina
Race:	White
Gender:	Female
Relation to Head of House:	Wife
Marital Status:	Married
Spouse's Name:	Henry Hardee
Father's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Mother's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Able to Read:	No
Able to Write:	No
Household Members:
Name	Age
Henry Hardee	44
Martha Hardee	35
Ernest V Hardee	18
Eva A Hardee	15
Pink Hardee	10
Nancy Hardee	8

1930 census
Martha J Hardee
Gender:	Female
Birth Year:	abt 1874
Birthplace:	South Carolina
Race:	White
Home in 1930:	Conway, Horry, South Carolina
View Map
Marital Status:	Married
Relation to Head of House:	Wife
Spouse's Name: W Henry Hardee
Father's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Mother's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Household Members:
Name	Age
W Henry Hardee	59
Martha J Hardee	56
Eva Hardee	23
Nancy J Hardee	18
Grand Hardee	3
[3 8/12]

1940
Name:	Mrs Martha Hardee
Age:	75
Estimated Birth Year:	abt 1865
Gender:	Female
Race:	White
Birthplace:	South Carolina
Marital Status:	Married
Relation to Head of House:	Wife
Home in 1940:	Conway, Horry, South Carolina
View Map
Street:	Highway no 701
Inferred Residence in 1935:	Rural, Horry, South Carolina
Income Other Sources:	No
Neighbors:	View others on page
Household Members:
Name	Age
Henry Hardee	69
Martha Hardee	75
Willa Mae Hardee	8

While the 1930 census has her being born in the 1880's she would have been 13 years old if her first son was born in 1899. While I know that is probable, all of the other census consistantly have her at being born at around 1873.

This is comparing her to the Martha O Allen that was the daughter of Isaac Allen and Rebecca Alford.

1900 census
Name:	Martha O Allen
Age:	13
Birth Date:	Aug 1886
Birthplace:	South Carolina
Home in 1900:	Dog Bluff, Horry, South Carolina
Race:	White
Gender:	Female
Relation to Head of House:	Daughter
Marital Status:	Single
Father's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Mother's Name:	Rebecca Allen
Mother's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Occupation:	View on Image
Neighbors:	View others on page
Household Members:
Name	Age
Rebecca Allen	49
Jane M Allen	19
Auster G Allen	14
Martha O Allen	13
Elisabeth S Allen	10

1910 census
Name:	Martha Allen
Age in 1910:	24
Birth Year:	abt 1886
[1886]
Birthplace:	South Carolina
Home in 1910:	Dog Bluff, Horry, South Carolina
Race:	White
Gender:	Female
Relation to Head of House:	Daughter
Marital Status:	Single
Father's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Mother's Name:	Rebeckah J Allen
Mother's Birthplace:	South Carolina
Household Members:
Name	Age
Rebeckah J Allen	64
Martha Allen	24
Homer Allen	8
Emma Allen	6
Gussie Allen	4

I am pretty sure this proves these two are not the same Martha Allen. So far I have not been able to find any death record for Martha Allen Hardee. I assume she is buried in Bayboro Baptist Church Cemetery with her family. Does anyone have any more information that can help me with finding her parents?
Thank you and please email me at Jeweliewoodell@yahoo.com

Rehoboth UMC has suffered with an unexpected illness and death of a beloved member and I have been preoccupied with that for the last 2 wks. I have been unable to discuss the Martin Cemetery with other family members who may hold info. It will most likely be next week before I can.

tammy

I forgot to mention in my previous reply that Victor Sarvis is buried in this cemetery. I photographed his gravemarker on one of my last visits to the cemetery and have created a memorial for him, to include the photo and his obituary, on Find A Grave. If you are not familiar with Find A Grave, I would recommend that you check it out, as I have found it to be a very useful resource and an excellent way to organize research.

tarensa,

Thanks so much for your reply!

I was researching this for both myself and another Horry County researcher, to whom I have forwarded your reply. His interest was mostly in the Martins; mine is the Princes.

