Yes, thank you! I have made a connection that is also researching that name, but so far it looks like we don't have a match. I actually sent off for that obit last week, before I knew that it might not the right one. He probably fits into my family tree somehow, so it will still be useful info.

Missy

Is there a way to search the vital records from a Mac? I see the Greenville library has an index, but it requires a plugin that I don't have... I'm from Orlando, but I'm going to try to take a trip this summer and visit. Hopefully that will give me some time in the library too.

I found William's death certificate on Ancestry, but the image is so very light that I almost can't read it. I believe it says 'not given' for both parents =(

Oh well, the hunt is half the fun!

Missy

Recently, AERIAL VIEW enhancement links have been added to the following SC Cemetery GPS Project webpages.

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/01-abbev...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/04-ander...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/23-green...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/30-laure...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/36-newbe...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/37-ocone...

http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/39-picke...

NOTE: This project cannot provide you with cemetery tombstone inscriptions.

In many counties, local Genealogical/Historical Societies have compiled Cemetery Survey Books that they have For-Sale. Normally, if survey books are available, the book's Surname Indexes will be available on-line for searching. This will give you the ability to determine what tombstone inscriptions each book contains.

1. Project’s MAP VIEW links will provide you with printable cemetery finding Road Maps.

2. Projects’ AERIAL VIEW links (NEW) will provide you with an overhead satellite view of the cemetery.

3. Google’s STREET VIEW will provide you with a view of the cemetery, as if you were standing on a nearby main road, and looking towards the cemetery.

This is a non-copyrighted project and you can reuse any of the on-line info as you see fit.

Paul Kankula

Would any of you who are on this thread consider doing the 23 & Me DNA test which is currently priced at $99. I am trying to confirm Spillers "Cousins" that were matched on Ancestry.com DNA last month But plan on also doing full test for $99 on the 23&me site. We are fairly sure that both parties are descended from George Spillers Sr who died in 1833 in Greenville Co SC. One ( my Husband) is from son Carey Spillers b 1804 Sc died Marshall Co Ms and the other is from one of the other 2 brothers' child who migrated to Arkansas
Have heard that William Eli Turnbough (Turnbow/Turnbo/Turnboe/Turnbagh/Turnbogh/Turnbugh) married a Jane Gilbreath ca. 1794 in Greenville, SC.

Does anyone have any further details on this couple?

I have heard that William died prior to 1800, if so what happened to Jane?

I have also heard that William (and family?) migrated to Australia. One branch of the family states that the family there tried to reconnect in the 1930's.

Can anyone help me with this wall?
Did William receive land in Greenville Co.?

I hoped to help you if I could before you invested much time & effort into this Issac. Wish you could turn out to be part of this family as they are very interesting to follow. Best wishes.
Judy,
Thank you so much for the quick reply and the incredible information you supplied. Based on your information on Isaac Green and further information I was able to find on the Family Tree Maker site regarding Phoebe West (Isaac's wife)it appears my James Green(1780-1856) is not their child. Many of the researchers on my line have incorporated Captain Isaac Green as his father others are using the Cherokee line of Gardner "Young Wolf" Green as the father of Isaac but I haven't been able to verify that either.
I am beginning to feel like Thomas Edison where I have just discovered one more way not to make a light bulb.
Again,thank you for your help.
Ray

I believe this Isaac Green to be a son of Joseph Green whose will is on file in the NC Archives in Raleigh NC. The will date 29 Sept 1771 was proved in Jan 1772 and his children are named, Isaac bein one. The county at the time was Tryon & included parts of North & South Carolina. Joseph was identified in Samuel Coburn's Militia Company in 1747 and apparently had a land grant issued in 1753. This will be something you'll want to pursue in your research.

His son Isaac signed for his inheritance: "Received of James McAfee the Sum of one Hundred and Ten Pounds curant money of North Carolina in good Trade agreable to the former prasement and Do Hereby acknowledg my Self my heirs and as Signs forever fully Satisfied there With for my part of an estate Left and bequeathed to me by my father Joseph Green Dessed and I do hereby forever quite and Clame to any of sc. astate Ither Real or parsonal Received this Second Day of July 1784."
The receipt was witnessed and signed by Jacob Collins and Mary Collins with her mark.

Now as to the Isaac Green in Greenville SC, I found this info in my files:

18 February 1792, Isaac sold 100 acres of his property in Greenville County, SC, to Elisha Smith. For 10# sterling, Mr Smith received acreage on both sides of Kemps Brook, the border crossed the Caen swamp and mouth of a small branch between where Smith and Elisha Simmons lived. It included the plantation where Mr Smith lived, and was the SE corner of the 692 acres granted 7 November 1791 by Gov Charles Pinckney to Isaac. Isaac signed the transaction, which was witnessed by John Blackwall, Hugh Parks, and John Anderson. Mr Blackwell signed an oath before Robert McAfee. The deed was recorded 1 July 1798, in book E, page 56.

After Isaac himself died:
Letters of administration granted to Abraham Green on the estate of Isaac Green, dec'd, on 8 Feb. 1831.
4 March 1831, Greenville Co. South Carolina Estates #178: Captain Isaac Green
Inventory of goods and chattels of Isaac Green, deceased, made by Abraham Green, administrator. Buyers at the estate sale included Phebe Green, Isaac Green Jr., Abraham Green, Jacob Green, Leroy H. Green, Clabron Waddill, and Joseph Bates.
Final settlement of estate of Isaac Green made 14 May 1832 by administrator Abraham Green.
---after taking into consideration previous advances made to said heirs, total distribution was made to the widow and eight children; after deducting the widow's 1/3 the remaining $4464.88 was divided in equal lots of $558.11 to each of the eight children (or representatives) as follows:
Joseph Green, L. H. Green, William Green, Joseph Bates, Abraham Green, C. Waddill, Isaac Green, Jacob Green.

