Ammerman, George was born 9/29/1837 in Hawley, Wayne County, s/o Edward and Elizabeth (Young) Ammerman, natives of Monroe and Wayne Counties respectively. Edward and Eliz. married about 1830 and located in Hawley, he was employed as a sawyer and a farmer, but later in life he became a watchman for the PA. Coal Company. He held several local offices in Palmyra Township, Wayne County. He died 1879 aged 68 years, his wife died in Nov. 1891, aged 80. Both buried at Hawley. Held church membership in the Baptist Church. Children of Edward and Elizabeth; Lura, married Daniel Lilly of Wausau, Wisc. Eliza, wife of Mathias Cole of Palmyra twp.; George the subject of this abstract; John a railroad engineer of Carbondale, PA.; Catherine, married A.S. Millham, of Hawley; Mary wife of Daniel Bingham, an insurance agent of Hawley; William and Charles (twins), the former a furnitue dealer, the latter an insurance agent of Hawley; and Helen wife of A.R. Snyder, a conductor on the E.&W. V railroad, and a resident of Dunmore.
In 1844 George Ammerman was taken by his parents to White Mills, Wayne County, he enlisted as a private in Company C. 6th PA. Reserves, under Capt. John S. Wrigth, July 1861, and he was in many hotly-contested engagements, including; Drainsville, Fredericksburg, Bristol Station, South Mountain, Gettysburg, Antietam, the Wilderness and Mine Run. During the battle of the Wilderness, a mine ball struck his left knee cap, which necessitated the amputation of the limb.
In Hawley, December 20, 1871 he married Jane Snyder, they had 3 children; Cora; Roy, who lived in Carbondale, and Carl. The wife and mother was born 8/11/1847 and died 10/24/1897. (she was born in Carbondale,PA.)
Abraham Snyder (Mrs. Ammerman's father) was born in Greenfield, Luzerne County, PA., 12/20/1819, a son of Jacob and Rebecca (Kneiford) Snyder, natives of New York.
In 1848 Abraham Snyder moved to Hawley, where he first worked as a cabinet maker, later he served as superintendent in the PA. car shops. He died 9/5/1863, buried in Hawley cemetery. He married in Carbondale, PA., 9/14/1842 to Jane Womelsdorf, who was born in Reading, Berks County, PA., 12/25/1820, d/o Samuel and Mary (Fryer) Womelsdorf. Her father who was an iron forger died at Nanticoke, PA., To Abraham and Jane A. Snyder were born the following; France E. 5/22/1843, wife of Dighton Daniels, a clerk for the Erie Railroad; Emma born 5/5/1845 wife of Samuel Dodd, a carpenter and builder; Jane Abornn 2/19/1851; Helen 2/4/1853, wife of W. A. Gregg, a merchant of Hawley; Myron T. 8/2/1855, a druggist of Hawley; Samuel 12/25/1857, died 7/3/1863; and Mary 10/18/1861.
