I don't have the book but the list of photos (www.bradfordhistory.com/index.asp?pageId=205) shows Maj. Culp as the first entry. It's only $25 plus shipping from the historical society. I found it on ebay for $48 so $25 is a deal. (Disclaimer: I am a sometime member only. I do not work for or volunteer time at BCHS.)

James D Hill

I am a descendant of James D. Hill and his wife, Lucy. They were residents of Jackson, Susquehanna, PA and moved to Canton, Bradford, PA. I am trying to find 4 things about them:
1. Lucy’s maiden name (I believe it is Hollis)
2. James’ date of death and where – Death certificates were not kept at that time. Is there an obituary? Where is he buried?
3. Lucy’s date of death and where – Death certificates were not kept at that time. Is there an obituary? Where is he buried?
4. Their burial site

James D. Hill was a deacon at the Canton Baptist church in 1879 at went to help start a church in Ward Township, Tioga, PA. I am assuming that he died in Ward Township after that date. In my aunt’s notes she gave the date as 26 Mar 1887. Lucy d. 09 Mar 1872 in Ward Township, Tioga, PA. The Baptist Association of Canton printed a notice in their publication that she passed.

I have found James’ parents and other siblings, but cannot seem to locate him or Lucy’s last name. I know there is a connection to the Hollis family (Abram Hollis and Laura Rouse) which is why I believe that Lucy’s last name was Hollis.

I have found references to James in several books regarding the area. I have also been in contact with the Baptist Church in Canton, but there doesn’t seem to be any other records than what I have. Would there possibly be an obituary or a cemetery listing that might have a record of him?

Thank you,
Susan Barrow Spaulding

Isaac & Adah (Mead) Wall

Hello,

I am seeking information about Isaac Wall b. abt 1821 in New York d. abt Oct 1869 in Eaton County, MI.

His wife was Adah (Mead) b. 01 Apr 1820 in Delaware County, NY to Caleb & Mary (Moss) Mead and died 03 Mar 1902 in Mecosta County, MI.

They probably married abt 1841 in Bradford County, PA. In 1850 they were living in Lucas County, OH.

Isaac & Adah had the following children together:

Israel - b. abt Dec 1841 in PA d. 03 Apr 1907 in VA - Spouse: Indiana Crump.

Erastus J. - b. 03 Jun 1843 in PA d. 06 Oct 1918 in MI - Spouse: Ruama Mead.

John S. - b. abt 1849 in OH d. aft 1910 in MI - Spouse: Maria Moody.

Clarissa - b. 08 May 1851 in OH d. 12 May 1909 in Montcalm County, MI - Spouse: Thomas Brett.

Charles H. - b. abt 1854 in OH d. abt 1930 in MI - Spouse: Kate Perkins Chambers & Ann Kelley Joroln.

Mary - b. abt 1857 in MI d. aft 1930 in MI - Spouse: Eber Blair.

Caleb - b. abt 1859 in MI d. aft 1920 in MI.

Douglas - b. abt 1863 in MI d. aft 1940 in MI.

On the 1870 federal census mortality schedule it states that Isaac's father was foreign born and that his mother was American. On Isaac's death record with the state it says that his parents reside in Pennsylvania.

I would like to know if Isaac Wall has a familial connection to the other Wall family in Eaton County. Naturally, I'd love to know who Isaac's parents were. I am hoping that there may be other descendants out there who will have information that can break down this "Wall".

Hi, Does anyone have a copy of the book, "Our Boys In Blue" which is available at the Bradford Co., PA. Historical Society?
Reading about in online, there is supposed to be a picture of my ancester, Major Jeremiah Culp who died at Fair Oaks, Virginia two days after the battle began. I would love to have a copy of his picture. He was in the 57th Volunteer Regiment of PA. The book has been reprinted as one publication with an index. Previously, there were two books.
Thank you.
Elsie

However, one of the Wanzo family members went to Ind. and the spelling of the name was changed to Wanzer. There was a Wanzo family in the 1820 census in Long Isand, N. Y.
Good Morning,
Would you by chance have the names of Gideon's berothers and sisters? I'm searching for the names of Gideon's siblings? We are searching for a John M. Wanzo - Wanzor - Wanser botn in 1820 in New York. Probably but not for sure in Huntingtgon, Suffolks Co., N. Y. This has been a brick wall for us for over 30 years. Therefore, any information, Ideas, etc. would be very welcome. Beth abcfhist@hotmail.com

I finally got to the Historical Society. Unfortunately I didn't find a lot. I didn't find her obituary. Do you know if maybe she remarried & had a different last name? Do you have James obituary? I did find mention of that, but did not get a copy of it. But I plan to go back tomorrow. I looked in the walkthrough listing for the Riverside Cemetery & I did not see either of them listed. If James had a headstone it looks like it is no longer readable.

