Looking for info on these 3 sisters, daughters of Ernst Olof Engstrom and Jennie Mellqvist (Raadlund). I have the info for the parents but cannot find anything about the girls after 1940. Elizabeth doesn't even appear in 1930 census unless she married and I don't have the spouse's name. I am doing this for a friend whose mother was another sister, Doris, who died when my friend was little so she never knew the family. Any help will be greatly appreciated. These women were born in Rhode Island in the early 1900's. Thank you, lilliangourd@yahoo.com

Need information on Herminie Turcotte wife of Theotime Turcotte. They were in Central Falls RI in the 1890's. Her son Albert Raymond was in my great grandfather's home before he was four years old. I would like to find out why he came there at such a young age and what happened to his mother.

Do you have Ancestry.com?

I found the census, WWI Draft Registration form, naturalization, and potential Swedish birth index reference for Ernst Olof Engström.

I also do research in Swedish records so I will consult with someone from their list and see what else I need before I embark on finding images of the Swedish records.

Does your friend understand how the patronymic naming system works? That's what everyone who has Scandinavian ancestors must deal with and thoroughly understand or none of it will make any sense. They also have three extra vowels in their alphabet. [Iceland and the Faroe Islands still use the patronymic naming system, but late 19th, early 20th century Sweden, Norway, and Denmark went to permanent surnames or family names by law. Sometimes people in larger coastal cities adopted a family name that was passed down, but for the most part the records were kept using first name, patronymic name, farm name. The farm name was NOT a permanent surname until they adopted permanent surnames or moved to the US and had to adopt a surname to fit in. It was more of an address and if a person moved from the birth farm, the farm/location name changed, too.

I will send you the images I have found off-line since you provided your email address.

Best Wishes,
Bev

The city of Pawtucket is located in Providence County.

I'm finding your family on the 1925 RI State census on Family Search:

James, Bertha, Etta & Doris with a Herrick Lowe, Lodger, 22y b. England, alien.

If you've not registered with familysearch.org, you'll have to create a user name & password - free - in order to view this image:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12163-55261-67?...

As is also found on the 1920 census, on this census James claims to have naturalized. I believe at this point in time the rule was still that the wife & minor children were automatically naturalized when the man became a citizen. On these 2 censuses, Bertha & children are also listed as naturalized.

There are two places to check for a naturalization record that I know of: Supreme Court, Judicial Records Center, 5 Hill St, Pawtucket, RI 02860; Ph. 401-721-2640 or 2641. You'll want to speak with Andrew B. Smith, Clerk Judicial Records Center.

If there's no record in Pawtucket, then try the NARA Northeast Region, Boston Federal Records Center, 380 Trapelo Road, Waltham, MA 02452-6399; Reference Services: 781 663-0131; Addy: waltham.reference@nara.gov

1915 RI State Census:

James, Bertha Hetty & Doris.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-12345-11161-0-76?cc...

I didn't find any matches in the 1905 RI State Census so James, Bertha & Hetty/Etta either weren't yet in RI or they managed to avoid being counted.

12 Sep 1918, This is the link to James' WWI draft registration. He gave his DOB as 1 Sep 1874, naturalized citizen, machinist with American Textile finishing Machine Co in Pawtucket.

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

These are links to the Pawtucket City directory. At first I thought we were sunk since, in the time period from when I found James for certain in 1925 thru to 1930, Ancestry only has directories 1925, a gap, then 1928 but it turned out, I didn't need to look beyond 1928.

Information for directories was usually collected the year before so for 1925 the info would have been collected in 1924 and for 1928 it would have been collected in 1927.

James with wf Bertha is where expected in the 1925 directory but by the 1928 directory, Bertha is listed as the widow of James, so one can infer that James died sometime between 20 Apr 1925 when he was enumerated for the RI census and sometime in 1927 when the info for the 1928 directory was most likely collected.

Deaths in RI may be found in two places, at the city level & at the state level.

I'd try the state level first: RI State Archives, 337 Westminster St, Providence, RI 02903
Ph: 401-222-2353 Addy: statearchives@sos.ri.gov

You can also get Doris' birth record from RI Archives since she was born more than 100 yrs ago.

