2013 Manley Munley Munnelly Family Reunion

Open to all interested parties. Please pass this on to anyone who may be interested in attending. You must register at the site below.

http://manleymunleyreunion.eventbrite.com/#

*******************************************

Manley Munley Munnelly Family Reunion

Hilton Hotel and Conference Center, Scranton, PA

Sister City of Ballina, Couty Mayo, Ireland

Manleys and Munleys whose ancestors migrated from County Mayo to Northeast Pennsylvania, and elsewhere, were originally Monnellys and Munnellys in Ireland. Last June, members of this family from around the US traveled to Mayo for a reunion with the local Munnellys, which is still the predominant spelling of our name over there. The reunion was such a success that we have decided to hold another one this year in the U. S.

We chose Scranton, PA as the location, because so many Manleys and Munleys still reside in that area and many who are now dispersed around the U. S. have ancestors who settled in Northeast PA for a generation or two. Scranton and the whole anthracite coal region surrounding it was a popular destination for many who emigrated from the northern half of County Mayo in the 19th century. So many of the Irish who settled in Scranton came from Ballina, and the area surrounding it, that they were declared sister cities.

Aside from its genealogical importance, Scranton is also a fun place to visit if you like architecture. The coal barons made lots of money and they spared no expense when it came to constructing public buildings.

The cost of the reunion is $45 for those who plan to attend the presentations and dinner. The cost is $20 for those attending the presentations only. You can pay by check or cash at the event, but you must use the Register feature above as soon as you know you will be attending. The hotel requires an accurate count in advance. No one can be admitted without having pre-registered. Registration will close at 11:59 PM on Tuesday, June 18.

Itinerary

The details and specific times are still being worked out, but we are leaning toward the following itinerary:

Friday, June 21

7:00-10:00 Meet and greet in the hotel bar.

Saturday, June 22

9:00 Check-in

9:30 Welcome

9:45 Presentation: Origins of the Manley/Munley/Munnelly Surname

10:45 Break

11:00 Presentation: 2012 County Mayo Reunion

12:00 Lunch On Your Own

1:30 Presentation: DNA Testing, The Future of Genealogy

2:30 Break

2:45-4:45 Small Group Discussions: Sharing Our Ancestries

6:00 Dinner

8:00 We plan to adjourn to Kildare's Irish Pub so the group can get together with local Manleys and Munleys, who may not have attended the reunion.

Sunday, June 23

Out-of-towners can choose your own activities for Sunday.

If you want to do research, the Scranton Library is a treasure trove of local records and is open Sundays from 1 to 4.

The Genealogical Research Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania offers a range of services that can help you in researching ancestors who lived in this area.

The Steamtown National Historic Site Railroad Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in antique trains and American railroad history. It’s great fun for kids!

Many of our Manley/Munley ancestors in Pennsylvania were coal miners, so a visit to the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour might be fun.

Hotel Reservations

If you are coming from out of town, there is a block of rooms reserved at the Hilton, which are discounted for reunion attendees. The Room Code is MMM3. They can only be held until May 24, after which rooms can be booked on an availability basis. The AAA and active military discount is better than the reunion discount. Spread the word to other Manley/Munleys you might know.

Marianne Manley Granoff
Albuquerque, NM
granoff@zianet.com
Am still looking for any information in regards to the death of Baby Boy Smith. The information we have is that he died at 14 mos of age due to being scalded to death. We believe his name was Andrew or Thomas Smith, but we're not sure. He would have died between 1911 thru 1915. He would have been the son of Joseph and Mary Smith of Ashfield, or may be listed as Lehighton. He was my grandmothers brother. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi, that would be great. I found the image also this evening at Family Search. I keep forgetting that site exists. I didn't see any other names on it, but it did lead me to their place of residence in New York 1905 state census. My grandmothers parents were Peter Sheridan and her mother Mary Ellen Walker. She went by Ellen most of the time. They lived on S. Laural st. in Hazelton. Would be great to know what church they were married in. My grandmothers brother Pete was the one who designed the statue of John Mitchell the labor union man of that era. thanks so much

I have absolutely no info on my grandfather except his date of birth and where he was from. DOB Oct. 31,1877 or 1876 . They were married April 1904 married by: Joseph V. Sweeney Carbon County Courthouse. ( D ALICE- posted this at one time and I stumbled upon this info)I would like to know who his parents were. They moved to NY and he was a fireman. My Dad never told me much about him. I have info on my grandmother but the Gallagher name is very popular in Penn.
Hi Bonnie,

I have no listings for any local Garrity as serving during the Civil War.

I searched the records for Upper Mauch Chunk, Evergreen, and Immaculate Conception Cemeteries and found neither Patrick nor Mary. I also searched a few nearby cemeteries where early Chunk settlers were buried ... nope.