Later his family made the following transactions abstracted from the Greenville County, SC, deeds:
S:1--Phoebe Green to son Jacob Green, both of Greenville District; bill of sale 23 Sept. 1835;--negro boy Pleasant, aged 4 years.
U:194--Joseph Green and Frances Benson; --marriage contract dated 3 Jan 1843.
U:243--Jacob Green on deed dated 11 Sept 1843.
U:263--Phoebe Green to James McCarter; Mortgage 16 Oct 1843; Mortgage on three negroes, man Willis, woman Mary, and her youngest child Betsy, for $500. Joseph Green Wittness.
U:579--Leroy H. Green to Robert Wynne; Deed 9 Dec 1844 his wife Fanny released.

Hope this helps in some way.
Judy

Linda,
Hope you are still around after all of this time.
I have the same Isaac Green with Phoebe as a wife but can't I.D. his father. I believe Isaac is the father of my James Green who was a Methodist minister who started his family in the Cherokee Nation East of Tennessee and then moved on to Alabama in by 1850 and finally on to Texas. If this is indeed the right Isaac he is my 4th great grandfather. If you have any documentation on Isaac it would be great if you would share. I would be happy to share any info I have.
Ray

Conflicting Green Family Data From the 1850 & 1860 Censuses

The SC Census of 1850 shows my GGrandfather William Green's family with their ages listed as follows:
George (40)
Ester (30)
Narcissa (16)
William (13)
John (10)
Jim (8)
Elizabeth (7)
Rebecca (3)

10 years later, the 1860 census listed this same family of the Glassy Mt. Div. as:
George (75)
Hester (50)
Elizabeth (16) *(eventually married William Gosnell)
Rebecca (12)**(eventually married Morris Gosnell)
Lewis (9)

By 1860, William had left to teach in St. Charles MO where he met and married Elizabeth Turnbaugh. Also, Narcissa was married to Nelson Moss and a new child, Lewis, had been added to the family group.

But look at the age discrepancies of both George and Ester/Hester. Could these simply be errors in transcription?

If not, one way I can make sense of these differences in ages is that if William's father and grandfather were both named George Green and the father is listed there in 1850 while the grandfather heads the family in 1860. After all, 1860 was on the eve of the Civil War and perhaps father George, with sons John and Jim, had already left for training leaving George's father, George Sr. in charge.
But, then, how does that explain the 20 year age jump in 10 years for Ester/Hester unless they, too, were two different people as well.

Any other suggestions? I'd be very grateful to hear from those in the know of the Greens of Greenville Co. SC who may have some helpful clues to solve this puzzle.

Thank you,

Suellen

Thanks, yes, I believe your line and my line are related. Recently I was looking at a copy of the book "Pioneers of Marshall County, KY: with Edwards, Hiett, Pace, Starks and allied families". That book has a good bit of information on the Marshall County Hiett's with sources.

According to that book both your line and mine trace back to a William Henry Hiett from SC who migrated to KY in 1825. My John Hiett and your Aaron Hiett are both sons of William Henry according to the book.

So thanks for the reply; it is good to be in contact.

My question stands if anyone can help us pick up the Hiett line in SC. I'm not sure what are the best sources of information for the late 1700's for the Greenville area.

Not sure about SC, but up in NC in the early 70s hospitals were still listing births and hospital discharges in the locals newspapers. If the baby was adopted there is a chance the birth wasn't listed, however, there may have been a notice of Mom's discharge from the hospital. Of course there will probably be more than one for the time frame, and it's a long shot, but can't hurt to try. (HIPAA laws today don't allow these notices.) Also, if there was an adoption, even back in 1971 chances are pretty good that SC, same as NC, won't allow the info to be released by doctors, hospitals or other agencies without jumping thru hoops. Best wishes with your search.

For the past 3 years, my friend Gary Flynn and I have been GPS Mapping most all of the known cemeteries in Greenville County. See http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/23-green....

Now were to the point-in-time where gas is so expensive, that we would probably end up spending $10 on every new cemetery that we would attempt to find. These are the ones that are colored green on the above list and normally are in the northern part of the county.

If you happen to live in Greenville County and would like to be of help, e-mail me direct at gcgenweb@bellsouth.net.

Paul Kankula

I will try to contact the parish where I think they were married in Greenville. I was aware from conversations with people in Vital Records in Greenville and SC that any information they might have would be in the SC Archives since all marrriages, births, and other information were stored there.

Again, thank you for your prompt reply,
Libby Panetta

Hi,

if they are the Oren H. & Annie L. Hunt that I find living in Greenville in the 1910 census with daughter Mary L., age 1, then unfortunately they married before the time that South Carolina started recording marriage licenses (it began in 1911; they appear to have married around 1907). If you know what church they belonged to, you might be able to find record of their wedding there; other than that, your best bet is probably other family members - posting your query in a public forum like this one was a good move. We are in the process of indexing the marriage announcements that appeared in the Greenville News, but we're only up to 1902, so even if there was one, we won't have it indexed for quite a while.
If you have any other questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to contact us in the South Carolina Room.
