That Spring Alley address is in Manayunk, and is now called Carson Street. It is bounded by Green Lane to the NW, Fleming Street to the NE, Gay Street to the SE and Silverwood Street to the SW.

In 1882, William Allen lived in Manayunk also, at Centre Street near Hancock Street in the 22nd Ward according to the Philadelphia Death Certificates Index. It's looks to be a very short distance NW from Spring Alley.

So PAICE/PEIRCE/PIERCE is PROSS....interesting.

The 1870 Census’ population estimate is controversial, as many believed [who?] it underestimated the true population numbers, especially in New York and Pennsylvania.

These recounts are known as the 1870 Second Enumeration. The first enumeration occurred in June 1870 and the second about six months later.

The [who?] has to be politicians looking for more votes!
