York Co. PA GIBSONS: Jacob 1740, his father Andrew 1708?-1803

Would very much appreciate hearing from anyone having information on these men and their children. A couple of public trees have my "brick wall" ancestor (James 1776-1845) listed as a son of Jacob. They say Jacob's wife was Anna Whiteford.

Did this info. come from other public trees, or was it perhaps handed down through the family? I'd love to know. (No, the current tree owners don't know.) Thanks!

Julie

Hi, I believe i have some information on this particular family! My grandmother was a Leininger from Fulton County, OH where there are many Leiningers, and has a county history book in which there is a story about a girl named Barbara Leininger who was kidnapped by Indians. I am not living near my grandparents at this time, but if you are still looking for information, please email me at tarellekristine@yahoo.com and I will see if I can get the information to you!

Hello Rhonda,

I am Harry Dawson. Harry James Dawson was my great grandfather. I have been researching our family tree for the last 20 years and have always been puzzled by this "dead end", specially since the written history left to me indicates that his father was George, who was apparently killed in the civil war before he was born. I would appreciate hearing if you ever were able to resolve his heritage and about any future family reunions.

All the Best,

Harry

The tombstone for Elizabeth Warner says she died Nov 13, 1895 age 80 years, 3 months and 19 days. This puts her birth around the 24th or 25th of July 1815. One of the family trees on Ancestry has her parents as John Miller 1786-1865 and Elizabeth Kunkel 1791-1882. They are of Shrewsbury Township. I have not checked further into the children of John and Elizabeth. I thought I'd post thi info to your query as another approcah to who Elizabeth Millers parents are.

Johan Leonhardt NUTZ/NOTZ is listed on page 59 as an early settler in Codorus Township. He immigrated to Philadelphia in 1738 on the Two Sisters (which incidentally also brought some of my ancestors to America in the same year). He was naturalized on Sept. 24, 1746. His estate was administered in Lancaster Co. in 1758. He does not appear to have lived in York County, just owned land there. He received a warrant for 100 acres in North Codorus Twp. on Feb. 15, 1749, that was surveyed as 343 acres on Nov. 25, 1775, and 337 acres on Mar. 8/9, 1750. He married Maria Eva BARTH on Nov. 16, 1723, and Anna Catharina, dau. of Henrich KEYDEL, on Oct. 26, 1734. He had the following children at Zuzenhausen, Germany: (reference: 18th Century Emigrants from German Speaking Lands to North America/The Northern Kraichgau (1983 Annette K. Burgert).

Johan Georg born Jan. 28, 1726 and died before 1735.
Anna Dorothea born Apr. 22, 1733 (at Durlachishen) married Christian GUNTHER in 1752 and died of consumption in Lebanon Co., Pa on Aug. 31, 1799. (Salem Lutheran Church records) He died in 1785. She was a communicant at the First Reformed Congregation at Lancaster in 1750.
Johan Georg born Dec. 18, 1735 and died before 1738.
Elisabeth born Feb. 9, 1753 bapt. at the First Reformed Congregation in Lancaster on Feb. 18, 1753 and spon. by Christian VOGT and wife.

Joan

Do you know the cost of the book? I would be greatly interested in it if not too costly. Also am curious with your Etter - has it ever been shown as Ertter? I have a Josephine Raum who married a John Ertter and they are the parents of my great uncle Clem's wife Mary Virginia (think I have this all in correct order off the top of my head). I would be interested in this will, yes, just in case there is a connection. My e-mail is waughtel33@gmail.com
Thank you so much.
Antoinette (Tacoma, Washington)

I have not yet run across these names, I have been looking at Samuel Brillhart because of his link to my family. Samuel would have been my 3x great grandfather’s brother in law. I believe that my 3x great grandfather (Jacob Etter) lived near Samuel in Pennsylvania before moving to Virginia. I am trying to track down the family line.
Joe Etter
I have a copy of Samuel Brillhart's will and he makes mention of a Juliana that he raised and intermarried with Jacob Kraft. I cannot say with all certainty that this is his daughter, but possible. Secondly through a form for Sons of the American Revolution it appears that he had a son Samuel Brillhart III.

I have not done a lot with the Brillhart family, but am looking into them because of the Danner link and that my Jacob Etter went from Virginia to Pennsylvania to address his wife's inheritance from the Brillhart will. Jacob & Elizabeth are from the area, and this is as far back as I have my family line so I am trying to find them in Pennsylvania and his parents/family.

If you are interested in copies of the Will send me your e-mail and I will send them.
Thank you for this. Actually, all of the included info is sourced to my original work from some years back--such is the internet echo chamber. My original research in the mid-90s led me to York, PA, and court records there. Subsequently I identified the Catholic parish near Heidelberg from which the family originated prior to their immigration to PA in 1732. The church is in Heiligkreuzsteinach, a few miles NE of Heidelberg in the Odenwald. I visited the area in 2002, visited the church and compared my microfilm copies of the register to the original one in the parish house. The surviving portions of the original Floesser house are in a nearby village, though that only includes the door and the doorframe; the balance of the structure was later rebuilt. Many very distant cousins remain in the area there, and retain the original German spelling of the surname.

