Recently, AERIAL VIEW enhancement links have been added to the following SC Cemetery GPS Project county webpages.

ABBEVILLE http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/01-abbev...

ANDERSON http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/04-ander...

GREENWOOD http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/24-green... (currently under construction)

GREENVILLE http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/23-green...

LAURENS http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/30-laure...

McCORMICK http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/35-mccor... (currently under construction)

NEWBERRY http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/36-newbe...

OCONEE http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/37-ocone...

PICKENS http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/39-picke...

SPARTANBURG http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/42-spart...

NOTE: This project cannot provide you with cemetery tombstone inscriptions.

In many counties, local Genealogical/Historical Societies have compiled Cemetery Survey Books that they have For-Sale. Normally, if survey books are available, the book's Surname Indexes will be available on-line for searching. This will give you the ability to determine what tombstone inscriptions each book contains.

1. Project’s MAP VIEW links will provide you with printable cemetery finding Road Maps.

2. Projects’ AERIAL VIEW links (NEW) will provide you with an overhead satellite view of the cemetery.

3. Google’s STREET VIEW will provide you with a view of the cemetery, as if you were standing on a nearby main road, and looking towards the cemetery.

This is a non-copyrighted project and you can reuse any of the on-line info as you see fit.

CAN YOU BE OF ANY HELP..? If so, Contact Gary Flynn at ke8fd@bellsouth.net

Paul Kankula
gcgenweb@bellsouth.net
Thank you for the response. I made a couple trips to SC,
with the express purpose of locating the cemetery. No one
in the area seemed to have any info on a "Dyson Family"
cemetery. I found later it is now known as the Williamson
Cemetery. I'm pleased you took photos...my health will no
longer permit me to go running around the country as I once
did.

John Sanders and Marshall Edwin Dyson are my direct great
and great great grandfathers. Marshall Edwin is burried
in the small country community of King, Texas. Most of
my family are also burried there. Unfortunately, I have
no idea where John Sanders is burried. His wife, Jane
(Graham) Dyson is burried in Mississippi, but John Sanders
is not with her. Thanks again.
Thanks for contacting me on this. Since I first posted this, I have searched and found this cemetery located in Saluda County, South Carolina. There is an area of Saluda County which is known by many as the Dyson community. I am not related to the Dyson's, but was searching for another relative of mine on my grandmother's side of the family. I visited the graveyard last year and took many pictures of the cemetery which can be viewed on findagrave.com Just place in the search engine Dyson in Saluda County, South Carolina.

I'm not sure you will see this after seven years, but just
in case you should check this:

Dyson, SC was named for Col. Abraham Dyson's son Capt.
Thomas Jefferson Dyson. I am also a direct descendant
of John Sanders and Marshall Edwin Dyson.

The Abraham/Abram mentioned above identified brothers
James and Daniel in a LWT. Our family's ancestor was
a John Dyson. John Sanders was one of his sons.

This John Dyson was probably a brother to Abraham, James
and Daniel.

I searched for the cemetery in Dyson, SC a couple of times,
but never found it. The only thing left in Dyson is a
black church and a street sign with the word "Dyson" on it.

I found out a few years ago, the cemetery is now known as
the Williamson Cemetery, but Col. Abraham Dyson and his
family are the oldest graves there.

Out of curiousity, are you a Coryell County, Texas Dyson?

You might try the census records between 1900 and 1930 for Laurens County (Waterloo) or Greenwood County. Given his approximate date of birth, you may find that he registered in the WWI registration. That doesn't mean he served in WWI--just that he registered. Most public libraries have access to Heritage Quest or Ancestry. Both sites have census records and Ancestry has the WWI registrations.

I would love to know if anyone has any information about the family of my great grandfather. I've been trying to fill out my family tree and no one seems to know anything about his parents or any of his brothers or sisters. He was born around 1889 in either Waterloo or Greenwood. He married Virginia Hawkins and lived in Stoney Point for years. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

Sarah Sullivan Ervin, 1886-1973, Ware Shoals, Greenwood County

I am trying to find anyone who might be familiar with the research of Mrs. Ervin. I am particularly looking for someone who knew her personally or might know where she got the majority of her information, particularly for the book, South Carolina in the Revolution.

While her book was very well researched in general, I cannot find a source for the information she reported that William Ball married Sarah Martin in 1769. William Ball and his wife came to Laurens County SC from VA in about 1784 and his first wife died in about 1798. While the marriage did not take place in Laurens, there may be some incidental record there.

I am locked into a rather interesting debate with a cousin who asserts that Sarah Martin never existed, and Mrs. Ervin's assertion of this married date is not "PROOF" (her caps, not mine). I, on the other hand, cannot imagine why Mrs. Ervin would generally be so meticulous with her research in general and then just make up a wife and a date out of thin air.

