Re: Richard R Wilson Family of near Luray

Hi,
I am Evelyn Hutto. My grandmother told me our Wilsons were from SC but I have no information on them.
My great grandfather was James R. Wilson born about 1871 in SC, died about 1896, and married Ruthie Hart in Feb 1894 in Savannah, Georgia. Their son Benjamin Franklin Wilson, Sr. was born in Lena, Hampton, SC in 1894.
I have recently found Richard R. Wilson in the 1880 Census in Hampton Cty. with a son James of the correct age. You refer to this same Richard in your posts but have no information on his son James.
I was wondering if you have found any information on James since you last posted? Could my James R. be the son of Richard R.? It would be great to know that I have found my Wilson ancestors.

Its just pieces to the puzzle but it may help. By the way i am kin to the Lightseys and Lane families of the colleton, Hampton, Beaufort and teh surrounding areas to. You will probbaly come across those. Let me know what you find out about Julia and Miles. i hear my family is kin to thye Mixsons in another way to but don't know how. Hi. As far as i have come to find is that she had kids with George Lightsey and with Lewis ward but none with Miles Mixson. I have come across things that point to Julia;s maiden name being Bennett, and her sister Ella Bennett being the wife of my great great grandad Andrew Joshua Lane. I have been trying to find more info about her to prove she is the mother of my great grandmother Emma Ward. My great grandmother died young after giving birth to my grandmother but i can;t find out much about her.Do you have much info about Julia? If you want we can add each other so we can see what info on them we each have.

I found Thomas and Sylvia on the 1900 Census in Coosawhatchie,Hampton County, SC...They lived in Coosawhatchie and Pocotaligo, SC. Well its very interesting. I was born in Connecticut, but my mother and father we raised in Hampton County SC on two separate plantations. I am guessing its a strong possibility we are related. Take a look at my tree and you will find some relative from that approximate time period.

The picture is of my grandmother Lula Alma (Ihley) Owens, my aunt Alma Owens, and my mother, Ivy Lee Owens (1907-2001). I don't think I have this picture, and would love to have a copy.

Lula's husband was William Aiken Owens. His mother was Mary Cornelia Cook. The Cook and Bowers families seem to have close connections.

African Americans in hampton county

Question: Where was Wheeling SC, in 1777 ???

Just a very quick geographical question.

After all these years of chasing my CAMPBELL line of LA, GA, Carolina's and early VA, I finally have "something" in the way of a paper trail, albeit very faint, and I am in the beginning stages of trying to center onto a clue dating back to July 23, 1777.

I have a distant cousin (not related to my CAMPBELL line), making a trip in August to the Carolina's, and she has graciously offered to include my Campbell brickwall into this her latest upcoming Summer's research trip.

I just now checked my driver's copy of Rand McNally, and according to the towns listing ...jumps from WESTVILLE to WHITEHALL. There are no towns starting with "WHE," at all.

This lack of listing of WHEELING, leads me to believe that the community of WHEELING is a town no longer, or has been incorporated into a neighboring town or city, which ....may now be just an area designation.

I am hoping that the name of Wheeling is still in use, but as an area designation, which then could mark the spot of the former community in a specific County.

There are several precedences for this. I've run into this situation before in TX, where the Handley Train Station closed, and the city of Ft. Worth kept the name of Handley...using for a housing development that replaced the old 1800's Train station.
Knowing this, does give me some hope that I will discover "something" of Wheeling SC.

I am thinking that this may now be a section of a much larger neighboring town or city, or may be considered merely in historical accounts much like "old 96" currently is.

For the year 1777, does anyone know the general locality and what County the community or town of, Wheeling SC, is or was in??

I want every date and place I can get. I do not post birth or
marriage dates later than 1930 to the general population but I do
supply them to cousins! My date of birth is 30 Nov 1934 but when
it got posted to the JARRELL ListServer or the general internet it
would appear as 30 Nov 19(private) which tells everyone that I have
a hard date and no further research needs to be done.

Having said that - I post my dob in it's natural form because I'm

STANLEY, Ola

GRAYS - Mrs. Ola Mae Jarrell Stanley, 85, widow of the late Hanford
J. Stanley, died Sunday morning in the Hampton Regional Medical
Center after an extended illness.

Mrs. Stanley was born in Hampton County, November 22, 1920, a
daughter of the late George W. and Emma Pope Jarrell.

