POW/MIA Korean War

I am searching for the families of 2 soldiers that were POW/KIA in the Korean War. When they entered service they gave Dauphin County as thier home of record

Soldier: LONNIE HOCKADAY
Born: 1929
Date of loss; Dec. 19, 1950 KIA

Soldier:DONALD NORMAN BARNETT
Born: Aug. 19, 1931
Loss: November 29, 1951 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. These are 117 families from Pennsylvania that are missing and 2 from Dauphin County.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Sorry - if you note, the book was written in 1896 about Dauphin county and only concentrates on those who had lived in Dauphin county quite a while. Unfortunately, Arthur Cooper Wright is not in the book.

I tried here in 2007, "Hello, I'm looking for any help finding eariler generations connected to Henry Frantz b. 22 Dec 1801, d. 11 Nov 1876. Or Ester Bates, his wife."

Let's add a couple of names I've now connected to - Children include:
John, Polly, Elizabeth wed John Barnhart, David wed Amanda Earley, Peter wed Elizabeth, Levina, Alexander wed Elizabeth First(my line), Caroline with Noah Roth, Henry Clay wed Katie First, & 2nd wife Lucy Lindemuth (I have the D.C. Bio.), lastly Benneville, born about 1848.
Surnames married in or next gen.: Clinton Linebauch, Jennie Cassel, Sarah Gibson, and Malinda Roth.

I live in the area and have been to state library and archives, also local historical groups. I'm just not looking in or for the right info? Some of the answers are in, Who did the girls marry? But I've had no luck.

Seems odd that Henry Clay's descendants are so hard to find. I have his children from two marriages; Sherman, Harvey, Anna, then Joseph and Sarah issued Norman a grandchild, next were Carrie May, Jessie Daisey and Cora Mabel.

Any help is greatly apprieciated. Will return the favor... I have a full boat membership at Ancestry.

Thanks

The Hummelstown Brownstone Company, was formerly the Pennsylvania Brown Free Stone Company.

Have you tried:

The Dauphin County Historical Society, records titled Hummelstown Brownstone Manuscript Group. I'm sure they will have some good information and advice.

The PA Historical and Museum Commission erected a historical marker in 2005.

Or the PA State Library for the Hummelstown Sun Newspaper or any books they may have.

Including, Ben F. Olena "Hummelstown Brownstone - Five Quarries Mined the Prized Sandstone from 1867-1929", In: Pennsylvania magazine, Vol. 19, No. 6, November/December 1996, pages 26-29 with four historical photographs.

I have located the burial locations for the Cooper Wright family at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery located at Main and Vine Streets in Middletown, PA.

Both Arthur Cooper Wright Sr. and Jr. worked at a quarry, circa 1910. I'm assuming this quarry was associated with the Hummelstown Brownstone Company.

I'm looking for photos or other information regarding former employees of the Hummelstown Brownstone Company...maybe a listing of surnames of previous workers. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks! George Sever bought 'Flickinger's Island' ~ 1831. He bought it from John Flickinger. He died in 1832 and then it was sold to Joseph Stocker ~1834. I wonder if maybe the island in question is actually Stucker's island? Also, I would think that the islands would change over time. What may have been one island may have become two or three, or vice versa. You can even see on the maps how the shapes of the islands changed from 1875 to the present.

Does anybody know which of the islands in the Susquehanna used to be known as Flickinger's Island? It was sold by John Flickinger to George Sever in 1831. The deed says that the island is within the limits of Swatara Township and opposite the mouth of the Yellow Burches (sp?) Creek.

I have a photo of a Charles E Park given to my Great Grandfather John McGrath and notes him as a cousin. In the 1910 census Charles was 17 living with his Parents John Park 61, Ellen Park 61 and 3 siblings including John Park "a druggist own store" all at 632 Race Road Harrisburg. In the 1930 census Charles is at W Chocolate Ave age 38 and a Clergyman in the Catholic Church. His elder sister Gertrude Park age 49 was with him.
Charles may have died in 1972.

I would like to find out how to contact the Catholic Church in Harrisburg to find out more about Charles Park or if anyone knows this family.
Gerry in Australia

Around 1878-1880 a child named Henry Goss(age 10-12) was sentenced by the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas to the House of Refuge in Phila for his crime of Incorrigibility by his Guardian, Daniel Blocher, of Penn Township near Penwyn. The only clues I found in the House of Refuge documents are, Henry spoke German,he stated his mother was dead,he saw his father last about 5 years ago, and he mentioned a brother.
My researcher found no info on Henry in Lancaster Co. Since the Dauphin Co. line is close to where Daniel Blocher, the guardian lived, I am looking for ties for Henry in Dauphin County. Henry was born between 1866-1872.

Stucker's and one of those two must be the island you are looking for. Sorry I could not for the life of me find a map with all those islands with names--but I know that is out there.

This is a map from the east shore, and living in the area I know the Yellow Breeches Creek would come out from the west right accross from these two islands.

