Patrick J. Sullivan of Rhode Island

Seeking descendants of Patrick J. Sullivan (1865-1930's)of Tramore, Co. Waterford who came to RI in 1882, first settling in Woonsocket, eventually to Edgewood section of Providence on Ohio St. He and wife Mary, also of Ireland, had 6 childen in RI: John (1894), James F. (1895), Mary Gertrude (1896), Agnes E. (1899), William J. known as Willie (1905) and Ida (1907).

Patrick was an older brother of my grandfather, James J. Sullivan (1880-1949) also of RI. Other known siblings of Patrick who came to RI were John, Mary Sullivan Barron, Michael and Jeremiah, the latter two dying in RI as single males from the 1918 flu epidemic.

I have done extensive research on my Sullivan ancestry in Tramore and in RI. Try as I have, I have yet to find contact with any descendants of Patrick J. Sullivan. Related surnames that may trigger a response are Barron, McCarthy, Callan.

Obituary for George A. Thomas, 1865, Hopkinton, Rhode Island

I need help finding a community newspaper or gazette where a death notice, obituary, funeral service or obsequies, memorial or burial service may have been reported. The time will be about April or May, 1865. The place for the funeral or memorial service may have been at Hopkinton, Washington County, Rhode Island, or Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island. The burial service would have been at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, Rhode Island. The person of interest is Private George A. Thomas, a Union soldier in the US Civil War serving with Company A, Seventh Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteers. Private George A. Thomas died on active duty April 14, 1863 in an Army hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. His body was transported “home” most likely to Hopkinton, Rhode Island where his wife and two children resided. His body was buried in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, Rhode Island. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Bob Doughty, Seattle, Washington
I am trying to trace the ancestry of one Susan Clark (b abt 1839 in Pawtucket [the part that became North Providence]), and so far to no avail.

The only clue I have to her ancestry (we have yet to find a birth certificate) comes from Susan's obituary. She married Ephraim Hunt Tappan in 1856, and settled in Attleboro (they had three children who survived to adulthood - Charles, William, and Ella) where she died in 1912. Her obituary indicates that her father was Lyman Clark (of Pawtucket [although I'm not sure he was born there]), and a librarian at the Attleboro Public Library tells me that her mother was apparently an Amy Gardner of Kingstown, RI. The obituary for Susan also indicates she had a sister Lydia (who was married to Albert F Briggs of Attleboro [Briggs was we believe the business partner of the Tappans; Ephraim and Susan's sons sold their jewellry company to DF Briggs in the early part of the 20th century]); Lydia was apparently born about 1835.

I have contacted the Rhode Island State Archives and have been told that there is no indication of a Lyman Clarke family in Rhode Island census records between 1800 and 1850. Furthermore, there is no apparent marriage record in Washington County (where the Attleboro librarian tells me Amy Gardner was born) for a marriage between an Amy Gardner and Lyman Clarke, and no apparent death records for Lyman and Amy between 1800 and 1990 in Rhode Island.

It is possible that records of Lyman's birth and marriage to Amy Gardner may have been recorded in Massachusetts, as Pawtucket was apparently a part of Seekonk until 1828, and an independent city in Massachusetts until 1862. However, the Seekonk town clerk says there was no record of a Lyman Clark birth in the years 1785-1818 in Seekonk.

Help!

He married Mary UNKNOWN (born abt 1802 in Madison Co, NY).

Children (there may have been others):
Daniel--born abt 1825 in Rhode Island
Charles--born abt 1835 in Mass.
Jay--born abt 1841 in Rhode Island
Horatio--born abt 1845 in Chenango Co, NY (fought in Civil War)

I have found them in Orwell, Oswego Co, NY in 1850 and they are there until they died.

I found a Richard BELLOWS b. June 20, 1788 in Rhode Island in the book, "The Bellows genealogy; or John Bellows, the boy emigrant of 1635 and his descendants" by Thomas Peck Bellows. However, it does not list Richards descendants in the book. I wonder if anyone continued with this line of research that might tell me if this is MY Richard BELLOWS.

