McCarty/Blairs in GA 1700-1850

I am a direct descendant of Ann Blair, daughter of Hugh Blair Jr. and Mary (Polly) Lee aand granddaughter of Hugh Blair Sr and Jemimah McCarty.

Jemimah was the daughter of Daniel McCarty of Lincoln County (formally Tryon) and Granville Counties, NC. He had a brother Cornelius who owned land near Daniel in NC, SC. Daniel married Agness (???). Among their children was my 5th great grandmother Jemimah. Their family owned property in Granville County and Lincoln County(formerly Tryon) In NC. Land was sold between Daniel and a Johnston whose son Samuel eventually married Daniel’s daughter Olley (Olive)

Evidently Daniel’s brother Cornelius left for South Carolina before Daniel did because he transferred some land to Daniel and Hugh Blair. Blair married Daniel’s daughter Jemimah and moved to SC and eventually GA with Daniel . His sons Daniel Jr. John & Jacob moved also as did most of his daughters.

There was a Cornelius recorded in Lincoln County NC as head of a household of 3 males of 16 years or older, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. Since we know Daniel and his older brother Cornelius was in SC or GA by that time. I wonder if this might be the father of the two brothers. I do not know anything about his wife and children. I believe the Cornelius from Mecklenburg (formerly Tryon) County NC who married Jemima Bell and move eventually to KY and Ohio are members of the McCarthy family from Stafford County VA. I do not believe that he was because his marriage date was in the 1820’s. and he went west while my McCarty’s migrated southwards.
I believe Cornelius, the eldest son of Daniel who was the heir in law of Cornelius’ of SC estate and married in GA. I still haven’t worked that out yet.

One fact I have discovered is that there were two families (one was named Goforth)involved with the McCarty’s in Tryon and/or Granville County who can be connected in Bucks County PA with a Cornelius McCarty. I’m not sure about this but perhaps it is worth investigating.

I am hopeful that someone may have some data that might open a few doors to my McCarty/Blair Family.

Thanks.

Phil Strause
Thank you for your post re: Dopson/Lugg. Could you possibly share the info you have? I also show Isaac married to Mary Gould, but I show also an alternate spelling as Mary Good.

I have Dora's father as John Lugg. She had a brother, also named John. John Lugg Sr. is listed in the 1810 census. Unfortunately, that's all I have.

Again, thanks for your interest.

-- Kathleen

Dora Lugg and Charles Isaac Dopson are my 4th great grand-parents. I have some info. on Charles's father and grandfather (the two Josephs). I came across something with Isaac Dopson, b. 1720, who I assume would be Joseph I's father. I also have Isaac married to Mary Gould. Does anyone know if this information is correct or do you have more complete information?

Also, I can't seem to find anything further on Dora Lugg. Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Members of the American Civil War Round Table of Australia, and especially the early members, from the 1970's, are fully aware of the facts relating to Thomas Horton. HE DID NOT MIGRATE TO AUSTRALIA. It was his son, the late Walter, who came to Australia, and who had been an early member of the said Round Table. Walter's claims about his father's service have never been confirmed, and may or may not be true.
It would seem that there are those who would make assumption without knowing the facts, and who would prefer to spread such assumptions all over cyberspace, instead of taking the trouble to research further. Many of these assumptions and fabrications seem to emanate from one particular source, and shows the utter lack of any research capabilities.

The following comes from the book Kith and Kin, written by Kate McLemore in 1948 and published by The Paragon Press in Montgomery, Alabama.

Eliza B. Haskell was born on April 22, 1814 and died January 12, 1852, but the book does not specify where. It's very possible that some of the records on her might have been lost when the cities of Columbia and Orangeburg in South Carolina burned down during the Civil War. The book details very little about Haskell and Alfred Raoul, although it does include a letter written by Alfred in the aftermath of General William Tecumseh Sherman's burning of Columbia in 1865. Is Eliza Haskell related to Confederate Col. Alexander Cheves Haskell?

The father of Alfred Raoul was indeed Dr. John Louis Raoul, or in full, Jean Rose Marie Desire' Raoul de ChampManoir. Raoul de ChampManoir was born in 1783 in Dinan, France and was a marquis during Napoleon's reign. His family hailed from Burgundy. Dr. Raoul studied medicine under Napoleon's physician Phillippe Pinel and developed a close friendship with Napoleon's nephew, the Duc D'Enghein. Raoul penned a set of memoirs after the duke's assassination and Napoleon was so incensed by them that he imprisoned Raoul, but his life was spared by the intercession of his brother. However, he was exiled from the country in 1809 and boarded a vessel that eventually sunk off the Atlantic coast. He clung to the wreckage for 24 hours before being rescued by a schooner that brought him to Charleston. The day afterward he came to aid an elderly man who was thrown out of a carriage by his horses. Raoul set the man's leg in place and ended up being paid to continue attending upon the man, which enables him to start up his own practice in Charleston. He married the widow of John Paul Thompson, Caroline Eliza Theus in Belleville plantation, South Carolina sometime in 1812, probably during that summer. Raoul would die of typhoid fever on August 17, 1827.

