There's a Sumter Deas in the 1880 Census, Kershaw County, Dekalb Township, P. 42. He was born 1853 and has a daughter Affy.

Hi Helen Hutchinson, that you for the information about Edisto Island on the Deas. My grandfather from the 1930 census was living in the 11th ward of Charleston S.C. I don't no wether that was called Edisto Island. His nephew Taylor Stephney was a border with him in 1930. Sumpter Deas died in 1934 he was buried in Sumter S.C. I was told he might had another family their. I really don't no wether he was origanlly from Charleston, but he left his family in Sumter S.C. and moved to Charleston. His daughter Hassie Deas Bradford had his body sent back to Sumter S.C. where he was buried. I believe someone in Charleston might have herd of him or his nephew Taylor Stephney. We are having a family reunion of the Deas family in 2005. If you get in information on some knowing them. Please e-mail me. His children names were Alffay, Annie, Solomon, Gary, Sally, Hassie who is my grandmother, and son Richard which they called him Scip. I hope your mother inlaw or father in-law will remember hearing of them.

Hi Lorraine,

No, the 11th ward of Charleston is not considered Edisto Island. Edisto Island is about forty minuets south of Charleston.

Thank you.

Hi Lorraine,
DEAS, BRADFORD and GREEN are all somehow connected to my
WHILDEN/WEEDEN/WHELDON/WHEEDEN et al ancestors.
AFFY is too, but I am having no success connecting any family members, nor does anyone claim kinship.
I believe that the Black WHILDENS (slaves) of Christ Church,
SC were the original family members who took on many different spellings (26) of the surname.
Can you be of any help?
Most sincerely,
carol.

His death certificate lists his spouse as "Mahaley Deas" and his parents as Lucius Deas and Parey. The informant was Richard Deas
