So far per my research of my husband's Richart line, I have found no connection to Sullivan Co.nor have I found anything to indicate that the name was German. I have the line back to the 1760s Mt. Bethel, founded as a Scots-Irish community. My husband's Richart line is:
1-William Richart(never Wilhelm) d. 1770 Upper Mt. Bethel, Northampton Co., PA. This was a Scots-Irish community formerly known as Hunter's Settlement, originally it was Craig's Settlement -- begun by 16 Scots-Irish families led by James Craig from Ireland. William Richart bought his first land there in 1763.
2-Robert Richart b. ca 1748-1749. The Court would not separate William's land to give to his children. The court assessed it and Robert as eldest son and heir at law, bought it for the assessment. He sold the land in 1790. Between 1790-1800 Robert moved to Greenwood, Columbia Co., PA.
3. Joseph Richart b. Dec 25, 1785 in Upper Mt. Bethel, Northampton Co., PA. Moved to Greenwood, Columbia Co., PA, as a boy with his father. Lived in Greenwood in 1814 when he married Jane Staddon of Greenwood, a daughter of Samuel Staddon of Columbia Co., PA.
4. Jared Richart b. 1815 in Greenwood, Columbia Co., PA. On the 1840 census his parents Joseph and Jane Richart and 2 sons (Jared and George)lived in Hepburn, Lycoming Co., PA.
In 1842, Jared Richart married Hannah Wright in Lycoming Co.; she was a Lycoming Co. girl. 1850 census Joseph Richart and Jane Staddon had moved back to Greenwood, Columbia Co. as had their son Jared Richart and his wife Hannah Wright. From 1850 to their deaths, Joseph and Jane Richart lived in either Greenwood or Orange, Columbia Co.,PA. However, their son George stayed in Lycoming Co.and married there. Their son Jared and his wife Hannah moved back to Lycoming Co. after the 1850 census.
5-Phoebe Angelina Richart was born in 1858 in Loyalsock, Lycoming Co., PA. She lived in Lyc. Co. all of her life. In 1875 she married Joseph F. Moon in Lycoming Co. and lived in Lyc.Co. until she died in 1926 in Montoursville.
For sure, this line did moved back and forth between Greenwood, Columbia Co. and towns in Lycoming Co. I have been unable to determine a connection between Joseph Richart and the John Richart of Lycoming Co. who was the father of Zebulon Richart of Lycoming Co. My theory is that a possible connection is that John Richart (father of Zebulon) was the son of William Richart of Derry who was Robert Richart's brother. If my theory is correct, John Richart and Joseph Richart would have been cousins. So far, 2013, I have no proof to substantiate the theory. Years ago I corresponded with Jim Richart who was working on the John Richart-Rachel Funston line (parents of Zebulon Richart). I hope he has found something new.
