My Charles "Henry" Bryant was b abt 1887 - 1889 in SC. I believe I found his draft card, if it is his he was born sept 1887 in Darlington SC. He stated that he wished excemption on June 5, 1917 since he had a wife and child under 2 yrs old. His trade was farming near Bamberg and lived in Bamberg SC.

He died May 19, 1954 at St. John's Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. He was seperated from his wife that was living in Lancaster PA, she filled out his death certificate and stated she didn't know who his parents were. She brought his body to Lancaster PA for burial. They had 9 children and maybe more, the family believes some were put up for adoption.


His family did put an obit in the Lancaster Paper:

Charles H. Bryant, sixty-six, of Pittsburgh, died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. John's Hospital, Pittsburgh.

A son of the late Mr & Mrs Samuel Bryant, he was a native of South Carolina and a retired coal miner.

He is survived by his wife: the former Margaret Jane Spence, Columbia; two sons: Samuel E. and Charles H., Marietta; four daughters: Margaret, wife of Chester Arter; Eleanor, wife of George Detwiler; Mary Jane, wife of William Aston; Edna N., wife of Robert Gainer; all of Columbia; 23 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Above it listed his father as Samuel Bryant. I found him (I believe) in the 1910 Census:

Per family folklore he shot or killed a man and went to PA to live. There is a gap of 6 years between their first child and second child. Was he in prison? Hiding?
