I am looking for any descendents of Samuel Padgett and Elizabeth Goodwin. My great-grandmother, Maude Amelia Wiggins, is the daughter of Elizabeth Padgett, who married Paul Wiggins. Elizabeth was the daughter of Isham Padgett. Isham Padgett was the son of Samuel Padgett and Elizabeth Goodwin. I understand that Isham is the brother of Joel "Wildcat" Padgett and James Job Padgett. Any info. on the family would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will be any help but this is the information I have. I do not know Samuel "Teacher Sam" Padgett's parents but I know he was born in 1770 in England. His wife Elizabeth Goodwin was born in 1771, also in England, and her father's name was James Goodwin ( I do no know her mother's name.) James Goodwin was born in 1720 in England. Samuel Padgett and Elizabeth Goodwin had a total of 4 children: Isham Padgett, Joel "Wildcat" Padgett, Katy Padgett, and James Graham "Humpie Jim" Padgett. My family stems off from Joel "Wildcat" Padgett who married Nancy Jane Bennett. They had two children Daniel Padgett and Hansford Duncan Padgett Sr. Hansford Duncan Padgett Sr. is my GGGrandfather he married Martha "Isabella" Goodwin and they had 4 children: Hansford Duncan Padgett Jr., James Graham Padgett Col., Sheldonia Padgett, and Sennie Elizabeth Padgett. Hansford Duncan Padgett Jr. is my GGrandfather, he married Bianca Price in 1893 and I know they had more than two children but I only have two of their children's names: Hansford Duncan "Dunc" Padgett III and Clyde Percy Padgett, Clyde is my Greatgrandfather.

I have more information relating to different branches, Goodwin, Price, Rast, Carter (which I have traced back to 1475), Beach,. If you know Nancy Jane Bennett's or Samuel Padgett's parents it would be a big help.

i just saw Nancy Jane Bennett's parents listed as Samuel Bennett and Sallie Erhardt on "Minorcan Family Names"
Some of the SC folks went to FL and married into old families there. This was the first time I have seen a reference to her parents any where on the www. We must be cousins. See my surnames.

Thank you for the names of Nancy Jane Bennett's parents. I saw that you also had Goodwin and Carter surnames, so we must have some of the same ancestors. On your Carter side Do you have Seany"Sennie" Carter(b. Feb. 14, 1804), daughter of John "Jack" Carter Jr. (b in 1765 NC). I'm looking for more information on Seany Carter's 4th ggrandparents Thomas Carter I and Eleanor Tooke

Intresting. My understanding is that "Teacher" Sam Padgett came into Colleton County around 1790ish from either the Penn or from NC/Md area.

In any event, HD Jr and Bianca Price Padgett had 4 boys before HD dies in the early 1900s (oldest to youngest):
Vernon L. Padgett (my granddad; one son Guy Sr)
Price (married Caroline? of Newberry; one daughter Nancy)
Clyde (his only son Bootsy was killed in Korea, two daughters, Virginia I think was one)
HD III (Uncle Dunc who married the Ena Black, no children)

Hanson Duncan Jr.'s son Clyde actually had 4 children. Clyde is my Greatgrandfather, he married Ella Mae Rast. One of the boys died as a baby or infant, the other son was Clyde Percy Padgett Jr. and he did die in Korea. Clyde's two daughters were Elizabeth, my great aunt, and Virginia, my grandmother. And then Hanson Duncan III married Ena Carolyn Beach, not Black. We have inherited a wedding gift of Bianca Price and also some of Ena's furniture after she passed away. Well let me know if you have any more info. That means we're related somehow, although I have a harder time figuring out cousins and so forth. What is your name again? My grandmother Virginia may know you.

Oh, I dont know if you know anything about The Carter's on our side, but HDP Jr.'s maternal grandmother was Seany "Sennie" Carter. Seany's 4th greatgrandfather was Thomas Carter Sr. who married a women named Eleanor. I am having trouble figuring out if if her last name was Cooke or Tooke. Let me know if you know anything.

Kristen, Dr. Dunc Padgett's first name was Hansford. The name "Hansford Duncan" seems to have started in upper Colleton Co., SC, in the early 1800s. Several babies were named for a Scottsman of that name who settled there in the early 1800s.

Thanks for the info on the Scottsman, I was wondering why there were so many Hansford Duncan's. Do you by chance know the Scottsman's last name? I did know it was spelled Hansford, but every once in a while I misspell names, esp. uncommon ones that you dont' hear everyday. Are you in any relation To Hansford Duncan Padgett or any of the Padgetts?

As far as I know, Duncan was the last name. Seems like he was a Baptist preacher? Ena Beach, who married Dr. Dunk Padgett, was a cousin of mine.

Oh okay. Well I'll look up Hansford Duncan to see if I can find anything. Did you by chance know my grandmother Virginia or her sister Elizabeth? They were Dunc's nieces, daughters of Clyde-who was Dunc's brother. I have been to Ena's house before, which was originally Bianca Price Padgett's house. We just visited Walterboro abt. a month ago and I took some pictures of it.

The SC Dept of Archieves Digital Data Colletion has at least two plats with Hansford Duncan's name on them.

http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/search/details.asp?index=385...

http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/search/details.asp?index=449...

Both plats were in Barnwell District. The Mills Atlas of 1825 shows an H. D. Duncan living in the Clear Pond section of Barnwell District which is now in Bamberg County. Clear Pond is near Smoaks in Upper Colleton County.

