Given the ages of the children, I rather believe that is incorrect. Either Peter came to the US first to establish himself then returned to get Wilhelmena and the children or both of them came earlier and returned for the children. I notice in 1920 that Augusta shows her year of immigration at 1900. They are going to a friend in MI - I can't read the name. The transcriber shows the last residence as Drobno. I could not find it on this list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_and_towns_in_Rus...

I really don't think the girls were dropped off in Michigan by parents from PA. Perhaps the story became garbled due to retelling. It is interesting that sometime after 1920, Peter and Wilhelmina moved to Lancaster County, PA. I guess you have seen their memorials at FindaGrave. She died soon after the move.

Ellis Island records only begin with 1892. There is a record for a Josef Peter Rölich on Ancestry, but I don't have a paid subscription to view it to see if it is a possible match.
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=nypl&rank=...

Also this might be Peter:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=USpassports&am...

You might want to start a new thread on the Russian board (link below) and ask if anybody recognizes the family name and the name of the town.

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.asia.russia.general/mb...

Other than that I can't think of anything except obtaining his first and second naturalization papers which are available for a fee ($20) here under Ontonagon County:

http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,2351,7-160-18635...

Rehlich Peter V4,P126 (1st papers)
Rehlech Peter V12,P66 (2nd papers)

I think it was in the Ancestry message boards under Witt that someone mentioned those names. I tried to go back and find it but there are hundreds of them and I can't do it at this moment. But I'm pretty sure that's how I heard it.

I don't know if you have obtained Peter's immigration petition but when he returned through Ellis Island on 03.06.1922 he states he was naturalized 09/1905 in the County Court, Ontonagon, MI. His petition may have some information about the girls.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JNS1-MN5

In the 1930 Reinholds, Lancaster County, PA census, Anna Busse, Peter's niece, is living with him and indicated she immigrated in 1923. Busse was the maiden name of his wife.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XHQH-R6B

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3GH-1MX

I checked for a manifest at Ellis Island for Anna Busse. She arrived with her brother Hugo on 08.01.1923 going to Peter's residence in Reinhold. Both gave their place of birth as Wladislawi? (cut off on manifest), Poland. [Could be Wladyslawowo] They last resided in Marten, Germany. Their contact in Germany is a cousin Otto Wittig, Marten, Karlstr, 13.

So Witt may be Wittig.

Jacob Berkey (1738) and Barbara Bergey (1679)

I'm trying to find out if these two individuals are related. Jacob Berkey is the ancestor of many of my Amish ancestors on my maternal grandfather's side. Jacob Berkey was born 1738 in Berks Co. Pennsylvania and died 1805 in Somerset Co. PA. He married Elizabeth Mishler (b. 1738) their daughter was Magdalena Berkey b.1756, she married Christian Miller. Christian Miller was a member of the Amish church which leads me to believe so were the Berkeys.

Barbara Bergey was most likely Mennonite, she was born 1679 and died 1751 as a guess. She married Christian Moyer (b.1679 in Germany-d.1751 in Pennsylvania) Their daughter was Anne Meyer (b.1706-d.1758) Anne married a Mennonite Bishop named Henry Funk (1694-1760) She is an ancestor on my father's side of the family.

Because the Amish were originally an offshoot of the Mennonites, and some families would convert from Amish to Mennonite, plus the similar last name, I was wondering if there is a possibility of a connection? Can anybody help me with this?

Jacob Berkey's father is possibly Leonard Berkey b. 1680

I have a study on Patrick Shiel, Michael's nephew, which was done by a gentleman in Michigan. That was in early 1970s, and he was trying to find who Patrick's father was and where he was born. Most of my info on Michael comes from his notes as he thought by researching Michael he would come across answers to his questions on Patrick. Don't know how it came out. Do you know which of the siblings Patrick might have been born to?

Rehlich couple in two little girls from Russia in Michigan late 1890s leave for PA

Does anyone know of any Woytovich or Waytovich who lived in Pennsylvania after dropping off two little girls in Berrien County, Michigan before 1900? The little girls were from Russia and the couple who took them in were Russian. The couple's last name was Rehlich, Roehlich, or even Roelick. Are there any stories in your families about this?

I have a 93-year-old friend whose mother was one of those girls. I would like to reunite her with her real family. Even her mother didn't know what her last name really was. She was just known as a Rehlich after that. The little girl was 6 years old in 1900 on the census of that year, named Mary.

My friend did some research on her own years ago and for some reason mentions the name Witt. She's as clear as a bell and still wondering about her mother. The girls never saw their parents again.

Thank you!

My Dad's Uncle and Aunt were Sabato (Sam) and Clelia (Clara) Longo Tesauro. They were both from Bellosguardo, Italy in Salerno. Sabato 1st immigrated to Philadelphia and then to Detroit, Michigan. My Dad aunt, another uncle (Aurelio) and my grandfather (Pepino aka Giuseppe) lived in Pittsburgh, PA. The Tesauro's had a large family in Michigan. All of the previous generation have passed away, except for one brother (Sam) who is in his 90's and lives with wife Mary Lou, in Chagrin Falls, Ohio (outside of Cleveland). There are many cousins in Michigan and around the country (i.e. OH, CA).

