I read the West. Sun in RIHS and all there was was a tiny brief mention that she died in her bed in Avondale. I'm well aware of the R.I. side but you can almost throw a stone across the river at that point. Nothing in Narr. Times either. She was in the Pawcatuck directory to 1908. Perhaps she was working in Avondale, lived across the river.

Hi!
Her death should be in The Westerly Sun. It is on microfilm in The Westerly Library. Did you check with the Rhode Island State Archives? Was she a member of The Narragansett Indian Tribe? The Westerly Library is undergoing work and access to microfilm may be impossible?
Avondale is only on Westerly side.
Regards,
Scott Bill Hirst
scottbillhirst@yahoo.com

The Stonington Town Clerk's Office, located in The Stonington Town Hall, would have death records. Avondale is a small community, located in Westerly, R.I. Death records were issued in the state where the person died, so I'm surprised you didn't find her record in R.I.

I would also try the Narr.Times...because there were many Hazards in So.Kingstown,RI....and poss. relatives of Caroline. I do not have the email add. for the library but I know they would look up on request. I knew a Mary Perry that ran a small restruant and ice cream shop in charlestown, near the Indian Church in the 40's/50's. I think the Native Amrican Center in Hope Valley might be able to give you some info. Just a few ideas...
www.Tourjee.net

She died in Avondale age 88 4-18-1908 with barely a mention in the Westerly paper. Not in We. or R.I. death records. She was a Black/Indian lady of the Bent family, widow of Perry Hazard of Stonington where they resided. Is Avondale on both sides of the river? Could the record be in Stonington?

I was in hope someone might have researched a Whitehorn and prehaps listed a little Martha. What I am seeking is the father of Othaniel Brown. There are other Othaniel Browns in RI but none of the dates work with this Othaniel Brown. Thank you for the information.

Hello,

According to the book, _South Kingstown, Rhode Island Tax Lists, 1730-1799_, there were five Whitehorns (various spellings) in South Kingstown in the eighteenth century: Clarke, James, James Jr., John, and Peck. Unfortunately, there is no extant tax list for 1790, but the near years of 1786 and 1791. James was there in 1786 and in 1791. James Jr. was there in 1791 but not 1786. Therefore it is possible that either the elder or younger James could have been the father of your Martha, if she had been born in South Kingstown.

Othaniel Brown (all spellings) did not appear on any of the eighteenth century South Kingstown tax lists that are included in this book. If he were born in 1790 or a few years earlier, he would have been too young to be on the tax list. Do you have the name of his father?

I believe that an article about the Whitehorn family appeared in the NYG&B _Record_ a few years ago; it mentioned individuals from South Kingstown.

Judi Watson

Boca Raton, Fla. - Marion Wilcox Korab Federer, 95, passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side in her home in Boca Raton, Fla. Marion was a true Connecticut Yankee; descended from Thomas Wheeler, a founder of the Old Road Church, and the Stephen Wilcox branch of Wilcox Park in Westerly. She will be missed by her many friends and family in Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, and Texas.
She spent her early years in Plainfield in the old Tiffany Homestead on Rte. 12, attending the old Plainfield Academy and Plainfield High School prior to eventually embarking on a career as a social worker with the Town of Plainfield and the State of Connecticut, Norwich office.

Marion enjoyed summers at the house she and Joe built at Latimer Point in Stonington. After her retirement, to avoid the cold winters, she headed south to be with her daughter and her many friends. Marion was always proud of her family and loved to be with them. She never failed to give the current weather report when apart from them.

Marion was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph J. Korab, a "legend" at the Town Hall in Plainfield, her son, Jan W. Korab, and her husband, Charles A. Federer, founder of Sky and Telescope magazine. With Charles, she traveled extensively, discovering a world she thought she would never be able to see.