Raoul and his wife Caroline had six children, including Alfred, who was the second to be born. Caroline was born in Charleston on January 1, 1786 and died in Columbia, S.C. on January 23, 1839. Both were buried in Columbia's Trinity Churchyard.

I hope that helps. Speaking of the Raouls, would you or anyone else happen to know of Sadie Cromlin Raoul is the granddaughter of Thomas Cooper Raoul, the son of Alfred's brother Frederic Sebastian Raoul?

Ian Beverly

Black "Pinckney Families" of South Carolina

I have been researching my family roots for more than seven (7) years. I have been trying desperately to find out information about my grandfather Elias Pinckney Sr. He was born in South Carolina in 1904. He had an older brother by the name of William Hezekiah Pinckney, born in 1899/1900. I also heard there may have been a couple sisters, Shirley and Ruth (not sure though). Both brothers moved to Philadelphia, PA during the late 1920’s. I would like to know who their parents were. There are so many Pinckney’s in South Carolina, you have to know at least one of the parents, in order to follow the correct Pinckney family line. I have been told that their mother’s name was “Wilhelmina” (Both brothers have a daughter with that name). I need this information the help complete my family tree. My family tree can be found on Ancestry.com: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=6534158

Information about my grandparents:
Elias Pinckney Sr. married my grandmother Essie Green, also from South Carolina. They had three children:
Wilhelmina Rebecca Pinckney – 192* (my mother) – Living in Philadelphia
Frances Eastermae Pinckney – 192* (my aunt) – Living in Philadelphia
Elias Pinckney Jr. – 1930 (my uncle) – Passed away in 1998 – San Francisco CA

This is what I know about my great uncle William:
William H Pinckney married a Julia, I don’t know her maiden name. They had three daughters ( I think)
Wilhelmina Pinckney - 1917 – Born SC
Helen Pinckney - 1926/27 – Philadelphia, PA
Elouise Pinckney - 1916 – Born SC

My mother told me that William and his family lived on Colorado Street in South Philadelphia. My grandmother “Essie” passed away in 1968, and I remember the names Julia and Wilhelmina Pinckney in the obituary book. I have Pinckney aunts, uncles, and cousins living throughout Philadelphia and South Carolina, but I know absolutely nothing about them. I remember a Pinckney cousin of mine from South Philadelphia was killed in action in Vietnam, (He looked exactly like my Uncle Elias Jr.) During the late 60’s to early 70’s a cousin whose was nickname Pookie use to visit us quite often. I heard she suffered from a stroke a few years ago.

If any of these names seems familiar to you, please contact me. My cousins from "Philadelphia, Pa", who maybe related to Uncle William & Aunt Julia, please contact me. I don't want anything, just a bit of our ancestral history. Hoping to hear from some distant cousin.

Sincerely,
Senora M Amos

My apologies.

The obit had Mrs. J. R. Horton. This would be James Robert Horton and not James Redden as I stated. I was thinking of too many other things in this line and incorrectly typed the wrong middle name.

Since Selena Hoff's mother was Mary Ann Gatch, it is "assumed" that A. M. was incorrect and should have read M. A. Hoff.

Hi
I have read your other posts and decided to post what I found here, you might want to copy it to the Davis Surname Message Board.
1930 Census for Georgia, McIntosh County, Jones Township

William Davis age 48, first married at age 19 b. GA/father GA/mother GA occ: Foreman Lumber yard
wife Pearlie A. age 22 first married at age 16 b. SC/father SC/ mother SC
son William J. age 5 b. SC/GA/SC
son Raymond age 3 yrs 5 months b. SC/GA/SC
son Cecil age 1 yr 10 months b. GA/GA/SC
brother-in-law Ruby Bradham age 20 b. SC/SC/SC occ: laborer Lumber yard
The next household is an Ellis Cooler age 25 with wife Jessie.
The household above William Davis is probably a younger brother.
Rufus L. Davis age 36 first married at age 30 b. GA/GA/GA occ: Laborer Lumber yard
wife Allie M. age 22 first married at age 18 b. SC/SC/SC

So it looks like your Will is Willam and his marriage to Pearl was his second. Looks like he first married abt 1901/02.

You can get their death certificates, have you contacted the cemetery where your father is buried to see if he had any Military Honors? If he did and even if he didn't,
contact the Jasper County Veterans Office, usually located in the County Court House, to see if he filed his DD214 (Discharge papers) with them to recieive the G.I. and Veterans Benefits due him from his service.

I'll do some further searching when I have some more time.

Good Luck
D.

Hello, I'm looking for anyone that may have come across any family history on Thomas and Mary Williams. They were my grandparents. They are Black but my grandfather's family was said to be creole of mixed ancestry, Black and White and maybe some Native. My grandmother's family were mixed also of Black and Native heritage. I have found them with my mother and her siblings in the 1930 census that I will copy here. Both Thomas and Mary were originally from Beaufort, South Carolina but moved to Savannah, Ga. I'm not sure if they married in Beaufort first or after they moved to Savannah, but all of their children were born in Savannah. Here is a copy of the 1930 census from Savannah, Ga. I posted this info on the Savannah, Ga. message board also. I've been on a on and off search for years and never get much results. I hope someone will see this who has some connection. Thank you.

