I am a descendant of Ichabod Hill. I am searching for death and burial information for his son, James D. Hill and his wife, Lucy. They were residents of Jackson, Susquehanna, PA and moved to Canton, Bradford, PA. I am trying to find 4 things about them:
1. Lucy’s maiden name (I believe it is Hollis)
2. James’ date of death and where – is there a copy of a death certificate
3. Lucy’s date of death and where – is there a copy of a death certificate
4. Their burial site

James D. Hill was a deacon at the Canton Baptist church in 1879 at went to help start a church in Ward Township, Tioga, PA. I am assuming that he died in Ward Township after that date. In my aunt’s notes she gave the date as 26 Mar 1887. Lucy d. 09 Mar 1872 in Ward Township, Tioga, PA. The Baptist Association of Canton printed a notice in their publication that she passed.

I have found James’ parents and other siblings, but cannot seem to locate him or Lucy’s last name. I know there is a connection to the Hollis family (Abram Hollis and Laura Rouse) which is why I believe that Lucy’s last name was Hollis.

I have found references to James in several books regarding the area. I have also been in contact with the Baptist Church in Canton, but there doesn’t seem to be any other records than what I have. Would there possibly be an obituary or a cemetery listing that might have a record of him?

Thank you,
Susan Barrow Spaulding

Hi I am looking for any descendant of the Charles Thomas Lane family - Charles was born 1893 to John W Lane and Johanna Murphy of Middletown PA, married Florence in Broome County NY. Charles Lane and his relatives were pall bearers for my mother;s family, John Kinsley, his daughter Lizzie Kinsley Griffiths & her husband Jos A Griffiths in Broome Co. I have found pictures in my parents' house, and think some of them might be of Charles & Florence Lane, if Florence went by nickname "Nan". I would like to give these pics to interested descendants. Of course I would like to know more abt the Kinsley Lane connection.

I'm trying to unravel a couple of mysteries.

Merritt Goodell was born abt 1842 in Windsor, Broome, NY. I believe his parents were Joseph Goodell and Amelia (unknown). I've found him in the 1855 and 1865 NYS census's and then he shows up in the 1880 census for Jackson Township. By then he is married to Ida Bills and there are 2 children listed - William H. age 18 and Charles E. age 1. They would eventually have my great grandmother Geneva (1881).

I'm trying to find out when and where Merritt died. It had to have been before 1892 because Ida went on to remarry Joseph Tonkin in that year.

I'm also looking for a previous marriage for Merritt. William H (1863) listed in 1880 could not be Ida's son - she would have been 11 yrs old at the time of his birth. I found William's obituary and he also had a sister Ella (1867) who was living in Windsor with her grandmother in 1880.

I cannot find any of them in the 1870 census for either Windsor or Susquehanna County.

If anyone has any information on Merritt, William H. or Ella I'd really appreciate it!

Lynn

My great grandfather Joseph F. Robinson (b. 1865) shared a lakeside cabin in Susquehanna County with two friends, one of whom was named Morris. Reportedly they took the first two letters of each man's surname and dubbed the place Lake RoMoBe. I recently found this picture of my grandfather (on far right) with two other men in a rural location, and wonder if they might be Morris and Be___. Any leads welcomed!

I sent you some info on the sons of John Lane/Johanna Murphy a month ago. Looking at the sons' wives name, one Lane had wife Florence, another with wife Loretta, all living in Johnson City. I did indicate that along with Chas & Dan Lane, John Bonaventure Clark was pall bearer for my family members in 1939, 2 funerals in 1952. John B Clark along with his wife Johanna F Mooney, were my mother (Elizabeth Griffiths, dtr of Lizzie Kinsley & Jos Griffiths) godparents in Dec 1923 at St James Church. JB Clark's father was Francis Clark of Silver Lake. Francis may have had relatives named Florence & Loretta Clark, they might have married into the Lane families.Anybody know more abt this, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you, at momla1956@yahoo.com. I have a picture dated 1935 of my mother, her father and a couple identified as "Charlie & Nan" at the 1000 Islands.

If you are related to Mariche Hamlin, you should match both of us. There is also a test through 23andMe that is cheaper, and we can still find your results.
Pauline

I am Margaret Murphy's ggg granddaughter. If Timothy's brother is John L Murphy, then his daughter Johanna married John L Lane. I have not been able to verify the relationship between John and Timothy.

I am descended from Johanna Dacey (1809-1869)and Timothy Murphy(1808-1890)from Bandon, County Cork. They arrived in New York aboard the Free Trader on June 25, 1847 and eventually settled in Middletown, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Childres: Mary, Margaret, Julia (my g grandmother), Catherine, John, Daniel.

I have several other Murphy connections in Susquhanna County. My gg grandmother, Ellen Howard's first husband was Michael Murphy who died in Susquhanna County in 1845. Her second husband, John Dugan, was my gg grandfather.