She is survived by her daughter, Joan A.K. Iler; her daughter-in-law, Lyn C. Korab; her six grandchildren, Derek J., Jared D., and Christopher J. Korab, David C. Iler, Jennifer K. Martinez, and Linisa K. Harrison; and five great-grandchildren; as well as Charlie's son, Tony and daughter, Bar, their children and grandchildren.

Memorial gifts are to be made to the First Congregational Church of Plainfield.

A celebration of her life will be held in July in Central Village.

Published in The Day on 5/23/2009 www.theday.com

Scott, what I have found is that the probate records were the ones that were copied. They run from about 1704-1723 and abstracts can be found in old copies of the RI Genealogical Register. The wills themselves are in the Sk Town Council and Probate Books.
Anyone with an ancestor who lived in what later became SK in the period from 1704-1723 is very fortunate because many of the originals in NK suffered severe damage in a fire. I was able to transcribe an ancestor's will that was in near perfect condition from 1704 in SK but the original in NK is very tough to read. I also have to tell you that the clerks in SK are much more helpful and knowledgeable than the ones in NK should you want to go in person.
Vital records were not copied, nor have I seen copies of land records from that period, only the wills. it may be that I have not had to find a land record in that period but I have not seen any abstarcts from that period.
I usually use my other email addy, which is uriramfan@cox.net as opposed to this one if you want to contact me off line. I do not come to the message boards very often.

so sorry for the lack of information, I am not an expert with genealogy.

the geographical area of my friends lineage is schuyler county, new york. she also tells me of relatives in steuben county, little place named wayne village.

I read on another message board about a Solomon and Edith who married in Pennsylvania, .. no marriage dates. Solomon, if the same fellow, was raised in an orphanage for children who lost their parents during the civil war.

i wonder if this is the same guy,>? and who were his parents >?

also in here i found Nicholas Utter from sweden, a soldier, who eventually made his way to stonington, connecticut where he died.

if this is your line, it is very interesting indeed, ..

You didn't ask a question. Who is her earliest known Utter ancestor for whom she has dates and location? Without knowing her questions, it is difficult to answer. My personal email is wmewrght (note there is no "i"). The domain is hal-pc.org.

But a query on the list may bring better responses.

Bill Wright

Again you give no dates or location and leave your query to guesses. The names are unusual enough that a google search only returned 12 hits. This one seems to be the best fit.

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.new...

I am traveling at the moment. My Utter notebook is at home. It focuses on the Rhode Island branch of the family, so I am not sure if I can be of much help with the Pennsylvania Utters.

I am also a member of the Computer Genealogy Society of Sweden. I searched their database for Nicholas Utter and had no hits. Thee were over 1,000 for the Utter surname and over 150 between the years 1600-1650. But you are two centuries removed from the immigrant.

Bill

They are a mess, and the reuse of similar names among the different decendents also complicates it.

Do you know where I can find the kind of records which would show transfer of slaves from household to household? I believe that showing where Primas lived may be one of the best ways to sort out this family. There was also a slave named Cuff that J. John Smith freed upon his death in 1782.

So far, I have a few good possibilities, but just no firm answer about where the family line originated.

I've seen this family in the One World Tree database and they certainly seem to be a good fit. A missing piece would be if Jeremiah and Mary Smith had a son named Ebenezer. In the OWT database, this family does have an Ebenezer but it looks like maybe the wrong person has been associated with Jeremiah and Mary.

I have heard second hand that an Ebenezer Smith deeded a slave to a widow named Margaret Smith in 1722/3. The slave's name was Primas and he appeared in my 6th great grandfather's house in the 1774 RI Census (J. John Smith).

The family you mentioned would make sense because the father's name was Jeremiah and the grandfather's name was John--which could explain the origin of J. John Smith's name.

Right now, I have a great story but am just looking for some records to confirm it. Do you know of any other children that Ephraim and Margaret Smith had?

I am trying to track down an Ephriam Smith with ties to Prudence Island and South Kingston.