She was a member of the 1st Christian Church in Hampton and was a
homemaker that enjoyed gardening and working with flowers at her
home.

Surviving is a daughter, Mildred S. Roberts of Hampton; six grand
children, 14 great-grandchildren, and four great-great
grandchildren, with the most recent birth, Autumn Elizabeth Sparks.

Mrs. Stanley was predeceased by a daughter, Christine Grubbs;
brothers, Wilbur and G. W. Jarrell; and sister, Minnie Lee Varnadoe

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Peeples
Rhoden Funeral Home, located at 300 Mulberry Street in Hampton,
conducted by Rev. Robert Johnson, with burial in the Beaver Dam
Cemetery near Grays.

Friends may call at the Chapel in Hampton from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday
and Tuesday until the hour of services.

EARLY BRANCH- Mrs. Margie Lamar Mock Jarrell, 75, of Cat Branch
Road, Early Branch, died Friday, September 24, 2010 at her
residence.

She was the widow of G.W. Jarrell, Sr.

Mrs. Jarrell was born January 18, 1935 in Jasper County and was a
daughter of the late Florence Gertrude Mock. She was a member of
Steep Bottom Baptist Church. She loved to fish; but will always be
remembered for the love she had for her children, grandchildren and
great grandchildren.

Branch and Ellen Crosby and her husband Maurice of Grays;
grandchildren, Waynette MacNeir, Kirk DeLoach, Faye Lowther,
Christopher Smith, Jennifer Nelson, Jessica Crosby, Amanda Crosby
and Paige Jarrell; great grandchildren, Kayla DeLoach, Clayton
DeLoach, Abbie DeLoach, Kaisee Gibson, Kreylee Lowther, Kameron
MacNeir, Cassie DeLoach and Kaiden MacNeir; and her loyal and
beloved companion, Penny.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin Mock; and sisters,
Lila Morrison, Blanche Crosby and Kate Mock.

Funeral services were held 11 am, Monday, September 27, 2010 at The
Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel.

Interment followed in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Grays.

The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes, Varnville-Hampton
Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Been a long time since you asked, but if you're still looking:
Crocketville, Hickory Grove, Sandy Run, Sand Hill, Mt Olive and Hampton Cemetery. I'm sure there are many more. these are the ones I can recall quickly. Check out the Hampton county museum. They have several books that list all cemeteries, directions to them and most of the people buried there.

into Eternal Life on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Hospice Center of
Charleston, Mt. Pleasant.

Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service for Mrs.
Owens on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at 11 o'clock at James A. Dyal Funeral
Home Chapel, Summerville.

Burial will be private.

Mrs. Owens was born April 5, 1922 in Varnville, SC daughter of the
late Pink Jarrell and Norma Jarrell.

Mrs. Owens and her late husband Ralph retired from a family owned
business in Walterboro.

Survivors include two daughters; Dustyn Nicole Owens of Johns Island
and Ann Owens Hennies and her husband Wallace of Summerville and two
sons; Ralph G. Owens and Jack D. Owens both of Walterboro, one
sister; Ernestine Harrison of Savannah, GA and several nieces and
nephews.

SAVANNAH - Emily Ernestine Jarrell Harrison, 84, passed away on
November 9, 2009.

Emily was born November 5, 1925 in Hampton County, SC to the late
Pink Hamilton Jarrell and Nora Lee Stanley Jarrell. She was a member
of Morningside Baptist Church in Savannah, and retired after a
fulfilling retail career in Savannah. She is preceded in death by her
beloved husband of 60 years Heber Harrison.

She is survived by her two sons Ronald Harrison (Diane) of Rincon and
Spencer Harrison (Judy) of Savannah, three grandchildren Todd
Harrison of Springfield, Teress Harrison Bradley of Ft. Lauderdale,
and Melissa Harrison of Savannah, three great grandchildren Zane,
Liam and Reagan Harrison of Springfield, several nieces and nephews
and her beloved dog Tessa.

Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Wednesday, November 11 at
Fairhaven Funeral Home. Graveside Service will be held at 1pm on

and had retired from Carolina Eastman, formerly Kodak.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Northcutt Horton of Pelion; daughters
and son-in-law, Misty Lee Horton of Pelion, Toni Marie and Donnie
Cranfield of New Bern, NC; sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and

Nixville - Gertrude Ginn Jarrell Kersey, 76, died Monday evening,
April 29, 2002 at her residence after an extended illness.

