I tried looking him up in the Social Security Death Index, but could not find him. If he died before he was able to collect benefits, he may not be listed. Although, he may still have had a social security number. A death certificate may list his number. You should try to get his official death record from the state he died. If he died in Rhode Island, here is the web site:
http://www.health.ri.gov/chic/vital/index.php

Good Luck!

The Archives in Providence, R.I. has death records. No SS# is required, all you need is an approximate date of death. Here's their email::

reference@sec.state.ri.us

I recently came across this family photo of a man identified as John J. Oates Excercise Captain of the Irish Volunteers. The photo was taken in Rhode Island. This uniform doesn't match anything I've seen on-line, but possibly resembles the uniform described as the one used by the Fenians to invade Canada.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks for posting this. I'm sure the date of birth
and location of birth would have been supplied by John
himself, so most likely they are correct - Mats should
be able to search for the birth record with this information.

From the 1942 Providence Directory
Allen & Reed, Inc.
Inc RI '02 W.
I'm not related, but I looked up John Peterson and found he was registered for the military in the USA on April 27, 1942 (WWII). His name on the card was" John Berhnard Peterson." He lived at 88 Chestnut Street, Cranston, Rhode Island and was born Sept. 16, 1878 in Gottland, Sweden and was married to a Jennie E. Peterson. He worked at Allen & Reed in Providence, RI. His height was 5 ft. 8 in. and had blue eyes, gray hair, bald and light skin. He also wore glasses.

I don't know anything about researching in Sweden for
someone's birth records. You could try here for some
ideas: http://www.cyndislist.com/sweden.htm

The date of birth from the military registration would
have been supplied by John himself, so I would think that
is the date to use until you can find his birth certificate.

Have you tried to find an obituary for John?

I would ask on this list if there is a volunteer who
can look it up for you.

If you can get his obituary, you might learn the married
names of his daughters and where he is buried. It might
also say where in Sweden he was born.

Lisa

Their name is spelled Petterson in this directory.
She is not listed in the 1959 under Peterson or Petterson.

It looks like your John B. remarried to a woman named
Jennie E. by 1938. He is still at the same address.

Gladys O was listed in the 1936 directory, but not 1938 so she must have married or died between these years.

Evelyn is still at home in 1938, but not listed in 1939.

John & Jennie are listed in the 1950 Cranston directory, but
the next directory at ancestry.com is 1956, and they are not there.

Maybe someone can go to the library and see where they are
after 1950.

I realize this doesn't answer your questions completely, but
at least it narrows down the years to look for other events.

The Herbert W. Meyer in the 1920 Gitmo Census stated his address in Providence was 193 Whitehall St. In the 1917 Providence City Directory, there's a Louis H. Meyer whose occupation is a bottler, and lives on 193 Whitehall St., so it looks like this is the right Herbert.

I thought it was interesting that Elizabeth Meyer in the 1920 Somerville, Ma. Census was a model in a department store.

Assuming this is your Elizabeth and Herbert, I wonder why they're both stating they're single. Maybe they got a divorce and he left her to join the service??

You may want to try projo.com, which is the Providence Journal's web site. I think they have an archive search, but it only goes back to the early 1990s or 1980s (not sure). I believe there is a charge for this database (to see entire articles or lists). I haven't used it in a few years, so my info here may not be accurate. It's probably worth checking out.

Have you tried the Social Security Death Index?

The Terranovas I knew lived in Westerly, RI....I visited them when I was young with my Mother...Leana Terranova worked in the mill aside my Mother in Shannock, RI in the 30's...I was born in 43. I don't think Leana ever married, but her Mother and I think sister lived in the same house...there was another lady 'Dolly' that seemed to 'hang'together. Try the Westerly Tax Records...wish I could help you more.

I am looking for any information about Elizabeth B. (Haddigan) Meyer and any children she might have had.

She married Herbert Washington Meyer (Feb 22, 1890 - May 7, 1980) on Apr 20, 1914 in Rhode Island and the family rumor is that they had a son. That's all the information I have about her or her children.

The 1920 census finds a Herbert W. Meyer from Providence, RI at Gitmo and single, but I don't know if that is the same Herbert Meyer or not. Mine married a second wife, Mary Cecilia ("Mae"), at some point, but they had no children.

It is Elizabeth and her possible children whom I am most interested in. Thanks.

