Hon. SOLOMON WESTBROOK [No. 23353] s. of SOLOMON and Margaret [DeWITT] WESTBROOK, was b. April 5, 1793, on his father's homestead, which bordered the west bank of the Delaware River in Delaware Twp., and was baptized in the old Walpack Dutch Church. on Dec. 10, 1811, he was m. by Rev. J. Force to HANNAH COOLBAUGH, who was b. Nov. 25, 1790, at Coolbaugh, Pa. dau. of Judge JOHN and SUSANNAH [VanCampen] COOLBAUGH of that place. [Cf. Coolbaugh Family In America, p. 16]. She was bp. Aug. 2, 1791, in the old Dutch Church at Shawnee. In 1819 Mr. WESTBSROOK sold his farm to his brother JACOB and purchased another in Middle Smithfield Twp., Monroe Co, PA., where he resided ten years. He early became well known throughout the Delaware Valley. He was Captain of a regiment of State Militia in which his brother JACOB was Major and his brother JOHN a Colonel. The first board of county commissioners of Pike County resolved to levy a tax of half a cent upon the dollar on all taxable property in the county to defray the probable expenses of the county for the year. They then proceeded to the appointment of assessors in those townships in which none had been elected according to law. One of the latter townships was Delaware, in which SOLOMON WESTBROOK, JR. was appointed assessor, with Cooper Jagger and Everett HORNBECK assistants. He early became a member of Zebulon Lodge No. 179, FAM at Coolbaugh. In 1823 he was elected Sheriff of Pike County serving a term of three years. In 1829 he sold his farm to his brother-in-law, John V. COOLBAUGH, and removed to Philadelphia, Pa. for a year. But he returned in 1836 and carried on a store at Bushkill for a year, while for five years he conducted a hotel at Dingmans Ferry. While there -- in 1832 -- he again embarked in the mercantile business and also carried on merchandising at Tafton, 1835-36. In Pike Co. he bought a home of William SPERING at Blooming Grove in 1827. This same year he also rebuilt the old mill at Blooming Grove. In 1835 he returned to the old stone house on the homestead. In 1837 a paralytic stroke nearly incapacitated him for business, depriving him of the power of speech while he was yet in the prime of manhood. In 1842 he returned to Blooming Grove, where he and his wife spent their remaining years, his sons taking charge of his lumber business, which they carried on for many years. He d. in 1852 and his wife in 1874. Their children all received the rite of infant baptism at the old Walpack Dutch Church.

4. LaFAYETTE, b. Dec. 14, 1824, near Dingmans Ferry, was bp. in the Walpack Dutch Ch. Aug. 31, 1825. He recd. an excellent education for that day at Delaware Academy. He became proficient as a surveyor, & in 1850 & 1853 was elected County Surveyor of Pike County, serving 2 terms with marked success. He was considered an authority on the location of land in this region & at 9one time he assisted in making a map of Pike Co. Throughout his life he was more or less occupied with surveying. In 1856 he was chosen to represent Pike Co. & Monroe Co. in the Pa. Legislature, and so well did he perform his duties that he was re-elected the following year. In 1862 he assisted in raising Co. B., 151st Pa. Vol. Inf. & entered the service with the rank of 1st Lieut. on March 7, 1863, he was made Captain, & this rank he held until honorably discharged July 27, 1863, at the expiration of his term. While in the service he was never absent from his command one moment, & he took part in several important engagements, including the battles of Chancellorsville & Gettysburg. On his return home he resumed his work as a surveyor, & he also engaged attenstively in lumbering at Blooming Grove, where he resided until 1882. In 1874 he was elected County Surveyor again, against his own wishes. In 1866 he was again chosen Representative in the State Legilature, his district being changed to Pike & Monroe Cos. His ability & experience in the services of so great value to his fellow-citizens that, in 1867, he was re-elected without opposition. In 1877 & 1878, under the new constitution, he again represented Pike Co. in the Legislature, each co. ded for many yrs. as one of the leading Democrats of this section & at various conventions, State & National, he took an honorable part in the work of the party. At times he held location offices, including shcool director. During all these years, he conducted his lumber business in connection with surveying, but in 1882 he rm. to Stroudsburg, relinquishing a portion of his business cares, his investments, the East Stroudsburg National Bank. His active & cultured mind made him a most agreeable companion. Socially he was such esteemed. He was identified with the Masonic Fraternity, having been a Master Mason in the Lodge at Milford. During the Civil War he recd. a Certificate from the Grand Lodge. He m. Oct. 1876, EMMA HILL, dau. of LUTHER & Abbie [DILDINA] HILL of Newton, N.J. Their only child d. in infnancy.