Charles Kerner was born 1841 in Strassburg, Alsace-Lorraine, France. His brother was born 1849 in Providence, RI. Charles was naturalized in 1848 according to a census. I don't know their parents names. Is there any chance of finding his naturalization papers? Can anyone tell me how to find them? Thank you for any help. Diane

BANCROFT Families in RI and MA (Ponkapoag Tribe)

Hello. I just found out this month that one of my possible ancestors * was a Robert BANCROFT who lived with the Ponkapoag Tribe in Canton, MA, in the early 1700's. It is not known whether he was a Native American or "an Englishman" living with them. Different books say different things. But, it is also said that BANCROFT / BANCRAFT is a Native American surname, and there are BANCROFT Native Americans in the 1800's.

The reason I'm mentioning it here is that yesterday I did the "search the archives of the Lists" feature for "Ponkapoag," and found it mentioned on a few RI Boards and Lists.

An additional note about Robert BANCROFT is that, according to the "history of Stoughton, MA," he was "living with" Elizabeth PICKETT - with the Tribe. I'm told that "whites" and "Indians" could not legally marry before 1800. Elizabeth was from Marblehead, MA (her mother was a SEVERY). When Robert died, Elizabeth remarried twice, once to a _____ TAYLOR and next (soon after) to Asa MOOHOO, possibly both being Native American men.

Robert and Elizabeth had moved to Middleton, MA, to have their 10 to 12 children. I am descended * from their daughter, Sarah BANCROFT, who married William WILKINS in Middleton. They had 6 children (3 died), and then moved to "Maine." I am trying to prove that they had a 7th child in "Maine" - a son, Samuel, my ancestor.

I have had heard from a TAYLOR researcher who wonders whether the Mr. TAYLOR who married the widow, Mrs. Elizabeth BANCROFT, was related to his ancestors. One of her daughters also married a TAYLOR.

I have not yet found out who Robert BANCROFT's parents were. There was a patriarch, John BANCROFT, in 1600's. But, I have not found anyone researching him (yet).

Thank you for your time.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

* My ancestor is Samuel WILKINS, born 1770's in "Maine," and I am descended from 2 of this children. I cannot find out who his parents were. My "educated guess" is that they were William and Sarah (BANCROFT) WILKINS who moved to "Maine" in the 1770's.

-- Oh, I forgot to ask a question. When searching the archives of the Lists and Boards for "Ponkapoag" yesterday, I read that there is a man who has done a lot of research on the Native Americans who lived there. I'm curious if he is still available.

(Samuel and Electra (?) WILKINS had 5 children. Their daughter, Mary, married J. Calvin KIDDER in Maine. Their son, Joseph KIDDER, returned from the Civil War to marry his cousin, Clarissa WILKINS. "Clara" was the daughter of George and Mary (NEAL) WILKINS. Their son, George, was my great-grandfather.)

Greenes from RI, Mass, PA in Ohio

I am posting the Greenes that are found in Washington Co., OH. I have been researching a line of Greenes in my family that appear to be in PA. My line includes a Thomas Greene who was a Revolutionary War soldier. My distant relatives claim that our line of Greenes are connected to the more well known Greenes in RI. I haven't proven that yet but when I looked at the Greenes within Washington Co, OH and compared with a book on the Greenes of New England it is interesting to note many similarities in given names and dates. So I transcribed the Greenes found in Cemeteries around Washington Co., OH and would like some feedback if anyone should recognize them.

GREEN FAMILY FOUND IN CEMETERIES OF WASHINGTON CO., OH:

MOUND CEMETERY:
Green Richard--born East Greenwich R. I will post that one separately.

