Hopefully, someone out there has some connection to the Feihl family and can help solve the mystery of his origins.

Buried at Laurel Hill.

Also looking for a death record for her mother, Maria Holcombe, without success. Last record of her is in the 1880 census when she was living with her daughter Frances and husband, Edward Kraft.
Thank you so much for your help it was very helpful. I thought that the first child was a girl because they write home to Sweden in the beginning of 1892 that the girl had died. I can’t find any death for the girl and I don’t know her name but I think that it will be enough. They moved home to Sweden, Hilma in 1893-94, and Hjalmar, around 1898.
Thanks again Bertil Landegren
I am searching after information about two Swedes who lived in Philadelphia for some years about 1890.
Male Hjalmar Angered (Johansson), artist, landscapes painter, born 2 July 1858 in Sweden and his wife Hilma Angered, born Strandberg, author, born 31 Aug 1888 in Sweden. They got married in USA 18 Sept 1889.

I only found him at 707 Spurce, Philadelphia in City Dir. 1890.

They went back to Sweden in 1898 or some years earlier and died in Sweden, Hjalmar 1919 and Hilma 1927.

What I am interested of are their children. I have information that they hade two children. One girl probably born in Philadelphia 1890 who died only some months after birth. One other child which I don’t know anything about. Can anyone help me find anything about them and their life in America because there will be a biography about them written in Sweden.
Thanks Bertil Landegren Dalsland Sweden
Frances, my great great grandmother, was born in 1843 in France. Raised in New York by a family named Holcombe; family story is that she was adopted - circumstances and exact origins unknown. Also know little to nothing about the Holcombes. Frances married Edward Phillipe Auguste Kraft in 1864 in Philadelphia and dies in 1883. She is buried in the Kraft plot in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Any information concerning Frances' early life would be invaluable. Mother's name (adoptive mother) may have been Maria Holcombe. Cannot find Maria after 1880 census when she lived with Edward and Frances. No record of her death.

I am looking for relatives of Gottlob Feihl, my great grandfather. He came to Philadelphia from Wurttemberg, Germany in 1888, married Katharine Blank of Binselberg, Schwabisch Hall, Baden-Wurttemberg in 1895. Birthdate 9 Oct. 1861/62; died 7 June 1907; buried in Northwood Cemetery, Philadelphia. Lived at 1338 Myrtlewood Avenue; worked as a teamster/driver. I cannot trace him back to Germany - would like to find town of origin, parents' names, brothers, sisters, etc. Did any other family members come to Philadelphia? Surname has been spelled many ways including Fiehl, Faehl, Fiel, Feil - but Feihl is the correct spelling.

If you have time, could you check one more obituary for me for Walter Edward Patterson's wife, Elizabeth "Eliza" Saunders Patterson who also died in Doylestown, 29 Nov 1854. I have never been able to determine who her parents were so maybe something is listed about that.
Thanks again so much, you have been so much help and if there is anything I can do to assist you do not hesitate to ask.
Mike Patterson

Thank you so much. I was really excited to see the Sunny Side Farm mentioned as I have been trying to determine if my Great Grandfather Walter Francis Patterson Sr (son of Walter Edward) was the person who sold Fordhook Farm in Doylestown, to Washington Atlee Burpee in the 1880s. I knew my Walter Francis owned it in 1876 from a land record I found, but I wasn't sure he got it from his father. I also know Walter Francis still lived in Doylestown in 1880 from the census, but I am not sure if he was the last owner before Burpee, so your assistance at least helps place where there were living prior when Walter Edward died.
Thanks again so much.
Mike Patterson

I saw you have a family tree with Francis C Harley in it and I think he could be my father's brother. I never knew my father, or any relatives on his side, but was told the names of his siblings, and that his brother was killed in the war. I found them listed on the 1940 census, and am looking for any info on my family. Can you help? Thanks, Tina

Hi,

I have found some interesting birth records on the Family Search web site, here:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1951739
I take it that these are transcriptions form a register that was kept, and there seem to be digitized images available, but only to members of LDS. I have a few questions:
1. In the original images, is the address of the parents listed? Any other useful info?
2. Does any body have access to these images on line who would be willing to check a few entries for an address?
I have some slippery ancestors with fairly common names who moved around a lot, and if I could nail down a particular couple to a specific address at a set date, it would help me sort them all out.
Thanks in advance!

First of all thank you for you quick reply.

