Hi - I need help. I haven't researched in Rhode Island before. I'm trying to help someone in the UK who is trying to find a cousin for her 96yr old father.

this is all she knows:
Harry DOUGLAS and his wife Fanny (nee BROADBENT bn. 1878 in Leeds, UK). Harry was a carpet designer. They emigrated to USA in early 1900s.
They had a son Lewis, born approx. 1913, who in turn had a son "Buddy" born approx. 1943.
They lived in Rhode Island in the 1950s.
She's hoping Buddy is still alive and her father can talk to him

thanks for all of your help!
Julie in CA

I am interested in information on my great-great grandmother's family. Specifically, I am looking for information on any other siblings Blanche had and also further information on her parents/grandparents.

Blanche Creusot was born Apr 1886 in Warren, Bristol Co, RI. She was the daughter of Auguste Creusot (b. Jan 1844) and Aline (Alice?) Dupré (b. Dec 1860) both born in France.

Aline's father Nicolas Dupré was also born in France in Jul 1818. I believe the 3 of them immigrated to the US in either 1884 or 1887.

Blanche had 1 sister (that I know of) named Aline and she was born in Jul 1896 in Massachusetts.

Researchers: Providence Public Library Shortens Hours of Operation

For those of you who may be considering a trip to RI to do a little research:

The Board of Trustees for the Providence Public Library, in the face of the loss of funding from the City of Providence and shrinking revenues from their endowment investments have instutited the following changes effective with the fiscal year beginning 1 July ~

Seven branches...which I think is all of them...of the PPL will now, essentially, belong to the City of Providence. The PPL is leasing the buildings to the City for $1 and donating all the books and materials in them to the City. (Hopefully, any important records, documents, photos and other materials have been moved to the main library where they will be preserved & available to all researchers rather than being a temptation to the politicians as a possible source of revenue through the sale of them.) This arrangement is as an alternative to what the PPL Board of Trustees was originally considering which had been to close the branches entirely.

The main Library at Empire Street remains as it was. However, the operating hours have changed dramatically. Now, from September until mid May, the Library will be closed on Wednesdays. It will only be open for 5 hours on Fri & Sat and for 4 hours on Sunday.

Nothing was mentioned in this morning's newspaper regarding exactly what the opening and closing times will be each day at the PPL or the now City owned branches.

I am looking for possible family related to my great grandfather Francesco/Frank Paolella who immigrated from Grazzenise, Italy to the US in the early 1900's. He first lived in the Bronx with his brother Vincenzo/Vince Paolella. Next he worked in the cotton mills in Mass for a brief time. Finally he lived in the Barrington/Bristol/Providence, RI area. His grandchildren in Rhode Island are quite elderly and don't recall their grandfather, anyone who might is no longer living.

Francesco left his wife and several children in Italy and only one son eventually immigrated. I am assuming that since he never returned to Italy, he began another family in Rhode Island?? I am looking for possible family from another marriage?? Sound familiar to anyone?? Please contact me.

Thank You,

Marie Volbeda

John Howland came to Plymouth, MA aboard the Mayflower in 1620. Many of his descendants settled in Rhode Island which was part of Massachusetts back then. So my Howland ancestors lived there until the 1770's when Caleb Howland went to Vermont. Now we're back in Western Massachusetts.
He was a building contractor and house mover in Bristol and Warren RI about that time. Supposedly they moved a house across the ice of frozen Bristol Harbor one winter. I don't know what year it was. I know of a few houses in Bristol that he and his crews built.
My great-grandmother was Jennie Raymond Martin, born in July of 1856 in Rhode Island. I do not know what city. She married Andrew N. Potter on July 11, 1883 in Warren, Bristol, Rhode Island. Andrew was born in Seekonk, Massachusetts, which I believe is on the state line with RI. He was living with his father in East Providence at the time of the 1880 census. After the marriage, the Potters had three children: Raymond Andrew, Ethel B. and Stephen Martin Potter.

I would love to know who Jennie's parents and grandparents were. Anyone who knows, please respond. Thanks.

Okay, I managed to find information on the Salisbury family going back centuries thanks to the LDS website. I am stuck on Stephen Martin, though. His name is too common to identify without a birthdate or his parents' names. Can another good soul help me out?

Thanks.

According to the information from their marriage record, Andrew's parents were Henry A. Potter and Mary A. Read. Jennie's parents were Stephen Martin and Patience C. Salisbury. Jennie was born in Warren, R.I.

I think I can provide some more info on Stephen Martin. I just looked thru my notes and along with Jennie's marriage record I looked at her 1856 birth. I wrote that her father was born in Swansey/Swansea, Mass and mother was born in Warren.

The 1860 Warren Census has Stephen age 39, born in Massachusetts, so his birth would be about 1821. Patience age 36 was born in R.I.
Stephen is not on the 1870 Census with Patience, so I assume he died. The youngest child is age 6, so he must have died between 1863-1870.

Death records are available at The Archives in Providence. Stephen's parents (if known) should be on there. Here's the email::
reference@sec.state.ri.us Records start in 1853, so you can't get his birth info here.

Hope this helps you find his parents names

I am not related, but here's some info from her death record::

Annie Turtle Atkinson, age 83, died in East Providence, RI on Jan. 28, 1938, of skin cancer. She was the widow of William Atkinson, and was born Aug 13, 1854 in England. Her parents Edwin Turtle and Ann Allen were both born in England. The informant was her son Robert Atkinson, of Warren, R.I. She is buried in Westville Cemetery in New Haven, Ct.

I know it's not the obituary you were looking for, but hope this helps.
