My grandfather was Joseph Harold Owens married to Eleanor Yohey, they had 3 children, Lanny (married to June) Carol(married to Ed Turner) and my father Joseph Harold Owens Jr.(married to Judy Hahn) My father had 6 children, Joseph Harold Owens III, Tanya Hockman, Melissa Sheffer, Chantal Owens-Laing, Conrad Owens, & Lynnae Owens - McLauchlin.
So trying to figure out where my grandfather's parents, Jeremiah & Jennie Owens came from. Would this be them? My grandfather had 18 brothers and sisters total not all survived after birth, I know some of my great Aunts are Nancy, Shirley, & Dorthy, & a few great uncles are Paul, Bill, and Jerry. I did not know all of them. If there is anymore info anyone could give me it would be greatly appreciated

HI colleen -

I just came across this and you may have already found your answer but I thought I would reply just incase. I am a descendant of Zillah (Packer) Richards and Jesse Richards. The Packer line is a very interesting one. But, I thought I would reply just incase you didn't find out yet that Zillah's last name was packer.

William Moffat did have a sister ANN. She was 2 years older than he was.
One reason I think Amanda and Hannah were the same person I have never been able to find a Amamda listed in census.
Perhaps I am looking at the wrong Moffit(Moffat), but William seems to fit the time frame.

Also on 1880 census for David/Sarah Cartwright and Hannah Cartwright they list Hannahs son as George M. No last name nor are there " marks beside the name of George as there are for the rest of the family.

I did find a partial city directory for Phillipsburg for 1890, in the PA Room at Bellefonte PA. I have lost what I had written down, but I am sure it listed George Moffit as 17/18 and his mother as Hannah Cartwright. I sent an note to the library to see if I could get a copy of that list, but have not heard from them.

I have not totally accepted William Moffat as my great grandFather, but looking at the ones living in that area he sure come close!!!!!

The Kohlbeckers lived at Milesburg and ran a hotel. They were of the Roman Catholic faith. Before 1885 there are no government marriage records in PA. Your best bet is to contact the Roman Catholic Church where they were likely to have been married - either in Bellefonte or in Pittsburgh.

Hello!! I can't believe I found this board! It appears to be old but hopefully you still have this photo. I believe the names are Ray and Nelma Clevenstine (born 1902 and 1905) respectively. They are my great grandmother's niece and nephew! Could I get a copy or scan of the photo? Hopefully their birth dates will help you to determine a time frame for the photographer. If I can provide any additional information that would be helpful, please let me know!

On a side note, I also have a photo from the Mallory Taylor Studio in Bellefonte and from the names on the back it would have been taken somewhere around 1900. Hopefully that helps!

I just noticed your email post while browsing. I am a Rowles descendant of John and Lydia, but have also been looking for any details of Mary thinking that it may lead to learning who John's mother and father were. It is my current premise that John was born in America rather than in England as I had previously supposed. My grandfather is Alvin Fagan Rowles son of Miles Reed Rowles, son of Price Alexander Rowles, son of Harman Fagan Rowles, son of John (and Lydia Whippo) Rowles. It is my current presumption that Lydia went to live with John and Mary to help Mary with the household management during her last pregnancy (with twins?) which appears to be in 1792 and which may have caused or resulted in her death.

As near as I can tell, the Whippos may have originally come from Maryland, but I have scant details to corroborate that thinking. Anything you could share on Mary, Lydia, George Jr. and/or his father George Sr. (and their wives) would be most gratefully and sincerely appreciated.

Regards,

David Rowles
Henderson, NV
email: daverowles@aol.com

Cathy,

I would be interested in seeing what you have found that links George Whippo to the Mayflower. I have been researching my lines for the past 20 years and just recently decided to focus on the Whippo line. I am interested in collecting as much info as I can about he and his descendants.

I recently obtained George Whippo's will and have scanned it to pdf. If you are interested you can see the will at my website:
http://bushfamilygenealogy.com/tng/getperson.php?personID=I1...

I have also posted my best attempt at transcribing the will, it is available at the same address as a text file.

Please contact me directly through my website, this is my wife's ancestry account and I don't check the mail here very often.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Chuck Bush

Hello,
I am working on a DAR application as John Rowles patriot who first was married to Mary Whippo and secondly married to Lydia Whippo her sister. Do you have any burial records or photos of the actual headstones of either or both of the women? There are discrepancies in the DAR with the dates and deaths of both women and I am trying to clarify.

Any of your help is appreciated.
Thank you,

Cathy Kulkin
PS - I believe George Whippo hailed from Barnstable MA and he is a Mayflower descendent. This is not my line, I am a genealogist for the DAR but I have come across this information in my search. I am sure you already know this though.

I realize there is a discrepancy in location, but I am at such a point where I don't know where they came from.

My husband's great grandfather is John Charles Onders (1896-1968). He married a Margaret Havrilla (Havrille, Havrella). Supposedly he is from a family by the last name of "Onder" and added the s at some point. Which of Floyd's siblings does your wife descend from? You can contact me at asmith@columbus.rr.com.

My wife descends from Leah A. (Sweetwood) Smith. Her father was either George or Levi (the two husbands of Susan Cramer), but owing to the timing, I cannot tell which. I'd like to determine which one for sure, and have information on the prior generations

I am just beginning to study this couple. I find several public trees that name the parents of James Lawrence as William Huston Thompson and Elizabeth Turner. These people lived in Pennsylvania.

