Surnames: Holloway, Westfield
Hello list,
Next week I am traveling to Darlington County from NYC and I was wondering if anyone can help point me in the right direction as far as genealogical research is concerned. I plan to spend some time at Hartsville Genealogical Research Library but I have enough time to visit other places. Any suggestions?
I am specifically researching the Holloway surname.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely, Kathy

Kathy,
In addition to going to Hartsville, you may want to go over to Darlington and visit this place:

Darlington Historical Commission
Doris Gandy, Historian
104 Hewitt Street
Darlington, South Carolina 29532
Phone: (843) 398-4710

Alot of good info. there and nice people too! You may want to call ahead for hours of operation?

Happy Hunting,
Jeff Hawkins

Thank you very much Jeff, I do appreciate it : )

FYI - the Darlington Historical Commission is open M-F, 9 to 5.

Now all I have to do is pray for some warm, sunny weather : )

Thanks again!
Sincerely, Kathy

Hi, Kathy! Another place you may want to check out is the Archive Building in Camden. It's about 40 minutes from Darlington, but they have a wealth of information. If you choose to go, the best way is to take I-20 to the Camden exit - 98, and go straight through town - it's about 3-4 miles and will be on your right, just pass the library. It might be 5 or 6 stop lights. Good luck.

Anytime. You may even want to try the Darlington and Lee County courthouses. Since part of Lee County is made up of Darlington County, they may have records there as well. I haven't done any research since before 9/11 in Lee County, so I'm not sure of their protocol now, but they used to let you scroll through their marriage record books so you could locate the actual marriage licenses and copy them (it used to be a quarter a copy). Good luck!

Hi Linda,
Initially I thought that my Holloway's were from the Darlington County area but after going there and doing research, I'm not so sure. Mine could be related to them but I don't think they ever lived there. No land records or mention of them in any Wills. According to the 1850 census, my ggg-grandmother, Irena Holloway Gary, says she was born in S.C. By the 1820 census my Holloway's are living in Indiana.
Last year I was able to find a living male Holloway from my line who was willing to take a DNA test and we do have a few matches with some N.C. Holloway's.
Sorry I couldn't help you more with yours.
Sincerely, Kathy
