Evelyn and Gibson Bryan's book "Cemeteries of Upper Colleton Countynty South Carolina" pages 413 through 418 has a brief history of the Smoak family. Apparently the Smoaks were Germam-Swiss, spellings of the name include Rauch, Rouck, Smoke, and Smoak. According to the Bryan's the first of the Smoak line was Johann Georg Rauch who arrived in America in 1740. Andrew Rouck who became Andrew Smoke was the first of the Colleton County line.

It is indicated David Smok, 1785 to 1852/53 married 4 times and had 19 children one of whom was David Smoak,Jr.

"Cemeteries of Upper Colleton County" is available in reprint People have been able to borrow a copy via interlibrary loan.

Using the Bryan's book "Cemeteries of Upper Colleton County" as a reference

Andreas Rouck took the name Andrew Smoke he was a Revolutionary War Veteran[1755 to 15 Aug 1835] Andrew started the Colleton County, SC line.
Married Cathrine Stronham on 3 Nov. 1782
Cathrine Stronham lived 17 June 1760 to early 1784
Only child shown is William Smoke, Sr. [17 Feb 1784 to 2 Oct 1882]
William Smoak, Sr. married Elizabeth Griffith[10 Jan 1785 to
27 april 1871]

Andrew Smoke's second wife was known as the Widow Stronham.
She had been married to the brother of Andrew's first wife
Andrew would marry twice more: a Miss Gilbert and then a Miss Rice

Another of Andrew's sons was David Smoke[1785 to 1852/1853]
Like his father David married 4 times and had 19 children. the Bryans only name 3:
David Smoak, Jr.
Andrew Washinton Smoak
Betsy Smoke

The Bryan's book includes the graves of many Smoaks. From looking at the information show from tombstones, one can get a general idea of who was married to wh.

Dear Tom:
Upon reading your message listing Clarkie Rice Risher, I would like to ask you if you have any genealogical informtion regarding her name. I am trying to identify the maiden name of my great, great, great-grandmother, Clarkie Rice Cotton-Smith-Davis who was born in the Old Barnwell District, S. C. in 1811 and had a sister, Ann Ellen who also was born there. Since I cannot locate official documents out of Barnwell, S. C. I am trying to identify her parentage through secondary documents. The name of Clarkie Rice is handed down through many generations of my family, and it is an unusual name. That is why I would like to ask you about Clarkie Rice Risher's background. Also, Colleton County, S. C. is within the geographical area of the Old Barnwell District. Thank you very much for your help. Another person may be another sister of Clarkie and Ann Ellen and her married name was Selina M. Blount. They lived in Savannah for many years. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Carole Melson

Carole,

I wish I could help you. Unfortunately all I have on Clarkie Rice Risher is that she was one of the wives of David William Smoak Sr. and that she and David Smoak were the parents of at least one child Julia Ann (Julie) Smoak who married Henry Crosby. All this took place in Colleton Co., SC.

Clarkie did appear on the 1850 Census for Colleton County and is shown as being age 25.

Will keep your names in mind as I 'roam' over South Carolina materials.

You show Smith in your persos name. Do you have anything on a David Lawrence or William 'Yorkie' Smith, both residents of Colleton, not certain where they were born?

Thanks

Tom
