I believe my G-Grandfather, Melgia Ward, b. 1820, was born in Edgefield, but need to locate parents/family. Parents may have been named James and Elizabeth Ward, but that is a guess. Melgia may have had a brother named Andrew Jackson Ward. Melgia and Andrew are found in Bibb County, Georgia, by 1840. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

McCarty/Blairs in GA 1700-1850

I am a direct descendant of Ann Blair, daughter of Hugh Blair Jr. and Mary (Polly) Lee aand granddaughter of Hugh Blair Sr and Jemimah McCarty.

Jemimah was the daughter of Daniel McCarty of Lincoln County (formally Tryon) and Granville Counties, NC. He had a brother Cornelius who owned land near Daniel in NC, SC. Daniel married Agness (???). Among their children was my 5th great grandmother Jemimah. Their family owned property in Granville County and Lincoln County(formerly Tryon) In NC. Land was sold between Daniel and a Johnston whose son Samuel eventually married Daniel’s daughter Olley (Olive)

Evidently Daniel’s brother Cornelius left for South Carolina before Daniel did because he transferred some land to Daniel and Hugh Blair. Blair married Daniel’s daughter Jemimah and moved to SC and eventually GA with Daniel . His sons Daniel Jr. John & Jacob moved also as did most of his daughters.

There was a Cornelius recorded in Lincoln County NC as head of a household of 3 males of 16 years or older, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. Since we know Daniel and his older brother Cornelius was in SC or GA by that time. I wonder if this might be the father of the two brothers. I do not know anything about his wife and children. I believe the Cornelius from Mecklenburg (formerly Tryon) County NC who married Jemima Bell and move eventually to KY and Ohio are members of the McCarthy family from Stafford County VA. I do not believe that he was because his marriage date was in the 1820’s. and he went west while my McCarty’s migrated southwards.
I believe Cornelius, the eldest son of Daniel who was the heir in law of Cornelius’ of SC estate and married in GA. I still haven’t worked that out yet.

One fact I have discovered is that there were two families (one was named Goforth)involved with the McCarty’s in Tryon and/or Granville County who can be connected in Bucks County PA with a Cornelius McCarty. I’m not sure about this but perhaps it is worth investigating.

I am hopeful that someone may have some data that might open a few doors to my McCarty/Blair Family.

Thanks.

Phil Strause
Would like any info on Reverend Henry King and his wife Mary. I found a copy of a will of Henry King leaving his slaves to his wife, Mary, or to his daughter Eleanor King Raney, wife of Peter Raney of Bedford County TN. It was dated 17 Oct 1821 Edgefield SC. I believe this Peter Raney may have been a ggggrandfather of mine. A Peter Raney was living in Bedford Co. in 1850, stating he was born in SC.abt. 1787. Rev. King may be another connection.
Thanks.

Hi Y'all. Thank you, Sandra for taking the time to post Thomas' will. I'm trying to connect my Great Great Grandfather (GGF), Thomas Michael Peterson (born 1835 somewhere in GA) with his parents, grandparents, etc. I have found that a son of Thomas and Abigail (also named Thomas), born in Edgefield, SC, 1 Mar 1784, married Susannah Shaddock on 3 Nov 1817 in Jasper County, GA. There was another family of Petersons in Telfair County GA (John and James) about 1820. James had a son, George Washington Peterson, who my Grandfather James Peterson called "Uncle Wash", but I can't connect them to Thomas Michael Peterson other than that "Uncle Wash" came to the same area in Volusia County, Fl, to live after the civil war. Any help you can provide is appreciated,
John Jerico 352-316-0653

Information I have on Joseph is that he was in Rev War at battle of Cowpens and was injured. I need his wife's name to separate the many Josephs located in this area at the time. I'm guessing he had to have been born between 1755 and 1765 to have been in that battle and that he died before 1850 census. I have several possible wives for the many Josephs, i.e. Jane Wilcox, Edith Nations,Goolspring Unknown.

West Creek, of course, is east of Clouds Creek. Because of the Clouds Creek massacre, I have studied land grants on West Creek and its tributary Lick Branch among other places on the east side of Clouds Creek. I am familiar with most of the names you mentioned. The book will not emphasize this area, however.

I know Bill Shumpert and have his revised map, dated 15 Jan 2001, which is probably one published before the new one you mention. It covers the area around Batesburg-Leesville and Ridge Spring, mostly southeast of Clouds Creek. He does great work.