Some years ago I collaborated with cousin Michael Barkman, deceased, of Bedford Co., PA, on a brochure giving the history of the family and the Fletcher Cemetery in Monroe Twp., Bedford Co. The text I created for that (later reproduced by cousin Tom Clabaugh for a Bedford PA ancestral research website) included a few early errors on my part, including my misreading of "Flotzer" as the German surname. The German double-S figure resembles a "tz" written cursively, which confused me initially. The "o" is with an umlaut, which alters the sound a bit to something like "Floeh-zuh." The name literally means "floater," or raftsman. Largely from that posting, much copy/pasting without source credit resulted...amusing as it served to reproduce the errors intact, now quoted as fact without correction. Oh well.

A few corrections to your data: Johann Jacob Floesser Sr was born in 1704 in H'steinach, and died in Manchester Twp., York Co., PA....not Germany. Anna Margarethe Reichardt died in Lancaster Co., PA. Floesser married again, to Anna Elizabethe ___(unknown), who survived him. Johann Jaoob Jr. is thought to be the last child of Anna Margarethe, and it may be that she died from childbirth complications. There are no known firm birth years for either Philip or Eva, as the parish register for H'Steinach only begins in 1699. Most likely the years you've mentioned were my own guestimates.

The part of Germany from which the family came looks very much like western MD and southern PA....rolling hills with fertile valleys, ridges topped by forest. Also, many apple orchards. Hard cider, or apfelwein, is still highly prized.

I'm guessing from the Wiki-tree you've linked that you descend from John Fletcher, d. 1860?

A Theory on who Samuel Harman is.
As you suggested I looked in York County. I found no Harmans in the late 1840s in Fawn Township. Since the 3 children of Samuel in the 1850 census were listed as being born in Pennsylvania I decided to look elsewhere in York. Then I looked at the 1840 census for York County and found 9 townships with Harmans. Then I looked to see where the Kuntz(Koons, etc) were in 1840. One township that had both surnames was Windsor. I looked in the Windsor tax records and there was Samuel in 1845 along with Peter and George. Also there was Ludwig Kuntz. A few years later John Harman shows up in the taxes.
I found that Peter and his wife Frederica were from Germany. I thought that Ludwig Kuntz would be also since Ludwig often is Anglicized to Lewis. What could be more natural than the children of 2 families from Germany to marry. Peter Herrman ( Herman, Harman) who died 7 July 1852 has a York County will U-15 which lists his children. There are John, Mariah, Elizabeth who marred Philip Shade, Magdalena married Jacob Smeltzer (in Chanceford in 1850), Susanna married Jacob Jones, Frederick, Samuel, William Otterbein, and Rose Ann Margareta.
Peter is called Rev. He also in his will asks that his wife be left some of the medicines he has to continue his practice. Another interesting item from the will was that Mariah was to get one dollar and that was all.
In the 1900 census Samuel’s son Amos says he was born January 1846. Amos died 11/10/1920 and is buried in Center Presbyterian Cemetery. He was age 75-9-24. Samuel’s son Washington is George Washington Harman born 1847 died 1918 buried in Centre Presbyterian Cemetery in Fawn Township. This area of York County is very close to the Maryland line.
Peter married Frederica Bramer Miller in 1837 in Salem Co. NJ making Samuel's mother Peter's first wife Anna Barbara Eichart born in Switzerland,
how do you know that Samuel born 1824 who is in the 1850 census is the Samuel who died in 1864 in Chester Co.or for that matter ever lived in York County?

Have you found any info on the Natives you were asking about? Local farmers tell me there were several families of Natives that lived around the Hershaull Park area of East Hopewell Twp. While I have yet to find anyone who remembers exactly what tribe they were from, it's possible that they were Shawnee, Seneca, Susquehannock, Conoy or Nanticoke. In all of my research I've found predominantly Shawnee in our area in 18th century forward, though.

I'm familiar with Strayer descendants living here now and one of them married into the Evans family who come from Saponi Natives. The Rineholts and Lefflers in my family come from those Native families I mentioned above in East Hopewell, late 1800s early 1900s. They were farmers. If you want to know more about various Pennsylvania Natives feel free to message me.

You might have better luck contacting the York County Archives: http://yorkcountyarchives.org/search.asp.

I saw records listed there for a Frances Himes - looks like he owned a tavern in HEIDELBERG township in the late 1780's?

I'm not related, I just peeked at the archives search to see if they had anything :)

First I have Christian Himes name as Johann Christian Himes I have that he was born 1731, source Dickinson College, Carlisle PA from one of his descendants Charles Heim/Himes a Science Professor. Do you know the death date of his father Wilhelm Heim b. 1710 born in Mutterstadt, Germany.
My husband is related to these men and I have searched for over 20 years, and would be glad to share what I found. Some one had that Wilhelm Heim died at age 106 which seems wrong ? so I am still looking for the date of this death. Write to me himesd12@gmail.com thanks Dottie & John Himes

I don't know what happened to Peter. Anyone have any ideas where I could look next? Thank you
