Simeon and Robert Brand 1782 West Greenwich

I have been working on the Simeon Brant name. It appears to me that there were two of them. One served in the Revolutionary War and married Prudence Phelps and the other married Phebe Loetz. There are land records in West Greenwich, Rhode Island that show Simeon and Phebe selling land in 1789 to Samuel Albro. This is three years after Simeon of the Rev. War married Prudence Phelps in 1786. How could that be if they are one in the same? Also there is a land sale in 1778 from Simeon and Phebe to his "father" Robert Brand. I beleive this clearly indicates the Simeon who married Phebe was the son of Robert Brand (Sr.). The father of the other Simeon of the Rev. War may have been the son of a Simeon Brand/Brend who is found in the 1782 tax records along with Robert (Sr.). They were both over 50 years of age, which would make their births before1732. For Simeon and Phebe to have had a son by 1776 he would probably have been born about 1750. I believe Simeon of the Rev. War may have been a son of this Simeon and was born in 1758 as his Rev. War records indicate. The Simeon Brand/Brant of the Rev. War would have been too young to have owned land in 1778 and too young to be the married by 1776. I do not see how these could be one in the same. It appears these two Simeon Brand/Brant persons were cousins. I believe somone has combined these two individuals into one person. Also in the town records of West Greenwich you can find references to Robert Brand keeping the children of Simeon Brand and also people of the town were paid for doing the same. These two children are named Mason and Elias. They appear later as the brothers of Simeon Brant (b.1776) who came to Michigan in 1836 from NY. This Simeon was the son of Simeon and Phebe (Loetz) Brand/Brant. Please let me know what you think of this? I know the early records of the Brand family are sparse. Does anyone have a record of a Simeon Brand being a brother of Robert Brand Sr.?

Simeon and Robert Brand appear in the 1782 census of West Greenwich. According to the census they are both older than 50 years of age. Simeon has 2 males under 16 and a female slightly less than 50 years of age. Robert has one female under 16, one male under 16 and a female 50 years or older. Land records indicate Simeon and Phebe Brand sold land to his father, Robert Brand, in 1778 in West Greenwich. I am wondering if or how they connect to the Westerly Brand family. I would like to communicate with anyone who is researching these families.
Jamm7,

Thank you so much for the information. You have confirmed some of my guesses and provided some interesting new information. Edward F. Hand's wife Emma May (King) Hand was my great grandmother. I have been to the Brayton Cemetery with the map Tom Clarke sent to me, and I have my photos of Emma and Edward's grave, along with the graves of Charles and William King, who I believe are Emma's brothers. They were the children of James and Sarah King. I thought Sarah's maiden name was Rutledge, not Ruthleg, so that's interesting. I'll have to look into that further.

Anyway, thanks again for the info. This is a very helpful message board.

Liz

I thank you so very, very much for the Sarah Briggs information. I am pleased to learn of her date of death and age at death, and am especially happy to know that her father is reported to be William, which fact has been in contention among several of the Briggs "family" because Arnolds "Vital Records of Rhode Island" says her father is Joseph Briggs. But, in Sarah's application for widow's pension is an affadavit by Elder James Wightman which says that she is a daughter of William Briggs. Thank you som much for the confirmation.
In the 1900 census, Victor is living at Coventry, RI, with Paul & Zoe Desmarais, and he is identified as their son. Six children are listed in this family group, although Zoe has had a total of 10 children. Paul & Zoe were both born in Canada; all of the children were born in RI. The parents both immigrated in 1871. Paul is a weaver in a cotton mill; the oldest daughter also works there. You can view this census free through Heritage Quest at participating libraries.

Hi Liz,
The Warwick cemeteries book adds nothing to what you have for Edward and Emma Hand, except that they are identified as husband and wife. Buried in Section E.

