Victor & Irene are my husband's grandparents. They lived in Allentown. My husband said that he didn't know much about either Frank or Rosie. Since Victor & Irene were married in early 1919 and their son Victor was born in April 1920, only Frank and Rosie show up on the January 1920 census. I sort of assume that Frank and Rosie were perhaps children of Irene. For a couple to adopt two children so soon after marriage...

According to the 1930 Census, Frank and Rosie were the sdopted children of Victor & Irene Grzenczyk.

Victor & Irene had a son, Victor R. - born about 1920 in PA, and a daughter (record says son), Irene M. - born about 1923 in PA.

There was also a Susanna Zurich, listed as Mother-in-law, born about 1873 in Czechoslovakia. This would be Victor's wife Irene's mother.

Richard

I am attempting to trace a possible lead on my 2g grandfather, and that has led me to Allentown, a city I have not researched before. The family was there from 1860 to sometime after 1880. The head of the family was a Peter Gallagher, and I am trying to determine if their adopted son, Thomas Dolan, is "my" Thomas Dolan.

Were there any predominantly Irish Catholic churches (and/or cemeteries) there during that time frame? Those would be my next resources to check out.

Thank you!

I believe that the PAYONK family connection is correct. Michael A Payonk, 1911-1988 was married to Anna Zayatz Payonk 1915-2003. Anna was the daughter of Frank Zayatz and Anna Hudacek. Frank was the son of Eva Zayatz ... Eva was the sister of my husband's great-grandmother Anna Zajacs Kish.

Michael Payonk (above) was the son of Martin Payonk and Anna Payonk. In 1920, they have children John, Marie, Mike, Anthony, Martin, and Andrew.

I have this documented in my tree. If you would like more info, contact me.

Allentown's German-language papers from the period (Unabhaengiger Republikaner, Der Friedens Bote, Lecha Bote) are also on microfilm at the Lehigh County Historical Society, although in my experience they tend to include "Death Notices" rather that we would consider an obit. (ie, JOHH SMITH, AGE XX, died XX/XX/XXXX in XXXXX). Given where the individual lived, you probably want to be focused on Bethlehem-area publications.

She would have been baptised in a Slovak/Hungarian speaking Catholic Church.
Hello!
It is so wonderful to meet a long lost cousin!

First, thank you so much for telling me about George's middle name. I didn't realize it was spelled with 2 Ps instead.

It seems like you have searched for some time for the missing link - what other avenues have you tried? I actually came across a reference via the LDS family search site however it was for a John Coffeen who immigrated from Ireland, founding the town of Cavendish, VT. It looked promising but the dates didn't seem to jive. I am tempted to get the microfilm on loan at my nearest Family Center to see if there is more info. I wanted to see if you had already checked it out and ruled it out.

I have thought about doing the DNA test but wasn't sure just how much information it provides. Did you get a lot of information about the Coffin lineage?

My line is Ira / George / Mabel A. Coffin Fitzpatrick / Mabel Anna Fitzpatrick Needer / Constance Needer / and me Shirley Aubrey Ryan!

Looking forward to our continued discussions!

Shirley Ryan
Ellisville, MO
Sjryan877@msn.com

Well Hello my dear cousin Shirley!!

I was part way through a response to your note earlier today and I'm not sure if it went through. I'll assume not. Otherwise, I'll be repetitive but that's OK when it comes to cousins.

We have the same g-g-grandfather which makes us 3rd cousins, right? How exciting! Those Coffins of prior generations had lots of babies and they made us which was pretty great of them don't you think? Ira and Magdalena had 19 children of which I think 11 or 12 made it to adulthood. She must have been one amazing woman.

I believe George's middle name is Streppe rather than Streepe. I used to think the later also but was corrected by another cousin and I've seen the corrected spelling in several records.

Back to Ira A Coffin, Sr. It appears that Ira and his older siblings Horatio Nelson Coffin and Susan Coffin must have landed in a space ship as there are no known records of their ancestry. Yet. Until we came along and solved the big mystery. And there are many other cousins interested in the truth regarding their parents. You'll find some family trees showing their parents were John Coffin and Patience Bennett but there is no proof. There are recordings that Susan was born near Boston but again no proof.

Have you participated in the ancestry DNA test? I recently received my results and they were very interesting but even more confusing. I have found a few other cousins going back to George and Ira but only one DNA match to someone with roots back to Tristram Coffin who emigrated in 1642 from England. I'm hoping that as more people participate in the DNA test that more links will surface.