I have Emily J.Chapman listed in the 1920 Census as a border on N. 21st. Street, Philly. That is where I lost her.
She was 77. Her maiden name was Venable. By all the census accounts she boarded with a lot of people after her husband died in 1867. There is a Venable Family section in Monument Cemetery in Beverly NJ. Emily has a stone there with her birth date but no death date. The lady that takes care of the paper work there said there is no record of any one being buried in that plot.

After years of searching off and on a few weeks ago I came across her on Find A Grave which was entered June of 2012, as being buried at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, in Bala Cynwyd, PA. I contacted them and they sent me info that they had. There was a copy of a note written Sept. 10, 1928 giving the Nazarene Home for the Aged to bury Emily in lot 278 Rockland Section. It was signed Mary E. Johns, et al lot owner and Annie G. Grillet, lot owner and it is the Grillet Family Section. There is nothing on Emily's grave.

Now I wonder what relationship Mary and Annie were to Emily if any or were they employed at the home or residents.

Yes, I have look the last few days and can not find anything on the home.

Thank you for you info and sorry to have made this reply so long.

Regards,

I also have been very lucky to find some 2nd cousins in NJ and in Washington DC.

Thank you for your help and the info on the Home.
Good luck in your search and if I happen to find anything out about the home I will contact you.

The situation in my family may well have been exceptional, but a short history might help some of you who are looking for information regarding orphans at St. Vincent's.

My mother gave birth out of wedlock in 1942 in Washington DC, at St. Ann's Infant Asylum and Maternity Home. Her son remained at St. Ann's to the age of 16 months, but was then transferred to St. Vincent's, since St. Ann's only housed infants. Catholic Charities was able to assure me that her son (who was ultimately raised by her sister) had never been adopted or placed in foster care in the Philadelphia Diocese by St. Vincents, although no records from St. Vincent's itself exist.

My point is that it's possible that some children who were placed in St. Vincent's as orphans, even infants, may have been born somewhere else. Unlike St. Vincent's, St. Ann's had a record of my mother's son's birth AND of his transfer to St. Vincent's. In the records her son was able to consult at St. Ann's in 2012 (which relocated to Hyattsville, MD over 30 years ago), the father was identified by nationality, age, and occupation but not by name, whereas all the current information for the mother was included.

So if you have reason to think that a Catholic birth mother may have given birth near Phila., eg in the NYC region, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Northern Virginia, or the DC metropolitan area rather than in Phila. proper or at St. Vincent's, be sure to check these other possibilities. It could be that these other states have more helpful policies on brith and adoption records than Pennsylvania does.

Do you have access to ancestry.com? I did a quick search and found Anna Grillet in the 1930 census at 813 S 49th St. Looks like she had a small boarding house there. She was a widow. she is not listed in the 1920 census for the Naz Home.

There were several Mary E Johns in Philadelphia.. Hard to distinguish among them.

In the 1920 census for the Nazarene Home (2032 Columbia St, 47th ward), there was a Mary M Jones listed as a resident, age 82. Maybe that is your connection?

Not sure how else I can help. Why don't you order her death certificate, now that you have more details? Also, research for her death notice, if there was one. You can contact the Free Library of Philadelphia.. They do lookups for a modest fee, if you're not in the Philly area.

Have you tried searching the public and private trees on ancestry.com for Emily Chapman? Maybe someone has her posted. Also, search the Phila Church records on ancestry... She might be named there.

Findagrave is a super resource. You got lucky. I've had similar surprise finds by volunteers posting tombstone photos there.

If I make progress on finding the Nazarene Home records, wherever they are, if they werent destroyed, will let you know.

He'd just hang and I always peaked at the letters. She lived quite a comfortable life to he age of 106 surviving far beyond her daughters. None of her six grandchildren ever wanted anything to do with her.

Your Emily Chapman isn't listed in the 1920 census for Nazarene Home for Aged. She had to have entered sometime after the 1920 census was done. She died in 1928 and so isn't listed in the 1930 census either.

The Nazarene Home was closed in the 1960s. Residents (and possibly, records of earlier residents ???) were moved to a retirement home in Wyndmoor (just outside Philadelphia, in Montgomery County). I am not sure if the old records are in the archives of this retirement home or if they were destroyed. Ownership/management changed several times since then, but the facility is still there. I think it is called Springfield Residences today.

I've been meaning to follow up on this to find out if there is a paper trail re my great grandmother, Mary Hoffman, who lived there from about 1946 to 1950.

The Nazarene Home is a big mystery. Very little about the Home is online even though many elderly people, many who were immigrants, lived there at one time or another. Certainly many had children and grandchildren. Their great grandchildren would be alive today.

