Can anyone place this woman in a family from South Canaan?
Ann Elizabeth (Lizzie) Surname Unknown was b. July 3, 1865, South Canaan, Wayne Co., PA
(according to her marriage record to Conrad Peterson in 1906). There are several Annies and Lizzies – any of them could be “our” Lizzie, and I'm hoping someone can help us with our mystery.
“Lizzie” Hill, b. July 1865, was living in Jackson Twp., Monroe Co., PA (south of Wayne Co.) in 1910; she was a servant in the household of what looks like Charles Hofner, age 45. She was married 6 years (1894), had had a child, but none living. No male Hill is living in the household.
The census for 1900 in Jackson Twp. Is barely legible for most of it – ancestry.com has most of indexed as ___blank__ names! I have not been able to find a male Hill that could be her husband. He apparently died between 1901-1906.
In 1906, in Windgap, Northampton Co., PA, she (Mrs. Annie E. Hill, a widow) married Conrad Peterson, b. 1849, also a widower. (He was black/mulatto.)
In 1910, Conrad (black) and Lizzie (white) are living in Ruscombmanor, Berks, Pa, with a boy Charles, listed as Charles' stepson, 8 years old, and black. By this time, Lizzie says she had had 4 children, with 2 living (but only Charles living with them). Charles (Hill?) was born July 7, 1901 (we do not know where). The 1910 census is the only one that lists him as anything other than white. [They have a boarder, William Hoffner, 65 years old, living with them.]
Conrad died in 1915. In 1920, Lizzie is living in Nazareth, Northampton, PA with her son Charles (age 18) and her brother-in-law, William (age 67).
I have not found Lizzie after that 1920 census; I do not know whether she remarried or died.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated – this is one of our stubborn brick walls!