I did find a Patrick Garrity, born 1875, living in the "Poor House" in Carbon County in 1930. He was a widower. If he is buried at Laurytown (aka the Poor House), his grave is probably unmarked, as are almost all of them.

I found probably your Patrick (born 1854 Ireland - emigrated in 1858) and Mary living in 1880 and 1900 on North Street, East Mauch Chunk. One son, named James, appears in both Census records and his age served as an identifying marker for both records. A Bridget McAvoy, sister-in-law, was living with the family in 1880. Patrick worked as a laborer/day laborer and fathered 12 kids, 9 living in 1900.

I did find a James GARRETY (1878 - 1924) in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery. He was a Veteran of the Spanish American War, serving as a private with the 12th US Infantry. His birth year is about right for the Patrick/Mary family found in 1880, 1900.

I also found an Elizabeth GERRITY in the Upper Mauch Chunk Cemetery. She died on September 15, 1970, and had been married to a Walter Harlan and then to an unknown Gerrity.

That's all I could find.

If you would like further information about the above regarding where I found the records, please let me know.

Best wishes,

Joe

PS: Happy St. Patrick's Day to the Garrity clan!

I am however interested in your mention of Mauch Chunk/Jim Thorpe cemeteries.
Have you by any chance any listings for GARRITYs? I am still searching for families of Patrick and Mary (McAvoy)Garrity. I would appreciate any information at all.
In hopeful gratitude,
Bonnie GARRITY Jameson
(four seasons in a week, California
I am looking for any information or leads on my g-g-grandparents, William H. Zellner and Eleanor Solt. Their son William Harrison Zellner was born 23 Jan 1881 in Franklin Township, PA. He married Mary Matilda Elizabeth Guldner in Weissport on 21 Oct 1905 (though they lived in the Nis Hollow/Ashfield area). William and Mary's fancy church issued marriage certificate lists his parents names, but I have been unable to find any other record of the two, and census searches of 1880 have been inconclusive.

Mary Elizabeth was a ward of the Moyer family. Her parents Owen and Lydia Fink Guldner disappear between 1890-1895.

Any tips or leads would be appreciated!

I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with Kidder Township and its history. I have a Reuben and Elizabeth (Prutzman) Keiper who lived in Kidder Township from approx.1850-1880.

I was visiting my family in Jim Thorpe this past summer and stayed in Lake Harmony. While traveling back and forth on Route 903, I passed a sign by a bridge that said "Keiper's Run." I am curious to find out if this might be connected to my Keiper family.

Tanya,

Since this is your line, you're a cousin to both Patsy, and myself. Your Oliver's mother was Sophia (Hittel) Strohl, and her line can be traced back to our immigrant forefather, Georg Michel Hittel.

Michael Hittel lived near Emaus, Pennsylvania in the 1700's and is buried at Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church up on the hill above what is now Lehigh Country Club.

Patsy's line is closer to you than mine is. She's also one of the most thorough researchers of the Georg Michel Hittel family there is out there. You both decend from GMH's 2nd son, John Adam Hittel, I descend from Adam's older brother, George Michael Hittle (Jr).

Oliver Charles Strohl was the son of Tilghman "Tillman" Augustus Strohl, and was the grandson of Michael and Mary Strohl. It is likely one of Tighlman's brothers/cousins who moved up to the Carbon/Schuylkill County area, and the naming patterns in the 2 families are extremely similar.

Hope this helps!

Joe Hittle
www.hittle.info

Hi, just wanted to let you know that Evan Llewellyn and Alice King were my great-uncle and great-aunt, and I remember them very well from visiting them in Chalfont, PA, while I was growing up. Evan's sister, Sarah Llewellyn, was my grandmother and her son Edward Llewellyn Bohlander is my dad.

I'm hoping to somehow tie this information to my family tree that I've been working on.

Thanks for posting this article!

Lorrie

They had 3 daughters. One of whom is still alive, and she has children by several marraiges, and they have quite a lot of children. She has a property on Nantucket and elsewhere. The marriage to Gwendolyn Wormser was not happy. She left him and re married, to a Harold Gaillard. They ran a restaurant on Nantucket for many decades. It closed in the 80s, but it was long faded from it's glory days by then. Best in 50s and 60s.
Following the divorce Gwen lost custody of the girls. Rumour has it that it was their Bloomingdale grandfather who left them money, that their father didn't. But that could be wrong.

Hi. It has been a while since your posting. My grandfather James Melley lived in Audenried for a short time. He was married in the Beaver Brook Chapel in DEc. 1898 because the St. Pat's Church in Audenried was condemed shortly before. Maps etc are no longer available on Payers web site and I would be DELIGHTED to see maps of Audenried and Beaver Brook showing the location of St. Patricks in Audenried and the chapel in Beaver Brook. If you can help I would be VERY GRATEFUL. Thanks. Ed O'Malley
