Mary Moore, nee Harvey

Looking for information on Mary MOORE, nee Mary HARVEY, born Cumberland County (later designated Franklin County) Pennsylvania, ca. 1775, died after February 1819. Her name appears on an indenture in Franklin County, PA, in which she sells her portion of land left to her by her father Thomas Harvey Sr. (died 1790), and her brother Thomas Harvey Jr. of near Fannettsburg, promising to pay her $350 for her interest. The document lists her as a resident of MIFFLIN COUNTY, Pennsylvania. However I do not know the first name of who she was married to. Any leads greatly appreciated!

HATFIELD: According to my uncle & great grandfather who was married to Peter's grandaughter: Peter HATFIELD married Anna LEIBENGUTH(b in Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery Co, PA on Aug 23, 1792). My uncle claims Pottsgrove was not erected until 1807 so she was probably born in old Douglas Township., her parents were John & Elizabeth Reiffschneider Liebenguth m aug 23, 1791 at Falkner Swamp Reformed Church. Peter & Anna HATFIELD lived in vivinity of Pottstown, one of their children baptised at Pottstown Reformed church in 1815. He was recorded as engaged in manufatures, perhaps a tailor. My uncle states the 1830 census was odd... lists 5 males in household, one over 100, 5 femaes the oldest 29. also immediately next to Peter's name is a note that David Hatfield, a cousin of Peters whose wife is a cousin of Peter's wife... Then I have Lots of hear say stories about family.. then according to a grandchild, Peter was at a barn raising and when they were putting up the last log a man let it slip and the log struck Peter Hatfield, breaking his spinal colum causing him to die very painfully. He made out his will on May 28, 1846 & died 11 days later. will.. I have lists from will but starts "Peter Hatfield of White Deer Township" etc, anyway, he mentions his youngest sons Reuben, Lewis and Henry. (My direct in this is his daughter Leah who married John Diffenderfer of East Lewisburg)After his death, Peter's wife Anna moved to Lewisburg, PA to live w her son Aaron's & his family & her daughter Leah also lived in this area. It seems that in 1851 there was some sort of scandal & it was suggested later that Anna failed in her job as guardian of her children. Anyway, the "Hatfields", at least some of them, left PA for Ohio. Mrs Anna Hatfield, according to Mrs Ida Hatfield Fitch, said that Mrs Hatfield died at the home of her son Aaron in Clyde Ohio in 1868/69. Peter and Anna HATFIELD's children were: Joshua b July2,1812 in PA -d Aug 5, 1854 in Fremont Ohio; Charlotte b May 18,1815 d Oct 5 1863 PA ; Aaron b march 6, 1819 PA d Dec 4, 1898 in Mich. Leah b in PA Feb 7, 1822, d in Buffalo, NY in 1916; Rachel b june 17, 1825, PA d ? lived in PA w husband & family; Mary Ann b Nov 12, 1828 in PA (apparently she was the CENTER of scandal..she had a son out of wedlock, causing Hatfields to leave PA .. Calvin was the boy's name and a Mrs Rena Hatfield Billion says Calvin was the finest gentleman she ever knew); Reubin Livingood Hatfield b Aug 28, 1831 PA d Nov 3 1904 after a stroke; Lewis b Feb 20, 1834 PA d Cleveland Dec 9 1879; Henry b Jan 23, 1837 PA moved to ohio then Osborne Kansas where he d Dec 1912... plus other gossipy notes which I am not including unless you would like or need them...
My great grandmother was a Spigelmyer. I looked in our family history and I did not see Curt Spigelmyre. Can you give me a little more info about where he was living and approximate year. The Spigelmyers have many spellings. They first came over here on the Ship called Hope. Landed in Philadelphia on 28 Aug 1733. They were Palatines. Hans Marti (Martin) Spitelmayer and his son Hans Adam Spitlemire. took the oath to the government as soon as they landed here. You notice the different spellings. They had someone else write their names so it was spelled by the way they thought it sounded. The ship lists are in the German Pioneers book by Rupp and the Pennsylvania Archives. They were mostly from Snyder County, PA but some did move to Mifflin and Juniata County.

John Allen:

Assessed in Wayne twp on 50 acres in 1783 and again in 1790 on 200 acres, 1 horse and 1 cow. Assessed on 90 acres in Oliver twp in 1836.

From page 595, Oliver twp - "John Allen located at first 50 acres, which he owned in 1782. On September 4, 1792, he warranted 200 acres and in 1793 he owned 300 acres. A part of this was in Long Hollow, Wayne township, which, in 1799, he sold to James Stackpole. The farm on which he resided is now (1886) owned by >>>>>Musser. John Allen had 5 sons: William, James, Robert, George and Christian. Willam and Robert emigrated to the West; James moved to Lancaster; George settled on the homestead, where he remained until 1851, when he sold the farm and moved to Indiana, where he died. Christina settled in Cetre county, where he still(1886) resides. He also had several daughters, who married and moved to other places."

The only mention of Margaret Hannawalt is the daughter of George Hannawalt of Wayne twp who married Hugh McKee in 1826. There is no mention of John Allen's wife's name.

I think he and John Allen were close friends. Any info there? Was he from Scotland?

