I am trying to untangle the many, many WITMANs. Mine are centered in Lancaster and Berks Counties. I've wondered if the York County Witmans are part of my lines or altogether different families and now have the time to find out.
The 1810 Fed. Census for York Co. lists a Michael Witman living in Chanceford Twp. He seems to be the earliest Witman in York Co. I can find.
What I need to know is whether he is related to the Cocalico/Manheim, Lancaster Co. family of Christopher Witman Sr. (c1700-1770). Christopher had a son George Michael, b1733. Another Michael Witman kept a tavern in Ephrata before he was arrested and convicted of treason. The tavern keeper drops out of sight after he is pardoned, about 1780. Christopher's son also isn't documented after 1775 when he signs administration papers for his mother's estate.
I'm hoping to determine whether or not the Michael in Chanceford Twp. is the same as either of the Lanc. Co. Michaels.
Looking forward to hearing from anyone with York Co. WITMAN ties.