I did find something rather interesting in the Peterson folder at the Historical Society. Someone sent in an inquiry about the same family. He was inquiring about a John (Johnson) Peterson who was adopted by James & Amanda Peterson. And as you know, John married Anna McCloe in 1902. His inquiry was kind of old (1998), but I have his name- Jeff Carpenter & I have his address at that time if you want to try & get hold of him. He may know more. You can email me at cooklogic@comcast.net, I feel funny about posting the address here without permission.

Thank you so much Virginia, will wait patiently :-) It's took quite some searching to find the connection over the years with the time frames being earlier then County and State records being kept, but it's been done YEAH !

Wish you the best, Doris

PS if you are east of WI, be prepared the cold is on the way, just 5 degrees and windchills are now way below zero, more and colder still coming.

Hello Luc,

Jerome Stapleton Miller (1921-2007), to my knowledge, died childless. His father, Henry Willard Miller, was an educator and engineer and wrote a number of books. I do not recall where he taught.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. It has been five years since I made that posting and the Millers are not my family.

Best Regards to you for the coming New Year,

Mike Cronk
Cascade, MI

P.S.

Hi Kay,

I found an old email (2008) from you about Samuel & Elizabeth Brannon McClintic (I apologize if I never responded). I am descended from their daughter Jane M. Jewett (husband Amos Jewett). You mentioned having info on Samuel--I'd love to see it, as I have almost nothing. As for Samuel's property: if it did go to Jane and Amos, it may have been sold (and if sold, it may have gone to a McClintic or Jewett sibling). Amos died young and his parents, Samuel & Ruth Jewett deeded land to Jane & Amos's three boys: Samuel, Henry, John. So I doubt they had need of more land. Jane was living in Marion County, OH near the end of her life. I don't know what became of her sons (Samuel Jewett died in 1904 Madison County?).

Karl Beckstrand karlbx@gmail.com 801-953-3793

I'm looking for information on a John Benjamin Stacy. Who lived around Bradford County during the time of the Civil War.

The story I've always been told is: my great-great-great grandmother, Sarah Ann Quick, fell in love with John Benjamin Stacy. When the war broke out, they married quickly and then he joined the army, leaving a pregnant Sarah behind. She gave birth to a son, Franklin Benjamin Stacy, but John Benjamin died at war and never saw his son.

As we've researched this story, we've run into the problem of not being able to confirm John Benjamin Stacy's existence. We cannot find him on any census, nor does he appear on Civil War rolls. Also, Sarah Ann, although she changed her name to Stacy, never collected a pension so far as we can tell.

My uncle has a theory that John Benjamin Stacy never existed, and Sarah Ann Quick had a child out of wedlock. As of yet, I haven't been able to travel to the Bradford Co. Historical Society to take a look at Franklin's birth certificate. I would appreciate any help people could offer in tracking down this mysterious ancestor.

Of note, Sarah Ann Quick's father was Furman Quick, and they lived in Asylum township. Although Sarah lived briefly in Potter Co. PA, and the entire family moved to Iowa in the 1880's.

Although our family has always spelled Stacy the way it is here, I've seen various spellings of Stacey and Staysa while doing my research.

Thanks so much!

Hello, thank you for your reply and recommendations. I searched both databases every way I could think of but the marriage I am looking for (1917) is not listed. I will keep looking. I may have to make a trip to Towanda, Pa. to the courthouse. Thank you again.

I do. However, (pardon me if you know this already). Marriage license information for 1885 to 1911 is available at Joyce Tice's site- http://www.joycetice.com/marriage/1885bradmarr01.htm#toc

The translations found there do not include the prior spouse information.

You can download pictures of actual marriage licenses at the LDS website, although their holdings are not complete, and because of occasional transcription issues you have to get creative in your searches sometimes. I have found it best to search for the man & the first name only of the woman, in case it is a second marriage for her.

Their holdings for Pennsylvania, 1885 - 1950 can be found at-
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http...

and also- PA marriages 1709-1940-

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http...
