According to his Rev. War pension application, Lawrence BISHOP was born on 12 May 1763 in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co. He served three tours, all two months long, from Bethel Twp. Each time he served in the militia, as a substitute.
The first time he served for his father, George BISHOP, who had been drafted. He served in the militia company commanded by Capt. Henry RUSH. In May 1780, he was marched to Bedford, where he and three others stayed to guard the town, on the orders of Col. WOODS, while the rest of the company were stationed 9 miles away.
Lawrence served his second tour in May 1781 as a substitute for Adam SMITH in the company commanded by Capt. Thomas DAVY. He again marched to Bedford, and from there marched 25 more miles to Col. Thomas PIPER's where he was stationed as a guard. He was then marched across the Allegany Mountains, serving as guard and scout.
His third tour was served in Aug. 1781 in the company under Capt. George INLOW as a substitute for John MILBURN. They marched to Bedford, then to Vice CARBER's fort. They soon marched to Col. James MARTIN's about 15 miles away at the "Crossing of Juanita River" because Indians had broken in and killed a family nearby. From there he was marched further down the river to Abraham COWALT's.
Henry SOUSLY/SOUSBY? who served with Lawrence BISHOP on his third tour, made an affadavit confirming Lawrence's service.
Lawrence BISHOP, a George Bishop (whether brother or father, I have yet to determine), and Henry SOUSLY/SOUSBY? settled in Bullitt Co., KY.
I would like to learn more about the people and places named in his application. Besides his father, what relation, if any, were the men for whom he served as substitute? Was Henry SOUSLY/SOUSBY any relation? Where can I learn more about the stations and forts mentioned and the men under which he served? Any information will be appreciated.
