Hello,
I'm Dezzie Storne, a direct descendant of the Storne Family out of Blackville, South Carolina. My grandmother is an alert and sharp 95 years young. We have run into trouble identifying relatives earlier than 1870. Storne is a pretty rare name, even more so for people of African descent like us. I have identified a Dr. Alexander Storne in Blackville around the time my ancesters might have been there. Was our family name derived from the Joseph(wife Sophia born Sophia Prevost and son Alexander) Storne Family? Might my ancesters have been in the service of the Stornes?
Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dezzie R. Storne II

I am the decendant of Charley Radical, he's 9 years old in the 1870's Census; he's my great-great grandfather. I have asked my family and been doing research on this for a while and still no results as far as proof that Issac Courtney is related to us. There are storys of an uncle that would visit and stay for a while but no one seems to remember much, so there could be a chance that Barbary and Issac are brother and sister. There's a family get together this weekend, I will do more asking around and keep you posted. If you find anything could you let me know to? Thank you so much!

Received an e-mail from Joe Halford today which might have solved this question:

"I found your inquiry about the Moody Cemetery on an old Rootsweb forum on Barnwell County.

There are several Moody graves in an old cemetery that my family has called the Halford Cemetery. I had a hard time finding it, but finally did. It is within the fence of the Barnwell County Airport. This airport was a military airfield during WW2. The military did not disturb the graves and there have been a few funerals there after the war. One of my great uncles was married to Augusta V. Moody in the 1800s. They died in 1910 and 1924 and are both buried in this cemetery. There are several Moody family members buried in this location. This cemetery is very hard to find on your own, but personnel at the airport can take you right to it."

My grear-great grandparent(s)on my father side where slaves of either David H.Rice, William B. Rice or William Rice, who were white.

It's good to know how I got my last name and where it's most likely came from.
My grandmother is from Georgia; that's totally another tree.
Thank you so much for the information and God bless you.

Randey, first of all, the Rice Family in America probably got here before 1700. It appears they mostly settled in northern states, such as Penn., Vermont, Mass., etc. Onthe 1790 census (the first US census), some were in S.C.

Your Henry and Milford's parents were Henry (b. 1871) and Aggie m(b.1878) - both born in S.C. , as were their parents. I estimate they married circa 1898-99 and on the 1920 census of Bamberg Co., S.C. they had the following children: Bertha (born 1900); Emmie (1902); Wille (1903); Inez (1905); Milford (1909); Henry (1912); Cole (1915); and Eddy (1918). I didnot find Henry and Aggie on any census before 1920. Dependiing on how many broters and sisters Henry (1871) had, I estimate his parents were born during the 1840's. Apparently they were slaves.

On the 1860 Slave Holders cenus of Barnwell Co. (that is where Denmark was located. In 1898 it became Bamberg Co. ), there were 3 slaveholders named Rice. They were; David H. Rice (62 slaves);William B. Rice (48 slaves); and William Rice (43 slaves). I suspect your Henry (b. 1871) descended from slaves on one of those plantations.

Following the Civil War, when slaves were "freed", many slaves took the name of their slave holders. Possibly that is how your family acquired the name "Rice".

I hope this doesnot confuse you too much and provides you some useful info. Bob Eddings.

Hi,

I am researching Waldrop genealogy and someone who indicates he is a descendent of Samuel Washington Woodward participated in the FTDNA project for the Woodward family but his DNA seems to match more closely a couple of Waldrop descendents.

Then, at cousinconnect.com there is a post 01-Jun-2012 that says Waldrop:Woodward: Waldrop: name changed to Samuel Washington Woodward b. 1849 SC. No explanation as to what it means or by whom posted.

Anyway, I would like to contact someone familar with this Samuel Washington Woodward to try to determine if he was actually a Waldrop who was raised by a Woodward and took the name of that Woodward.

Thanks for any help.

Would anyone be willing to do a will lookup for me? I am located in Alabama and can't do this myself. I would be glad to return the favor or provide some type of compensation. The will I am looking for is that of John Cone 1774-1824 who married Amy Colding and died in Barnwell Dist. The notes I found say the following:

Clerk of the Court, Barnwell Co, SC: In the form of an agreement between "Anny" (probably AMY) Cone and the "hairs" of the deceased John Cone, the "hairs" are named as: John Cone, William Cone, Andrew Cone, John Ulmore, William Manuel, Theophilus Sauls and Joseph Harvey. (the last 4 are husbands of daughters Affy (Manuel),Catherne (Harvey, and 2 other s whose given names aren't known.

Deed book R p 353 15 June 1824"

I believe Andrew Cone listed here is my 4th great grandfather. I would be eternally grateful for a copy of this will!

My ggg grandfather was William Wesley Mixson/Mixon, SR. Born 1800. When he moved to Georgia he changed the spelling of his last name. We have no clue who his mother was or who his siblings were, although we know there were many. If anyone has any information or knows where I can find any information, please let me know. I've looked everywhere I know to look and sent out countless emails.

Thanks, Allison

I would like a copy but it is out of print. In the past I have contacted the authors of other genealogy books that are out of print and ask can I copy it they have given me permission. Especially if the book is out of print. Try it, that is how I ran across your posting. I am looking for an email address. I will be here until 5pm if you get this email. Return email request to me and I will be glad to do a look-up for you.

Debbie,

Thank You so much for telling me that info for Lila ( Lolla ) is she black? Marie ALLEN's death certificate only shows her Mother as Lila GOMILLION and Father as Jim ALLEN.
Marie ( Allen ) COURTNEY obit does not mention her parents or any of her siblings. All of Marie's children are gone except one and they don't know anything. I seen some census thinking maybe it was Marie's parents and siblings, but can't find them either to see if they had obit's and what theirs shows.
Thanks Again,

Theresa

There is a death certificate for Lila (Lolla) on FamilySearch. Married to james and died in 1930. Father Dave Gomillion, Mother Sallie. Granted that doesn't help but let me see what else I can find.

Debbie Bloom
Richland County Public Library

Marie ALLEN born abt. 1897 on 1940 census and her death certificate shows born September 05, 1904 in Dunbarton, Barnwell County, South Carolina. (Have seen other places showing her also born before 1900)
Having a heck of a time with both of these lines! Errrr

Anyway, I just found Marie ( Allen ) and husband Cudger COURTNEY on the 1940 census and they are in Augusta,Richmond County, Georgia.......It also shows that in 1935 they were in Edgefield, S.C. It also shows them with their 7 children.

Marie ALLEN's parents on her death certificate show as Jim ALLEN and Lila GOMILLION from S.C.
I'm thinking Jim mightbe James.

Thanks for reading,

Theresa
