David L. was born at Cambridgeboro, (Cambridge Springs was formerly called Cambridgeboro) Crawford Co., PA on 2 April 1820. David and Elizabeth C. Stokes, daughter of John and Margaret Peters Stokes, joined hands on 18 March 1847. Elizabeth was born 25 July 1822. David and Elizabeth were married in the old brick home on the road to Venango. (Note: This house still stands and it is said that the Peters built this lovely brick home from materials on the property.) It is across the road from the Bole Farm.

David and Elizabeth raised a large family of children. They are:

Sarepta, b 1847
Oscar, b 1849
Samuel, b 1850
Harriet, b 1852
Pierce L., b 1853
Mary, b ca 1855
Wheeler, b 1856
Edith, b 1858
Loren, b 1860
Jennis, b 1863
Kerney, b 1865
Kate, b 1866

David's house was once a refuge for the slaves as they went north. Yes! It was part of the Underground Railroad. There was a special place in the attic of the old house where slaves could lie quietly hidden in the rafters. As the story is told, the slaves would come to the house and since there apparently were no stairs to the attic inside of the house they were ushered around the back and up the stairs to the side of the house where they remained hidden until they were able to continue their escape further north. Several other homes in that area were also part of the Underground Railroad.

Elizabeth died 4 May 1907 at their home in Rockdale Twp., near Miller's Station. David died 10 October 1895. They are buried just inside the gate at Miller Station Cemetery.

In regards to the Stokes family, I have been searching for information on F. P. Stokes who married Almeda Eighmy about 1870, probably in Crawford County, Pa. (where Almeda was from). They had children: Charles, Annie, Clair, and Frank. I have some Eighmy information, but nothing for F. P. Stokes. Is it possible that your Stokes and F. P. are related, since they are all from the same area? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Cliff Eighmy
