I'm having a very hard time with all the Eleanor Anderson's I'm digging up in PA!
For MY Ellen Anderson McAllister (GGG grandmother), I've discovered grave inscriptions (but I cannot connect MY Ellen with the stones 100%), listed in Egle's Notes and Queiries of Pennsylvania, 1700s-1800s, Fourth Series Vol. I, Notes and Queries - LXVIII, pp. 190-92. These grave stones are located at the Meeting House Graveyard at Upper Pennsboro' Prebyterian Church, nearly 2 miles northwest from the center of Carlisle.
The graves of interest are those of McAllisters. "James McAllister d. 23 Ap 1855, in the 77th year of his age."; "Archibald McAllister d. 1 June 1858 in the 88th year of his age"; "Eleanor McAllister d. 2 Jan 1858, in the 75th year of her age"; "Andrew McAllister d. 1 Nov 1804, aged 73 years. Also, Margaret, wife of Andrew McAllister, d. August 1804, aged 61 years" - Mary (Young) McAllister was b. in Pennsboro' and m. Andrew on 17 Sept 1765 in the Meeting House Springs Presbyterian Church in Cumberland, PA. Does anyone know if this Eleanor was the wife of either James or Archibald? And could Andrew and Marg.Young McAllister be Eleanor's parents, or in-laws? The CMA (Clan McAllister) has mention of a James McAllister (s/o Hugh and Mary Harbison) in the DAR files who was married to an Ellen Anderson. Also listed are his brothers: William, Esq. m.30 Jun 1772 to Sarah Thompson, d/o John and Joan Crisabel Greenlee; Hugh, Jr. m. Sarah Nelson; John m. Elizabeth Campbell (I've seen her name as Mary Elizabeth McRenyolds, too). I may have uncovered another brother, Thompson who m. Lydia Miller Addams (forgot the source for it though - I think the Ancestry.com world tree project).

Ellen Anderson McAllister and Sampson Smith had 5 kids:
William Carlisle Smith b. 28 Oct. 1848, m. Louisa M. Zellers, d/o Levi Zellers (s/o Bartholomew and Rose A. Miller Zellers). William C. Smith's biography in "Bibliographical History of York Co., PA", (Hopewell Township, p116) is very informative. They had no children. His bio states that Wm. is the "son of Sampson and Eleanor(McAllister) Smith, of Hopewell Township".
Next came Jane Elizabeth Smith b. bef 1853 who married Andrew Zellers, (s/o Levi and bro. of Louisa M. Zellers) Some of my information came from an e-mail sent by Mel Miller, who found it in "York Co. Pennsylvania-Vol II", George Prowell (1907) - Andrew Zellers biography, p. 590.
Next came my GG grandffather, Rev. John Andrew Livingston Smith b. 12 Mar 1853 in Cross Roads, PA d. 1940 Cumberland, MD (? - this is according to the Princeton Theological Society's biography of J.A.L.Smith) m. Mary Louise (Louisa) Johnson b. 1869 d. 1925, d/o John Johnson b. 1816/17 Cecil Co. MD and Eliza Jane Alexander (d/o Joseph Henry Alexander) also b. abt. 1816 Cecil Co. MD. John and Eliza Johnson moved over the border to York Co. PA, almost immediately aft. they married in 1840 in Cecil Co., MD. Rev. J.A.L. Smith and his wife Mary were Presbyterian missionaries who, beginnig in 1881, est. scools and congregations in Utah. All their kids (Mary Louise m. Wm. Wilkinson, Maud Rue m. Wm. Dey Herbert, Hodge S. (for Samuel/Sampson ?) m. Grace Allen, Ethel m. George Sicklemoore, and Alexander (d.y. in Utah, Rheumatic Fever) were born in Utah. The family returned to PA bet. 1890-1900.
Next came Samuel Owen Smith, who "stayed on the home place" b. aft. 1853. I don't have a lot of info., but I think he was a businessman (maybe runnig the General store his brother William established in Cross Roads in 1875). Family story is that "Uncle Sam" helped pay for his nephew Hodge S. Smith's college education, but required that Hodge pay it back aft. graduation. Hodge became a chemist and worked for DuPont.
Last came John Thomas McAllister Smith b. aft. 1853, who lived in Stewartstown, PA and m. Ellen Norris.

Ellen Anderson McAllister's husband was Sampson Smith, Jr. s/o Sampson Smith and Elizabeth Duncan (d/o Andrew Duncan and Ann Smith, the d/o William Smith, Esq. - Andrew Duncan's neighbor and friend). My GG grandfather Rev. JAL Smith is apparently buried at Round Hill Cemetary in York, PA, as too are many of his family members.

If anyone knows abt. this group and esp. Ellen Anderson McAllister and her Anderson and McAllister pedigree (my brick wall) and John Johnson of Cecil Co., MD>York Co. PA (another wall - I've found a Robert Johnson b. 1736/40 in Cecil Co. and d. in London Grove Township,Chester Co. PA - he married Mary Chambers b. abt. 1732, of New Castle DE. Look familiar to anyone?) please respond.

I have all this information, and am feeling a bit discouraged at these dead ends. If no one can help me, I sure hope I've helped someone with my information. Thanks for your time and interest. - Sara