Born Aug. 30, 1925 in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late
Frank Ginn, Sr. and Arizona Ginn.

Mrs. Kersey had retired from the Allendale Garment Plant as a
seamstress and later did in in-home nursing.

She was a member of the Nixville Baptist Church.

She was the widow of James Wesley Jarrell, Sr. and Paul Kersey and was
predeceased by son, David F. Jarrell, sister, Eunice Ginn Winn and
brothers, Frank Ginn, Jr., Freddie Ginn and William Ginn.

Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, James Wesley and Carolyn
Jarrell, Jr., Danny Hugh and Georgia Ann Jarrell and John Charles and
Gay Jarrell, all of Nixville; daughters and son-in-law, Evelyn Jarrell
Tant of Nixxville and Mary Jarrell and Jerry Hadwin of Hampton;
brothers and sisters-in-law, Coleman and Betty Ginn, Herman and Marie
Ann Ginn and Benjamin and Elaine Ginn; sisters and brother-in-law,
Eloise Ginn, Joyce Ginn, Elaine Ginn Cooler and Julia Ginn and Bobby
Tant; grandchildren, Rebecca Jarrell Smith, Diane Jarrell Malphrus,
Pat Tant, Detra Tant Loadholt, Billy Tant, David Tant, Wes Jarrell,
Tammy Jarrell Harvey, Pam Jarrell Moore, Hope Hadwin Macfie, Chris
Hadwin, Liz Jarrell, Karen Jarrell and Nickie Jarrell and 19 great
grandchildren.

Friends may call after 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, May 1 at the residence
and prior to service on Thursday. Funeral: 1:00 p. m. Thursday, May 2
in the Nixville Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Jimmie Rholleter and
Rev. Bob Johnson.

It sounds as though you are also looking for relatives from the Hampton area, in perticuraly Sandy Run Baptist. I have a copy from the pages of the Prince William Primitive Baptist Church (Brunson) dated: 15 FEB 1834 that list some of the first members of Sandy Run. Your Rachael Tuten is on the list, but I do not see a William or Thomas.

Mrs. Marie Ellis at the Hampton Museum & Visitors Center may have an answer for you. She has proven to be a terrific source of information for me.

Mrs. Clara Mae Altman, 90, died Dec. 6, 2000 at Westview Nursing
Home.

The native of Hampton, S.C., was a longtime resident of Port
Wentworth and a member of First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth.

SURVIVORS: a son, Roscoe Altman of Bakersfield, Calif.; three
daughters, Elaine Ellis and Malinda Richardson, both of Rincon, and
LaJuan Holcomb of Port Wentworth; a brother, Milton Jarrell of
North Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Annie Winstead of Appleton,
S.C., and Corrine Crosby of North Charleston; seven grandchildren,
six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Massey
Chapel, Garden City.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 2 p.m. Saturday in Thames Cemetery near Varnville,

Barney Milton Jarrell, husband of Martha Rivers Jarrell, entered into
eternal rest Sunday, December 31, 2006. Residence, Hanahan, South
Carolina.

The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Barney M. Jarrell are
invited to attend the funeral service of the former at J. Henry Stuhr,
Inc., Greenridge Road Chapel, Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at
two-thirty o'clock.

Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park.

Friends may call at Stuhr's Greenridge Road Chapel this Tuesday
evening from five until seven o'clock.

Born December 3, 1915 in Varnville, South Carolina, Mr. Jarrell was
the son of James Jacob Jarrell, Jr. and Hattie Clara Winn Jarrell.

He was a member of Remount Baptist Church, where he served as a
Deacon.

Mr. Jarrell was a US Marine Corps veteran of World War II and retired
from the Charleston Naval Shipyard after forty years of service as an
electrician. He was also a member of Pearl Harbor Survivors
Association, the Exchange Club of Hanahan, NARFE, East Cooper
Outboard Motor Club-Goldbug and the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Surviving Mr. Jarrell are his wife: Martha R. Jarrell of Hanahan;
three daughters: Shyla Shockley and her husband, Stan of Greenville,
SC, Shylene Jarrell of Ridgecrest, NC and Alice O'Brien and her
husband, Glenn of Winter Springs, Florida; a sister: Corrine Crosby
of N. Charleston; seven grandchildren: Erica Shockley, Meredith Davis
and husband, Josiah, Austin Howell and wife, Lisa, Ryan Howell, Alex
Howell, Wesley Howell and John O'Brien; numerous nieces and nephews.