I also have REEDs who left PA for OH, probably from the Mifflin or Centre Co areas. My ROBERT REED was born about 1798-99 and married in 1820 Janet Sankey in Jefferson Co, OH. The SANKEY family is also from the same part of PA. I have many William REEDs but no wife names for any of them. William born about 1748 is the son of John and Mary Brotherton Reed. I am looking for more information on these REED families, William may be father for my Robert REED or possibly another son of John and Mary Brotherton REED.

Not much, but a little. In 1793, William Adams owned lots 2,3 & 4 in Lewistown and in that same year opened a tanyard on lots 1 & 2. Also in 1793, Jesse Adams owned a lot in Lewistown (lot 28).

The only thing on a McConell is that in the first assessment after the erection of Mifflin county (1789?), a George MeConnell was assessed on 150 acres, 1 horse and 1 cow. At the time, the assessment covered what was at the book's writing in 1886 Derry, Decatur and Granville townships.

That's it.

I found one of my more interesting ancestors in prison in the 1870 census. Apparently, he was a fabulous counterfeiter and one of the most wanted for his passing of the counterfeit money. These 'black sheep' are usually so much more interesting and fun than those of us who always are so drearily 'good'. Lol.

Unfortunately, Eugene Lammay from Latrobe in Allegheny county had a wee bit of a run-in with the law in 1888. He tried to sell Harry Hersh a horse and buggy he had hired from H.H. Shellenberger in Middleton on Monday, May 21, 1888. In default of bail, he was sent to jail for court. (Harrisburg newspaper "The Patriot" of Wednesday, May 23, 1888). His sentence for larceny was deferred in June of 1888 (The Patriot of June 16, 1888)

Hi Margie, Thanks for explaining that. What good detective work you did. I became very curious because I saw all the entries with the two different families. It didn't occur to me that both Ann and Myers had remarried. He was quite an interesting guy. I saw on 1910 census for son Lewis, it says his father was born in France. All prior censuses said PA. Anyway, my suggestion is - if you haven't already done it - look for newspaper articles about Lewis, Clara, and Ida like marriage announcements or obituaries and perhaps you will discover their maternal grandparents names.
That was very nice of you! I do believe however they are all the same Myers S Chalfant. His name was butchered in almost every census (Miers Calfen 1850, Morris chalfant 1860 Chalfart Myers in 1870 and finally got it right in 1880 Myers Chalfant).

You say 1860 for Myers & Elizabeth Chalfant with children Sarah, Frank and Mary Ann--but I believe that is the 1880 census. By 1870 Myers and Anna were married to new people. Myers to Elizabeth Brown and Anna to Joseph Lammay. I do appreciate your help. It took me a very long time to sort this all out.
I have no connection to these families but I took a look at Ancestry to see what evidence is there. Based on the documents available on Ancestry.com, it appears there may be a mix-up on names:

According to the 1860 census, Annie Chalfant is married to MORRIS CHALFANT, and their children are identical to the ones you listed for Ann and Myers Chalfant. It is not a transcription error. The name Morris is written very clearly on the census record. It could have been enumerator error, of course. Here's what it says -

1860 US Census - West Coln(?) Township (Coatsville), Chester Co., PA., residence 540/family 540: CHALFANT, MORRIS, 26, laborer, property value $50; ANNIE 25, housewife, cannot read or write; LEWIS A. 7; CLARA E. 4; IDA F. 2. All born in PA.

There is also a Myers S. Chalfant on the 1860 census, married to Elizabeth G. Chalfant, with children Sarah, Frank and Mary Ann. There is extensive information about that Myers S. Chalfant. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, PA Infantry Reserves, and Ancestry has a lot of documentation on him and his war service. His death date was 22 June 1896; interred Media Cemetery, Upper Providence Township, Delaware Co., PA., Section A, Lot 118, Grave #2.

Maybe that will give you a couple new leads to explore. Good luck.

Tink

Nothing about Jane in the Mifflin chapters, although there was a James Magee living in Derry twp (the part that later became Decatur twp) in the very early part of the 1800s. I see that her husband was always in the Venango censuses from 1820 - 1840 (Beaver twp) which became Beaver twp in Clarion county by 1850. As they were married there, it would seem likely that she was living there too as they usually married wherever the bride lived. No Magees in the 1820 Venango census, but there are 4 McGees in the 1830 Venango census. I wonder if Jane moved there after 1820 but before Jane met and married Benjamin?

I believe William and Jane McKim were her parents--trying to confirm that. As I work on the McKim family Mifflin County keeps appearing.
I did find an Ann McKinn, age 18, working for the Andrew and Isabella McCreery family in the 1850 Honeycreek, Chester county, Pa. census. Also in Honeycreek was the William and Jane McKinn family, so perhaps this is her family. As she and husband were in Chester county in the 1860 census, perhaps they met and married in that county.

I noticed your reference to Thomas C. Thompson b. 1833. Do you need information about him? He was my wife's great-grandfather.

Jake

Thank you so much Tink! I'm kind of new to this, and not getting a lot of help from my mom.

I'll have to check out the information on the SSDI database, I know she passed when before I moved to TX in '94, but I thought it was when I was in undergrad, not grad school, but Bullhead City makes sense if she was living with my Aunt.

Hi, I am looking for any one that can help me find my father's family. According to the 1940 census they lived in Burnham Township, Mifflin, PA. My grandfather's name is Ira, and my grandmother's name is (as far as I know) Cinderella. What I really need to find out is how to find her maiden name. They have both passed on, and I do not have any contact with my father at this point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