US
Providence Ward 08, ED 338
Page F, Line 42

Since there were no images attached, I typed in MYER and went through 23 pages for others in Ward 08, ED 338, hopefully Line 43, but did not find any. Maybe you can look again

It looks like the family had moved to Mass. by 1917/1918. All the brothers of Elizabeth had registered for the Draft there.

Walter James HADDIGAN
Living at West Roxbury, Suffolk Co, MASS
b. 21 DEC 1881
He was a painter and listed Sarah Jane HADDIGAN as someone who would always know where he was at.

William David HADDIGAN
Living in Roxbury, Suffolk Co, MASS
b. 29 APR 1888 in Rhode Island

Edward Joseph HADDIGAN
Living in Jamaica Plain, Suffolk Co, MASS
b. 27 NOV 1895 in Ws??ford Junction, Rhode Island
*Edward's WWII list place of birth at Kingston, RI

Tried to find family in 1920 to see if grandson or nephew/niece were living with them.

Michael, Jennie & Edward are living together in Boston, Wd. 22,

Found other siblings with no children. Found Mary A HADDIGAN married Samuel L BICKFORD.

Also, since family moved to MASS, I searched for b. Rhode Island, father b. England, mother b. MASS. I found an Elizabeth MEYER, but indicates single and also living in Middlesex County, Summerville. She is a lodger living with Lenox and Sadie SHAUGHNESSY

Thank you, but I don't think that is the Mary I am looking for. You see, my great grandmother Emelia (Rose) St Germain was born in 1901 and my great great grandmother, Mary was born 1878 in Canada. Mary married Jean Baptiste St Germain in 1900 and I think she may have already had a daughter named Mildred or Esther at the time. I think Jean Baptiste was born in RI in 1872 and he died in RI in 1956.

Current newspapers

Hi - I'm trying to help someone in the UK find her 96 year old father's cousin. The last she knew is that he was living in Rhode Island in the 1950's. She doesn't know where - and since it's relativily current there is no census, and I'm not having any luck with finding them on earlier censuses. So I was thinking maybe a marriage announcement or something might be in a current article. I'm in California, so she's actually closer in the UK, lol so stopping by a local library is out.

So here's my question. What are the local newspapers? and are they on line? and once i'm done with those, is there a historical one? i.e. New York Times, Los Angeles Times Historical. And what would be the big newspaper in that area? would it even be in Rhode Island? maybe a neighboring state might carry the news?

thanks for any of your thoughts and leads

Julie
sunnydaze1@hotmail.com

This gatewayed to my inbox via the RIGENWEB List.

At this point in time, archived issues of the major newspaper for RI, The Provicence Journal formerly the Providence Journal & Journal bulletin in the days of both a morning & evening edition, is no longer available online.

ProQuest, the company that carries archived newspapers around the US online, decided unwisely to hit RI libraries with a double whammy at a point in time when no library could financially handle it.

Whammy 1 - ProQuest decided to reduce the content included in the on line archived editions specifically dropping, for one, the obits which so many researchers use.

Whammy 2 - The Recession has hit all RI libraries. The Providence Public Library, for one, now only consists of the main library on Empire St. downtown Providence, having shed it's branch libraries as of 1 July 2009 in order to survive. So, at a time when all the libraries have seen their funding reduced, ProQuest decided to hit the RI Library Consortium with a price increase, raising the cost for a year of the Providence Journal archived editions on line to $80,000 for 1 year. The RI Library Consortium couldn't afford it especially since they would have been getting less content for a higher price so no more archived Providence Journal on line.

You might try contacting the RI State Archives. They are short staffed but can do a limited look-up, most usually two items per request. At the least you might establish if the person you are looking for was alive past 1958 by asking for a death look-up. Deaths up to and including 1958 will be at the Archives.

Rhode Island State Archives
337 Westminster Street
Providence, Rhode Island 02903
Telephone: (401) 222-2353
Fax: (401) 222-3199
Email: reference@sec.state.ri.us
Web: www.state.ri.us/archives/ ~~website is poorly designed and pretty much useless from a genealogy point of view.
Open to the public Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

If you post the person's name, spouse's name, children's names, individuals' birth years approximate or actual & locations of birth and anything else you know, someone might be able to find something on Ancestry.

One of the things Ancestry does have are city directories for the various cities & towns. Not all years are covered and not all municipalities have the same scope of years covered but you could get lucky.

