Elizabeth Jewett Merritt

My great2 grandfather, Jeremiah Wright Merritt, was the son of Thomas Merritt and his first wife, Polly Jane Wright. I understand that you are related to Sarah Merritt (1840 - 1903) and Gates Manross Hunter, Sarah being the daughter of Thomas Merritt's second wife, Elizabeth Jewett (born March 25, 1817 in Mass., and died November 12, 1851 in New York).

Elizabeth Jewett was the daughter of Samuel Jewett (born 1780 in Mass) and Hepzibah Andrus (born 1781 in Mass.) Samuel Jewett and Hepzibah Andrus were married September 4, 1802 in Deerfield, Warren County, Penn. and had eight children. According to Merritt legendary data, Samuel Jewett was supposedly lost in the woods in Warren County and never found, other rumors were that he was murdered, who knows. In any event, his wife Hepzibah was listed as age 69 in the 1850 Deerfield, Warren County Census. She is buried in the Swift Cemetery, Hanover, NY, as is her son, Enoch Jewett. There is quite a bit of inter-marriage of Jewett family members to Merritt males of Chautuaqua County, NY.

I am quite interested in information you may have on Lovisa Manross, Robert Hunter, and descendants of the three daughters of Charles C. Merritt and his spouse, Esther L. Hunter (sister of Gates Manross Hunter).

Sincerely,
Ron Merritt

Hi, I am currently trying to receive information on that cemetery myself, I am trying to update my Veterans registry books here in my Veterans Affairs office and I too am having a hard time retrieving them records. I am in the process of trying to go the route of the Right To Know Law to gain access to the record of all of the 996 people buried there. If there is anything I can help you with, feel free to contact me on this site and I will see what I can do for you...The State Hospital is actually the caretakers of the burial grounds

Somewhere lys the answer. I have 2 friends who've beat breast cancer, so my prayers go to you and your courage.
My one grgr grandfather's mother was an Alice McGee, they came from Ireland to Toronto in 1832, I have no idea if she came on to PA or buried in Toronto.
I was raised in Venango County, still live there......my dad was from Warren and he moved back the last 15 yrs til he recently passed.
Somewhere a marriage should be recorded......if you've found a marriage with 2nd wife, maybe find first wife's death?
I'll have to think more. My dad moved to Mayville for 2 yrs.
ginny

Just a thought....ha e you looked under MacKay? I was told the names were often changed and the McGee was one of the names MacKay was changed to.
Well Ginny, I have checked the papers, but they didn’t do “research” at that time and there weren’t may online. So, I joined the Warren and Venango county genealogy clubs/societies a few years ago. I was born and raised in Plumer in Venango Co. Most of my McGees were in Brokenstraw Twsp in Warren Co. My aunt worked in the Clarion co Court house for years and did some research in all 3 counties, Warren, Forest and Clarion. She is a direct line from Christa too. Anyway, we’ve not been able to find a marriage.
I do know about NY, in fact my parents AND my grandparents, Fred and AnnaBelle Irwin Mcgee eloped to Mayville, NY. There isn’t any record there either, but then at that time there weren’t a lot of records in NY. I have found reference to her being the parents to my granddad and his siblings, but not of any marriage. I’ve also not found her death record. She died after my granddad was born which was 1893 or94, no one is even sure of that. We know Henry married Pricilla York sometime in 1894, so she died before that. Pricilla pretty much raised my granddad. So we think Christa died in or just after childbirth. Of course all my great aunts and uncles are gone now, so no one to ask!
She had an aunt named Christa also. She was the daughter of another Dyer. So, many times, I’ve gotten misinformation because if is of Christ Dyer DeFore, not my Christa. My Christa is buried in the Dyer plot in Youngsville.
I’m just beginning to revisit some church records. I’ve not worked on my genealogy for a while. I’m recovering from breast cancer, so I kind of put it on a back burner for a few months. Now, I have spare time and there are so many records now available on-line I thought I’d get back at it.
Thanks for any search you can do. I will pay you time, gas, copies, what ever if you find anything it would be great. It’s mostly marriage proof between Henry and Christa that I need most. I have lots of other info. I’d like to keep in touch. My email is lolli1944@yahoo.com.
Catch ya later, pat
I assume the Warren Library ran a newspaper search for Christina Dyer??? If not let me know. I have access.
Sometimes just a small 1 line was in the papers.