Leslyn Lang
1mercury@cox.net

RI 1885 State Census look up please

Would be grateful if someone could please advise me if Annie HANLEY born Aug 1867/1870 in Ireland, daughter of Patrick and Mary A HANLEY nee CONNORS/CONNOLLY, appears in the RI 1885 State Census. I believe she arrived in the US in 1884 but do not know if she was with her family, who also emigrated, at the time. She married John Joseph HAFEY on 8 September 1890 and lived in Providence for the rest of her life. There is a possibility that she may have been living at 99 Ives Street, Providence in 1884 with at least Patrick HANLEY and there is a John HAFEY at 46 Ives Street so perhaps this is where they met. Any help you are able to offer would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Ljay

Immigration or marriage details Michael HAFEY and wife Catherine nee FISHER

Would be grateful for any information on the immigration or possible marriage details for Michael HAFEY and his wife Catherine nee FISHER who were both born in Ireland. Their son John Joseph HAFEY was born c1863 in Massachuesetts so they probably emigrated before this date. John Joseph married Annie HANLEY in September 1890 in Providence RI. Thank you for any advice or assistance you are able to offer. Ljay

I am seeking descendents of C.H. Bowen, possibly from Missouri in the Ozark area or Illinois. I have in my possession about a dozen pencil drawings of cabins, boats, men and ferries with one entitled "A Ferry on the Osage". I think they are possibly from about 1935 as my parents honeymooned in the Ozarks then and these may have been acquired at that time.

I would like to be able to send these to a descendent. Any help in locating the descendents would be greatly appreciated.
Lois Brinks-Heath

this article lists the freemen and gives brief sketches of these people. if you don't have access to NEHGS, you can ask for the article through your local public library/interlibrary loan.

the population of block island was small. while many of the names appear to be duplicate names, it is probably more the case that they named people after close relatives. and they knew who the people were, so they didn't do a good job of differentiating between people. they frequently used last names of people as first names. they used the wife's maiden name as first names.

the beauty of this article is that the author gave information about some of the lesser known names.

new england historical and genealogical register, volume 105, pages 162-182
author: g. andrews moriarty, block island historical society.
"some notes on block islanders of the seventeenth century"

1664 freemen
thomas terry, peter george, simon ray, william harris, samuel dearing (deering), john rathbone (rathbun), john davies or davis, samuel staple, hugh williams, robert guthrie (guttrig), william tosh (mcintosh), tormot rose (some use ross), william cahoone (calhoun), tristram dodge, john clarke, joseph kent, william baker or barker.

1684 freemen
robert guthrie, nathaniel niles, peter george, simon ray, benjamin niles, edward ball, nathaniel winsley, nathaniel mott, tormut rose, william tosh, mr. hancock, john gunnel, john niles, john dodge, william dodge, tristram dodge, john acres (akers, ackurs), josiah helling, mr. harris (probably william harris), james sands, john mott, samuel george, thomas rathbone, william rathbone, jose (joseph) coddington, nathaniel briggs, william judd, john rathbone, daniel tosh, james sands, sr. simon ray, peter george, john williams, robert guthrie, capt. john sands, john rathbone sr, nathaniel niles, john niles, james sands jr., thomas mitchell, john rathbone, jr., thomas rathbone, tristram dodge jr., samuel george, william dodge, john dodge, john gunnell, nathaniel briggs, william tosh, tormut rose, william harris, tristram dodge sr., edward ball, john acres, william rodes, benjamin niles, william rathbone, josiah helling, joseph billington, alexander enos(innes).

freemen of 1696
thomas rathbone, william rathbone, john rathbone, daniel tosh, james danielson, mr. hancock, john mitchell, thomas mitchell, thomas duchings, joseph rathbone, edward sands, mr. banning (john), edward mott, nathaniel winsley, joshua raymond.

rhode island allowed individuals to reside on their island, but gave freeman status to those that deemed honorable and worthy by community standards. if a freeman disturbed the peace, they also withdrew freeman status. freemen were allowed to vote in community affairs and were obligated to do community service. at that time, property owners were allowed to be freemen.

many communities granted land but the property owner had to improve the land within a year in order to continue to own the land. unimproved land often went back to the community.

freeman status can designate residence at a time when census records were few.
I know the year he was born, but no information on his death other than he was alive on the 1880 Cencus and not on the 1890. His wife Bridget died June 28, 1903. I thought if I found where they were buried I might find the county in Ireland where they came from. My great grandfather is buried in St. Francis in Pawtucket. Any suggestions on where I should look would be appreciated.

