Soldier's Orphanage in Newport Rhode Island

I am searching for an soldier's orphanage in Rhode Island in 1873. Three children were left orphaned there at that time.
Their names are: Elizabeth McChesney b 1862 Glasgow Scotland
Jeannie/Jennie McChesney b. abt 1868 in Rhode Island (no record of birth found as yet)
and Franklin Redsman McChesney b. abt 1870s

Their father and mother, Alexander and Elizabeth (Forsyth/Forsythe) McChesney lived in Glasgow Scotland, and immigrated to America in 1864. Alexander McChesney immediately (I understand from a letter by great aunt Nellie)) enlisted in the Civil War fighting for the Union side. While serving he contracted TB. Elizabeth died about 1872-73, and Alexander had 3 young children. The government advised him to put them in a soldier's orphanage. He returned to Scotland in 1873 and died there 12 weeks later.

If I can find the orphanage, I believe I can find the children and what happened to them.

Hope to hear from someone soon, Grace McChesney Boerner

Rhoda Lake married Anson Grinnell/Tiverton

Rhoda Lake married Anson Grinnell on Nov.25, 1784 in Tiverton, RI. They were married by the Baptist minister Peleg Burroughs. Rhoda died in Jan. 1792 and Burroughs preached the sermon at her funeral. (Burrough's diary mentions both events, but doesn't say anything about her family.)

All members of the Lake family in Tiverton have one ancestor. I'm confident that Rhoda is a member of this family. However, I cannot find any record which indicates which of the Lakes was her father and/or her mother's name.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

I too am searching for burned records in RI, in the later 1800's. It doesn't seem that anyone statewide has a list of what records were burned, and when. Someone else posted that the North kingstown, RI had a fire in the later 1800's and birth certs, land, probate, court records, etc. burned badly. It does not say what the building was the burned though.

Re: Benjamin TAYLOR, b. 1761 son of Wm. TAYLOR & Elizabeth GRAY

Good grief, do you know how many Benjamin Taylors there are? Especially in Rhode Island! I've been doing my family tree for over 30 years, including Taylors, and it isn't easy. The first thing to do is forget about what other trees you've seen. Trace your own tree. Start with family members with the last name you're tracing, see if you can find their birth records, marriage records, etc. Then go to census records, and look up people with the name you're looking for in the city and state they lived in. When you find them as ccildren, then check 20 years later, or so to find THEIR families, and then check 20 years later to find the children with THEIR families. Maybe if you do it that way, you'll find the line that connects to yours. And don't worry if the wife's name is different from the one you have. The mortality rate was high back then, and it's entirely possible your ancestor was married several times. Good luck, and contact me if you hit a snag!!

Re: Benjamin TAYLOR

I have found additional circumstantial evidence to support the conclusion that Benjamin Taylor who married Elizabeth Grinnell is the same Benjamin Taylor who moved to Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., then to Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York:

- In the book "Charts and Chronicles of Mathew Grennelle's Descendants" compliled by E. W. Grinnell, it is stated that Caleb Jenckes Grinnell, born 1770 in Little Compton, RI, was living in Johnstown, Montgomery Co., New York in 1793 where he married his wife Mary Seymour.

It is important to note that Caleb married his wife AFTER moving to Montgomery County, New York. This suggests that he had left Little Compton for Montgomery County New York for some reason other than having in-laws there.....

In fact, it turns out this Caleb J. Grinnell was the BROTHER of the Elizabeth Grinnell who married Banjamin Taylor, son of William Taylor and Deborah Gray.

It is plausible that Caleb came to Montgomery County with his sister and her husband.

Assuming that is true, why did the Taylors leave Little Compton and Prudence Island to go to Amsterdam? There is no identified marriage between a Taylor and an Allen or Pearce yet....

However recall that in 1790, a Peter Taylor fitting the age of the one by that name living next to Benjamin Taylor at Amsterdam and Brownville was living on Prudence Island next to the James Allen family that moved to Brownville.

In another book, "Some Prudence Island Allens with a Few Connected Families, Vol. 1" by Devere Allen (1947) it is stated that James Allen (hsb. of Martha Pearce) of Prudence Island was granted 100 acres of land two miles from the present village of Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., New York (then called Veddersburg) as payment for his service in the Rhode Island troops that supported Ethan Allen in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga.

100 acres is a lot of land, and virtually every one of James' children left Prudence Island to come live on that land in Amsterdam at one time or another. One of those children, Martha, moved to Johnstown (same place Caleb Grinnell lived). Later on in the early 1800s, two other children who came to Amsterdam, Cyrus and Caleb Allen, moved to Brownville, Jefferson County, New York.

At the same time, Benjamin Taylor left Amsterdam and showed up in Brownville too. And so did Peter Taylor.

Whatever the relationship was between Benjamin Taylor and the James Allen family, it is clearly evident that Benjamin Taylor followed the Allen family first to Amsterdam (probably for land) and then finally to Brownville.