People might also be able to check the trees at Ancestry for some matches if they have all the names associated with the person you're looking for.

The only thing the Providence Public Library / Reference Services would be able to help you with would be an obit IF you had a month and year for a death & the obit appeared in the Providence Journal which the PPL has on microfilm back to issue 1 in the 1800's.

Providence Public Library Reference Services
150 Empire Street
Providence, Rhode Island 02903
Phone:401-455-8005.
Main number is 401-455-8000.
http://www.provlib.org/default.html
Email at pplref@provlib.org

Hopefully, ProQuest will come to it's senses, lower the price and reinstate the content they were planning to take out because at present, without the power of a search engine, hunting in the Providence Journal archived editions by hand on the microfilms would be next to impossible.

Re: Current newspapers

The actual Projo site owned/run by Belo Corp., the parent company of the Providence Journal, runs the current issues of the newspaper and archives back only a limited time...30 days, I believe.

Given the time span you mention, what you are probably thinking of is the ProQuest site which is totally different in ownership & scope from the newspaper's own home site.

The "PRO" part of both names no doubt causes confusion however it's only a coincidence.

Before ProQuest decided to raise their prices & decrease content, it carried archived issues of the Providence Journal from Dec 1983 up to current issues that were available to patrons of RI libriaries - accessible with the bar code on the backs of the library cards.

As previously posted, a reduction in funding for RI Libraries coupled with ProQuest's ill timed combination price increase with a decrease in content lead directly to the RI Library Consortium not renewing the ProQuest service for this year.

I don't know if individuals can subscribe to ProQuest. Looking at their site, it seems that the ProQuest service is geared to libraries/institutions "ProQuest's family of brands provides electronic and microform information products and services to academic, school, public, corporate, and government libraries around the world."

I couldn't find anything about subscriptions for individuals.

http://www.proquest.com/en-US/products/default.shtml

Not sure if this is any help, but I think she is listed in the 1900 census with a last name indexed as Hadican in Kent county RI, born Jul 1893, with her family, father is Michael, born 1855, mother's name Jenne? 38 MA, siblings are Walter J, Sarah, Mary, David, and Edward. In the 1910 census they are in Providence RI, here mother's name is Mabel, father is Michael, and only she and younger brother Edward are still at home. In the same district in 1910 is Louis H. Meyer 54 Germany, wife Anna b. Germany, along with their kids and a Herbert W, age 20, and Hannah Schube? 67, Germany, listed as mother in law to Louis.

I could not find much on the Haddington family in 1920 for certain.

I am not related.

Here you go::

1930 Providence, R.I. Census

Edward J. Moran, age 31, married 6 years, born R.I. and parents in Ireland. He's a sign painter
Victoria R. Moran, wife, age 28, born N.Y., father Michigan, mother Canada
Emmett B. Dodge, father-in-law, age 79, born Michigan and his parents in the U.S.A.. He's a partner in sign painting.

R.I. took State Census' on the "5" years, but 1930 is the last Federal Census available at this time.

There was a fire, and the majority of the 1890 Census was destroyed.

Pretty sure this is the correct family in 1900::

1900 Providence, R.I. Census
Everett B. Dodge, born March 1851, Michigan, father born Michigan, mother born England. Married about 1880, and he's a proprietor in a hotel.
Jennie E. Dodge, wife, born Apr 1860, Canada, father born Scotland, mother in Ireland.

1910 East Providence, R.I. Census
Emmet B. Dodge, age 58, born Michigan, father Michigan, mother England. He's a sign painter.
Jane E. Dodge, wife, age 49, born Canada, father Scotland, mother Canada. Immigrated 1880, married 30 years, gave birth to 1 child who is still living.

1920 East Providence, R.I. Census
Emmet Dodge, age 68, widow, owns a shop-enameler
Victoria Dodge, single, age 18, born Ny, father Mich., mother Canada. She's a shop worker in a paint shop.

Sorry about that!! Guess all the names matched so perfectly that I forgot to double check her birth date.

I just checked the West Warwick City Directories on Ancestry, and found John B. and Mary St Germaine in the 1940 book, which is the last one they have on their site.

I also found J.B. St Germain, born 1871 and died March 31, 1956 on this site::
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rigenweb/cemetery/cemetery...

The code WW014 on the right means he is buried at St Josephs Cemetery on Gough St in West Warwick.

If you'd like his death record, you can email The Archives at::

reference@sec.state.ri.us