I am looking for information about my grandparents. They came from Italy possibly at the turn of the century. There actual birth first names were Giacomo and Gesualda.

My grandmother's full name before she married my grandfather was Josephine (or Gesualda Lombardi Campopiano. Her married name was Campopiano. She had 4 children by her first husband before his death. She married my grandfather, James (Giacomo), and had 7 more children.

The family history is fragmented, but I have been told my grandfather had a sister who married and moved to New York.

They both resided in or around the Providence area until their deaths in the 1960's.
Thank you.

As of a couple of weeks ago, I am the new Admin for this board. A few weeks prior to that I became Admin of the RIGenWeb list, which despite the name is not just for GenWeb but is the statewide list for Rhode Island, and as of a short while ago the two are gatewayed together and all posts to this board now go automatically to the list as well.

Please be aware of this new change, as it will greatly increase the exposure of any posts to this board. For those of you who read and want to respond to a board post found on the list, you will need to click on the link in the list post, and it will take you to the board where you can reply. Responding on the list WILL NOT likely be seen by the person you are responding to, unless he/she also happens to be a list subscriber as well. If you are not familiar with how this works, please feel free to drop me a line privately and I will be happy to explain it further.

I am looking forward to working with you in the future, and expanding our knowledge and researc in Rhode Island genealogy.

other burial resources than E Greenwich, R.I. Library - for year 1849

I have contacted the Public Library in East Greenwich, Rhode Island in hopes I could find some burial records about a Charlotte Keach, buried at Historical Cemetery #38 - she died March 13, 1849 and her gravestone says, "wife of George." Since Charlotte Keach's headstone is very close to Almira BRIGGS Keach's gravestone I believe that this Charlotte was one of my anscestors. There are many George Keach's and I really need to find out what Charlotte Keach's maiden name was! Can anyone suggest any other places to look for burial records in Rhode Island (East Greenwich) for the year 1849?

The librarian at the Greenwich Library could not find any other documents, other than the one I told her that I had, Bruce Campbell MscGunnigle's book, "East Greenwich, Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Inscriptions."

Thank you in advance for any suggestions,

Monica

Planning a trip to RI to try and break through a few brick walls. People I am researching were born mid to late 1700s. While I know some birthplace towns (Scituate and North Kingstown)for several others, I only know they were born RI. Looked at State Archives web site and not sure they have these VRs. Can anyone suggest a centralized location where I might find browsable BMD records for the entire state? Thanks

I do not know if Henry had any children at all.Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. I do not know how to do USA family research.
Hello I'm looking for any trace of my great grandparents in RI.

They are listed on the 1910 census in Portsmouth, RI and are listed as immigrating to RI in 1885. They wed in 1899. Both were working on Anthony's Farm in Middletown, RI at the time.

On 1910 Census they are listed as Manuel R. Rosa b. 1885 and Mary R. Rosa b. 1885.

On my grandmother's marriage record they are listed as Manuel Rosa Goncalves and Maria R. Goncalves.

My gr. grandmothers tombstone reveals the name Mary N. Rosa Silva Gonsalves. I believe Mary (known first as Maria) Silva was her maiden name.

Family history tells me my G. Grandmother was born on Christmas day.

Can anyone find a marriage notice/record for Mary Rosa or Mary Goncalves married to Manuel Rosa or Manuel Goncalves in 1899?

Can anyone find them on a census prior to 1910?

Can anyone find anything on them prior to 1910 or after 1910?
Mary may have passed on in RI in 1929.
The family can be confirmed to have lived in Portsmouth, Bristol and Middletown. They had five children who lived to adulthood.
Any help most welcome. Questions answered swiftly and honestly.

Any leads or suggestions on my Bailey family line are appreciated.

My 3xGreat Grandfather is George Bailey, born in Rhode Island approximately 1781 - 1785.

