Hello Jeff,

All of my notebooks are packed at the moment, we will be moving in a month or so and I packed them first, so that I would not work on genealogy, instead of packing. You can see how well that worked. My husband descends from Charles Miller. Not much is known about Charles, but the Thomas family are well covered in a couple of publications. The Thomas Family, Hilltown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania by Edward Matthews, Published by Arthur K. Thomas, Lansdale, Pennsylvania, 1884. I think I found this book at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Maybe they have it on-line by now. Another book was done by Doris Osterheld, but I don't think it circulated beyond immediate family. How are you related, perhaps it would be of interest. Doris' book is about a younger Charles Miller and Catherine Jane Butts, his wife.

I could be wrong but I vaguely remember being told something like that.

Check with the Monroe County Historical Association to see if they can tell you more.

Check with Dale Berger who is quite familiar with cemeteries in Monroe County and the Serfass Family. He has done extensive research on both: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

As far as I know Pleasant Valley Cemetery is not located near Gilbert (although Gilbert was once known as Pleasant Valley). The cemetery at Gilbert is Salem Union Cemetery where quite a few Serfass's are buried, but I've never heard of Ulrich.

Hi I am also trying to find info on a Moyer family. My great great grandfather George Andre (Andrew/Andrews) married a Sarah Lucinda Moyer (est 1830-1860) and they had a daughter Emma Catherine (1857-1901). I believe Sarah's father's name was George Moyer. After Sarah died in 1860, George went off to war and I dont know what ever happened to the daughter Emma. I did find her getting married to a William Wize (Wise) from Phillipsburg, NJ. I also know that when my George Andre remarried his place of residence was listed as in Monroe County, Pennsylvania (previously he lived in Northampton County) Does any of this sound familiar to you?

I was wondering if anyone has access to the Hamilton Church records. I'd like to know the baptism dates and who the sponsors were for the children of Jesse & Susanna Bond. They would be:
(1) George, born 2 Sep 1784
(2) Peter, born 14 May 1787
(3) Adam, born 11 Jan 1790
(4) Elizabeth, born 26 Sep 1792
(5) Jacob, 28 Jan 1802

They also have 2 children who appear in the Moravian Records at Schoenock. If anyone has the baptism dates and sponsors for them, that would also be greatly appreciated. They are:
(1) Susanna, born 26 Mar 1795
(2) Catharine, 22 Feb 1797

Thanks for any help!

I suggest getting his death certificate and obituary. I don't know if it is better to get the death certificate through the Oregon Health Dept or the Oregon State Archives. Check with a local historical or genealogical organization or library for the obit although it looks like the University of Oregon has a number of newspapers: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ormultno/News/holdings.htm

I couldn't find Edwin or any Hufsmith born in around 1877 in Monroe County in the census that would fit. For research in Monroe County try the Monroe County Historical Association. They have a fine collection of records. Most likely he would appear in the baptismal records of Zion Lutheran Church of Brodheadsville, Salem Union Church of Gilbert, St Matthews Union Church, Kunkletown and possibly Christ Union Church of Hamilton Twp. However, it is possible he was baptized as a Methodist.

He moved to Washington State in 1903.

I have been unable to find any birth records, and have been unable to locate him in the 1880 Census.

I have a great Uncle whose photo I would like a copy of.
And any contact with a relative. I am James Elijah Hamler's Great-Niece.

His name is James Elijah Hamler, b. Nov. 1845, Sussex Co., NJ; died 05 Feb 1911 in PA.

His first wife was Sarah Elizabeth Orner/Arner, b. Abt. 1846; died 1874, PA. His only child who lived very long was Lewis N. Hamler Apr 1867NJ - 02 Dec 1959 PA. Lewis died at Barto Nursing Home, Portland, PA [Source: New Jersey Herald Obituary]. Lewis was buried at Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg, PA [Source: New Jersey Herald Obituary].

Lewis had a child named Layton M. Hamler who was born in 1896, New Jersey. Layton was married to Marion H. Hamler and their child was Meldon M. Hamler, who was born in 1920 in PA.

I was able to contact Meldon's widow who, not knowing me, was reluctant to give me any family information, which I completely understand... I believe she was living in a southern state at that time.

James Elijah Hamler, who I am hoping to receive a photo of served in the Civil War from New Jersey; he married a second time, to Mary Howard who at the time of her death was destitute and who died in 1920. He sired no children with Mary. So he only had one child who lived, who was Lewis.

Thank you for any help about this family, especially a photograph of James Elijah Hamler.

Thanks so much,
Kathleen Hamler Purchase
LPurch6636@aol.com

I already replied to the mailing list - It wasn't an "early settler" but the doctor who delivered them that is the source of the name. He delivered an awful lot of local babies of the period.

Sydenham Lee was another one named that way, but followed the railroad to Scranton and doesn't appear in the Monroe Co census.

fyi - Monroe County is bordered by Pike County to the north.

Could the spelling be Sydenham?

The given name Sydenham appears with the following Surnames in Monroe Co PA census reports: Staples, 1860; Walton 1930; Hohensheldt, 1910; Lace, 1900; Palmer,1880; Ike, 1880; Mengle 1850; Smith 1850; Dennis 1850; Walton 1850.

There must have been some early settler who carried Sydenham as a given or surname, held in great esteem, and spawned a slew of honorific bearers of the same who may or may not be related.

Found this
name : Sydenham J. Angeline was from Monroe co,Pa. there is Price Co boardering Monroe so would assume Syderham was from that area also but can't seem to find any info on him or her after 1880. It makes me wonder if the name as unquie as Syderham is could it be wrong? it could be abraham ? they had a daughter Amelia b.May 1874 she lives in Luzerne co., Pa all of her married life married to john Hillard

I have located a death listing for Demas Tucker in 1907.

Tucker, Demas; 120932; Monroe Co.; Dec. 27.

I have not used this to send for death certificates but I think you'll need that number after his name (120932) to request a death certificate from the state. Here's that link:
http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/dea...

Here's the link to view the page where I got the information:

http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt?open=514&...
Select the box for 1907
Select the entry for: D-07 T-U-V.pdf
First of 120 images displays.
Scroll down to image 65..
Demas Tucker is on the 10th line.
Pennsylvania Department of Health, Public Records, Death Indices

I willing to exchange information if you would like. I haven't been able to find much on Demus Tucker but I have an obituary for Mary Ann Tucker, she was 99 when she died. By the way my grandfather was Addison Tucker. Email me at jhowell483@aol.com so we can exchange information.

Janel

Wills in the Monroe County courthouse only go back to 1860. The county was in existence before that, but the records were kept in Easton at the Northampton County courthouse. You will need to search there in the old archives section to find any records, not Monroe.

Probate Lookup for Abraham D Van Auken

Can someone check to see if there is a will for Abraham D Van Auken, possibly dated 1854? I do not know the source of that piece of information. Abraham's wife, Jane Decker, d 1857 and is buried in Lord's Cemetery. I have a note that Abraham d 1854 and is buried there as well but I am finding him living in MI with daughter, Caroline VA Bonnell in 1870. I would greatly appreciate finding a will or other probate.

7-12-2012

Is there a way for someone to check and see if an obituary notice is available for Madeleine L. Tanner of East Stroudsburg, PA who died March 27, 1977? If an obit is available, I would like to receive a printed copy of it or if you know how to do a scanned image and send it to my e-mail at keith345@hotmail.com that would also be acceptable, whichever you prefer. Thank you for any assistance offered. KEITH (Genealogical Researcher)