In 2010, I looked at the County's property records and noted owner names of Sarvis Aiken J (LE) and Sarvis Tammy R. Are you one of those persons?

I've heard the name Aiken Sarvis before, and I'm pretty sure that was from Mr. Tracy and Mrs. Rhoda Alford who once lived on Hwy 308. They are both now deceased.

I have no knowledge as to whom placed the plaque reading "In Memory of Daisy H. Rogers Martin Cemetery Established 1878." It's my understanding that Daisy Rogers is the daughter of Hattie Jane Matin Henderson.

From an extract from the Dillon Herald, Daisy Henderson Rogers was buried at the Martin Family Cemetery in Horry County. The News and Courier (Charleston, SC) states the same.

Priscilla Aquilla Martin Prince is buried there, next to her husband Cornelius J. Prince. He was my great-great-great grandfather on my mother's side. He was the Confederate veteran, I assume, you were referring to. With the help of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) Litchfield Camp 132, I organized a memorial service for him that took place on Saturday - August 14, 2010. On that date, the cemetery was overgrown. It was quite a surprise, as it was not in such a state during my previous visits in April and May of the same year. I've returned since, and found the cemetery in much better condition. On two occassions, my husband and I have cleaned the gravemarkers in this cemetery. I have no idea who maintains the cemetery, though I was told several years ago that it was once kept by a Meekins lady who might have been a daughter of Daisy Rogers.

My great-great grandfather on my mother's father's side, Arlington Hazard Prince, is the son of Cornelius J. Prince and is buried at Rehobeth.

I'm not sure what it is you are researching, but I would be happy to help if you would like for me to. Just let me know.

Thanks again,
Kathy Smith

Looking for info about Rogers Cemetery, specifically the identity of the sixteen persons whose graves are currently marked only by orange flags. I've been told there were wooden markers in the past, but these are no longer present.

Cemetery is located off of Sarvis Road in Galivants Ferry at the edge of a field. A chain link fence surrounds the .2 acres, and a wooden placard reads "In Memory of Daisy H. Rogers - Martin Cemetery - Established 1878."

Twenty three marked graves with the surnames Henderson, Martin, Prince, Rogers, and Sarvis are located on the property. My connection is the Princes.

Also interested in learning who might have been the owner in 1878.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

This cemetery is on my property that I have owned since 1972. This property and cemetery have been in my family for over a 100 yrs. I am the fifth consecutive generation to own and live on it.

The owner of the land in 1878 possibly would have been P. C Sarvis, whose Daughter in law, Mrs Aiken Sarvis lived on it until her death in the mid 2000's. P. C Sarvis was born in 1858 in Horry County, Galivants Ferry and is buried in Rehoboth Methodist Cemetery which is about 3 miles from Rogers/Martin Cemetery. P. C would have most likely have owned it in 1878 and is my great great grandfather.

I have lived on this property since 1993 and have been to the graveyard even before that. I have never seen wooden markers.

I am not sure how this graveyard became known as Rogers/Martin as there are no Rogers, Martins nor Princes born into the Sarvis family. The wooden plague that is on the fence is a recent addition (within the last 3-4 yrs) and was not sanctioned by me nor my family, the owners.

In 2008, a Confederate Soldier who was buried was recognized and Marked by the the Govt.

There may have been a church (now long gone) next to the graveyard and may explain how this graveyard came to be but I have been unable to find anyone who has been born and raised in this area who can give me any info on said church. Any persons who could confirm are likely dead.

There is a Daniel B. Sarvis, b 1860, who is buried there in Rogers/Martin Cemetery, who is most likely P. C Sarvis's brother.

This Rogers/Martin Cemetery sits in this tract of land that belonged to my great grandfather Hughey James Sarvis at one point. Hughey Sarvis owned a much larger tract that was over 200 acres. He divided his 200+ tract into 5 tracts of 45 and gave a 45 acre tract to each of his 5 children. The cemetery lies in the midst of tract 4, which I now own.

I have no knowledge of the unmarked graves. Wish I could pass on some helpful info.