Besides Hansford Duncan Padgett there was also Hansford Duncan Carter

I don't mean to suggest that Hansford Darling Duncan was related to the various Padgetts, Carters, Stricklands, etc, that used the name later. These families probably admired Rev. Duncan, and named offspring for him?

Clear Pond is about 1/2 way between Ehrhardt and Bamberg in Bamberg Co., SC. I think Andrew Jackson Academy is located near there.

As for Clyde Padgett's daughters, I didn't know them. Can you identify which daughter married Capers, and which married Rollins? Thanks.

It appears a lot of families that lived in Colleton District and Barnwell Dsitrict (the part that is now Bamberg County) named a male child after Hansford Duncan.

This may help in answering which of Clyde Padgett's daughters married a Capers and which married a Rollins. Found the dates on the web site Larry Ulmer put together from information in "The Press and Standard." Would need to read the actla articles for confirmation.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pressandstandard/

Capers, Alexander James was married on 13 Sept. 1941. Martha Elizabeth Padgett was married on 13 Sept. 1941.

Rollins, Lewis W. was married on 18 Oct. 1950. Virginia Padgett was married on 18 Oct. 1950.

The 1930 Federal Census indicates Clyde Padgett had two daughters, Elizabeth aged 9, and a daughter aged 8 whose name is difficult to read but a portion of her first name may have had Viriginia in it.

I am kin to a lot of the Padgetts but don't know if Clyde Padgett and his daughters are among my cousins.

Joseph R. Williams, my grandfather's brother, married Nacy I. Padgett - don't know who Nancy's parents were Joe's sister, Annie Marion Williams, married Dan Padgett, Jr. Joe and Dan pased away in St. Augustine, Florida. Their remains were returned to South Carolina and buried in the Joseph Koger Risher Cemetery in Williams, SC. Nancy and Annie also passed away in St. Augistine and were buried in the Evergreen Cemetery there,.

Elizabeth Elmira Balck, one of my grandmother's sisters married Joe Padgett.

My grandmother, Josephine Adela "Della" Black Williams was a granddaughter of Sheriff Robert Black. Two of Sheriff Balck's sisters, Martha and Jane, married men named Joel Padgett

Oh, I know the Padgett's and Carter's weren't related but rather named after Hansford Duncan. There were actually two different Hansford Duncan Padgett's born about the same time that were related. I think they were cousins, I would have to look it up, but the one born Nov. 9, 1839 to Joel Padgett and Nancy Jane Bennett are my ancestors.
Clyde had two daughters: Martha Elizabeth Padgett Capers and Virginia Padgett Rollins. The oldest dau. doesn't go by Martha but by Elizabeth.

Every now and then I try to figure out who Nancy I. Padgett William's parents were. At one time thoguht Dan Padgett Jr might be her brother but apparently he wasn't.

The 1880 census shows Nancy already married to Joseph R. Williams and they had three daughters. They werer living in Warren Township, Colleton County at the time. Dan Padgett, Sr and Jr. were also in the same township in 1880.

The 1870 census shows Dan Padgett, Sr's household in Scott Township, Colleton County. Nancy I. Padgett would have still been single then and she was not shown as a member of Dan's household. So far the only Nancy Padgetts I have come across in 1870 were either older or younger.

Did read Dan Padgett, Jr's obituary in an 1906 edition of "The Press and Standard." Rather lenghty but primarily sentimental, few names mentioned.

Dan Jr's widow passed away in May 1942 and her obituary was in the 28 May 1942 edition of "The Press and Standard."

Alex Smyly passed away in St. Augustine, Flordia the same month. Alex was married to Kate Williams. His obituary appeared just above that of Mrs. Annie Padgett, Dan, Jr's widow. The obituary indicates that Annie was the sister of Alex Smyly, "... who died in the same town on on May 22."

Actually Annie was Alex's sister-in-law. Annie's maiden name was Annie Marion Williams. Kate Williams Smyly, Alex's widow was Annie's sister.

Annie Williams Padgett was survived by two daughters: Mrs. Adella Westmore of Miami, Flordia. and Mrs. Walter Foey of St. Augustine. Also, one grandson, Walter Foey, Jr of St. Augustine.

Mentioned that two of Sheirff Robert Black's sisters were married to Padgetts. His brother Ricahrd Black was married to Sarah Padgett.

Sheriff Black was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Caldwell. One of their daughters, Nancy Black married Dr. Brant Padgett. (Sheriif Black's second wife was Jane Elizabeth Smith.)

How sure of this are you? I have that Isabella Goodwin married Dolman Graham who died in 1791. Our Isabella was born in 1773, how about yours?

There are two different Isabella Padgett's. They are both related though. The one I was referring to was Martha "Isabella" Goodwin (b. 3-1-1842 d. 9-4-1888) daughter of James Goodwin and Seany "Sennie" Carter. Martha "Isabella" Goodwin was related to Isabella Goodwin through her father. James Goodwin was the son of Isham and Margarete "Mary" Goodwin. He was named after his grandfather James Goodwin (b. 1720 in England). Margarete "Mary" Goodwin was the sister of Elizabeth Goodwin (b. 1771 in England) and Isabella Goodwin (b. 1773 and married to Dolman Graham). Isabella Goodwin was the aunt of James Goodwin and the great aunt of Martha "Isabella" Goodwin. So yes, you are correct that Isabella Goodwin was born in 1773 to Dolman Graham, but the one I was referring to was Martha "Isabella" Goodwin, Isabella's great niece.