However, in " J.H. Beers Commemorative biographical record of central Pennsylvania : including the counties of Centre, Clearfield, Jefferson and Clarion Record for Commemorative biographical record of central Pennsylvania : including the counties of Centre, Clearfield, Jefferson and Clarion Biographical Sketches.." dated 1898, pg. 1130 in the Ancestry.com database there is a biography of the son (Davis K. Thompson) of James Lawrence Thompson-Catherine Gearhart. This sketch names D.K. Thompson as the grandfather of Davis K., thus the father of James Lawrence Thompson.

Can anyone help clear up this difference? I assume the sketch to be a summary of a first person interview and reasonably accurate.
Thank you,
J

Kelly, I somehow lost my first reply to you. Thank you so much for the info regarding John and Mary Kennedy. They are my great ,great grandparents. I had found their info on the 1880 census, when they were living with my great grandparents, John and Hattie Kennedy. What I didn't know was Mary's maiden name nor her parents names. I am so pleased that you took the time to forward this to me. If I can send any information that I have regarding the Kennedy family, I will be happy to do so.
Shirley Brown Neely Minier sminier@stny.rr.com

Hi Shirley,

I found Mary’s maiden name on the Ancestry message board when I searched for Kennedy – it had the obituary for Miles Bonner. When I got Nancy Kennedy McCoy’s death certificate, it confirmed Mary’s maiden name as Bonner. I had their 1860 and 1870 census from Blair County but didn’t know they had moved to Centre County till I saw Miles’ obituary with her living in Sandy Ridge.

I am just now starting to look deeper in the Kennedy line so I don’t have too much on them yet. I have been getting a bunch of death certificates every month and have a bunch of Kennedy’s for my next batch. I will shoot you an email – I have a lot of stuff on Nancy’s family because that is the branch I was working on.

Here is the link for Miles Bonner’s transcribed obituary that mentions Mary as Mrs. Alex Kennedy:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.bonner/1283/mb.ashx

I found a piece of paper with a reference to Cherry Tree Baptist Church - don't remember where I got it and want to know what county this church is/was located in. My research is all Pennsylvania, usually Centre, Huntingdon and Venango county. Anyone familiar with this church? Here's what the paper reads:
Cherry Tree Baptist Church - This church was constituted on July 8, 1835. A confession of faith was adopted to which the following persons affixed their names: Amos B. Hancox, Nathan Breed, James Fleming, John Fleming, Amos S. Hancox, Mrs. Mary Green, Mrs. Ruth Breed, Mrs. Sarah Fleming, Mrs. Mary Fleming, Mrs. Abigail Gleason, Mrs. Jane Jones and Mrs. Blanch Prichard. Only July 25, 1835, Benjamin Fleming was elected deacon and Amos B. Hancox, clerk. Amos S. Hancox, George Strawbridge and George Kees were appointed a building committee for the erection of a church November 16, 1859.
I don't know if this information will help you or just cause more confusion but Centre County, PA marriage records show a marriage for William Moffatt of Clearfield County and Amanda Cartwright of Centre County on October 28, 1871. It shows that the marriage was performed by John Hurd, Esq at Philipburg. It also shows that the information was in the Philipsburg Journal newspaper on November 4, 1871. (I found this in the book "Marriages 1851-1873 Centre County Pennsylvania" obtained from the Centre County Genealogical Society. These are not official county government records, they are records collected from a variety of sources). Could this Amanda Cartwright be your Hannah Cartwright? They may have just gotten her name wrong at the newspaper at the time.
On the same day (October 28, 1871), Anna Moffatt and Robert R. Jones of Philipsburg were also married by John Hurd, Esq. Anna and William Moffatt might have been brother and sister. Maybe they had a double wedding.

Nine years later, Centre County and Clearfield County Marriage records show a marriage for William W. S. Moffat and Margaret "Maggie" J. McCollough both of Philipsburg on December 23, 1880. I believe you'll find this William and Maggie Moffat on Find-A-Grave in Clearfield County. William was born in 1850 so he's about the right age to be your William Moffat/Moffitt.

I'm not sure if you are familiar with that part of Centre County and Clearfield County but Philipsburg, Pa is in Centre County but right on the Clearfield County line. So a person could be listed as being from Philipsburg or Clearfield County and they'd be living right in the same area.

I am looking for information on the marriage of Hannah Cartwright, daughter of David Cartwright. She was(may have had an affair) married to a William Moffat (Moffit) around 1870. I have not been able to find the two of them on any census. According to census for 1860 (Centre Co Patton Twp) with her father David and family. Census for 1870 (Center Co Rush Twp) Hannah is not listed with family. Census for 1880 (Centre Co Phillipsburg) Hannah is listed at home with DAvid and family. Hannah is listed under Cartwright name. Under her name is listed George M. Listed as Gr Son. This George M. is my grandfather. A copy of a marriage certificate for George Moffit has the names of William Moffit and Hannah Moffit as parents of George.
I have found aWilliam Moffat (Born in Scotland around 1850) on 1860 census in KY.. 1870 In 1870 living in Decatur Twp Clearfield Co,, 1880 same place. His father is named George.
Im trying to see if this is the William who married Hannah.

Re: Are there records for the Madisonburg Lutheran and Reformed Church?

Yes, it is the same church. Madisonburg is a very small village. Before 1826 there was no church there at all, and the people went to Rebersburg to church. By 1826 there were enough Lutheran and Reformed faithful in Madisonburg to organize a congregation. They worshipped together until around 1880 when the Reformed congregation built their own church down the street and also started a new cemetery. That church is still active. The Lutherans kept on in the old building until the late 1950s when they closed, and the church was torn down. Their cemetery, which was the old cemetery, is now maintained by a cemetery association and is still used for burials.