One other Hand is listed in Warwick, also at Brayton. He is Bernard F. Hand, 28 Oct. 1904-1 June 1969, veteran of WWII-TEC 4, 229 Ord. Evac. Co.
In addition to names and dates the cemetery database also gives any genealogically significant data that appears on the stones, such as parents or relationships. I have a book that was published in 1997 documenting all Warwick cemeteries except three modern ones. It is estimated that Brayton has 3800 burials with just under 3000 inscribed stoned. Let me know the names you are interested in and I will do the look ups.
Tom

In 1972-1975 Mary is listed as the widow of Clarence A. Ellis. Mary is the daughter of my great uncle, Arthur Logan. She was born in Greenfield, MA in possibly the 1930s. Clarence is listed in the Polk Directory as a druggist/pharmacist. They had 5 children.

Audrey Logan Harris
Silverdale, WA
Arnold's Vital Records show that an Asa gardner served in the Revolution, first in Col. Topham's regiment (1776) and then in 1780 when he was a member of Capt. Lewis Greene's regiment. The record indicates that he was a pensioner. I am assuming the two listings are for the same man but there were hundreds of Gardiners in RI so it's possible there were two Asa's at that time.
The record in Arnold's does not provide any info such as residence, parents, spouse, etc. I would recommned that you try to find the records of the regiments if you can as well as looking for a pension record.

BOY !! Do I feel stupid, really. Thank you for your prompt and very useful reply. In Sarah's application for widow'a pension which is dated 27 Apr 1845,it is stated that she is 85 yrs old - so born 1760. Also in her application for increase in pension dated 1855, it is stated that she is 95 yrs old, again making her birth date in 1760. To cinch the matter, Elder Wightman's affadavit states that she is of North Kingston rather than E. Greenwich. This has been a case of irresponsible research and I thank you for showing me the way out - with your proper questioning attitude.
My Very Best Regards.

My 4th gr-great grandmother, Sarah Briggs was b.01 Nov 1754 at E. Greenwich and married Joseph Cory of E. Greenwich on 19 Feb 1778. Arnold, in his "Vital Records of R.I." records Sarah to be a daughter of John Briggs, however, in Sarah's application for widow's pension, is an affadavit which states that she is a daughter of William Briggs and is submitted by Elder James Wightman who married them. Does anyone have information that can reconcile the discrepancy ?

Location/alternate name of Village Cemetery in East Greenwich

I am trying to figure out what cemetery in EG could be referred to as "Village Cemetery". I found an entry in the "Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Veterans" database on Ancestry for James Lockerin, private, Company A, 4th RI Infantry. Cemetery was listed as Village Cemetery in East Greenwich, Kent County, RI. He died on 25 July 1875 and D.W. Whitney supplied the stone with the contract dated 29 M??[Mar?] 1879. I checked Bruce McGunnigle's book, but I cannot find anything for this cemetery name. I suspect that it is an alternate name for one of the other cemeteries, and I would like to verify which one. I have also checked Warwick cemeteries, but have not been able to find this. James died in EG. In his estate papers, there was also mention of a piece of real estate in the "compact" part of town. Anyone able to shed light on this?

BTW, James' last name was spelled in a number of exceedingly creative fashions: Lockery, Loughery, Loughrey, Loughry, Loughlin, Lochery, Locherin , etc...

Thanks for any help anyone can give...

Sarah Nesnow
Warwick, RI

Records for Coventry at that time are at the Coventry Town Hall. However, it was not mandatory by law for people to officially record births, marriages, and deaths until the mid-1950s, so many individuals are missing from the town records before that time. Old records of all the cities and towns have been published as the series "Vital Record of RI" by James N. Arnold, available in many libraries and also online with membership at New England Historic Genealogical Society. You could also check the RI Cemetery Database online, which lists most historical cemeteries in RI. Let me know if I can be of further help.

How do you know for sure that the Sarah Briggs who is a daughter of John in the vital records, is the same Sarah who stated that her father was William? Sarah is one of the most common names, and very possibly these are two different individuals. Another possibility is that the town clerk wrote the incorrect father's name in the vital records. Perhaps Elder Wightman wrote down the wrong name. Without personally seeing these documents, I can't offer any other explanations. However, the will of John Briggs of East Greenwich, written 26 Aug 1795, does mention a daughter Sarah, single at that time. So, if your Sarah was married in 1778, she must be a different person -- inless she divorced and resumed her maiden name.