I am doing some research for Rehoboth Methodist Cemetery. From what I can see in census records for 1800, 1820, 1840 and 1850 there were Sarvis's, Princes and Rogers in 1800 in this area. I can tell you that in the Rehoboth Cemetery we have a couple of sections in the graveyard that had many wooden markers but many have disappeared (most likely from lawnmowers). Many of the oldest records for Rehoboth have been lost and we have no idea how old nor who is buried in those graves now.

A couple of times a year I go to Rogers/Martin Cemetery and look around. I do not maintain it. I do not know if anyone does but it is not overgrown. Mrs Aiken Sarvis's son, Victor Sarvis may be buried there. He died 18 months ago and I think he may have chosen to be buried there cause it was a free plot.

There are Princes buried in Rehoboth Cemetery. Rehoboth is the oldest and largest cemetery in the immediate area.

If you need any other info I can try to help.

Jennifer, I have been researching the Murdock family in Horry/Georgetown Co. According to the will of James Woodward, Sr., his daughter, Tabitha Ann, married a Murdock. The only Murdock I find in the 1800 and 1810 census is James Murdock. He apparently died before the 1820 census and Tabitha Ann is listed as widowed. I suspect James was in the war of 1812 and possible died there. She died before the 1850 census. They had two sons, John and Joseph. I suspect their son, Joseph, is your Joseph Murdock. Let me know if you think this may be a match.

Dixie

What I know with certainty: Sarah Burch Bailey, dau. of Gen. William Bailey and his wife, Elizabeth Mary Bellamy, was b. Apr. 02, 1830. Sarah married my great-great-grandfather, Thompson Bird Lamar, (Col., Confederate Army; google him). They were the parents of Mary Elizabeth Lamar, my great-grandmother.
Search "15 Plantations" and you will find both the Bellamy and Bailey Plantations' histories.
If you're interested in plantation life and slavery, read: http://www.questia.com/library/29686/slavery-and-plantation-....

Looking for any information about William Albert Rabon, son of Matthew Oneal Rabon and Mary Elizabeth Barnhill of Horry County, South Carolina.

May have went by his middle name, Albert.
May have signed name W. A. Rabon.

Married Eliza Ward, daughter of Moody Ward, in Bayboro.

Also connected to Otway Owens.

Spent time in the state of Florida, possibly Okaloosa County. Could have remarried. May have been associated with Eliza Garrett.

Date of death unknown. Believed to be 1928, probably in Florida.

ok.there are many things on my tree that I have not tried to correct though I know they need to be. I have all of hagar's children listed twice. One of the names is Julen in the tree but should be Queen. I know this because she is my great grandmother. she is also listed as victoria. she's actually queen victoria foxworth. I gues I should clean it up so as not to confuse others. didn't realize others might want to copy the information. Sorry.

Hi Rebecca,

I actually think I found that information of Hagar being the daughter of Catherine Goff Huggins on your family tree. I may have also found this information somewhere else but can't recall at this time.

I'm very new to this so I haven't been able to keep my notes straight. My apologies. If I find more info about the Hagar-Catherine I will let you know.

Hello,

I have read your post concerining Catherine Goff and Hagar. Where did you find that? I am a decendant of Hagar. Hagar was my grandmother's grandmother. My grandmother told me stories about her. And I have pictures of her and some of her children. I was told that she was half Native American. ???? Hagar was Hagar Legette before marrying Isaac Foxworth. So there is some confusion in your statements. But I would like to see the information concerning Catherine and Hagar.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Cumbo
Descendant of Hagar Legette Foxworth.

Hello!

Great hearing from you. Not sure if Catherine's maiden name was Goff, but can't be sure. However, she was definitely mother of Henry and Asariah. She was also mother to Alva Goff and George Huggins.

No, we other researchers don't believe James was truly Azariah nor Henry M's father. Actually, I have another Henry M. relative you can reach out to. If you'll send me an email to: cynthiablair2@gmail.com (that's me), I'll introduce you to her and it'll be easier to communicate. The two of us have done a lot of research togeher. She is from SC. I currently live in NC, but was born in SC - where are you?