I know our family was also related to the Lanes of Susquehanna County, who married into the Mupphy family of Silver Lake. I am not certain of the connection.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone with Murphy connections in Susquahanna County

It looks like they lived in Endicott, Broome, NY at the time of death. I found this obituary in the July 11, 1956 Binghamton Press....lots of info here! He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Augusta Foote; seven daughters, Mrs. Paul (Kathryn) Turner of Newark, N.J., Mrs. Dana (Wanda) Walker of Denver Colo., Mrs. James (Lorraine) Little of Endicott, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Canfield of Binghamton, Mrs. John (Bette) Serkez of Maine, Mrs. Stephen (Gracie) Portorsnok of Mary Esther, Fla. and Mrs. Albert (Beverly) Wenner of Endicott; five sons, Gerald L. of Endicott, Charles O. of Fort Worth, Texas, Glenn R. of Staten Island, James O. of Nashua, N.H., and Bruce E. Foote of Binghamton; 29 grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Rogers of Lovelton, Pa., Mrs. Harry Kieper of Noxen, Pa., Mrs. Earl Lewis of Hunlock's Creek, Pa., and Mrs. Hugh Cassin of Tunkhannock, Pa.; three brothers, Alva of Culley, Pa., Henry of Sugar Run, Pa., and Cecil Foote of Binghamton. He was employed in the
Sole Leather Tannery of Endicott Johnson Corp. for the last
23 years. The body was moved to the Allen Memorial Home 511-513 East Main St., Endicott where the family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

On the same page is the funeral notice-it was held Friday at 11 a.m., Rev. Paul Griffis officiating and he was buried at Riverhurst Cemetery.

I wasn't able to find anything on Augusta's death.

I am answering some of my own questions here as I have located Susquehannaheadstones where the owner has put photos of both Ephraim (1773-1838) and his second wife, Sarah (ca. 1786-1870), b CT. Both are buried in the Snyder-Rush cemetery, and today I entered them into findagrave. I earlier found Sarah's death in the 1870 mortality census. Ephraim first married Jemima Farnham and lived in Ashford, CT, where they had six children. Some give the date of her death as 1804 (more likely); some, as 1824. Ephraim is living in Rush in 1810 with a woman of Sarah's age. My question now is why did they not have his children with him if his wife had died, all of them 18 or younger?

The name "Surzardus" intrigues me. My ggrandfather was named "Sizzardus" (Zardus), a very unusual name. The last name was Lacy/Lacey. I have been unable to trace him except on census records with his wife Margaret and five children. Zardus was born in CT c. 1798, later moved to Venango Co, PA, and then to Mahoning Co, OH. B. 1854 It will pull up several census records. Lucinda's husband was Orson. In 1930 Lucinda was living in Trenton,Mercer, NJ with Raymond Green (her son???).
Also The Heckman Family Tree has Lucinda and family listed. If you are not a member I can scan info and seed it to you via email.
Let me know
Pam

Hi Dave,

I see many messages from you searching various families in the Susquehanna County area. I too have many ancestors from there. Surnames Quinlivan, Quailey, Keenan(Silver Lake, not related to Friendsville), Kanes, etc... I saw in your tree John Gaffney, his wife Eliza, and son Spencer. Eliza Gaffney was my GGGAunt, Eliza Quinlivan. She was born in Forest Lake, just next door to Silver Lake, and Friendsville. I was wondering how you were related. As for the Kane families, I know that there were two or maybe more Kane families that settled in this area. One Kane family was from the parish of Kiladysert and the other from Kilfiddane. These two parish's are right next to each other in Co. Clare, Ireland. Let me know..I can give you access to my Quinlivan tree if you'd like.

Jimmy Q.

Hello,
Regarding VANCE, M. Floretta Darling 1850--1930 (w/o Lorenzo). Are you sure about this? I have seen her mentioned as a daughter of Lorenzo: Margaret Floretta (Etta) Vance (2 July 1850 - 21 August 1930) who married Abner Ellis in 1874 in Binghamton, Broome, New York; and given the dates of Lorenzo and his other wives, this seems to make more sense.

I'm very interested in discussing this family further.
Regards,
Jamie.

John William Evans - Pennsylvania and Hawaii

According to military records, John William Evans was born on February 16, 1880 in Plymouth, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA. The year of his birth varies according to various documents produced during his life, i.e. children's birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, military records, etc.
According to John's marriage certificate, his parents were William C or J Evans and Catherine Llewelyn or Llelyen. According to various census records and stories passed down to his children, his parents were of Welsh-Irish ancestry and both were born in Wales.
Supposedly, John had a least two sisters, they were named Charlotte and Catherine, names he used for his own children.
I can trace John after he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1903. I cannot find any proof of John or his family before April 1903.
I need HELP in locating birth records, census records, family members, etc.
After spending time in the military in California and the Philippines, John left the Army in Hawaii in 1912. He eventually married Philomena Silva or Silva Torres on the Island of Maui, and they had thirteen (13) children. John died in 1947.
Please HELP me find information on my grandfather.

I believe that the Baltimore Sun published her obituary Nov 19, 1937, p. 26, but I don't have access. :( (I searched their online archive and got a hit for Winan.)

You could try contacting a public library in that area to see if their reference librarian could help get a copy.

The Enoch Pratt Free Library has what you need:
http://www.prattlibrary.org/locations/maryland/index.aspx?id...

You were so correct! I located Sybilla Bolles Winans on the MD Death Index for Baltimore, MD, for 1937: she died Nov 18, 1937> Thanks!!!