Re: Almont M Chaffee

He is not listed with Everlena and Ludley A. Chaffee at Coventry in the 1830 US census; they are ages 60 & 54, so it is unlikely that he is their son. I can't find your younger Almont anywhere in that census, by that name. Ludley A. is actually Lindley A., oldest son of Almont L. Chaffee born Apr 1848 MA, according to the earlier census records. He is married to Sarah A. in 1870 (with one son Lindley A.), and in 1880 and 1900 he is married to Lydia A. (Short, md 11 Jan 1873), (with 7 more children including 5 additional sons). The family is living at Seekonk, MA and East Providence, RI, in these censuses. In 1910 he is a widower. It seems likely that your Almont may be a grandson of the older one. One son Harvey married Agnes; in the 1920 census he has one dtr and two step children, at East Providence (I can't find them in 1930). Son Frederick married Florence, they have 8 children in the 1930 census. A son Clifford is single in 1920. Two other places to check: his death record, and the 1925 RI census.

Researchers: Providence Public Library Shortens Hours of Operation

For those of you who may be considering a trip to RI to do a little research:

The Board of Trustees for the Providence Public Library, in the face of the loss of funding from the City of Providence and shrinking revenues from their endowment investments have instutited the following changes effective with the fiscal year beginning 1 July ~

Seven branches...which I think is all of them...of the PPL will now, essentially, belong to the City of Providence. The PPL is leasing the buildings to the City for $1 and donating all the books and materials in them to the City. (Hopefully, any important records, documents, photos and other materials have been moved to the main library where they will be preserved & available to all researchers rather than being a temptation to the politicians as a possible source of revenue through the sale of them.) This arrangement is as an alternative to what the PPL Board of Trustees was originally considering which had been to close the branches entirely.

The main Library at Empire Street remains as it was. However, the operating hours have changed dramatically. Now, from September until mid May, the Library will be closed on Wednesdays. It will only be open for 5 hours on Fri & Sat and for 4 hours on Sunday.

Nothing was mentioned in this morning's newspaper regarding exactly what the opening and closing times will be each day at the PPL or the now City owned branches.

Brayton Historical Cemetery, Warwick RI #34

Hello.

I’m new at this and have never posted before. While researching my family tree I found the Rhode Island Cemetery Database Master Index, which has been extremely helpful in locating the burial sites of some of my ancestors. I understand the full database is not available online, only at the library and historical society.

My interest is in the KING and HAND families, and according to the Master Index, many are buried at the Brayton Historical Cemetery in Warwick, Rhode Island. Can anyone tell me what kind of information is in the full database (the one at the library)? Are birth and death dates in this database? Can you find out where in the cemetery the graves are located, sections etc? I have read there are many gravesites at Brayton and if I visit, I’d like to know where to look. Like I said, I’m new at this so any information would be appreciated.

Thanks
Liz

Hi Liz,

I haven't been able to find much on this cemetery because it appears to have been abandoned in the late 1980's early 1990's when the caretaker apparently took off with some money. The link below gives some information.
http://www.savinggraves-us.org/ri/reports/brayton.html

According to this site many records are available thru Peter Barrett Funeral Home in Warwick.

https://volunteer.united-e-way.org/uwa08bf/org/opp/103158294...

The above volunteer site says the cemetery was cleaned up at the end of April. On this site there is also a link to the Warwick Historical Cemetery Commission. Maybe they can give you some more information on the cemetery.

Good luck,
Christine
I live on the West Coast and am not as familiar with Kent Co. history as I want to be. I have an ancestor who took an oath of fidelity in Coventry, Kent Co., RI in Sept. 1776. He was also listed in Coventry in the military census of 1774. To date, I have not been able to find out anything else about this particular ancestor during those years. Would someone from the Coventry area please respond with some hints about researching in that vicinity and time?

Thank you.

Sally Holcombe
Walnut Creek, California

There's a James Lockerin listed on The R.I. Historical Cemetery Transcription site. The code EG039 to the right of his name means he's buried at St Patrick's Cemetery on 6th Ave in East Greenwich. Not sure if this is the James you're looking for because no birth/death dates were given.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rigenweb/cemetery/cemetery...
