Looking for descendants of the James Long buried in Mt. Blair cemetery, near Meadeville. His stone states he was born in 1738 and died in 1830. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary war and "served under the illustrous Washington". We believe one of his sons was Cookson Long who I believe to be my gg grandfather. Anyone out there have any info on this family? I would like to hear from you.

According to a Long family history at the Crawford Co. Historical Society, James Long Sr. was born in Carlisle, PA, about 1738, settled in Woodcock Twp., Crawford Co., in 1794, and died there Aug. 6, 1820. We think he was the father of at least four sons: John, George, James Jr., and Cookson. John and George remained in Woodcock, James Jr. moved to Centre Co. in 1809, to Mercer Co. in 1832, and back to Crawford Co. in 1834. Cookson has been harder to follow, but we think that he might be the husband of the Sarah Cookson who is buried in Milledgeville Cemetery, Mercer Co. We think this couple had three children: John, Griffith C., and Sarah. If this is your family, please contact me.

Annette:
Thanks for your response to my query on James Long. I, along with other descendents have been researching that branch of the Longs for several years and so far, have reached a dead end. I have been to James' grave at Mt. Blair Cemetery, near Meadeville as well as Sara's grave at Milledgeville. Sara's headstone reads "Sarah, Wife of Cookson Long" My great grandfather is John James Long, who I believe to be the son of Cookson and Sarah. A stone next to Sarah is that of Lucinda, who I, also, believe to be the daughter of Cookson and Sarah.
A Cookson Long was named in the 1850 Schuyler County, IL. census in the home of David Long. He gave his age as 63 years. The same year, 1850, a Cookson Long was appointed as postmaster at Milledgeville, PA. The next postmaster named at that postoffice was Griffith Long appointed in 1860. At this time we are attempting to search the postal archives for those appointments. I believe the Cookson in IL. was the same Cookson who was postmaster at Milledgeville.
It is our goal to find the necessary documentation to prove that Cookson is our gg grandfather.
Another researcher of my Long family, now deceased, was Ella Mae Counihan, from Kansas City, KS. At the time of her death, she was searching for a publisher to publish her work in book form. Her records are in the hands of her daughter who refuses to share them with anyone. Do you have any letters or queries from her in your records? Her letters would have been in the 1970s and 1980s.
Annette, My wifes' gg grandfather was Cornelius Lynch, a civil war veteran. Does the name ring any bells?
Again, thank you for your response. Any further info you may have would be appreciated.

Thank you for your response. I do the info. you mentioned but am appreciative that you took the time to provide it to me.

Is the Peiffer Cemetery the same as the Mt. Blair Cemetery located in Woodcock TWP? I visited Mt Blair Cemetery in 1998 and saw James Longs' headstone which has a very interesting inscription.

I assume you have no corresponcence in your files from Mrs. Ella Mae Cunnihan.

You will probably see my queries on the net from time to time in hopes that someone else is searching for Cookson Long.

Again thank you for your assistance. you have been very helpful.

I don't know if this will help (or perhaps you already have this information). Will of David Carr, late of Woodcock Township, Crawford Co., PA, made 9 May 1844, recorded 22 March 1845 (Will Book B:197). To be buried in Peiffer Cemetery. Mentions son Griffith Carr, Molly Waggoner and her daughter Unice Wagoner (sic), John Hunter and Eliza, Catherine Hunter, Penelope McGill, and the heirs of Sally Long - John, Montgomery, Griffith, Ransom, Penelope and Sally. Witnesses were George Long and Mary M. Hunter (Mrs. Mary Davison).

There is no stone for David Carr at Peiffer Cemetery. There are stones for: James Long, 1738 - 4/6/1830 (Rev. War veteran), George Long 1765-1/2/1849, and Margaret, consort of George Long, 1777 - .

I have a few more notes on the David Long in Schuyler Co., if you are interested.

Would you please tell me if you know the connection between Mary M. Hunter Davison and David Carr and do you have any addition information on Mary? I am working on the Davison line. Thank you.

Tina:

Thanks for your request, but I have no info on Mary M. Hunter Davison. I have corresponded with Carol Carr who may be able to help you. Her address is <cardencar@cs.com> It has been a couple of years so hope her address is still good. If not, let me know. I may have another way to reach her.
