In 1790, Elliot Pool and Olive (Cornell) Pool are in Dighton MA. In 1800 they live in Bristol, RI. Between 1790 and 1810, they have at least 8 children born in Rhode Island. Someone did check the birth records for me at the library for the Towns of Barrington, Bristol, & Warren and found no references to the Pools.

Can anyone recommend any resources I should not overlook in locating birth records for this area in this timeframe?

My great-grandmother was Jennie Raymond Martin, born in July of 1856 in Rhode Island. I do not know what city. She married Andrew N. Potter on July 11, 1883 in Warren, Bristol, Rhode Island. Andrew was born in Seekonk, Massachusetts, which I believe is on the state line with RI. He was living with his father in East Providence at the time of the 1880 census. After the marriage, the Potters had three children: Raymond Andrew, Ethel B. and Stephen Martin Potter.

I would love to know who Jennie's parents and grandparents were. Anyone who knows, please respond. Thanks.

Hi All.

Robert, Agnes, and their son Robert R. are listed in the 1937 city directory for Bristol, Warren and Barrington, page 292, living in Hampden Meadows, at the end of Hanson Road (Ancestry.com). Agnes Beaumont Dunphy Smith's burial record in Montreal lists her previous address as 14 Hanson Road, Barrington, Rhode Island. Agnes died, a widow, on 21 Mar 1944. She was born in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, on 19 Oct 1887.

I was hoping that someone with access to city directories for other years would let me know the length of stay in Barrington for this family. And, if possible, I would like the name of Robert and Agnes' daughter.

I don't have any information on Robert Love Smith, other than the directory listed him as a driver. I'd be very interested in a death record or obituary for him.

I'd really appreciate the help.

Sincerely,

Bonnie

I am trying to locate any information regarding any Winterbotham families in the R.I. area 1842. I have a little notation in an old history article that states Jonathan Winterbotham and wife Mary migrated to Bristol from Berkshire England 1842 and then left for Mass. around 1847. They may have gone to Pike county Illinois from there. They may have had a son named charles and one named William. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since they lived in R.I. between two census dates, I have not been able to track them down but maybe there were other Winterbothams in the Bristol area. Thanks Candace Jeffers Smith

Looking for a John Gablinske we are not sure of the correct spelling, could be Gavalinski, or Garvalinsky, or Karvalinski.
He was stationed in England during WW2 about 1944/45 at Framlingham Suffolk air base. We are given information that he was a ground crew member of the 390th bomber group. If still alive he would be about 83/85. We are unsure of the state he was from and are trying to find any information we possibly can to help us trace this person or living relatives.
We have found in our search that there are families in Rhode Island with this name, so if anyone out there can help in our search, we would be so very grateful.
Many thanks.

Does anyone live in Bristol that could lookup a death record at Bristol Town Hall?

I have done some research already but have conflicting information from the RI State Archives and Providence City Hall where the death was registered.

It is for: Ellen Brady, died Dec 27, 1877 Bristol, RI OR died Jan 6, 1878 Bristol, RI. (It appears there was some delay between the actual death date and the recording of it to the state)

One record says she was found drowned, the other says drowned? with a question mark.

One record says her parents are John and Bridget Cullen, the other says John and Mary Farrell.

One record says she was a widow, the other married.
I think the RI and Prov records are the same person despite the discrepancies.

Since the place of death was Bristol, perhaps a town hall record would be best in this case and match one of my two death records.

Thanks in advance for any help in this little mystery.