Maps of many of the plats I have located will be in the book on Mount Willing. It should be available later this year.

Melanie, there is no map except the one I am making. I also want to make it clear that I am no Salter expert. I have been working on a book on Mount Willing, the old community centered on Richland Creek. In addition to the two-volume book on the history of the community and its citizens, there will be a separate book on land transactions in the area -- over 200 pages of abstracts from plats, grants, memorials, deeds, bonds, mortgages, and equity records. I have annotated most of these abstracts to tell where the property is located, how the owner got it, and to whom he sold it. Sometimes I tell who is related to whom.

I have geographically located many of the original land grants and have overlaid the plats on scaled maps of the area. In doing this, I have become familiar with the waterways and old roads of the area, and recognize many of the names of old Mount Willing citizens. The Salters did appear in records shortly after the Revolution ended.

I do not cover the Mine Creek and Dry Creek area as thoroughly as I do Richland Creek (perhaps this is a future project), but there are some tracts on branches on the east side of Dry Creek. In general the area of interest is from the Little Saluda River just east of the town of Saluda to its junction with the Saluda River and south and southeast of the Little Saluda to Clouds Creek, which joins the Little Saluda just before the Big Saluda. This includes Cane Brake Branch, Richland Creek, Davis's Branch, Cedar Creek, Dailey Creek, Beaverdam Creek, Crooked Creek, Jacobs Branch, Cow Branch, and many other small but named branches.

For more information you can e-mail me directly: candrews at mindspring. This is a dot com address.

David, are you aware that Dry Creek and Richland Creek are just a ridge apart in some places - less than a mile? James Salter of Dry Creek, the one who purchased William Herrin's tracts on Lucas/Lucys Branch adjoined Jacob Smith's 500-acre grant on drains of Dry Creek on the west side. On the northeast side, this same Smith tract adjoined John Salter's land on Richland Creek.

They raised their children in Washington County Alabama. I can find information on the family after the move to Alabama but cannot connect to any Conerly, Connerly, Conley family from the Carolinas to determine the parents and siblings of this person.
The following is from The Memorial and Biographical History of Johnson and Hill Counties of Texas (1892). Note that the dates are questionable. However, I am looking for any information on this family group. I have been unable to locate them in Crawford county Georgia.

John L. B. Williams, a prosperous farmer of Johnson county, is a son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Goodin) Williams. The father was born in Edgefield district South Carolina, in 1845 (sic), was a farmer by occupation, and was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. The parents were married about 1765 (sic), and had five children, viz.: Bertha, deceased; William, deceased; Delila, deceased, was the wife of James Visage, of Crawford county, Georgia; Mary A., deceased, was the wife of Jacob Visage, of the same county; and John L. B., the subject of this sketch.

The latter was born in Crawford county, Georgia, November 4,1837, and remained with his parents until after the war, when he came to Johnson county, Texas...In 1861 Mr. Williams, enlisted in the Sixth Georgia Infantry, Company C, under Colonel Cleveland, and served until the close of the war...

Mr. Williams was married in 1868 to Mattie Robinson, a native of Crawford county and they had three children: Albert, of Johnson county; Elbert, deceased; Nettie, at home. The wife and mother died in 1872, and in 1873 Mr. Williams married Missouri Whittsip (sic, probably Whitsit), and they have had seven children, namely: Eliza, at home; Eldred, John, Luella, Ora, Samuel and W. Poindexter.

I was not aware of that but it is very interesting. I am trying to put togaether several of the plats and will be going back to Edgefield in the near future to work on that.

Thanks so much and any additional information you may have on any possible connections between Salter of Richland and Dry Creek with other families over there would be greatly appreaciated. I feel certain that there is probably a family in Edgefield or Saluda County that has early information to help me identify Salter family members and there relationships before 1800.

David Salter

My family was on the West Creek waters of Clouds Creek off the Little Saluda. We've been to their land. Their early neighbors were John Thomas Fairchild, Allen, Busby, Day, Hartley & Pines. Later neighbors were Norris, DeShazo, Sawyer, Carter and others.

My desire is to connect my direct-line ancestor (
Shadrack Ward) to the other WARDs near there--Abdon & James Ward. Abdon's daughter married John Salter of Dry Creek/Mine Creek area.

any (any) clues greatly appreciated. the map you have ... is it for sale or is it one you're using for your research? i've been working with Bill Shumpert, a local mapmaker for that area. his maps are very helpful if you ever get a chance to look at one. he has a new one and i should be receiving it anyday.