I have put in a lot of hours trying to find photos of the residents, or of the building, with little success.

If anyone reading this knows of someone who might have photos of the residents, or any recorded documents about the Home, please post a reply.

Hi PHelfand46, Many thanks for your reply. Not thinking that the line through their names meant they cancelled the trip. Its odd Nanette travelled back on her own unless Ann died in the UK. I know Nanette was still alive in 1971 as my Grandma was writing to her. Cannot find her death but found her brothers George Wishart Melville(1951) and Ralph Leslie Melville in WW1.Cannot find George or Nannette on 1940 census. The last thing I have found of the parents George Wilson Melville and Anne McEwen Melville is the 1900 census. Thanks again Philippa

I was trying to locate Ann Melville coming over in 1907 from England and was only able to find her and her daughter Nanette listed but cancelled on a Nov 1907 ship to Philadelphia. I found Nanette listed on a Dec 1907 ship to NY. Is it possible that Ann did not return to US or did I miss finding her in ship records?

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Nanette Melville
Name:	Nanette Melville
Arrival Date:	21 Dec 1907
Birth Date:	abt 1879
Birth Location:	Scotland
Birth Location Other:	Glasgow, Scotland
Age:	28
Gender:	Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality:	Scottish (Scotish)
Port of Departure:	Liverpool, England; Queenstown, Ireland
Port of Arrival:	New York, New York
Ship Name:	Mauretania

Contact in England: Mr. Andrew Hamilton, ?124 Shiel Rd?
the 1910 census confirms the 1940 census with Rebecca (Bateson) Martin and son Andrew (Andrew James Martin's wife and son) as sister of Ella (Bateson) Gillespie and sister-in-law to the head of household (1940) - Joseph Gillespie:

1910 Census
Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Bateson, William, head, m, w, 44, m1, 24, Pennsylvania
-, Jane, wife, f, w, 40, m1, 24, 10/9, Pennsylvania
Gillespie, Ella, daughter, f, w, 23, m1, 5, 2/2, Pennsylvania
Bateson, Rebecca, daughter, f, w, 19, s, Pennsylvania
- Mamie, daughter, f, w, 16, s, Pennsylvania
- William, son, m, w, 14, s, Pennsylvania
- Joseph, son, m, w, 12, s, Pennsylvania
- Edward, son, m, w, 10, s, Pennsylvania
- Charles, son, m, w, 5, s, Pennsylvania
- Celia, daughter, f, w, 1, s, Pennsylvania
(next page)
Gillespie, Joseph, son-in-law, m, w, 25, m1, 5, Pennsylvania
- Joseph, grandson, m, w, 3, s, Pennsylvania

-----

I don't think the SS Death Index record you attached to Andrew James Martin is for the correct person. Yes, the birth date is only off by 5 days, but the World War I draft registration cars show another Andrew Martin in Philadelphia born on 12 April 1890, and I think he is the one who died in 1960 in Bucks county (birth date matches)

U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 about Andrew Martin
Name:	Andrew Martin
City:	Philadelphia
County:	Philadelphia
State:	Pennsylvania
Birthplace:	Scotland
Birth Date:	12 Apr 1890
Race:	White
Draft Board:	31

His card says he was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He was a spinner for K and G Hance, has a wife and child, and lived at 301 Fremont St.

1920 Census
Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Martin, Andrew, head, m, w, 29, m, 1890 NA, Scotland, Piecer, Spinning mill
- Blanche, wife, f, w, 24, m, Pennsylvania
- Andrew, son, m, w, 3, s, Pennsylvania
- Alexander, brother, m, w, 31, s, 1890 NA 1895 Scotland

1930 Census
Lower Southampton, Bucks, Pennsylvania
Martin, Andrew, head, m, w, 39, m, Scotland, Laborer, carpet mill
- Blanche, wife, f, w, 34, m
- Andrew W, son, m, w, 13, s

1940 Census
Lower Southampton, Bucks, Pennsylvania
Martin, Andrew, head, m, w, 50, m, Scotland, spinner, carpet mill
- Blanche, wife, f, w, 44, m
- Andrew W, son, m, w, 23, s
- John, father, m, w, 82, wd, Scotland

So I think this Andrew Martin is the one that matches this on the Social Security death index:

Social Security Death Index about Andrew Martin
Name:	Andrew Martin
SSN:	162-09-7509
Last Residence:	19047 Langhorne, Bucks, Pennsylvania, United States of America
Born:	12 Apr 1890
Died:	May 1978
State (Year) SSN issued:	Pennsylvania (Before 1951)