P.S. I did not find any death notice in the Providence Daily Journal from Dec 23, 1877 to Dec 31, 1877. I did not check into January because I didn't know about the Jan 6 record at the time I was checking the microfilm at the PPL)

Regards,
James Leach
gggrandson

POW/MIA Korean War. Bristol Co. VIERA

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Bristol County, Rode Island as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: FRANK VIERA, JR
Born: July 3, 1929 Caucasian
Date of loss: December 23, 1951, Killed in Action (KIA)

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 8 families in Rode Island that have not been located. There is one family from Bristol County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I am search for the names of ships commanded by Captain Abner Mosher. I have just recently became owner of a letter written by Allen Talbot "having arrive in Newport last evening from Havana" to his aunt, Ruth Talbot Mosher on April 28, 1811. In the letter he states that "Uncle Mosher requested him to inform her that he and all aboard was well. And thought it probable he should sail from Havana by the last of April or the first of May for Bristol". Was he involved in the slave trade with the DeWolfs. I know Abner Mosher was connected to the DeWolfs and sailed some of their vessels. Can someone point me in the right direction? Any help would be appreciated.

My many thanks in advance,
The great great granddaughter of Abner and Ruth Mosher, Linda DeWitt Hughey

I am looking for any and all information that I can gather about my 3x greatgrandparents, Abner Mosher and Ruth Talbot Mosher. Abner was a Ship Master sailing out of Bristol. He was one of the founders of St Alban's Masonic Lodge in Bristol in 1800. He died in August of 1815 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Why was he there? Was he running the blockade? Are there any pictures of him or his family? His daughter, Elizabeth Mosher married my 2xgreatgrandfather, William Thomas DeWitt of Society Hill, South Carolina on September 15 1830 in Bristol at the "Catholic" Congregational Church which is now the First Congregational Church in Bristol. Both Abner and Ruth were born in Dighton, Massachusetts. Does the Masonic Lodge have a painting or image of him? I would really appreciate any help that can be given.

My many thanks in advance,

Linda DeWitt Hughey

Fellow listers: Does anyone have information or know about the ARMITAGE family of Barrington, RI?
Gilbert P Armitage (1912-1993) and Joan E (Bannan)
Armitage (1919-1993) lived on Lincoln Ave, Barrington,
RI in the 1950's? to 1990's. I don't know the house
number.
They had a son, Stephen R Armitage, who lived in > Wisoconsin in 1993.
They also had 3 grandchildren. (presumably Stephen's > children)
Gilbert P Armitage's parents were born in England.
Joan E Bannan was the sister of John T Bannan Jr and
Thomas F Bannan II, all children of John T Bannan and Wanda L (Zwolinski) Bannan of Providence, RI.
I am trying to contact present day relatives (I > think).
{about 1850, Anne Leach married the 1st John Bannan}
Anne Leach was my ggggrandfather's sister. She was > born in Co.Louth, Ireland in 1830.
Thanks all, Sincerely, James Leach

I am hot on the trail now. Does anyone claim Jalen Greene and wife Esther Gleeson (Gleason) of Rhode Island in their ancestry? The name Jalen is deciphered from his son's death certificate - it could be Julius, Jalias, etc. Best guess is Jalen

It appears Jalen's son, James Green, b. 1802, married Mary Hewitt and lived (floated maybe) around the western end of NY - they had children in Attica, Greece, and who knows where. James went to Michigan at least for a while, but returned and died in Pike 1884. His daughters, Elvira Green Shepherd 1821-1914 (m. Martin Shepherd 1814-1877) lived and died in Pike, Mary A. (Adeline M.) Green Murray b. 1825 (m. Sanford L. Murray 1814-1859 resided Michigan) came back to Pike from Michigan and died there 1878. Son Albert Benjamin Green m. Florilla Fargo of Warsaw and moved to Michigan. There was another daughter Emily who is missing in action - and possibly a son.

