I recently came across this family photo of a man identified as John J. Oates Excercise Captain of the Irish Volunteers. The photo was taken in Rhode Island. This uniform doesn't match anything I've seen on-line, but possibly resembles the uniform described as the one used by the Fenians to invade Canada.

Can anyone help me with this?