I suspect from the subject matter of the book that she did a lion's share of her research in Laurens County, but she lived in Greenwood County at the time of her death,..

Any help in pointing me in the direction of Mrs. Ervin is much appreciated.

I do have Amanda Rotton as the sister of William Smyly 'Roton/Rotton' Rauton. Their grandfather is the earliers ancestors I have proven, John Rotton, Sr. whose son John Rotton Jr. is the father of Amanda and William S. Rotton.

The names are spelled all over the place with Rotton the spelling used in the earliest census records. Also find Roton, Roden, Rhoden, Rotton, Rotten, and my later folks Rauton.
Thanks for the information.

I found the following information. I was also able to find Bessie listed in 1900 Abbeville County, South Carolina census as Sarah E. Wilson. In the death index of South Carolina she was listed as Elizabet Wilson and her date of death was listed as August 5, 1916 (Vol 70, certificate 37667). The two children buried next to her supports both the 1910 census and the family stories.

By chance did your mother speak of her uncle, Harry Ramage Simmons? I was able to obtain a copy of his death certificate from Florida. While he died in Florida, he was buried in the O'Conee Cemetery in Athens, Georgia. I have been searching for the maiden name of his wife, Mattie E. (born ca. 1882).

Thanks, Marty Ramage

>From book titled: Some Cemetery Records of
Abbeville County, South Carolina

Long Canes Cemetery

J.T.
Thanks for the information. Robert's first wife was named Sarah. The 1910 census lists her as Sarah E. Family lore is that they had two sons but both died young. She wore black mourning clothes for them the rest of her life. He hated black after that and passed that aversion on to my mother (daughter of Robert & Annie).

His wife is Annie Laura Mullikin born 13 October 1891 and died 9 September 1971. She is buried at Edgewood Cemetery. There is some question about Robert Simmons date of birth. I have it as 30 January 1878. My mother told me years ago why there was a discrepancy but I can't remember what it was. She thought 1878 was the correct date.

I am also interested in the Wier Clan. Have you been able to connect your Thomas to Alexander, Jr.(1781-1850) or Alexander, III (1816-86)? Alexander, Sr. (1750-90) died on a British Prison Ship in Charleston Harbor leaving his widow, Mary Caldwell Stewart Wier and his unborn son Alexander, Jr. Mary married Robert J. Richey shortly after Alexander Sr., death and had a very large family. I know from papers left behind that Robert held Alexander, Jr. in very high regard and treated like an oldest son.

If you would like to contact me directly my address is:
Fred.Hawthorne@Comcast.Net

South Carolina counties and districts are complicated. In the case of Abbeville District vs Abbeville County, it is referring to the same area. This area was called Abbeville District from 1800-1868. An excellent booklet titled "The Formation of Counties in South Carolina" is a very helpful source.
Also, you might search for Thomas Wier in the online database at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.

Thank you for this information! Very helpful. Do you know what the term "District" means in Abbeville District. Was there a time period when there were no Counties, only Districts?
Rock Presbyterian Church is located off Highway 72 not far from the intersection of Highway 72 and Highway 246. This would be near the community of Coronaca if you are looking at a map. I think there is a sign for the church on Highway 72. According to the book Greenwood County Sketches written by Margaret Watson, the Wiers are buried at Rock Presbyterian Church. More than likely, their land was located in what was then Abbeville District since they moved into the area long before Greenwood County was formed in 1897. Unfortunately, a courthouse fire in 1872 in Abbeville burned the land deeds. The area around Rock Presbyterian Church would have been in Abbeville District.

I am looking for the location of the home of Thomas and Mary Wier near Greenwood, South Carolina. They both died in 1851 and I believe they are buried at the old Rock Presbyterian Church. Can anyone tell me where this church is located or where the Wiers lived? Thank you.

Greenwood City schools?

I'm trying to find schools in the city of Greenwood that my grandmother, Betty Huyler Albea, would have gone to. She's past away now but we have notes about what she remembered. She didn't remember names but knew that they were in the city. Her memory wasn't that great and some things that she mentioned were:

* Lived with her uncle Albert Smith on Main St. - 1st school was across the street
* Woodside
* Montegee (sounds like)
* Jordan St.
* Magnolia

She only went to school until she was 15 years old when she got married in 1947 - or she may have left school sooner than that. Compound that with the fact that she moved back and forth from Greenwood to Atlanta, spent some time in a children's home & was in an accident at a young age that affected her early memories, and it's very hard to track down her schools.

It's a jumbled mess, but maybe someone with a memory of Greenwood in the 40s might be able to make since of it.
