Britton or Britten Neal is a challenge to those of us who hope to separate the South Carolina Neals from the O'Neals or Neallys. Spelling was far from certain, as I have a record of a deed from John Neel of Union County in March 1800, and his name is spelled Neel, Neal and O'Nall in the same document.

I have been working on a database for the colonial land grants and later state land grants to anyone named Neal or Neel (and several variant spellings) in upcountry South Carolina between 1750 and 1800.

Given the constant in-migration from Ireland, separating out some of these families is almost impossible, but I have made a little progress.

I'm resesearching some GREENs from Greenville SC that may have filed for Cherokee enrollment. They may have intermarried with the NEAL family in that region. Do you have info on any Neals that came out of Greenville/Pendleton that later may have filed for Indian/Cherokee enrollment? Thanks

The information you give in your response is fairly vague. If you will contact me privately, we can exchange information. There are Neals in both locations, but until I know what research you have done it would be imposssible to know whether any of my information might help you.

My g-g-g-grandfather was Baillen Brittian O'Neal born about 1765-70 in Greenville, So. Carolina. He was listed on the 1790 Census as Brit Neal. He married a Hannah Sherrill about 1788-89 and they had 6 sons. James (b-1790), Phillip Sherrill (b-1795), Andrew (b-July 1799), Zachariah (b-1800 & my g-g-grandfather), Albert (b-1805) and Bird Britton/Brittian (b-1811). They left So Carolina before 1830 and moved to Habersham County, Ga and then went north to Dade County Ga.
Now there was also a John Britton O'Neal born about 1782 in Greenville, So Carolina which I believe to be a brother or a cousin or nephew to my Baillen Brittian. Jhn married a lady by the name of Ann Easterling from North Carolina. John also left the area about the same time and moved into Habersham County and then went South to Twiggs, alot of his descendents went to Florida. I am researching 'my' Charles Neal of Newberry CO, SC. He marr to Jemima Davenport 1793. Jemima's sister was Amy. Amy Davenport marr to 'a' John Kelly (all proven per record). I am just now starting to look at my earlier Neals in SC, and these two records (pasted above) just caught my attention (among others). Have no idea if this is my Charles, but the combination of names of interest to me.

'My' Charles (assume Jr) b. abt 1772 seems to be connected to Charles Neal Sr and a Jonathan Neal (also of Newberry). My Charles Neal removed to Giles CO TN.
