This is of late response but hope it will be of some use. The DeRosset(t) Surname is found in the Cape Fear area of North Carolina (Wilmington - New Hanover Co). The surname appears in Vols I & II of the New Hanover Co, NC Court Minutes (1739-1769) & (1771-1785). - I have not studyed the surname and am not familiar with the James D* Bryan(t). I do know that the neighboring county during that era had surname of Bryan(t) -often interchanged in later docs.

Hi, Aryl
Yes, you may want to check in with "The Clearfield Progress", the Clearfield County newspaper. My father's family name was Vallimont. I understand that they had some connection to the Huguenots.

Sincerely,
Connie Valimont Santell

Hi Connie:

How much do you know about the Huguenots in Clearfield County? Are there some records in that county that I should be checking out? My mother's maiden name was LaBorde. They didn't live in Frenchville. They originally came to the Rockton/Chestnut Grove area.

Sincerely,
Aryl Ann Bashline

Hi, Thomas
Don't know if this is helpful or not, but my father's family, Valimont, is decended from French Huguenot's. As I understand it, our Greatgrandfather (4x's removed) brought the family here from France in 1834. His surname at the time was "Fauconnier or Fauconier". We believe he "adopted" our grandmothers last name. They settled in the small town of Frenchville, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. You may want to search Clearfield County records for more info.
Connie Valimont Santell
Great-Grandaughter (4GR) Four generations removed.

Judy, I am another Judy. My family is Happoldt out of Charleston, two sets or more of their guns are in museum in Charleston now. Interesting fact about Rivers family is that the MEndall Rivers, congressman, was first cousin to mr. Rivers that was the ownere and first television station in Charleston, of which I went to work when it first went on the air. stayed a short time but got to know Mr. Rivers personally. this minute cannot recall his first name(senior moment), but He was Pres. of Radio station, and then built and operated, owned the tv station there. WCSC Channel 5. I was secretary to the V Pres. of TV and singing on air, conducting tours of the station etc. THis is an old prestegious family in Charleston. If you want info on Rivers, perhaps the Mendall RIvers, who was famous would bring up some information on his parents, and cousins etc. Punch in Mendall Rivers+Charleston+Genealogy, or any combination of this. I am sure you know this tho. JUDY

The census takers have destroyed the name. I am searching for any information on the surname. I found a Samuel S, Leger in Lowndes Co. Ga 1860, married to a Martha from Fl. Samuel states he was born in SC abt 1822. Served in the Civil War and died before 1870 after his service. Found in Fl a Moses S, Leger from SC. whom I believe is the father to Samuel. 1830 Santee SC finds a Daniel, James, Stewart M. and a Samuel Leger. The will of a John Leger states heirs of his cousin William went to the west lands? I think he meant TN, GA, Al as I find them there in later census. Perhaps this Stewart M. is the same fellow Moses S. Stewart, Samuel and James stayed in my line after the 1900 census and are found in GA with the name spelled Ledger. Would appreciate any information on this name. I have copies all the census pages with same name and am almost finished doing the 1850 AL census and no luck.

Diana
Diana@grtm.us

I don't know if it is French Huguenot, but suspect you are right, since I see the Yonn name along with my French Huguenot family Herlan and others listed in the Giessendanner Book of Record.

Have you looked at this old listing of records made by the Rev. Giessendanner in Orangeburgh County, SC? One of his descendants has placed this information online on the Giessendanner Family website. Try your brower's search for Giessendanner Family Book of Record and you may locate it pretty easily.

Good luck!

Doris

Hi,

This looks like the family of John Dashiell and Polly Handy.
They were married around 1796 in Somerset Co, Md. One son, Ebinezer Handy Dashiell, 1806-1875 was born in Somerset Co but died in Memphis.

I have little after that as I'm following the ones who became Dashield/Dashields and went to Baltimore. Some of them seem to be related to the Handys as well. Many in the Dashiell family have Handy in their name somewhere.

I did find out a little more about the early Dashiells. Most of the descendants not only are related to James Dashiell of Scotland and his wife Ann Cannon but most are also related to George Mitchell and Isabell Higgins. Three of the Dashiell sons married this Mitchell family and there is a lot of intermarriage with cousins marrying cousins. It's hard to be a Dashiell and not a Cannon/Mitchell/Higgins. One can add Jones to that and for many Handy.

Hope I've helped in some way.

Gloria
(g-grandmother Anna Dashield)

Judy, Discussed Rivers family of James Island with you. My Georgianna Rivers daughter of a William Rivers d. 1841. Do not have mother's name. Gerorgianna sister was Ann McCants Rivers b. 11 Jul 1803 d. 26 Jun 1826. Georgianna was b 4 Apr 1812 d 30 Jan 1887 m. 1828 to Edward Christopher Burch the widower of her sister. Your Rivers are through Charleston? Georgetown is about 70 miles north of Charleston and was an arrival port in itself. Does this fit with your Rivers. I am sure there were Rivers in other parts of Charleston area but no hard data on them presently. Lou Gage

I am trying to trace my DeShields family in South Carolina. We are said to be French Hugeunots and I am at a loss to find answers. Hope someone can help me. Here is what I know.

Joel DeShields was born in South Carolina in about 1782. He married Charity b 1777-1779 in SC (maiden name unknown) in probably South Carolina since their first children were born in South Carolina. Their first children were:
William Jasper DeShields born October 28, 1808 SC
Mary DeShields born 1808-1809 SC
Cyrus Josiah DeShields born 1810 SC
Joel DeShields born 1815 SC
Unknown female DeShields born 1810-1815 (may have died early)not sure of birth location.
Handy DeShields born Feb 28, 1819 in Coffee County, Tn.

Handy is my ggggrandfather. Joel and Charity left SC before 1819.

I am told Joel is the sibling of:
Mary DeShields b 1768 in SC married William Alexander Goggans in 1783 in SC died in child birth Oct 22, 1800 in Pendleton, SC (4th child named Josiah)

Thomas DeShields b 1773-1776 died 1842 in Spartanburg
married Catherine Bethune

Martha DeShields b 1776-1780 married John Charles Mimms

So, I feel the family was in South Carolina from at least 1768 to 1808. Hope someone can help me.

Reta DeShields Parton
rpsodapop@aol.com
Thanks for the info. How are the early records on James Island listed. I have started going throught the Colonial &State records of S. C. (a set of books) at the archives in Columbia. This is a chore! the N. C. set has one major index, in these books each book is indexed. takes a little longer! I do know that some of the Rivers on James Island were Presby. Haven't had a chance to go through Presby. records yet. Do you know if there were early Rivers in another part of Charleston other then James Island?

Thanks again for your help

Judy

Only have Georgianna name. She married a Christopher Edward Burch They had a child Eliza Mary Burch m. 1848 in Charleston City. I am guessing that Eliza Mary Burch was born about 1828. If her parents were 25 then they were born about 1803. That is all I have but will check with someother folks. James Island is in Charleston County formed in 1780. The orginal Berkley County covered norther CHarleston, some of Dorchester and Berkley County. Lou Gage.

Check the Cantey file in Family Tree Maker archives.
In the blanks request Robin Langley, she has an
extensive Cantey file, which is my line also. Wiggins
sounds right but it is possible he married both. To be
sure, check the file or put in James Cantey's name
for his own file.