What census years did you find Henry and Chrstina in and where at? Do you know if they resided in Tidioute area?
If they ran away to get married, they'da gone to NY, many did in that area.
I would try to find the Methodist church(s) in Tidioute and write to them or call them to see if they had records. Catholics have records at their churches.
Dyer may have been spelled as Dwyer as you may well know. Warren papers weren't very good spellers......they didn't ask how to spell this or that which many just didn't in that timeframe.
My Dad and hsi parents were born/raised in Warren so I know it pretty well and have researched it alot. Tidioute is outside of Warren. I had family I researched there also. Amazed me, they were catholic and they opted to go be buried in the catholic cemetery in Warren and not in the section at Tidioute.
Were the Dyer's from Warren County also? There is also Forest County which borders Warren, the county seat there is Tionesta.
Ginny

Yes, I have checked all of those. I've been working on this since 1982. I got as far as Henry McGee and Christ Dyer and have lots on them and Christa's parents. I just cannot verify Henry's parents or their marriage. They were my great grandparents. I've been to the Warren Library. Much of what I do have started with census. My mom and her brothers remembered some info. Any thing you can find would be great. I thank you. I believe they were Methodist, at least my grandparents both were. And we have no Catholics that I know of. I have been to Tidioute Library and the cemetery. There are many McGee/Magees in the cemetery there. I believe they are Henry's ancestors, just have no proof of marriage of him to Christa! They may have been married in NY. That is the next step for me to go I think. Thanks again.
Pat

And, have you contacted the Warren County Courthouse for their marriage records??
If they were catholic, good chance you can get that info from the St. Elizabeth church in Tidioute, Warren, PA OR the St. Joseph's church in Warren, PA.
You could run a search of the churches in Tidioute, Warren, PA and write to any of them if you think they were married there. They were married in 1845, Deerfield. What I'm really trying to find is William's parents. They moved to Deerfield and then may have moved on, I don't know for sure. I thought if I could dig up some info on Elizabeth maybe William's name would come up as well. This has been my 'thorn in my side' branch for a good while, haha.

An ancestor of mine died in 1924, Polly Waldo, she was buried in one of the cemeteries that was flooded to make way for the Kinzua Dam. She was buried with her second husband, Orange Hammond. I am not sure if her remains were one of those that was moved, or if her remains were flooded over.
Does anyone have any information? I know that Polly Waldo died in 1924, she was living in Bradford, Warren County when she died. Her second husbands headstone is on Find A Grave, he is listed under the Riverview-Corydon Cemetery. She was buried with Orange, while her third husband, Joseph A Waldo, is buried with his first wife, Eunice C Johnson Waldo, Eunice and Polly were sisters.

I am actually working on the same line right now...I am looking for information on Benjamin's father Anthony Huff. I can't seem to find anything. I know that Benjamin Huff was born in New Jersey, but other than his father's name and aprox. year that he died, I can't find anything else on him.

I do keep finding an Anthony Huff who married an Anna, but if you go off the year he was born and the death date they give, he would have been about 108 years old when he died.

I would be glad to share any information I have...if it would help you

Adoption of Nephew

I have a nephew that was born Jan 28, 1956 at the Shadyside hospital to Barbara Joan Bumbaugh and father unknown. He was from Pittsburgh and was Catholic and attended Miami College in Florida.. Child was named Jerome Fulton and had red hair and was 7 lbs 14 inches long. His half sister would like to meet him. We were told that it was a private adoption by a lawyer in that area. It could have been with a family she knew from the Steubenville, Wintersville area. If this sounds familiar to anyone, please write to me... Thanks..

DeWitt G. Stilwell, wife and children

Hello,
By 1870 DeWitt G. Stilwell was living in Cornplanter, Oil City, PA.
He is with wife Susan Stilwell nee Duffy.
I know that they are buried there in Oil City.
I also know that he served in the Civil War from OH.
Is there anyone there than can get some tombstone pictures for me.
I know he was a merchant and that in 1872 he was part of the city council there in Oil City. As usual we find his
name listed as either D. G. Stilwell or J. D. Stilwell.
I am also looking for information on a Susan (Suzie) Elzora
Stilwell. In one paper I found her listed as a daughter of
DeWitt G. Stilwell. There could possibly be an earlier marriage for him?
I sure could use some help here. I know his father was
Cornelius Stilwell b: abt 1808 NY...But we cannot find anything out about him or his wife Caroline Rose Stilwell.
Hoping there could be a sketch of said town or county that
could shed some light and let us get past that brickwall for several years now.
I thank you all. I really appreciate your kindness.
Kind regards,
Martha~

Such an unusual surname. I recently learned of my distant connection to Ida Grawbarger, Grawbadger, Graubarger, and would like to establish a connection with other researchers for this line. Ida’s father is Alexander Grawbarger, b. 1833 in NY and d. 1918 in Michigan.