I am welcome to all hints. Ann Marr

Census help

Hey everyone,
I would like to find the following census in 1910 in Bristol or Warren, RI.
I am looking for a Marion Vera. She was the daughter of a man with the last name of Vera (first name unkown but could possibly be Frederick. He could also have been born in Portugal). She had a mother, possibly by the name of Emma Munroe (not sure). Marion had an older sister, Caroline Vera, and two brothers Francis Vera and Frederick Vera. They may not live with their parents, Emma died when Marion was a child (age unknown) and Marion's father left.
So the 1910 census should find a Caroline Vera, Marion Vera, Francis Vera, Frederick Vera. They could be living under the roof of a man with the last name of Vera and wife possibly by the name of Emma. I know that this isn't very specific but I have very little information.
Also, if you identify the names of the parents, I would also like a lookup in the 1900 census for the parents. I need this information very much if anyone can help. Thanks!
You can email me at RaPoBoy07@attbi.com
Paul

Lookup requested: Michael O'Neil, Warren RI d.1910-1913

I am not quite sure how I can locate this record other than to send in $15 to the town clerk in Warren, RI, which I'd rather not do unless all other methods have been exhausted. (Oh for the days of cheap records!!) I was unable to find his death in the Ancestry.com or NewEnglandAncestors.org web sites for RI Deaths.

I am looking for the death record for Michael O'Neil, who probably died in Warren, Bristol Co., RI, USA between 1910 and 1913. In the 1910 census, he is living at 117 Child St. in Warren. His daughter Nora is listed in the city directory in 1913 at 117 Child St., but he is not, so I presume he was dead by then. His wife Julia died between 1900 and 1910. I do not know her maiden name or date of death, either.

I am hoping to find out if Michael's parents are Denis O'Neill and Honora O'Sullivan. [Denis was the son of Cornelius O'Neill and Ellen Murphy.]

If anyone can stop by the Town Clerk's office and has time to look at the books, I would appreciate it. I live in Missouri so am unable to do so at this time. Also, I do not know if there is a public library with newspaper archives that have been indexed. If so, I would appreciate it if someone can look up his obituary (if it is indexed).

If the City records are nicely organized, and it wouldn't be too much trouble, I would be grateful if someone could search for Julia's death between 1900 and 1910.

Not sure if this is asking too much - I don't know what Warren is like, or how easy the records are to access. In some towns, I know they do not mind if you look at the books yourself and handwrite notes for no charge. If an obituary is found, I will gladly pay for expenses of photocopying and postage.

Thank you and sorry if I am presuming too much. I do enjoy helping others when I can.

Susan

I don’t want to say that this is more important than anyone else’s request. I lost my mother when I was three her name was Tammy Marlow, my father’s family knows very little about my mother’s family. I’m 21 now and having a baby of my own, and I would just like to fill in that side of my family tree. My mother was married to a man named Steve Crowley, and had another daughter with him by the name of Jessica. I’m not sure if by the same man she had an older daughter by the name of Sabrina. I know she grew up in RI, and that her mother or grandmother use to adopted kids or had a foster home. That’s about all I know except that my sister Jessica’s father died, so she went to live with her uncle, who is a lawyer. I believe his name is Richard or William Crowley. Any help would be great!!!!! Thanks Mary Carter Mells_mellon@hotmail.com

Male Born Feb. 1956 RI, adopted out to Anderson - parents Corea/Bond

I am Maryetta, I am assisting a friend looking for her nephew, here is what she knows:

Virginia Corea gave birth to a boy in Feb 1956 in RI. He was adopted by a couple named Anderson and he was a milkman.
(I know the bio dads name but it wasn't revealed at the time. His last name was Bond.)
The baby had red hair at birth.
Years ago I sent a letter to RI Social Services asking that it be put in his record in case he ever looked for bio family info, he can contact me. Never got a response and don't even know if they bothered to put it in his file.
(Or if the adoption was handled by them.)
Maybe Providence but not sure.
I just called Ma and she said the Anderson's that adopted him lived in Hoxie, a part of West Warwick.

The Yahoo Group, "tauntonbriggs" has been updated with several photos, some DNA test results, and a key to the 9 Brigg(s) names on the 1728 Taunton map on the Home Page.