WINSTEAD, Annie APPLETON - Mrs. Annie Jarrell Winstead, 86, of 1897
Appleton Road near Allendale, died early Monday morning at her
residence after a brief illness.

Mrs. Winstead was born in Hampton County, August 16, 1919; a daughter
of the late James Jacob Jarrell and Hattie Clara Winn Jarrell.

She was a former Seamstress and Inspector with both the Estill and
Allendale Manufacturing Companies, and was a member of the Mill Creek
Primitive Baptist Church.

She was the widow of the late Claude Winstead.

Surviving are, sons, Claude E. Winstead of Allendale, Jim Winstead of
Cottageville, and Dennis Winstead of Fairfax; daughter, Sara Ann
Sanders of St. Matthews; brother ,Barney Jarrell of Charleston; and
sister, Corrine "Pet" Crosby of Charleston. There are eight grand
children and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Peeples
Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street in Hampton,
conducted by Elder Robert Dobson, with burial in the Thames Cemetery
near Varnville.

Friends may call at the Chapel in Hampton from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday,
and Wednesday until the hour of service.

Frank Lester Jarrell

BRUNSON, SC - Mr. Frank Lester Jarrell, 93, of Prince William Road,
Brunson, entered into eternal rest Friday, April 16, 2010, at his
residence.

He was the widower of the late Myrtis Lee Gray Jarrell.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Monday, April 19, 2010, at The
Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel.
Interment will follow in Rivers Cemetery.

Mr. Jarrell was born March 20, 1917, in Hampton County and was a son
of the late Martin Jarrell and Lily Stanley Jarrell. He was a retired
mechanic with Westinghouse and a farmer. Mr. Jarrell was a member of
Brunson Baptist Church and will be remembered for his love of farming
and for being a hard worker.

Surviving are: his children, Margie J. Corbin and her husband Kenneth
"Tubby" of Varnville, Sharon J. Crosby and her husband Hillard of
Grays, Ann J. McMillan of Goose Creek and Tammy J. Rogers and her
husband David of Anderson; brothers, Martin Jarrell, Jr. of Hampton,
Jimmy Jarrell of Varnville and Wilson Jarrell of Hampton; 9
grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
a daughter, Joyce Mishoe; and several brothers and sisters.

Moncks Corner - Mrs. Marie Jarrell Kinard, 70, died April 5 in a
Charleston hospital.

Funeral services were held today in Barnwell.

Burial will be in the Barnwell County Cemetery.

Mrs. Kinard was a native of Hampton County. She was a member of
Allens Methodist Church, Barnwell.

Surviving are her husband, E.L. Kinard; a son, Elizia Kinard,
Williston; three daughters, Mrs. Ellie Lee Branon, Williston, Mrs.
Irene McKenna, John's Island and Mrs. Eva Outen, Goose Creek; two

Mr. John Edward Jarrell, 68, of Hopewell Road near Brunson, died
Thursday evening, August 20th, 2009, at his residence after an
extended illness.

Born December 1, 1940, in Hampton County, he was the son of the late
John Thomas Jarrell and Lillian Woods Jarrell. He was a farmer, a
member of the Gifford Hunting Club and a life member of the North
American Hunting Club. He attended Restoration Church as well as
Hopewell Baptist Church. He will be remembered for his love of the
out of doors as well as being a loving husband, father, brother,
grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Marie Crosby Jarrell of the home;
sons: Tony Edward (Jennifer) Jarrell of Brunson and Kevin Eugene
Jarrell (Ellen) of Hampton; step-son: Thomas L. Herndon, Jr. (Ali) of
Estill; daughters: Teresa (Sonny) Stanley of Varnville, Janet J.

JARRELL, Lee - Mr. Lee Ellis Jarrell, Sr., 81, died early Monday
morning, November 19, 2007 at his residence in Varnville after an
extended illness.

Born July 15, 1926 in Hampton County, he was the son of the late J. T.
Jarrell and Lillian Woods Jarrell.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War II,
was a retired farmer and had recently been working at the Hampton
County Recycling Center near Scotia.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and was an avid
hunter.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Hughey Jarrell of the home; one son,
Lee Ellis Jarrell, Jr. and wife Ann of Easley; one daughter, Patricia
Cissy Jarrell of Varnville; 4 brothers, Sonny Jarrell, Bobby Dean
Jarrell and Tommy Jarrell, all of Estill and Edward Jarrell of
Gifford; 5 sisters, Betty Howard and Katie Jarrell, both of Savannah,
Virgie Plummer of Varnville, Sadie Moody and Lillie Jablonski, both of
Jacksonville, FL There are 4 grandchildren, Tommy Wilson, Linda Eller,
Stephanie Bishop and Tabby Ginn and 4 great grandchildren, Codie Ginn,

Mr. Jarrell is also survived by his beloved cat, Charlie.