In the 1774 Census, J. John Smith (my 6th Gr. Grandfather) had a slave named Primus Smith in the household. A fellow researcher of the family found that a Primus was deeded from Ebenezer Smith to his widowed sister-in-law Margaret in 1722/3. Her husband was Ephriam Smith.

If you have any information on the Smiths from Prudence Island, South Kingston, or (by the 19th Century) North Kingston, please let me know.

Ephriam Smith
+ Margaret
(I don't have a direct tie that these were J. John's parents)
- J. John Smith d. 1782
+ ?
- John Jr.
- Thomas
- Marcy
- Amos (b. 1755 d. 1835)
+ ? Smith (d. abt 1830)
+ Ester Allen (b. 1792 d. 1867)
- Jeremiah Smith (b. 1825 d. 1898)
+ Eliza Northup (b. 1837 d. 1870)
I'm trying to help someone in the UK who is trying to find a cousin for her 96yr old father.

this is all she knows:
Harry DOUGLAS and his wife Fanny (nee BROADBENT bn. 1878 in Leeds, UK). Harry was a carpet designer. They emigrated to USA in early 1900s.
They had a son Lewis, born approx. 1913, who in turn had a son "Buddy" born approx. 1943.
They lived in Rhode Island in the 1950s.
She's hoping Buddy is still alive and her father can talk to him

thanks for all of your help!
Julie in CA

Researchers: Providence Public Library Shortens Hours of Operation

For those of you who may be considering a trip to RI to do a little research:

The Board of Trustees for the Providence Public Library, in the face of the loss of funding from the City of Providence and shrinking revenues from their endowment investments have instutited the following changes effective with the fiscal year beginning 1 July ~

Seven branches...which I think is all of them...of the PPL will now, essentially, belong to the City of Providence. The PPL is leasing the buildings to the City for $1 and donating all the books and materials in them to the City. (Hopefully, any important records, documents, photos and other materials have been moved to the main library where they will be preserved & available to all researchers rather than being a temptation to the politicians as a possible source of revenue through the sale of them.) This arrangement is as an alternative to what the PPL Board of Trustees was originally considering which had been to close the branches entirely.

The main Library at Empire Street remains as it was. However, the operating hours have changed dramatically. Now, from September until mid May, the Library will be closed on Wednesdays. It will only be open for 5 hours on Fri & Sat and for 4 hours on Sunday.

Nothing was mentioned in this morning's newspaper regarding exactly what the opening and closing times will be each day at the PPL or the now City owned branches.
My family is descended from John Lewis through Samuel Lewis. The best information I have located is that Samuel was born in 1671/2 or 1677 in Westerly and died August 5, 1734 or Jan. 1738/39 in Richmond, RI, approximately 17 miles NE of Westerly. He is buried in Westerly. He married Joanna Crandall in 1695. Their children included my ancestor, John/Jonathan Lewis, born 1690/95, who married Anna Clarke in about 1720. They lived in Westerly.

I am looking for info on the family of Willett H. Watson (or sometimes his name is listed as Willard H.) born in Exeter, RI on Dec. 31, 1829. On his death certificate his parents are listed as John Watson and Betsey Carey. Any info on these folks would be much appreciated.

Other information for Willett/Willard:
His wife's name was Jane (maiden name possibly Young) and he died in Middleborough, MA on June 9, 1909.

Thanks,
Steve

Jeremiah and Mary (Gereardy) Smith had sons John, Ephraim, and Ebenezer, and daughters Sarah, Mary, and Deliverance. This Ebenezer may have been born around 1676, married an Abigail, and was buried in South Kingstown 9 October 1743. There are lots of Ephraim, Ebenezer, and John Smiths in South Kingstown records, and I have been unable to sort all of them into families. The list of the children of Ephraim Sr. that I gave in my previous post is, as far as I can tell, complete. It is derived from NK vital records and SK vr, tcr, and land records.