A marriage record for Hetty/Etta wouldn't be available to you unless you're a direct descendant because of the privacy laws. If you do qualify, you'll need at minimum, month, year & place & it'll cost $20; available from the City of Pawtucket - assuming that's where she married or the RI Dept of Health, Office of Vital Records, Cannon Bldg, 3 Capitol Hill, Providence, RI 02908; Ph/robo message: 401-222-2811.

The 1928 Pawt. Directory gives one more vital bit of information on Bertha: "Rem to New York City" which is why you're having so much trouble locating your Martin family in Pawtucket, RI after the 1920 census.

Pawtucket Directories:
1925 - http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/BookView.aspx?dbid=8778&am...=

1928 - http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/BookView.aspx?dbid=8778&am...=

With NYC, you're somewhat in luck assuming Bertha stayed put down there. NYC Vitals are searchable at http://stevemorse.org/ Bride index goes to 1937 & deaths go to 1948. It wasn't out of the ordinary for the man to come over first, get settled and/or send money home for the passage/steam ship tix costs for the rest of his family.

This James was a miner although the later James was a machinist, however his being a miner to start is consistent with the 1901 Brit census. It also wasn't unusual for men to change careers.

Depature for Philidelphia, PA on 24 Aug 1904:

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

Arrival Philly, PA - Bertha & Hetty; SS Haverford, Nov x, 190 >blank<; going to Westmorland Co, PA:

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/BookView.aspx?dbid=8769&am...

James arrival Philly, PA. Arrival date of 4 Sep 1904 fits nicely with the above departure from Liverpool & this James is also a miner:

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

I don't know whether you also have the Brit censuses or Bertha's maiden so I did a search at FreeBMD for the marriage & birth.

I searched for James & Bertha's marriage & found this:
Sept Qtr 1895; Martin, James & Slack, Bertha; Ashton Registration Dist, V 8d, Pg 738.

The Ashton Reg. Dist. includes Ashton under Lyne so this is almost certainly them.

A search for Hetty's birth yeilded Mar Qtr 1898, Martin Hetty, Ashton, V 8d Pg. 496

http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

The only Brit census they would appear on was 1901 which revealed that so far, Hetty appeared to be the only child, James was indeed a miner - coal miner to be specific, both James & Hetty are listed as b. Lanc, Aston under Lyne and Bertha is listed as b. Lanc, Hurst.

With Bertha's maiden, knowing where in Lanc. each was born and approx. birth years, you can find James & Bertha in the earlier Brit censuses as well as finding them & others in their families at Free BMD back as far as Jul 1837/Sept Qtr 1837 when registration of BMD started in England.

1901 Brit Census link: http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=view&r=an&dbid=...

Hi everyone. i'm looking for the Parents of Jeremiah Kane. he was born in 1836 in Ireland, and he immigrated to the united states in 1857, settling in the stillwater section of Smithfield, Rhode island. He married Johanna Ryan, b. 1847 in Tipperary, Ireland. He died in 1919 and is buried in Pawtucket, RI. I have looked on a lot of RI state census documents as well as national census documents, and I have not been able to locate his parent's names or his birthplace, they all simply listed that he is from ireland. Can anyone help?

I found Isaac in several census, from 1905 to 1940 and he was a boarder living in various households, and single, in all of them. His World War I Draft Registration Card says his nearest relation is his brother, Private Joseph Bell of Camp Mills, L.I. (Long Island). Isaac died in 1945 and is buried in Brayton Cemetery in Warwick, R.I. There's a photo of his stone at findagrave.com

As far as his father living in Newport, the only Isaac Bell I could find was listed in the Summer Newport Directory with his address listed as New York , and he was listed as a jr.

