Westerly Drowning Death of Five or Six Men, 1726

My 6g grandfather was Judah or Jonah WORDEN, 1695-1726. Born in Massachusetts, father Peter WORDEN, Judah/Jonah was said to have drowned 9 Dec 1726, Westerly, Rhode Island. I am unable to locate the story of that drowning. All I have found thus far is, "Jonah was drowned along with five other men." Surely there is more to the story than that.

I would appreciate any help you might offer. Thank you.

Try checking with the Westerly Sun as this paper covered the Westerly area during the time frame.

Dear "SBailey,"

The only suggestion I can make is for you to check the volumes of Arnold's Vital Record of Rhode Island that contain newspaper abstracts. Some of those newspapers MAY have been publishing in the timeframe you are checking.

Incidentally, you can ignore the suggestion regarding the Westerly Sun. The Utter family started publishing that particular paper in the last decade of the nineteenth century, so it would be useless for your interest in the first half of the eighteenth century.

Hope the above helps! Good luck!