He moved to Livingston County, New York state and possibly lived in Leicester, then spent most of his life farming in Avon. He appears to have arrived in western New York in the 1820's/30's.
His children included William M. Bailey, James Bailey, Lucy Bailey, and Elvia Bailey (all born New York). Also had a little girl named Matilda Sutton who lived with the family and was apparently later adopted and took the Bailey name. (I mention these children, as their names may ring a bell with someone in the Rhode Island line.)

Is this familiar to anyone? I've found a few George's from Rhode Island, ruled a couple out, others have me stumped.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Edward P.
Need birth info. Charles was the son of William Mc Clellan and his wife Elizabeth. He was born about 1856 in Rhode Island. The name may have been spelled Mc Callan by mistake. The family shows up in St. Louis, Missouri on the 1880 census but I can't find them prior to that. William was born about 1799, Elizabeth about 1819.

My gggrandfather John Riley emigrated with six siblings from Kilglass Parish, Co. Roscommon to RI in 1848. Six siblings followed. He lived for a time in Providence and Burrillville. Would like to connect with any descendants of Kilglass ancestors in RI.
John Riley married Catherine McNally in Providence in 1853. She came from Latton, Aughnamullen Parish, Co. Monaghan with her mother and at least one or two sisters. I would like any information about emigration paths from Monaghan to RI. Because these immigrants were all women, it is hard to trace them. Related family names were Hand and Lee from Co. Monaghan. They probably came with some group from Monaghan so I would like to make contact with other Monaghan family descendants.

Hello-

I'm looking for a hard to find ancestor, Maria Green (I've seen her as "Martha" and "Mary" as well.) b 1844 in County Roscommon, Ireland. She had her first child with husband John McCue in 1865, her son also named John was born in NY. Then she had a daughter, Susan "Susannah" McCue b1867 in Rhode Island. Then she had the rest of her children in NJ and PA. These are the 2 census records I've found for her 1870 - NJ, and 1880 -Philadelphia. After that she disappears. I know she dies in 1917 in Rhode Island, but I have no idea why she returns to Rhode Island, who her parents are, when she came over etc. Most of my ancestors lived in Philadelphia & stayed there, so I'm really not sure why she moved around so much. If any one has any information I'd be very grateful! Thanks!

O'Malley, Brown, Spaulding, Howard, Cornell

I am interested in a Walter O'Malley/Bridget O'Malley family who settled in Lincoln RI in 1880. The family later moved to Central Falls and to Providence. In 1880 Mary was 12; Thomas, who went West and married Elizabeth Gallagher in either Nevada or Los Angeles, was 10; Ellen was 8; Elizabeth, who might not have married, was 6, and Anna who married a Brown was 4. Bridget, the mother, must have died young and Walter probably died between 1900-1910.

Although I placed this query on the Providence County board,
I am interested in Mary also and don't know who she married or where she lived.

A younger daughter,Catherine/Kate must have married a Cornell but divorced soon after. Her son was Charles, who probably stayed in RI and might be the Charles who was a steeplejack in 1930. She later married Joseph Spaulding, a house painter in Central Falls, and they had a daughter Helen.

Elizabeth O'Malley, granddaughter, almost two, was living with the family in 1900, but nothing more is known of her.

By 1920 Annie O'Malley Brown was widowed with a son Edward, 14, and a daughter Mary, 8. I believe she later married a Howard.

If anyone is connected to this family, I would be interested in touching base as Thomas O'Malley married my grand-aunt.

This is the first time that I am going to apply for a death certificate. What if I am not a direct relative of a person whom I'm getting a death certificate for? I want to know that person's family information. Do you think that the Vital Statistic will deny me the information? Is there another way around the vital statistic department? Are there death certificates available at the library? I do not need a certified copy, just the information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

BLEVINS / BLEVENS / BLIVEN / BLIVIN Genealogical DNA Project

BLEVINS / BLEVENS / BLIVEN / BLIVIN Genealogical DNA Project

6 January 2007

To: All BLEVINS / BLEVENS / BLIVEN / BLIVIN descendants and researchers

Especially seek BLIVEN / BLIVIN participants who are proven back to Edward BLIVEN [b c1660s of Washington Co. RI, Westerly area] OR those who think they are of this line.

