Does anyone know what the common practice for providing for orphans was in Butler County? I know there were two orphans homes. But I just ran across a Census for one of my ancestors in which an 11 year-old was designated as "Orphan Boy." (unfamiliar surname) Earlier, another of my ancestors had 5 or 6 "Boarders" under the age of 12 in her home. Again, surnames not related. Did the county by chance place orphans? Was it an act of random kindness? Was there a foster care system? Any insight appreciated! Elaine