OK. I meant before Michael. And, yes, Michael and Mary were married in 1816 until her death in 1829 then he married Bridget Ryan in 1840, I'm guessing Mary's sister. Same last maiden name. Michael and Mary are James' parents; Michael and Bridget are my great-grandmother's parents.

I am descended from Michael's son, James, who spelled his name Sheil. I live in Anderson, IN, close to Tipton where many of the Shiels are buried.
When researching your family history, it is important to start with what you know about your parents, grandparents, etc. Do you know the name of your father's father? Do you know whether he might be Edward S.Penefsky, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1937 and died in Brevard county Florida on 12 Jan 1989? If that's your grandfather, then there are quite a few resources available to trace your family tree, back to your great-great-grandfather Stanley Penefsky, and his wife Elizabeth Jendrzeski, both born in Poland.
Please check your messages on Ancestry (little envelope at the top of the page, to the left of your username.
You probably already have the key to solving this mystery.
M

Well, after about 500 hours of research on my family's history I have finally made "the" connection and am thrilled! Richard Lalor Shiel was Michael's brother (LOTS of info on him on internet): their parents, Edward Shiel and Catherine McCarthy. Catherine was descendant of McCarthy-Reagh dynasty. I have much info on that, gleaned from the internet. Catherine: born Springhouse, France 1745. Edward Shiel: born 1741 in Ireland. I have lots of info on Michael Shiel, birth, death, newspaper clips, gravestone photo, plat map of town, obituary, etc. How best to get these to you? Where do you live? Also, I would assume that Michael married Mary, then her sister, Bridget. Common in those days. You have a very impressive pedigree, as do I. Which of Michael Shiel's children are you from?

There was also a third brother, the youngest, I only knew as Uncle Billy, who died at Pearl Harbor before I was born. Julia Kelly's middle name was Mae. My older sister is named Julie after her (our grandmother). When "Grandma Kelly" remarried Mr. Gray, they lived in Huey, PA.

I found your post only when I happened to google Gilmer (brother to Durelle) and learned that he died in May, 2012. I was last in contact with him when my father died, to notify that part of the family. No one contacted me about Gilmer, but I don't know if his (then) wife Kathy ever knew about us.

Re: Disowned Sarah Jane Griffith-Ireland to Canada where she was widowed to the USA.

Hi
I am glad you read old posts! Yes I figured if anybody recognized the story it would mean possibly solving the riddle because I know so little about the death of Robert Cooke except it had to be after 1837 and the birth of Daughter Catherine Cooke. All I know is that Sarah Jane Griffith Cooke left Brockville Ontario with an American man, going with him to somewhere in the USA and having a second family with him. As I stated a son of the second marriage did get in touch with his Cooke half brothers in Lansdowne Tp., Leeds County, Ontario Canada.
I can find no record for any second marriage in Brockville, (Across from Morristown, St Lawrence County, NYS.)
So she may have married in the USA? Have you any dates for your Sarah Jane Hall? Birth? Marriages? Death place? Where did Mr Stoddard die? When? Did the children assume the Harding surname or did they remain Stoddard? Is there any history of one of the Stoddard children going to Ireland to look for Griffith roots? He failed in his attempt. But it is known that the son who visited the Cookes of Lansdowne sis indeed go to Ireland for that purpose.

Did she assume the name Hall? I could see Sarah Jane reverting to Griffith or remaining "Cooke" until she married the American fellow...
I think the first thing we need to do is to track down timing and dates if they can be found.
Thanks
Rob McGinn

Hi, I'm looking for the parents of William Davis. Apparently he was born abt 1808 in Wales. He lived in Pennsylvania with his wife Henrietta. They had two children in PA, Gomer and Henry Clay.

The Davis side of my family is extremely small and I'm looking for any information at all. Thanks in advance.

Donna

This is so interesting. This is the story my mother told of my grandmother's mother, Sarah Jane Hall - that she eloped with the gardener of their estate, and came to Canada. She married a Stoddard, and had two children, Charles and Blanche, and then married Ed Harding, who raised both of the children.
It's such an amazing story - I wonder if it could be the same person.

I have been looking and cannot find anything on Annie Goodin, I did find her husband George Woodbey was in California and remarried at the age of 70 yrs old in 1925. If you don't have that information I will give it to you.
I typed in George Washington Woodbey genealogy and that is how I found he was in California. It also had a write up about him which was quite interesting. He was a slave.
I will try searching for Annie Goodin

Hello, I found out a great deal about my grandmothers side of the family (Woodbey) and I have come to realize my 3 times great grandmother was born in pennslyvania according to a website I found, attaching her Women's work in Nebraska as a Black Preaching woman out shining her husband Geroge Washington Woodbey. I believe Annie R Goodin ( Annie Goodin-Woodbey ) was born in the 1850's. How can I find out who her parents were. Or if she was a slave or Born free? It is very hard to find out anything from Pa's records. I lknow she moved to canada. I have no idea how to find out where she was over there. Any one familiar with this type of search? I could sure use help.