Related, it is worth noting that Samuel Allen, the grandson of James Allen and Martha Pearce, who died in 1814 at age 18, is buried in the same family farm burial yard in Brownville as Richard Taylor and his wife Rachel, whom one researcher alleges were the parents of Juliana Taylor who married the Cyrus Allen, the son of John & Martha who died in 1799 in Rhode Island while out at sea.

I don't have a copy of that book but rec'd a copy of the page with the entry for Mary Russell (it just mentions her name, no other info.) and right below it is the infant born on 9-13-1894 and died on 9-26-1894. I've looked everywhere for a copy of that book, scoured the internet but the only availability is to order photo copies for around $250. I think I'll keep looking.
Thanks again.

Thank you for responding to my query, especially with those great clippings! That Deborah, wife of William Taylor is the one I am proposing is the mother of Bemjamin Taylor who moved to New York.

The obituary for the Elizabeth, widow of Benjamin, looks like it is not about Elizabeth Grinnell, whom I believe accompanied Benjamin Taylor to New York, because Elizabeth Grinnell was born in 1765, whereas the woman in this clipping was born around 1747.

Does the source you are using have anything on the death of a Benjamin Taylor in 1803? That's the year some say the son of William Taylor and Deborah Gray died, but I see no evidence of that.

Also, there are two things I forgot to mention in my original post:

- Peter was also the name of William Taylor's father, so it was definitely a family name.
- There is no death record that I can find for Elizabeth Grinnell, wife of Benjamin Taylor, which leaves open the possibility she did not die in Rhode Island, which would be expected if she and Benjamin are the same couple that moved to New York.

Thanks again!
Mark

WoW ! lot of info. to take in, but I was looking through some old RI newspapers and several things popped out. First being a store owned by a Peter Grinnell & William Taylor during early 1800's and the partnership ended in April 1809 and the store start back in May 1809 as Peter Grinnell & Son.

I have seen several obits for a Benjamin Taylor in RI but the year doesn't match.... I did copy some of the things, and will be happy to look into more articles if you want.

Benjamin TAYLOR, b. 1761 son of Wm. TAYLOR & Elizabeth GRAY

Hi,

I am trying to ascertain whether the Benjamin TAYLOR born 8 January 1761 at Little Compton, Newport Co., RI to William TAYLOR and Deborah GRAY might be the same Benjamin Taylor who died sometime in the late 1820's in the Town of Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, after a brief stay in Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., New York.

The Benjamin Taylor born 1761 at Little Compton married Elizabeth GRINNELL at Little Compton on 23 December 1784 according to vital records.

There is on record the death of a Benjamin Taylor at Hopkinton, RI on 11 August 1803 and I have seen several online family trees that assume this is the son of William & Deborah. I think the reason why researchers have made this assumption is because William Taylor did not mention his son Benjamin in his will -- this could mean Benjamin was dead, but it could also mean Benjamin no longer lived in the area so there was no point leaving him a legacy as he wouldn't be able to claim it.

In fact, I have seen evidence that the Benjamin who died in 1803 in Hopkinton was actually the son of Humphrey TAYLOR and Martha WOOD who lived at Hopkinton; and that Benjamin was married to a different woman, not Elizabeth GRINNELL.

So that leaves Benjamin Taylor, husband of Elizabeth Grinnell and son of William & Deborah unaccounted for in the death records of Rhode Island to my knowledge.

So....

In Jefferson County, New York, a Benjamin Taylor born around the early 1760s according to census estimates shows up in the 1820 census, along with a Peter Taylor born about 1765, and a Richard Taylor born about 1751. This Benjamin Taylor's descendants reported that their father was born in Rhode Island.

Beforehand, this Benjamin Taylor was living from at least 1794 until after 1810 in Amsterdamn, Montgomery Co., New York next door to John Pearce ALLIN, who had moved there from Prudence Island, Town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, a son of James ALLEN and Martha PEARCE (who also moved from Prudence Island to Amsterdam).

James Allen and Martha Pearce had a son Cyrus Allen, born 1765 at Portsmouth, a sailor, who died in 1799. Before he died, he married Juliana A. TAYLOR, born about 1771 in Rhode Island, and they had a son named Cyrus Allen. After Cyrus Sr.'s death, Juliana married Benjamin PRYOR. Interestingly, Benjamin PRYOR and Juliana TAYLOR moved to Town of Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York as well, where they died. One online researcher has even identified Juliana as the daughter of the Richard TAYLOR born 1751 in Rhode Island who was enumerated near Benjamin in the censuses of Brownville (they cite no source however).

Add to this mix that Peter TAYLOR, aforementioned, appears in the censues of both Amsterdam and Brownville next to Bejmain Taylor. The name Peter is significant because it was the name of another son of William and Deborah. And I find two Peter Taylors, one fitting the age the man in Amsterdam and Browville, living on Prudence Island, Town of Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI, next to an ALLIN family in the 1790 census -- the same ALLIN family that ends up in Amsterdam, New York!

All of this evidence suggests that:
- there was a close relationship between Benjamin, Richard and Peter Taylor
- these Taylors were from Rhode Island
- these Taylors were closely associated to the ALLEN / ALLIN family of Prudence Island, town of Portsmouth

From what I can discover online, the Taylors of Prudence Island were from the same family as the Taylors of Little Compton. Which leads me back to my original question:

Could Benjamin Taylor of Amsterdam and Brownville be the son of William Taylor & Deborah Gray born in 1761 whose death is not recorded in Rhode Island? If they weren't his parents, then who?

