Searching for parents of John Cooper born abt. 1802 SC and died Nov. 1872, Greenville County, SC. John's wife was Mahala Unknown. They had 14 children.
The family is found on the 1850 census, Greenville, Gantt; 1860 census, Greenville, Berea; 1870 Greenville, Gantt.

Children include:
1. James B. born 1833
2. Eliza Jane born May 30, 1834 (my ancestor, married George Washington Smith)
3. Noah born 1837
4. Lucinda born 1838
5. Sarah Elizabeth born 1840
6. Mahala born 1842 (never married)
7. Nancy born 1842
8. John W. born 1844 (moved to Coryell County,Texas)
9. William T. born 1845
10.Mary Ann born 1847
11.Aaron born 1850
12.Richard born 1850
13.Edward born 1853 (moved to Dallas County, Texas)
14.Lavinia born 1865

There was a James Cooper living close to this family in 1860. I think he is most likely a brother.

Any connections?

I have a James Wayman Cooper b.1918 who married Frances Newman, also b. 1918. They lived in the Ft.Worth/Dallas,TX area. I have just started working on this family line and the cousin who contacted me from Tx. doesn't know much either. Maybe if you have the children of any of the family you mentioned, my James is one of their children? If you find out any more let me know. Frances lived in Greenville, so I am sure they must have met in Greenville,SC.

I remember from my youth days (1940s), my Burdette family would visit "Cousin Oscar Cooper's Family". I am trying to discover what my relationship to them might be. Cousin Oscar had two children, Thomas and Eliza Mae.Any body know these people?

It must be more than a coincidence that "Cousins Oscar and Alice Cooper" had a son named Thomas, and a daughter named Eliza Mae?

Hello Franklin,
I cannot find an "Oscar". Maybe that was another names for some of these Coopers.
I see with interest that you lived in Simpsonville.
I know for a fact that some of the Coopers moved to the "Five Forks" area of Greenville County. I have been there and found that Coopers owned 100s if not 1000s of acres in the early 1800s in that area. There is a road named Cooper Road not far from Gilder's Creek and Enoree River. My ancestors, George W. Smith and Eliza Jane Cooper bought and sold land in that area in the 1870's and 1880's.

There must be a connection.

I talked with a Cooper descendant who lives in the area. She told me where the old "home place" was located. I went there and it has been torn down. Only the chimney left standing.

It is said that my Grandmother, Eliza Jane Cooper, who died in 1906 was buried in the Cooper Family Cemetery. Can't find it.

Now, the James I mentioned is living next door to my John Cooper.
He was born in 1812 and married a Martha Unknown. They had the following children:
James C. Cooper 1838
John T. Cooper 1841
M. William Cooper 1843
Lucinda J. Cooper 1845
Nancy C. Cooper 1839
Elizabeth Cooper 1848
Harriet Cooper 1853
Reuben Cooper 1855
Eliza Cooper 1858
Van Buren Cooper 1859

I also found a will for a Thomas Cooper:

WILL OF THOMAS Cooper
Wife Elizabeth to have estate her lifetime then divided among my three children: John Cooper, James Cooper and Johannah Perry. To William Rea, the son of my wife, Elizabeth, after her death a feather bed and furniture. Executors: John and James. Dated 2 April, 1821.
Wit.: John Edmondson (signed) Thomas (x) Cooper

William Singleton
Proven 2 July 1821.

This family connection is only a guess. In 1850 John Cooper and a James Cooper lived next door to each other in Greenville. It is my guess that John and James were brothers. Found the above abstract in the Pendleton District, SC.

That's about what I have on these Coopers.

Take care,

A. Deason Smith in SC

To Steve Sloan- Probably not my relative. Cousin Oscar and his wife, Alice had a farm near Rocky Creek Baptist Church. They probably stayed there until they died.

Thanks a bunch! I've been looking for this information for a long time.

Do you know if Alice was the daughter of Martin Gamewell Burdette, or was she a step-daughter?