He was predeceased by his son, Jim Jarrell and his grandson, Chad

Wednesday at 2 PM in the Live Oak Cemetery near the Nixville Community
in Hampton County, conducted by Rev. Michael Frederickson and directed

at his residence.

Mr. Peeples was born on November 29, 1921, in Hampton, SC, a son of
the late Harry Hayward Peeples and Elee Jarrell Peeples.

He was a lifelong resident of Beaufort.

He served in the U.S. Army and then retired from the National Guard.

He retired from Civil Service on Parris Island where he was employed
at Motor Transport.

He was a member of Beaufort Saddle & Bridle Club, Beaufort Squares,
The Palmetto Pigeon Club and Meadowbrook Baptist Church.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and the two-way radio.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, a son Larry Peeples, and his

Hayward Peeples, 85, husband of Amelia Peeples, died April 16, 2007,
at his residence.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, April 21, at Anderson Funeral
Home from 6-8pm.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 23, at 1:00pm in the
Chapel of Anderson Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Peeples was born on November 29, 1921, in Hampton, SC, a son of
the late Harry Hayward Peeples and Elee Jarrell Peeples.

He was a lifelong resident of Beaufort.

He served in the U.S. Army and then retired from the National Guard.

He retired from Civil Service on Parris Island where he was employed
at Motor Transport.

He was a member of Beaufort Saddle & Bridle Club, Beaufort Squares,
The Palmetto Pigeon Club and Meadowbrook Baptist Church.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and the two-way radio.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, a son Larry Peeples, and his
wife Joann of Charleston, two daughters, Patricia Yoakum and her
husband David and Denise Smith and her husband Don, all of Beaufort,
a brother Herman Peeples of Gardens Corner, a sister, Dee Gallatin of

GRAY, Addie HAMPTON - Mrs. Addie Jarrell Gray, 94, widow of Wyman
Benjamin Gray, died Wednesday evening in the Commander Nursing Center
in Florence.

Mrs. Gray was born in Hampton County, June 26, 1912; a daughter of the
late Jacob J. Jarrell and Nora Rivers Jarrell Cope.

She had retired from Westinghouse Corp. in Hampton after 33 years in
the Finishing Dept. and was a member of Local Union #3130. She was a
member of the Hampton Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving are: son, Wyman B. "Bo" Gray and wife Quida of Meggett;
daughters, Virginia Roberts and husband Jimmy of Port Royal, Evelyn
"Pete" Currie and of Charleston, and Miriam Roberts, and husband
Carrol of Florence; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Gray of Beaufort and
son-in-law, James Altman of Florida; 19 grandchildren, 40 great
grandchildren, and a number of great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Gray was predeceased by a daughter, Bernice Altman and a son,
Gene Gray.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday in the Hampton Primitive
Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Robert Dobson, with burial in the
Johnson St. Paul Cemetery, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in
Hampton.

The family suggests that those who wish may send memorials to the
Hampton Primitive Baptist Church, 540 Co-Op Road West, Hampton, SC
29924.

PUNTA GORDA, FL - Mrs. Bernice Gray Altman, 73, went home with the
angels on March 26, 2003.

The daughter of Addie Jarrell Gray and the late Wyman Gray, she was
born August 29, 1929 in Hampton, SC and lived with her husband in
Margate, FL for over 30 years.

She and her husband moved to Punta Gorda, FL over 2 years ago.

Bernice is survived by her wonderful husband of almost 55 years, James
W. Altman of Punta Gorda, FL; her mother, Addie Jarrell Gray of
Charleston; 2 sons, James Craig Altman of Wake Forest, NC and William
Trent Altman of Pt. Charlotte, FL; 1 daughter, Pamela (Harald) Gumbart
of Punta Gorda, FL; 3 sisters, Evelyn (Pete), Virginia (Punk), and
Miriam; 2 brothers, Wyman (Bo) and Gene; 7 grandchildren, Sandra
(James), Jason (Kim), Blaine, Melissa, Brandi, Saira and Cheyanne; 7
great-grandchildren: Jessica, Tyler, Austin, Laura, Colby, Sieanna
and Hoover, Jr.

