Your post is very interesting. Finally found the Birchmore connection to my great-great uncle's family was through his wife, so not connected to me after all. A great-great-great grandaunt married William J. Joyner so that connection is also only by marriage.

The Chavis/Shivers & Johnson folks mainly lived around Cameron, Elloree, & Creston prior to 1880. All of these people are related.

Look up Civil War veteran Matthew Whitfield SPEARMAN's wife (married 7 Sept 1870) JULIA LAVINIA GEIGER born 24 March 1849 in Cuthbert, Randolph, Georgia. They lived in Shady Dale, Jasper, GA.
The first Giessendanner in the Orangeburg Area was Hans Ulrich Giessendanner, the elder, who came to Orangeburg to be a preacher to the German/Swiss settlers in that area.

In general, all Giessendanners from Orangeburg can be traced back to Hans Ulrich or slaves belonging to later generations of Giessendanners.

Hans Ulrich Giessendanner kept a record book of his church, and that record book was continued by his nephew, also Hans Ulrich who took over the church when the elder Giessendanner died. That record book contains much information about the early families of Orangeburg District.
-----
That book of record has been translated, transcribed and expanded on by a gentleman in the Netherlands, Joop Giessendanner. He has a web site that may be of help tracing the Giessendanner family (which Joop also has on the web on a related site.)
-----
Joop's site for the Book of Record is:
http://sail.home.xs4all.nl/orange/a-index.html
-----
Joop's Giessendanner family site is:
http://sail.home.xs4all.nl/index.html
-----
The other sources for information in Orangeburg County and Calhoun County, South Carolina would be:
-----
Orangeburg County Historical Society
1421 Middleton St
PO Box 1881
Orangeburg, SC 29116-1881
(803) 535-0022 - ochs@orangeburgh.org
-----
Calhoun County Museum and Cultural Center
313 Butler Street
St. Matthews, SC 29135
(803) 874-3964 - calhounmuseum@windstream.net

If anyone knows of the 'Old Meeting House', I am still interested. I have found this marker on the Internet but it did not say exactly where the marker was. If I knew, the Meeting house would simply be three miles North of the marker. I am interested as my ancestor, Jacob Schneider helped begin it. I would believe that he was buried there as well.

This little meeting house is recorded in the SC Deed Book M-3, p. 118, 24 May 1751. Gift in Trust. William Baker, planter, of Saxegotha Township, Berkeley Co., for good & pious considerations, conveys to Christian Rhetetsperger, William Baker, John Plowman, & Jacob Schneider, elders of the German Congregation of the Dissenting Protestants at the Congarees, & their successors, half an acre within the limits of said Township, part of 350 a. between lands belonging to Christian Rhetetsperger & Herman Geiger; said half a. bounding N on Santee River; other sides on the 350 a.; with the Meeting House built thereon; for the sole use of said German Protestants of the Helvetii [Swiss Reformed] or Walloone [Dutch Reformed] Confession as well as of that of Augsbourg [Lutheran] in common. Livery & seizing made. Witnesses: Philip (his mark) Pool, Peter (German script) Rott. Before Stephen Crell, J.P., on 7 June 1751. Recorded 24 Dec 1768 by Fenwicke Bull, Register.
There are also records under Stebler, Godlib. As near as I can determine, all of these records refer to Gottlieb Stabler (b 1731 in Germany, arrived SC 1752, d aft 1790 in SC). Most of the Stablers in SC and many in Alabama and Mississippi are his descendants. As noted in the SC Archive records, Gottlieb owned several pieces of land during his life.

That is the information I was seeking. I was looking for the parents of Margaret Caldwell who married West Donald in Abbeville Co. about 1820, and wondered if there was a connection to John C. Calhoun's mother's family. Knowing the grandfather will give me a starting place to look. Thanks.
They had many children and it's believed that their children were born in Calhoun in the Lyons township from 1870-1880's. Two of their sons Charles (1879-1953) and Thomas(1884-1941) both lived in Calhoun before they passed. If anyone have any connections to the Chavis family (especially non-white Chavis from Calhoun), please email me because I would like to know more about this family.

His wife (1st one) Sarah weaver had 5 kids with him one of which
was a great grandfather of mine. If you want more info on the Quattlebaum family buy the book by Marcus Manning Quattlebaum. It is printed by Higgingson Publishing. I warn you though there are maNY mistakes made byu the author. It is however a great base to start with

I am still very new to this, so I was excited to see your messages. I haven't had much history about the Quattlebaum family, and I was unaware that they owned slaves. It sounds like you have a very interesting history!

I myself am related to the Quattlebaums from my maternal grandmother. Her mom (my great grandma) was Susie Mae Quattlebaum, one of many children between William David Quattlebaum and Hattie Agnes White. The farthest back I have found is William's father, John William Quattlebaum from South Carolina.

My grandmother Imogene Lora Newton (Susie Mae's daughter) was very interested in her heritage and told me many stories about her childhood, research, extended family, Quattlebaum family reunions, etc. I am, like you, mixed with several different backgrounds. I have Danish, French-Canadian, Native American, and Syrian blood in addition to my Quattlebaum lineage.

The census information doesn't give race in 1850, 1860
Good Luck!