My line is Ira A/George Streppe/James Price/Theodore Gladstone/Robert Franklin and me Eric Benjamin.

Can you tell me more about your line?

Your cousin,
Eric Benjamin Coffin
Stoughton, WI
ebcoffin@gmail.com

Looking for Susanna Ellis b. 1857

I am hoping someone might be able to find a marriage record for Susanna Ellis---she may be the mother of my brick wall grandfather Edgar Carey b. 1873.

Susanna was the daughter of William and Pauline (Holback) Ellis. Wm died in the Civil War (I have his pension file) and Pauline remarried, to Daniel Drum and later to someone named Rummeler. I cannot find Susanna after the 1860 census. Her sister Sarah married Joseph Rehr of Pottsville and lived in Philadelphia till her death in 1940. Sarah was supposedly my grandfather's aunt and Susanna was her only sister. Joseph Rehr had 5 sisters:
Ellen born in 1852
Clara Elizabeth b. 1856
Emily b. 1860
Sarah/Sallie 1862-1912 died unmarried
Laura b. 1866

If I can trace Susanna, I may have a breakthrough. Any help much appreciated.
Kate

Hello, my name is Shirley Ryan and I am trying to find the parents of Ira Coffin, Sr. My great great grandfather was George Streepe Coffin and everything seems to point to Ira Sr as his father but then things become blurry regarding his parents. Have you had any luck in your search?

Hausman - Hollenbach - Gross Photos (ca. 1900)

I attended a flea market near Washington DC and purchased two old photos (ca. 1900) with the hopes of returning them to an interested family member. The first is 2"x3" in size and identified on the reverse as "Valeria Hausman Hollenbach." The photographer was Hunsicker & Warmkessel, Allentown, PA. Through research on Ancestry.com I found Valeria Hausman married Thomas B. Hollenbach and lived in Lehigh County.
The second is a 4.5"x6.5" cabinet photo from about the same time period and identified on the reverse as "Adora Gross." Research on Ancestry shows Adora to be the sister of the woman in the first photo, Valeria, and that she married Oliver J. Gross. The photographer is identified as Lenharts, Allentown, PA.
Both ladies are buried in Neffs Uniion Cemetery, Lehigh County.
Feel free to contact me if you have a true genealogical interest in these people and we can discuss a transfer in ownership of the photos. Enjoy!

Every year when I visit the graves of my grandparents in Sacred Heart Cemetery, I notice the Logue headstones, which are a row up. This year I took pictures because Lillian's is sinking into the ground and perhaps somebody in the future would be interested. I pushed away the grass and noticed her year of death was not engraved. Year of birth is 1885. I thought I would check the Ancestry boards to check for possible posts. I'm attaching the photos, if interested. They were taken 09.25.2012

There is a lookup volunteer for The Morning Call. Here is the link:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~obitl/volp...

Clara's obit (published 01.26.1921, p. 7) has been indexed but not Steven/Stephen. The dates indexed in the link below show that June 5 through June 18, 1925, have not been indexed. Since you have the DOD, the lookup volunteer should be able to find it.

http://www.allentownpl.org/obits.htm

Nellie & Percy passed away before I was born and my grandmother lived in NJ and I didn't get the chance to see her much before she passed away. My mother passed away 13 years ago as well so I have very limited information. I never heard anything about Nellie's upbringing, thank you for sharing. I appreciate you forwarding the letter once you are able to. My mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother (Nellie) & great grandfather (Percy) and Percy's parents Lewis & Bertha Will are all buried together along with some other Will family members. I only recently found some pictures of Nellie that my Mom had that we thought were lost, but a relative found them. I also found some very old pictures of either Will or Fenstermacher people, but there are no names on the pictures and no one is alive on that side of the family to help!

Your great grandmother was ny grand aunt.I have the letter from Her scanned into my other computer which just broke/\. I hope to have it fixed this week and will gladly send it to you. Are you able to see my family tree? Did your great grandmother talk about her siblings? They had a very rough upbringing. Your great great grandmother Mary Webb 1st husband (William Fenstermacher) died in 1893. She then remarried a John Swartz. He was very abusive. Mary placed my grandfather, Albert Kaercher Fenstermacher (Nellie's brother), in Girard College for orphan boys. He was there from age 7-15. Are you able to see the page I have for Nellie? All I have is public information on her.