Cindi,
Your information here has opened up a world of relationships I was not aware of here. When Ernest left the Lutheran Church to become Catholic I believe these families separated socially somewhat. Ernest was finally Baptised (sub-condition)in 1894, but starting in 1870 all the children start showing up as BP in St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Wilmina Miller and Peter Miller had one son that I know of Adam,(B.1846) who was 14 on the 1860 US Census. Wilminia I believe was married before to a Schindler and had at least 3 children: Earnest, Sophia, Frederick--and I suspect the Carl Charles Osgar in lykens was also a son. Earnest, Sophia (Koenig), and Fred (wife Sophia Slim)are listed in the Family Bible.

Be on the look out for a marriage that caused Earnest daughter Ellen to disappear after 1880. She either died, or ran away with a tall, dark, and handsome stranger!

Thanks again for so much great information.

Mike

SORRY, I was not clear in my post--these were William H and Margaret E Schindler, with their sons William C, and Earl living at 405 Herr in the Polk directory's from 1936-37,38, 39, & 40, recently added to Ancestry. (they have been calling this part of their alternate 1940 census) In 1930 it shows them living in house 407, but then they must have moved to 405.

///You are here: Search > U.S. City Directories > Pennsylvania > Harrisburg > 1936-1937 > Polk's Greater Harrisburg (Dauphin County, PA) City Directory////

The Snyder's were in-laws That moved to Downers Grove Ill., and really not likely related to the poster.

Cindi,
Thanks so much for this information. As is often the case more questions arise, like this section:
St Johns Lutheran Berrysburg
Johanna Sophia Ernstina Schlinder d/o Carl F From & JohannaCh M nee Schlindler b/may 3 1861 bp may 19 1861 sponsors parents & E Schlinder & L Konig

Since the babies last name is Schlinder & father is Carl F From and Mother is JohannaCh M nee (maiden name)Schlinder does that mean the parents were not yet married? E is probably Earnest Schindler & L Konig appears to be the husband of Sophia Schindler Keonig from the family Bible. His first name alludes me.

The others Wilmina & Peter Miller, and Keonig's lived mostly in Williamstown I believe.

Thanks again, and may I ask are these records in a library or historic society, or your own private colection?
If you had relatives who were involved in the Hummelstown brownstone industry in Pennsylvania in the latter half of the 19th century, you might be interested in reading the material below, which was contributed and written by Ben F. Olena. (Mr. Olena has included many photographs of buildings constructed of Hummelstown brownstone.)

You will find his account at the following web address:

“Hummelstown Brownstone: A study of the Hummelstown brownstone industry and its contribution to the American building arts,” by Ben F. Olena, on Stone Quarries and Beyond web site.
http://quarriesandbeyond.org/articles_and_books/hummelstown/...

(Note: I have included only some of the surnames from the book in the "Surnames" section of this entry. There are many more surnames that are not included in this list.)

We also have an old booklet on our web site entitled, "Hummelstown Brownstone Company," published in the early 1900s - a PDF file.
http://quarriesandbeyond.org/articles_and_books/hummelstown_...

Peggy B.

Thomas Daniel MARTIN (b. 8 Apr. 1796) m. Hannah CLARK (b. 1798) 14 Feb 1819 (MARTIN family bible did not include locations other than the known PA. These people were of Scottish/British Isles descent according to family notes.) In the 1820 Londonderry census there is a listing for Thomas MARTIN which seems plausible. (The enumeration is for one "couple" w/o children.) Children of Thomas and Hannah were William Davison b. 29 Jul 1820 and Thomas D. b. 16 Jan 1823. Thomas Daniel MARTIN d. 15 May 1823 and his mother, Fanny (unk.) MARTIN (b. 1756) died 31 Mar 1822; one hopes they were buried in the same lot. Hannah CLARK MARTIN then married John ZIMMERMAN and lived in Lebanon Co., Hanover. I'd be glad for any clues your database might hold for my research. Thanks for your generous offer of help.

Are you sure George married Ollie in 1924?
Do you know where they "met" and got married?
George's wife died in 1923.

Was Edward Howard born in 1922.

Also, I do not think that Helen Louise is a child of George W.
YES! Same person, George Washington Rehrer. He did indeed marry Ollie Jane and father children with her!
I know George's wife died in 1923 and also know when Edward Howard was born and (prior to their marriage but it happens all the time).
How do you know when Edward Howard was born? Do you already have information on this family?
Why would you doubt that Helen Louise was his child? Do you have any proven information to the contrary.
If you have any information on this family I would love it if you would share it with me and then we could figure out the discrepancies and set the record straight. I thought I had the correct facts but am always willing to check further.
Thank you for your help in getting the facts straight with any information you might share.

Exactly what information do you have that would make you question my post? If you would share that with me it would be great and then we could figure out this mystery.

I also have to wonder- is HbgPA Tom or Bill? Just curious.
