My wife was born in the general area that you are probably looking for. She has heard it called Musser Valley as well Mosers Valley. She thinks it is in the general area of Beaver Springs near Route 522. Shale is all along that areaand a brick plant in Beaver Springs had a quarry in that area.

Jacks Mountain' south side is in Snyder County. It runs almost to Lewistown.

Here is a post that may help you understand the area.
http://www.pa-roots.org/data/read.php?707,615562

There is a historical society in Beaver Spring that is quite active.

Good luck.

Location of Mosers Valley

I have two ancestors who were born in Union County, PA in the late 1820s, before Snyder County was created. I know that they were both from a valley known as Mosers Valley, south of Jacks Mountain, but I am not sure if this valley is today located in Union or in Snyder. If anyone could help clarify this for me, I would appreciate it very much.

It seems like the valley is no longer known by this name, so the only clues I have had access to are from an 1830 publication online. In describing Union County, which then included Snyder, it says:

"South of Jacks Mountain lies Moser's valley. The country between this valley and the southern boundary of the county..."

This passage seemed to suggest to me that Mosers Valley might be fairly near the southern border and so would be in Snyder Co. today.

"A range has been traced from a point about one mile below New Berlin to the distance of about eight miles towards Moser's Valley."

This passage was in reference to shale; unfortunately it doesn't say in which direction from New Berlin Mosers Valley is located.

Any hints or suggestions for references would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I have a very strange problem. Harry J. Hartley was born in Erie County, lived his adult life in Beaver County, yet his obituary states he was buried in Mazeppa Cemetery in Mazeppa, Pa.
I searched Find A Grave and found this cemetery in Union County. He, unfortunately, was not listed. He was buried in May of 1961. Would someone please check the cemetery records for me. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Cheryl

I'm also looking for Elizabeth (Lytle) Mook, wife of Elias Mook. I'm also, separately, looking for Sarah (Lytle) Aikey, wife of Alexander Aikey.

Our Aikey line is so intermarried, that I am certain there will be some connection between Elizabeth & Sarah, but I am unsure what the connection is. There is a 26 year age difference between them, so my best guess at this point is that Sarah may be a niece of Elizabeth. This is not based on any fact, but rather on with how these families tend intermarry. At the bottom of this page, I have a chart I have created to keep just a few of the tangles straight: http://heathersgen.blogspot.com/2012/01/aikey-lines-to-freda...

For Elizabeth I have her birthday as Oct 1833. Her mother is Catherine Leitle, and lives with Elizabeth & Elias Mook in 1870 & 1880.

Elizabeth's daughter Sarah Catherine Mook married John Aikey - not my direct line, but yet another connection - the families married each other A LOT.

Sarah (Lytle) Aikey was born in Sept 1859, Died in Sept 1949. She married Alexander Aikey in 1877. I have pictures of both of them here: http://heathersgen.blogspot.com/2011/01/alexander-sarah-lytl...

Sarah Jane Aikey, niece of Alexander & Sarah (Lytle) Aikey, married John Mook. When Sarah died, John then married Mary (Oberdorf) Aikey, widow of Paul Aikey.

There are more - but as you can see, these families intermarried so frequently that I am sure I will find a connection to Sarah Lytle & Elizabeth Lytle eventually. My interest is in finding who the parents of Sarah Lytle were, I'm researching all of the others hoping to find more information on her family line.

Catharine Reus from Perry 1845

I have been able to piece together a little bit on the early days of this gg-grandmother. What I have so far on her:

Name: Catharine/Catherine Reus/Reece.. note there has been a vast variance in the spelling of both her first and last names.

The first documented provable site of her is in the Michigan, County Marriages, 1820-1935; It list her marriage to Jacob Fluri in St Joseph County Michigan on January 14, 1864.

From her obituary and from various census return she was born in whats became Snyder County.

I did some more digging and think I have found her living in the Gorden household on the 1850 census. Her obit notes that she had moved from Pennsylvania to Indiana at the age og 16 with her foster-parents.

I think I traced the Gorden family to a Willis Gorden on the 1840 census. The ages of children seem to match. Both returns were for Perry, Union County. That was in part of Union County that was made into Snyder County.

The 1870 and 1880 census's have her living with her husband and children in Cass County Michigan. Both census's also list a Jonathon Reus living with the family. He is identified as her bother.

So, everything seems to point to Catherine spending her early years in Perry. I find no other notice of her brother Jonathon and absolutely no document anywhere about her parent. What happened to the Reus's? I find no census record of that, or any likely spelling, name in Union County during the time frame.

Where would my next step be?

Bob

Catherine Reus/Reas born Union County ca 1844

In researching a gg-grandmother I think I have finally found something on her early days.