Mr Bell, was from Northern Ireland, and I believe he was Isaac Bell, the Second. His father may have been in Newport. I am not sure why he was a lodger with my mother and her parents, Sam and Ann Woodhead. Would anyone know about the Bell family and what may have happened to Isaac. This would be around the1920-1930's. That house was on Church Street next to the bay. Thank you
Ruth Beck

Since you have Jeremiah's death year, email or contact The Archives and ask for his parents names and county of birth, which should be listed on his death record. I'm pretty sure they'll do this at no charge. Finding the County in Ireland is often difficult, but if it isn't on his death record, you could post another request, asking for an obituary lookup in the Providence newspaper.

http://sos.ri.gov/archives/

Welcome. The name also appears in Abstract of Wills, Admins and Guardianships, NY State 1782-1835 in a will dated 1821 as well as in The Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, NY, Vol.1-7. Vol.5: Pg.256 mentions several Gardners, including Sullivan. Not sure if you have seen these. Let me know if interested.
dmct@verizon.net

Not sure. Try familysearch.com. They usually have tons of free census, birth and death records. Type in Harry Titus, his birthplace, and his spouses' name, and something is bound to turn up. You can even try to search for marriage records. That's how I found a lot of people on my tree.

I need to be sure there really is a lack of records on them. I really appreciate your checking that out for me! There are absolutely no records previous to Sr. Marriage to whites put them on the map.
Further on in this thread you mention that you are trying to find a town, Pouriot, in Tarnow Poland.

I am a retired librarian. You should contact a large central library in your area, explain your problem, and ask if they have a gazeteer. A gazeteer is an annotated dictionary of place names around the world. It's possible that you have the name slightly misspelled and don't know it. It's also possible, since this place is in Poland, that it is now located in a neighboring country and has a different name entirely. For example, Gdansk, Poland, used to be Danzig, Germany. See if the library has a historical atlas to help you figure out former geographic boundaries.

Now that you have a birthplace and at least an approximate date, you can contact the RI Archives and see if they have a birth certificate: sos.ri.gov/archives/
Sometimes they find other people with the same surnames in the area and will give you those.

Five of the RI State Censuses are on line at familysearch.org & are indexed as well as having the images available.

The most frustrating thing about RI State Censuses is that just the one year EVERYONE most needs, 1892, was MIA when the censuses were microfilmed & is still, to this day, missing. Those optimists among us keep hoping that someday, someone digging around in the stored records will stumble on the 1892 census schedules.

Fortunately, the 5 censuses w/images on line at familysearch.org are indexed so may be searched.

However, in some instances due to poor penmanship or an odd style of script, the name gets indexed other than what it actually is so searching doesn't yield a desired result. i.e. I had the "Wilson" surname indexed as "Hillson" thanks to an enumerator who used a fine tipped pen & an excessive amount of fancy curlicues & flourishes.

In these instances one has to browse through the images. For those instances, it's useful to know how each census year was recorded. Below I've given a description of what you'll find.

To access the images in this collection of state censuses as well as some images in other collection, one will have to register with a user name & *groan* another password to remember but it's free & if you're going to be working sequential days, you've the option of staying signed-in for 2 weeks.

1885 - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1794115

Ledger style book with the only organization being that the schedules are grouped by gender & all surnames of the same initial letter are together so one needs to check district & family numbers as well as the given number in family to insure you've found everyone in the family.

1905 - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1542866

These are 2 sided forms & grouped by gender, one form per individual. Then within a surname, grouped by ED#, then by visitation number so one must make sure the visitation numbers match for an individual to be considered a part of the family household one's looking at. Those in a settled area i.e. village/town/city will also have a street addy which helps insure you're looking at people from the same house/household.

1915 - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1532188

Usual style of census schedule we're all familiar with on a page format with family head & household members all together.

1925 - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1532195

Usual style of census schedule we're all familiar with on a page format with family head & household members all together.

1935 - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1529126

Computer punch cards, one card per individual & not grouped by family but alphabetical by given name so it's prudent to check addresses given on the cards & census tract # to be sure you've got a member of the family you're looking at.

For the moment, 1865 & 1875 along with indexes for each, are available only on film.

Yes, RI did some censuses on the half decades from 1865 (I think) up until 1935. Check out rihs.org, the RI HIstorical Society web site for more info on what is available and how. The 1885 is particularly valuable because the 1890 Fed. censuses were almost all destroyed by fire.
