COLEMAN

I am interested in corresponding with anyone researching COLEMAN (KULLMAN)in Somerset PA.
Looking for info on Johannes (John) COLEMAN (KULLMAN). He came to Bedford/Somerset county in the late 1700's and settled in Brothers Valley. When did he arrive from Germany? What part of Germany did he come from. Married Susanna Faust about 1779. I believe they had 10 children. Any information on Johannes would be appreciated.

Thank you Brett for the quick response. It looks like we still have some digging to do on the Colemans of Somerset county. I too am a descendant of John and Susanna Faust Coleman and their son John Fredrick and Rachel Stahl Coleman, who left Somerset county and migrated to, as near as I can tell, Knox county Ohio. If I uncover anything further on the original Colemans, I will be sure to let you know.
Thanks again
Lew

I am a descendant of John and Susanna Faust Coleman. I am not aware that it is known when and from which part of Germany John came. He came with at least or psossibly 3 brothers to the Somerset Co. area possibly from Berks Co., PA. His brothers were George (wife Barbara Krafft), Nicholas (wife Frederica Herman) and possibly a Frederick Coleman who apparently left the area in the 1780's or so.

This may be part of my family also. My 2great grandmother Susanna, I believe was the daughter of John Frederick Coleman and Rachael Stahl. John Frederick Coleman was the son of Johannes (John ) Coleman and Susanna Faust. My information comes from the family search files. Johannes was born 1760 in Germany , and his father may have been John Jacob Kulman.
My 2great grandmother married Jeremiah Paxton 8 Aug. 1833, Wayne Co. Ohio. Their daughter Amanda married David Graber 24 Dec. 1859 Wayne Co. Ohio. Their son was my grandfather John David Graber

I Think that Susanna Faust and John Coleman are my relatives. My great great grandmother, Susanna Coleman, was married to Jeremiah Paxton. I think that Susanna's father was Frederick Coleman and Rachel Stahl. Do you have any info on Fredericks children and their spouses? The Colemans are one of my brick walls. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I am 9th generation from John Jacob Kulman born 1725 in Wuerttenburg, Germany. He had 3 children. George, John Nicholas, and Johannes John Kuhlman/Kullman/Kohlman/Coleman. Not sure how the name progessions came about. John Frederick Coleman was born 10/29/1792 to Johannes John Kohlman. He married Rachel Stahl 1814 in Somerset County PA. I have seen the other post referencing the Laurel Messenger for the children's names and birthdates. Some of the birth dates I have are different. Perhaps further research will verify correct dates and they can be updated/corrected in these threads.

Jonas b. 8/20/1814 Brothers Valley PA. d. 10/15/1864 Bristol MN
m. Sarah Ann Rice, daughter of Frederick Rice and Sarah Smith. b. 8/4/1827 (
Susanna b.12/25/1815 (perhaps f_graber can resolve this discrepancy)
Elizabeth b. 1/26/1817 m John Jacob Shultz, son of Johan Shultz and Catherine Baker. 3/10/1844 d. 9/13/1885
Benjamin Cyrus b. 9/25/1818 m. Isobel Martha Cox 7/16/1844 d. 2/14/1913

Rebecca b.9/24/1823
Margaret b. 9/1824
Alexander b.12/4/1824 (obviously Margaret and Alexander could not be born 3 months apart. Benjamin and Philip were twins. Possible Rebecca and Margaret were twins both born 9/24/1823) m. Susanna
Frederick b.1/4/1827
Henry b. 10/14/1827
Catherine b.12/6/1831
Sarah b. 3/26/1834
Phoebe Ann b. 5/25/1836 m. Jacob W. Heinrick 4/20/1868 d.11/21/1911
John b. 1/13/1839 m. Anna d. 8/11/1910
James b. 1843 in Brown, Knox County, Ohio

1850 Census lists Henry, Catherine, Sarah, Phoebe, John, and James still living at home in Brown, Ohio

All this information was compiled by my great Aunt in a book she has put together. I would like to update my copy of this book. Would each of you responding in this thread list your relation to John Frederick? I am Bryson Coleman. From there is Benjamin Clary Sr, Benjamin Everette Jr, Benjamin Everette Sr, David Wilson, Benjamin Cyrus, John Frederick.

I am the gggrandfather of George E. Coleman. His wife was Mary Jane Stollback/Stotlebuck. Their first child, Margaret, was born in Pennsylvania on 07 Jan 1842. I have a piece of undocumented paper from another researcher that says they were from Somerset County.

Based on census extrapolation, George was born about 1820 and Mary Jane about 1821.

Their next child I have a record of was Elizabeth who was born in Missouri in 1847.

On the 1880 census Mary Jane was listed as Colman. I have a suspicion that George E served in the Civil War and died while in the service. I've found a service record with an alternative spelling of Coalman. I haven't requested the full service record yet.

Does this fit in with anyone's Coleman research?

Thanks!

Martha

My family is related to this Coleman line by Rachel Coleman, daughter of Benjamin Cyrus Coleman and sister to David Wilson Coleman. Rachel married Benjamin Smalley August 8, 1872 in Winneshiek County, Iowa. They are buried close to Isabel Martha Cox and supposedly Benjamin Cyrus Coleman, even though he is not named on the tombstone, in Burr Oak, Iowa. Do you know who the parents are of Isabel Cox and if she is related to Susannah / Savannah Cox that married Moses Coleman?
Thanks, Diane

I have isabel as the daughter of David and Mary Cox. Don't have a maiden name for Mary. The birthdates for isabel (4/12/1820) and savannah/susannah(12/21/1824) are close enough they could be sisters (cool, sisters marrying brothers huh?). I don't have parental names for susannah though.