What was 'known' before: Unfortunately all information has to be dug up as there is no one to ask info of. What I had dug up was her obit from 1943. Her youngest son provided the information on it. It states that Catherine was born in Snyder County on March 24, 1844. She moved to Elkhart Indiana with her step parents when she was 16.

The first 'real' document had been the 1870 census that had her married and living in Cass County Michigan with her husband and children. Also living with them was a Jonathon Reas listed as her older brother.

Lately I have been able to find the marriage record of Jacob Fluri and Catherine Reus in St Joseph County Michigan on January 14, 1864. Now I find on the 1850 census in Perry, Union, Pennsylvania a Catherine Reus, age 6, living in the house of a Gorden family. It looks like a mother and several children. The head of house is listed as John Gorden age 18, and it lists a Mary Gorden age 41.

I think that this is very likely my gg-grandmother as the dates seem to match, the location matches and the name match. I have been unable to find any further information on Catherine's early life or anything more on the Gorden family.

Jopefully this will ring vells for someone.

Bob

I believe the old Winfield Cemeteries is now called the the Old Eyers Cemetery is located on State Route 304 just off of US 15 in Union Country. It has many Eyer graves, but also many other's from the Winfield area.

I have found that the Col. Kelly tree(s) on ancestry.com are very incomplete. I have started one (Colonel Kelly Family Tree) as a public tree on ancestry. It is also incomplete and has some undocumented entries. I tend to list undocumented people until I can research them and correct or remove as necessary. I have John wife as Anna Marie Caldwell? Do you have a list of his children? I know that I am related to Col. Kelly, but I cannot find link.

From the Family Histories book at the Fremont Library in Stuben County Indiana,

David (1780-1868) was born in Berks Co. PA. He died in Sandusky Co., and is buried in Quinshan Cemetery. Although it has not been proven, several Smith researchers believe that David's father was Peter Smith (1756-1827)who was born in Long-Swamp, Berks Co. and died in Wayne Co., OH.
In 1802 David married Catherine Blank (1783-1857), the daughter of Peter, a Revolutionary War soldier.
Jacob Kinney's pension is S22861 - applied 24 sept 1832 Union county Pa. He was 80 yrs old and says he was born in NJ and when he was young, moved to Northumberland county Pa.
Who did Jacob Kinney marry and what are the names of his children? was he married to Catherine Rau/Row? If so, what were her parents names?
Jacob Kinney was born abt 1852 NJ
Was Martin Kinney born 1776 one of his sons?
was Philip Kinney born 1812 one of his grandsons?
There is a possibility that Jacob Kinney's father could be Jacob Kinney baptized 5 april 1719 First Reformed church of Raritan, somerset, NJ, son of Mordecai Mckinney born 1686 Scotland and Mary Sebring. The Mordecai Mckinney book, "Some descendants of Mordecai McKinney", says that Jacob Kinney born 1719 moved to Northumberland county Pa and I believe one or two of his brothers also moved there.
Is there any info available on the Kinney family from Northumberland / Union county/ snyder county Pa and possibly in New Jersey they came from.

Hi All!

I'm not sure where my Smith's fit into your line - or if they do.

The farthest I can go back is to John Daniel Smith (1788-1850). Then to his son, Daniel C. (1821-1894) and then to my 2nd Gr. Grandfather, Joseph W. (1852-ca. 1910). They all lived in either Lycoming Co. near Moreland/Muncy or in Union Co. around White Deer. In fact, my Grandmother and her siblings were all born in White Deer. I believe that our family also took part in milling.

I do know that there were not very many Smith's in this part of the country so I believe the majority of them were related, but I do not know how at the present. I would be happy to share what little I know with you.

I also have seen posts about the "short finger" trait for the Smith family and wonder if this is a part of our family tree as well. Genetics are so very interesting!

Thanks -

Laresa

Blondie, I am not sure if I ever responded to your answer.

My Smiths were gunmakers only during the Revolution, but they established mills for grist, flourn and lumber. Residence was White Deer, Northumberland and Union Counties, PA.

If any of this connects, I am at ddeise@verizon.net

I would like to establish contact with any descendants of the Simon Walter and Catherine (Vogt) Fought family who lived in the Union/Snyder county area from 1791 through about 1856 when most of the family moved to Avilla, Noble County, Indiana.

Elias Smith or Catherine Richardson Smith

Looking for information on Elias Smith, born around 1815 somewhere in Pennsylvania, married to Catherine Richardson around 1834 (also born around 1815). The 1850 census has them living in Kelly Township, Union County, PA with 10 children. By 1860 I can find an Elias who was a laborer elsewhere in PA, but am not sure if this is the same man as none of the family is listed. I am a descendant of their son Henry. Thanks to anyone with any leads.