1930 Census Savannah, Ga.

Household Members: Name Age
Thomas Williams 50
Mary Williams 35
Thomas Williams 12
Robert W Williams 9
Margeret Williams 6
Beatrice Williams 5
Ellen Williams 2
Mary Williams 7/12
I am looking for information on my Grandfather and his family in SC. The only information that I have is his name is Will Davis & is buried at Maye River Cemetery in Beaufort, County, SC. His son, William James Davis, Sr was my Father and his wife was Pearl A. Cooler (at death, she had re-married). If anyone has any suggestions on how I can find more information on him and our family, I would appreciate it. It seems without my fathers social or any specific dates or anything I can't get anywhere. I am only 27, my father was born in 1925 and passed away when I was 12, so I have no one left to question about our family history to give me any insight. Thanks so much!

Ms Amos: Good luck; pre-Civil War black genealogy is so difficult. I'm attempting to help an old up-state S.C., black Bellinger family, connect with the old Walterboro, S.C., black Bellinger branch.

Mr. Wildsmith: I descend South Carolina Surveyor-General, Capt. Edmund Bellinger, Sr., Landgrave (created 1698; of Tombodly and Ashepoo Baronies), who was the master of the ship "Blake" which brought the first cattle to S.C. Bellinger was in the service of Gov. Joseph Blake, Sr., Landgrave (created 1696)(of "Plainfield" Barony?).

Do you know the history of the ship "Blake"? Why was Bellinger in Blake's service? Is there a Blake-Bellinger familly connection? Where was the Blake family from?

I descend Edmund's son, Capt. Wm. Bellinger, Sr., who wed Mary Cantey (daughter of Wm. Cantey & Jane Baker), and had Elizabeth Bellinger, 2nd wife of the Hon. Henry Yonge, Sr., Loyalist, H.M. Surveyor-General of Georgia. In his Loyalist Claims, Henry called his first wife (who got his sequested estates) Christiana Bulloch (sister of Patriot Gov. Bulloch): a "rebel". Henry Sr. was the son of the Hon. Francis Yonge, Lords Proptietors Surveyor-General of the Bahamas, Carolinas, and Georgia.

Henry Sr's son, Capt. Philip Yonge, Loyalist, H.M. Surveyor-General of Georgia, wed Christian Mackenzie; the daughter of Capt. Wm. Mackenzie, H.M. Comptroller and Collector of Customs, Sunbury, Georgia. William's brother, was George, Third Earl Cromartie, of Cromarty, Scotland; who's daughter, Lady Mary; wed the "Signer" Middleton, of Middleton Plantation. Capt. Mackenzie wed Christiana Cadwalader of Phila.?

Philip at Ft. St. Augustine, Fla., served with his brother, Maj. Henry Yonge, Jr., who's plantation is now Ormond, Fla. (it's Public Library on Yonge Street). Jr. was H.M. Attorney-General of British East Florida, and as such; canceled 1,000 indentures of the New Smyrna Beach, Fla., enslaved Menorcans; and commanded a company of Florida, Menorcan Royal Provincial Militia.

Mrs. Christian Mackenzie Yonge's daughter, Eliza Claudia Yonge, wed Bank of Cape Fear officer Richard Bradley, Jr. (son of Patriot, Cont. Line paymaster Richard Bradley, Sr., of Wilmington, N.C.). Richard Jr's summer home is now "Airlie Gardens" on Bradley's Creek, N.C. Claudia is supposedly buried there under her second husband, Mr. Fleming's surname? As is her Bank of Wilmington, son-in-law Stephen Jewett, IV; who wed second, Miss. Lucy Anna Bradley; her daughter. My sister Anne, lives on Bradley's Creek Point Road.

Stephen and Lucy's grandson, was my late grandfather, Edw. Yonge Wootten.

Jim Miller, Southport, North Carolina

my email address has changed since 2005 when I first tried to locate my great grandfather, Walker Shepherd who was located on the 1900 Beauford SC census. He died sometime between 1900 and 1910. He was born in SC about 1860. He married Lucy Brunson of Scriven Co Ga. She was the dau of William M. Brunson and Jane Florence Jackson. Lucy was born Sept 1, 1866 in SC. The Brunson family later moved to Scriven Co. Ga. The Jackson family cemetery is in Scriven Co. Ga. where Lucy Brunson Shepherd is burried. Walker Shepherd died between 1900 and 1910. His widow, Lucy Shepherd, had 4 daughters one of them Leah Shepherd was my grandmother who married Hiram May Curry of Washington Co. Ga. Lucy Shepherd remarried a William West of Screvin Co. Ga. between 1900 and 1910. Mr West was a widowere with several children when he married Lucy Shepherd. I would like to know more about my great grandfather, Walker Shepherd. When did he die and where was he burried and who were his parents and where were they from ?.