Some DNA tests are complete, and several others are being done. We have tests coming from several of the many John Briggs found in the Taunton region (including RI) in the 1600's. But there are others who haven't joined the testing fun, especially descendants of Clement Briggs.

We need more DNA test volunteers! Get in touch with me if you're interested or know someone who should be.

Walt
Clarinda Peirce married Anthony Corey

Clarinda Pearce or Peirce (ca. 1776 - 1872) married Anthony Corey (1774 - 1856) in 1796 in Freetown, Mass. The marriage record calls her "Clarinda Shaw alias Pearce", which most likely means she was born a Pearce and married first a Shaw. Both Clarinda and Anthony were born in RI -- he in either North Kingstown or East Greenwich. They removed to Saratoga County, NY, and then to Oneida County, NY. Their children were Mercy, Abigail, Warner, Sally, Ruth, Mary, and Anthony. Who was Clarinda?

Changes of lines between Rhode Island and MA

My records say Israel Morse was born 21 Jul 1776 in Swansea, Bristol Co. MA. However his tombstone reads he was born in Rhode Island.
Recently I heard the boundary lines changed back and forth during the late 1700's. Does any one have any dates for this?
Israel was the son of William Morse born 18 Feb. 1768 in Swansea. Briston Co. MA. He married Mary Eddy supposedly 18 Feb. 1768 in Swansea.
Louisville, KY

Andrews Family RI-NY City abt 1830's

My 2nd G-Grandfather Robert Andrews was born 1838 in NY City. In the 1880 NY , Manhatan NY census he is listed with his family. His Father and Mother (whose names I don't know) are listed as having been from RI.They would have had to leave RI and arrived in NY City by 1830's .I am estimateing the fathers birth date as abt. 1818. In Robert Andrews Obituary in 1902 ,his son wrote that Robert Andrews(1838) father (who was from RI) "died when he was 7, leaving him orphaned , to raise himself and sisters". I do not know the sisters names, but if they were orphaned the mother would have to have died already. The father would have died in NY City in 1845. In the 1860's Robert Andrews (1838) coresponded with someone in Pittsfield ,MA. whom he refered to as"My dearest Mother".Perhaps this was the woman who raised him.? If any of this looks familiar to anyone please e-mail me.
Thanks,
Bob Andrews

TALBEE and IRISH late 1600s and early 1700's

I have found a listing on World Connect for a John TALBEE with spouse unknown. I submit the possibility she was Hannah IRISH.
John TALBEE had a son Stephen Birth: 26 Aug 1693 in Bristol Bristol RI
Death: Bef 10 Mar 1745 in Bristol Bristol RI 1

The will of John IRISH Jr. names Hannah TALBEE.

John IRISH's grandson Jesse married a Mary ALBEE. Could she be Mary TALBEE? Nothing accurate is known about her.

Following is will of JohnIRISH recorded at Taunton; Probate book 3, p. 387, made 9 Nov. 1715 and proved 20 March, 1717:

"Son David and my wife to be executors; to wife part this part of the great lot I now dwell upon and one half the housing that is to say from the great highway [i.e. West Main Rd.] from the sea for her life. To sons David, Johnathan and John Irish, all my rights to the 16th and 17th great lots [this refers to LC]. To son Jedediah all my lands in Middleborough and meadow at Sampson's brook in Plymouth. To wife land in Duxbury that was formerly my father's which I have been wronged and abused about. Pray take my meaning. To four daughters 20 pounds each, Elizabeth, Sarah, Content and Mary. To daughter Joanna 6 shillings. The 17th great lot to my son Johnathan to have 30 acres and my son John to have the rest.

To daughter Hannah Talbee 10 sheep.

To son Johnathan the west end at waterside and east to brook where spring is. To son John Irish the rest of the land to the highway and rest of his lot on the east of the highway until it meets David's 10 acres. If it please God take me away from the cross upon the ground it shall be at my wife's disposal for the good of the family ... "