Subject: Time to join the BLEVINS /BLEVENS / BLIVEN / BLIVIN DNA Project!!

NOTE: I am in no way affiliated with any DNA testing company—my only interest is finding more participants for the project in order to further the genealogy of this surname group.

From: Kenneth W. SHIRLEY [descendant of Thomas BLEVINS [b c1823, m1842 Miami Co. OH Catherine YOUNCE of Ashe Co. NC]—Thomas is POSSIBLE son of Nathan BLEVINS b c1762 [m1 Rachel SKAGGS, m2 1802 Lydia (?VAUGHN?) PEPPERS]

Note: 37-marker DNA testing results show that a participant from my Thomas BLEVINS line matches 37/37 with Edward BLIVEN [b c1660s of Washington Co. RI, Westerly area]—indicates a common ancestor for the two participants. Need more participants from the Edward BLIVEN line.

Purpose: Seeking males named BLEVINS/BLEVENS/BLIVEN/BLIVIN [and other spelling alternatives—will use "BLEVINS" here for the sake of brevity] for participation in BLEVINS DNA Project

There is a BLEVINS/BLIVEN surname DNA project already in place. The person who is coordinating the BLEVINS DNA project is Owen BLEVINS who will be happy to assist any prospective participant. Owen’s email address is:

OBlevins@aol.com

If you are interested in participating OR if you know of a male BLEVINS/BLIVEN of your line who is willing to participate, just contact Owen BLEVINS, the DNA project administrator or, if you prefer, let me know that you want to participate. If someone from your line joins, be sure to have him give the identity of his "earliest proven ancestor" and sign the consent form that allows him to be informed of DNA matches with other participants [and vice-versa].

The project is relatively new, although there already are now some 20 DNA project participants and some very interesting and informative DNA matches among the participants.

You can contact Owen BLEVINS directly for additional information. Once you agree that you would like to participate in the DNA project, a DNA kit will be mailed to the name and address that you provide. Follow the instructions received with the kit, then mail it in with payment, and wait for the results. The DNA sample collection is a simple and painless procedure--brushing the inside of your cheek with a "cotton swab-like" collector.

It is my understanding that the results will be sent to the participant and a copy of the results to the BLEVINS/BLIVEN DNA project coordinator [Owen BLEVINS] who will post the results [anonymously] online, along with the name of your earliest PROVEN male BLEVINS/BLIVEN ancestor, at the BLEVINS DNA project website and on Owen BLEVINS website. Your results can then be compared with other BLEVINS/BLIVEN DNA project participants.

A few reminders:

A participant in the BLEVINS/BLIVEN DNA project must be a MALE with the surname of BLEVINS [or any variation such as BLEVENS/ /BLIVIN, or any male who thinks his surname might once have been one of these surnames].

Female BLEVINS/BLIVEN descendants/researchers [as well as male BLEVINS /BLEVIN descendants/researchers who are not named BLEVINS/BLEVIN] can assist greatly by recruiting male BLEVINS/BLEVIN DNA project participants and/or assisting the male participants financially with the cost of the DNA testing.

There are several levels of Y-DNA testing available for what we are doing [the 12-marker test, the 25 marker test, the new 37 marker test, and even a 68 marker test].. The more markers the better--whatever you feel you can do financially. Tests with the greater number of markers allow greater capability to begin sorting out the BLEVINS lines. I would very strongly urge any participant to go with at least the 37-marker test. The 37 (or larger) is necessary, in my opinion, to begin making heads or tails of the various branches of BLEVINS.] The more markers the more expensive the test, but the more you have to compare among branches of the BLEVINS family

Hope to hear soon that you have contacted Owen BLEVINS and have arranged to receive the DNA test kit, and shortly after that--that you have mailed in the kit for analysis. Thanks for your interest.

Ken Shirley
Grantville, Kansas
ShirleyKWJL@Gmail.com