Further, how are Peter and Richard related? Brothers, cousins or uncles?

I would appreciate any and all help! Including names of researchers both free or for hire that could dig into the Little Compton and Portsmouth records to answer these questions.

Thanks!
Mark

He's a Capt in the USA (Army I assume), and she's a teacher in Lincoln, R.I. Schools.

The Social Security Death Index has Clifford Chadwick born 1906, died June 1970. His social security card was issued in Massachusetts, but doesn't say where he died.

Maybe you can get more info from the 1940 census when it gets indexed.

Did John Osborn AUSTIN's Dictionary of Rhode Island families (or other title) have more than the 1887 Edition? Was the 1887 the FIRST edition? How many other editions followed the original, please?

This 1887 edition was quoted by a researcher in abt 1920, concerning Nicholas BROWN of PORTSMOUTH, RI, who titled the work "Nicholas Brown of London England". That wording is not on the page I have from Austin, so I wondered whether a subsequent Edition removed that phrase, or ??

I have spent some years trying to find Nicholas Brown's home in England, so am interested in this recent "news" from 1920. I welcome your responses, Patricia Brown

I do have the Bristol County books. Went through them page-by-page for any relevant items, and the one I'm after isn't there. Also didn't find it in Plymouth, Middlesex, Suffolk or Essex, the other plausible MA counties. Was hoping for RI, but it doesn't sound good.

Someday I'll have someone check the original RI records, but the odd date sequence is not my highest priority. Gotta find that will, or some other evidence. If I'm right that Wilbour was wrong, then my wife loses three of her four Mayflower ancestors. It is what it is, but it would be nice to know.

Thanks.

Arnolds like many transcriptions does have errors. However in his defense the LC vitals are themselves trancribed and have errors. As to the will, H.L. Rounds transcribed Bristol Co Probates in two volumes, and the 1752 will may be in Vol II 1745-1762 which I don't have. However the town was in RI by 1747. The R.I. Genealogical Register by the RIGS had a series of LC wills I think Vol 8. I don't see it in the wills volume index.

Tomlin/Brown -- Questions about Data from Arnold

A few questions about some data I found in Arnold concerning the Tomlin/Brown family. This is all in Little Compton.

1. Arnold has John Tomlin m. Mary Smith 27 Oct 1720. But their first child, Alfea, b. 15 July 1720. Certainly possible, but quite unusual. Can anyone confirm those dates? Any other thoughts? Arnold does not seem to have any other Tomlin families in which to place Alfea.

2. Arnold has John d. May 1761 - no exact date, and no other info on him. Can anyone fill in those gaps?

3. Arnold has their child Mary m. John Brown 7 Jan 1750. Is that 1749/50 or 1750/51? It looks like Arnold sometimes gives double dates, but not typically. Maybe this reflects practices of local clerks. I suppose one way to check is to review the original chronological records in RI. Anyone have any other thoughts?

4. Now, the big one, and my main interest: that John Brown. Wilbour, "Little Compton Families" has him b. 1734, son of John Brown and Sarah White. For several reasons, I don't think that's correct. (Start with the fact that he would have married at 15 or 16; it gets worse.) It has been suggested that he was a mariner from Massachusetts, with Makepeace/Ingersoll ancestry. That is very plausible -- anyone got any evidence, one way or the other?

5. I've been told that there is a will dated 4 Oct 1752, perhaps of this John Brown, that could resolve things. Can't find it in Massachusetts -- maybe Rhode Island? Is there a source available?

There is a copy of that book in the Newport Public Library. There is also a map that shows the general location of the graves. As far as I know there is no phone number for the Common Burial Ground, and the only information on the graves is from various surveys of the cemetary. Some of these are on the RI cemetary database.

There was a book, "Births 1590-1930 from Newport Common Burial Ground" by Alden G. Beaman. He copied info from gravestones and created a grid system of the cemetery.

Does anyone have this book or know where I can see a copy?

Does anyone know the phone number of the cemetery?

I am researching DUNBARs in Rhode Island, specifically the family of George Dunbar (dd 1754) and think he may have been buried there.

Some of the Dunbars are buried in BF 00526, BF 00527 and BF 528.

Perhaps I might visit the plots but wouldn't know where to find them.

Any ideas?

Thanking anyone in advance,

Brus

A revision. Eliza Perkins was not the wife of George William Johnson ... most likely she was his first cousin and was taken in by her aunt and uncle ca. 1853 (council records note this) Since my last post I was able to get the info needed on George Johnson's line ... but not Phyllis's.

Not an expert on the subject but think generally you would have to be a land owner to serve on a jury. I assume the citations are from the printed RI General Court of Trials 1671-1704. He was mentioned as from Westerly but never attended either trial as a jurist and was so fined for not serving. My only thoughts are two John Randalls. Westerly records are voluminus but indexings no longer correlate to actual book numbers and is very frustrating to research.