Bernice is and will always be a wonderful daughter, a loving wife, the
best Mom ever, the most caring grandma and the greatest great-grandma
ever. You will be missed so very much, but I know you are with the
angels now. Peace be with you forever.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 PM in the chapel of
PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME in Hampton, conducted by Elder Robert

8 PM and until the hour of service on Sunday.

Gene Gray, 69, husband of Bonnie Cook Gray, of Beaufort, died
Thursday, May 18, 2006, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Anderson
Funeral Home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Sea Island Presbyterian
Church, with burial in Beaufort National Cemetery.

Mr. Gray was born Nov. 17, 1936, in Hampton, a son of Addie Jarrell
Gray and the late Wyman Gray.

He was a veteran of the Navy. He was a firefighter with the civil
service and retired in 1987 after 26 years of service. He lived in
Beaufort County for 38 years.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years of Beaufort; his mother of
Florence; two sons, Mickey G. Gray and Mark A. Gray, both of
Beaufort; three sisters, Evelyn Currie, Virginia Roberts and Miriam
Roberts; and a brother, Wyman Gray.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Altman.

Memorials may be made to Friends of Caroline Hospice, 1110 13th St.,
Port Royal, SC 29935.

Hi Donna, I am not real closley linked to to the Tuten clan and only distantly. Sorry that I can't be of more help to you. I found that in the Hampton area of S.C. there are alot lines that I am connected to. But that is not an unusual thing there as it is still a small town. Alot of interesting history. My lines include Belger...my maiden name..Rentz,Chassereau, Heirs,Heape, Malphrus who are my closest names, my more direct lines. I am not aware of any ancestors in the Tallahassee area.

I found your query about Rachel Tuten recently when I "Googled" an ancestor, Absolum Green Tuten. I replied to Debbie that you had corresponded with then about a post mentioning a cemetary in Hampton County, SC. I wanted to bring my recent post about a letter from Tuten cousins in Fl. to your attention since the names match up with the children of Rachel. She's mentioned as being in good health at age 78, but no name mentioned, just Father. The letter was written by Joseph M. Tuten in 1866. There's other information in my other post.

Well, thanks Debbie, I thought when I replied directly to that post it would alert the person who posted it. I thought your name was on it.

I saw that you had discussed some of the Tuten family with Tony Tuten and mentioned your location in Florida. Did you have family around Tallahassee in the 1860's? I have a letter written in 1866 from a cousin in Tallahasee to George Washington Tuten in Beaufort District. I think the signature is Joseph M. Tuten. In the letter he mentioned settling affairs in the death of his brother A(?).B.Tuten on Sept. 21, 1866. He also mentions P.M. Tuten, McAlpin and a Bill? in Jasper who was a storekeeper and Clerk of Court. He shares news of a Henry in Texas who has passed and mentions Hamp's family in Vixburg, Tennessee (his spelling) and Elmira. He also talks about a T.P. Tuten and little Tim.
Do these ring any bells?

I only have family trees for my direct lineage and not any of the cousins' lines. These may be descendents of Redding Cannon Tuten, brother of Absolum Green Tuten.

Funny thing, in going through my grandmother's papers I found info. sent in 1994 from Bruce Thomas Tuten in Asheville, N.C. He was working an a comprehensive book on the Tutens and mentions that the biggest question that he got was who was the husband of Rachel. Hazard a guess that's the same question that began this thread.

Wow, Rachel, I didn't know if I would here from you since this thread is so old. The info that you mentioned about the cemetary is in the 2nd message in this thread. I've pasted it below. My mom says that my dad can probably tell me where it is...I just want to preserve that knowledge for my daughter. There's only one member of our immediate branch of the family left in that area and my grandmother's home may be sold soon, so I don't know if I'll find myself back there much in the future.

I caught this old message thread between you and Tony Tuten when I Googled an ancestor's name: "George Washington Tuten." You mentioned the old cemetary on Robert Deloach's land. My grandmother, Martha Susan Tuten Clary, took me there about 20 years ago, I would guess. Can you give me the exact location? I don't think that I could find it again and I would hate for the knowledge of the location to be lost to our branch of the family. I'm an only grandchild and my dd is her only great grandchild. My grandmother and much of our part of the Tuten's in Hampton County was a member of Steep Bottom Baptist Church.