I'm looking for any information about Wilson families in the area before and around the Civil War. My great-great grandmother was born in Horry Co. in 1852. Her name was Annie E. Wilson, father Tom (or Thomas) Wilson and her mother was Annie Liza (or Anne Elizabeth). I don't know about siblings or Tom's family. The family may have moved to Georgia or Florida after the war. I have been told that that Annie was Irish.

One of the other descendents that posted was of the opinion that Kitsy had been married prior. I honestly have no idea. I personally kind of think she wasn't and that Goff was probably her own name, but that's pure speculation as well.

Thanks Susan for responding and for the very interesting letter tidbit!

I noticed you came to the conclusion that Catherine Goff was married to a Henry Goff and lived in North Carolina. I was interested in knowing how you came to that conclusion.

BTW, my brother is a direct Goff descendent. If you ever find a Williamson descendent maybe I'll talk him into a DNA test?!

Thanks a million,

Aida Goff

This is from the records of a relative that researches the Blantons and Williamson - part of a letter written in 1912 by one of James Williamson's grand-daughters to another of his granddaughters:

"Well cousin, you asked me how come Mr. Henry M. Goff is any relation to us? Well I don't know that he actually is, though he is said to be your father's (James Haynes Williamson) and my mother's (Celia Alice Williamson Blanton) half-brother. Ha! Ha! .... I have heard Mother say our Grandpa Williamson took him when he was a small child and raised him for as long as he (James Williamson) lived. There were 2 of the boys that were laid to Grandpa. The other one was named Azariah, and their mama's name was Goff. Mother taught us children to call them Uncle and I loved Uncle Henry as my uncle. He seems to think the world of me. ..... He always stood for the Williamson's side and they seem to think a lot of him. ...."

Azariah and Henry weren't his "legitimate" kids or the cousins wouldn't be telling each other so hush-hush about it. He was certainly never married to a Goff. So, what was his motive for raising them? It does seem like he thought they were his (back in the days before DNA testing).

I imagine if one could find a direct legitimate male Williamson descendent and a direct legitimate male Goff descendent and compared the y-dna for a family match we might could be a bit surer of the relationship.

In 1925, Henry M. Goff passes away and on his death certificate, his parents are recorded as Catherine Goff and Jim Williamson. You can also find him and Azariah listed not as Goff's but as Williamson's in the 1860 Census.

Azariah Goff (b. 1842-44?) is recorded as a Mulatto in the 1860 Census...although his name is recorded as A Gough. Then in 1880 he's recorded as White...but this time his name is spelled Isariah Goff. Seems that the Census Rep took liberties with the spellings. I've found Isariah Goff, A. Gough, Azuriah Goff, Azariah Williamson, Osariah Gauf.

In 1850, Catherine Goff/Foxworth has a baby girl named Hagar or Haggar in SC. This child is recorded as being a non-white in the 1870 Census. She passes away with the surname of Foxworth.

In 1852 Alva G. Goff is born and it seems that Alva has always been recorded as either Black or Mulatto, i.e. 1870, 1880, 1900 Census.

Catherine marries William Huggins around 1853 and gives birth to George B. Huggins.

Hope this helps you!

Aida Goff

Hello!

I'm also trying to find information regarding Goff family. My ancestor is William W Goff, son of Henry M Goff.

On Henry M Goff's death certificate, it lists his father as Jim Williamson and mother as Catherine Goff (b. 1819). Does anyone know if Catherine's maiden name was Goff?

In the 1860 and see that the James Williamson is 66 y.o. I'm wondering if this is their grandfather instead of their father. I found another Jim Williamson born in 1824...

By the way, it might interest you to know that in the 1850 Census, "Osariah" & Henry "Gauf" are living with 7 members of the Williamson family. Then in the 1860 Census Wm Huggins and C. Huggins live with an "A Gough" and GB Huggins.

I'll be thrilled with any tiny bit of information!!

Thank you,

Aida Goff
